Upon entering a rather plain tent, you’re immediately greeted by sharp green eyes and a devious smile. “So, you’ve found the poker tent,” the greenrider says, brushing some deep red hair away from his face as he waits for your answer. “We’re just waiting for enough people to sign up and we’ll have ourselves a little tournie? Interested? Excellent.” He makes a note and gives you an expectant look. “So, what will you be betting? Don’t think this is for free, I reckon I have a bronze lizard in this pile.”

Once you offer a mark or two, he nods for you to take a seat at an empty table. Feel free to make small talk while you wait for the game to begin!

[OOC: How does this work? It will be a dice roll contest. The rules will be posted once there are enough people to play. You MAY enter more than one character, but you may only win one flit. Anyone may win a flit.]

While F’sey was busy trying to attract someone to cheat players, C’ren was busy trying to catch up on his sleep. Clearly, he must’ve been half-asleep when he had agreed to this… idea of F’sey’s. Either that or drunk. Either one seemed likely since he was still on Nightwatch. And the firelizards weren’t helping much. Naturally, he couldn’t leave Pyrite and Vox alone in his weyr. Besides, the little golden firelizard was drumming up a fair amount of business for F’sey.

Apparently, people thought her presence might mean there could be a gold egg in there too. C’ren snorted at the very idea. Although he wouldn’t say anything to dissuade people of the idea, the eggs were not actually hers. Actually, he had no idea where F’sey had gotten them, but he had a shrewd idea of it. He had spent enough time losing poker to F’sey to figure it out.

“Right. Well, wake me when something interesting happens, will you?” he said with another yawn. The younger Greenrider was lounging on two chairs, propping his legs and feet up on one. It wasn’t very comfortable, but, compared to the night, it was good enough. Vox, the blue firelizard, yammered happily and curled up on his owner’s chest like an extremely fat kitten. Pyrite was busy trying to look pretty, in hopes of getting something out of others. After all, she was wonderful. Why shouldn’t she get treats?

Kytara peeked into the tent. She had heard gossip that there was a poker tournament being held. Normally the quiet girl wouldn't have given it a second thought -much more preferring to stick to less social things- but the rumored prizes had caught her attention. Flit eggs. Real life honest flit eggs. Sure she wouldn't stand a chance against all of these men, but maybe she could just watch.

She was caught off guard a little as the rider addressed her. Bet? She had a few marks left from the last time she had run some errands for her Uncle. It couldn't hurt to try could it? She slipped into a seat as far from everyone as she could and kept her eyes lowered to the table.

She noticed the two firelizards present and looked up to watch them with growing interest. She dug around in a small pouch at her side, deperatly looking for something to give to them as a sort of treat. A small smile made its way to her face, quickly morphing into a scowl as she pulled out a piece of jerky. Shards what luck she had.

Pyrite immediately crooned at the girl who had entered, just in case Kytara hadn’t noticed her. And then trilled again, just to make extra sure. Because, you know, lots of people would totally miss a Gold firelizard. Preening herself carefully, she gracefully fluttered over to the girl and, more importantly, the offered treat. She gave it a few delicate sniffs before turning her nose up at it.

The Blue, however, had no such reserves. He didn’t snap to attention until after Kytara had revealed her little treat. At that point, she quickly became the focus of all the attention the fat firelizard could muster, which was quite a lot. His flight was a good deal less graceful than Pyrite’s. it was more like a fall, indefinitely postponed. Landing heavily----for a flitt---in front of Kytara, he snatched the meat away from her and stuffed it into his little jaws. And then Kytara was his best friend forever! Eyes swirling blue, he nuzzled her hands, hoping that another treat might appear by magic.

“You’ll never get rid of him now,” C’ren drawled lazily. “He’s an endless pit, that one.” He had opened one eye just long enough to make sure the firelizards wouldn’t cause any trouble. Once he was assured that everything was fine, he went back to his attempted nap.

She frowned further as Pyrite turned her nose up. "Shard. I just knew it." She squeak in sudden suprise as Vox dropped in front of her. He was beautiful. Just a beautiful as the little gold she had intended the sorry excuse of a treat for. She dug around in the pouch in delight as she searched for more jerky.

Shyly she looked up at C'ren, "Really? And what does she like? I wouldn't want to insult her a second time." As much as that sounded like a jab at the small gold, Kytara was very serious. She adored the firelizards as much as she did the dragons in the Wyer. She finally produced the bag of jerky she had taken from the kitchen a few days ago. It had been meant to sustain her the next time she faded out into her writing, but she could always go get more.

F'sey watched the the girl try to make friends with Pyrite, grunting and shaking his head. Vox was easy to win over, Vox even liked him and that was saying something about the fire lizard's taste in people. F'sey hadn't quite believed his roommate the first time he described Vox as such a deadglow, but...yeah, Vox was a sharding fool.

Shuffling impatiently, F'sey strode over to C'ren and ruffled his hair. Not entirely sure that would wake the younger green rider, he began to prod him. Hard. "Hey. Lazy bones. Up!" He shook C'ren again and gave him a good ruffle. "Up up! You can sleep later. You need to go find me some more players, 'Ren." A hard poke with his boot.

Somewhere in the back of his mind, Ialluth scolded him for being so mean to Ceylith's, but the scolding barely had any weight behind it. He could ignore it.

"C'ren, let's go."

In many ways, Vox was the complete opposite of the graceful Pyrite. She was bigger than him, even now, but he was heavier. It was a marvel of biology that he managed to get into the air at all with his extra weight. Whereas she was all grace and poise, the Blue was clumsy and chubby. He even had a distinct walk; C’ren referred to it as a ‘chubble’. Like a waddle, except fatter.

“Unless you’ve got fresh fish in there, Pyrite won’t be impressed,” C’ren said with an unapologetic shrug. And even then it was an iffy thing. She was just a picky little creature, who knew that people would fall all over her and made no attempts to dissuade them from doing such. Song certainly fell all over her. Since C’ren didn’t bother opening his eyes again, he had no warning before the ruffling occurred. He attempted to bat F’sey’s hand away, but it didn’t go so well.

And then the poking. C’ren let out a noise of surprise at the hard poke and, once again, attempted to put a stop to it by trying to catch F’sey’s foot. It didn’t work, mostly because he wasn’t watching. Finally, he sat up and set a bleary glare on his roommate and attempted to fix his hair. “Shards, ‘Sey. You know I hate it when you do that. And look! You got a bootprint on my clothes! A bootprint! You’re going to have to wash these later, you know.”

Since he knew that F’sey wouldn’t leave him alone unless he agreed, C’ren got up and stretched. He took his sweet time about it too, mostly because he knew it would bother the older Greenrider. “Don’t feed him any more. He’s on a diet,” he said back to the girl, realizing that she was going to feed Vox some more. The very nerve!

Meanwhile, Vox gave Kytara the ol’ Big Eyes trick. Anything to suggest that he was in dire need of food, regardless of what his physique might imply.

The gather was a relief. He was mostly anonymous here, he could avoid the glares of his fellow candidates if he chose, and he finally had a little time to himself. He wasn't sure why the tent had attracted him, but when he was greeted with the mention of poker... He did like a game of cards, and he didn't really have anything else to spend his marks on just now. He might even manage to win himself a friend for Gilden if he was lucky, it seemed.

The golden flitt in question chirruped a greeting to the two others in the tent as Conomor headed over to the table. "Hi," he said with a smile as he sat down. "I'm Conomor, this is Gilden." He hoped she wouldn't fight with the other queen flitt. He saw no reason why she should, but she'd never met another queen before so who knew. Her mood seemed calm, however, so he doubted there would be any trouble.

E'rik wasn't usually one for gambling, having gone to some effort to learn how to cheat in his youth, which caused him to promptly lose interest in the whole affair. Many games become less fun if you're thinking about how easily you could win them just by adjusting your morals, but that was a slippery slope, and E'rik had no desire to go down it. He tried to tell himself it was enough just to play the game and watch to make sure no one else was cheating, but it wasn't. It really wasn't.

The only reason he had come by the gaming tents at all was because he was supposed to meet Firyal. He'd offered to introduce her to the Ista Hold Harper, who was someone he'd known briefly at the Hall. Firyal had this amusingly naive idea that all Harpers were fascinating people and well worth knowing just because of their profession. As if there weren't boring Dragonriders. She should know that better than him, even, having lived in the Weyr for six years.

At last he caught sight of her making her way through the crowd, flinching away from being jostled by people who crowded too close. He'd been somewhat surprised to learn that Firyal was incredibly uncomfortable with physical contact, considering how easily she handled her firelizard. She assured him that was like comparing dragons and tunnelsnakes. Numenor was perched on her shoulder, hissing ferociously at people, though the sound was lost in the crowd. She looked a bit overwhelmed by all the people.

"Firyal," he called, his trained voice carrying easily over the crowd to reach her. She finally turned in his direction with an expression of unmistakable relief.

"I'd forgotten what Gathers are like. I've missed the last several ones. I didn't think I'd make it to this one, either," she said once she had reached the little island E'rik inhabited which was created by a cart with a broken wheel.

"Glad you made it. Trouble in the Weyr?" After running into Mal after the Hatching E'rik had been surprised to learn Firyal had been involved in an accidental gathering of failed Candidates on the beach that had been broken up abruptly by Z'nal and ended with all the Candidates being assigned privy duty. Firyal, as part of the original group, had said duty until the next Hatching, though those who hadn't been involved were done after a sevenday. The reaction hadn't been pleasant.

"Nothing to worry about. I just got busy. Are you going to play?" She nodded toward the tent where a game of dragon poker was being set up.

"I don't think so."

"Do you mind if I do? It's been an age since I've played cards. I'll probably embarrass myself and lose within a hand, so it won't take too long." She was always doing that. Subtlely putting herself down and then laughing like she was joking.

"You do that. I'll go see if I can find Ista's Harper, so you won't have to follow me around while I look for him. I'll bring him to the wine stalls. He's likely to be there anyway, since he'll have to do a turn playing or singing for the dancing."

"Okay," Firyal said, ducking into the tent as E'rik went his own way.

Wei had come to the Gather, predictably enough, on business. Having just recently established her research base at Ista Weyr, she'd been greatly looking forward to the excuse to meet with the other Starsmiths in the area and collaborate data with them - only to find remarkably few wearing the tabard of the Starhall at the Gather. Why, she couldn't imagine - even if they weren't weather specialists like her, surely someone would want to get a vantage on the Red Star from here!

But perhaps they'd chosen to stay at their research for the day. Lamenting, Wei wondered if she should have as well; but she'd gotten her morning measure of the skies already, and she could get a broad idea of the afternoon from here. Besides! Balor had always told her that living life to the fullest meant enjoying the fruits of one's labor, not just planting the seeds. She'd worked terribly hard to reach Ista, and she might as well take the opportunity to enjoy herself!

So she'd gotten herself some wine (a bit early in the day, but that didn't much seem to bother her - there was no perfect time to enjoy a good vintage!) and wandered the Gather a while, before coming at last on the gambling tent. Peeking inside, the dark-haired girl wandered in, quickly scoping out the scene.

"Cards, is it?" Wei asked drolly, making her way to the table. "Room for one more?"

T'ka had never been one to possess any notable amount of money. Being a smith apprentice, and a girl one at that, had never really brought in much. Usually just what her dad had given her to spend. But imagine things now with Haanyath. If she ever had a spare moment, why, people were practically all over her here, asking her to do things, usually minor chores, but sometimes Haanyath could asist her. She'd never imagined going between could prove quite so handy. And the younger Weyrlings were bursting with letters to be delivered to families in Ista, something T'ka was happy to assist with, for a small fee.

She had never been much for gambling, though she wasn't terrible. Her placid attitude lended itself to apathy, something usually proving beneficial in games involving bluffing. So why not try poker? Xythe the little green flit, and Daeok the bronze were perched on her right and left shoulders, respectively. No, she didn't really come here to win, just to...socialize a little. If she won a flit egg, she would gift it to her notorious cousin. That girl could use a flit; maybe then she wouldn't be bothering Haanyath so often.

Offering two marks, she took a seat in the tent, leaning back in her chair and looking nonplussed. Thanks to Haanyath's...less than pleasant demeanor, people didn't seem to hang out with her much. Thus the already socially distant T'ka was outted from any social group she might possibly have been in. True, she wasn't great with people, and she didn't like to get out much, but sometimes it was nice to get out just a little.

Xythe, feeling ignored because of the two queens, squeaked and shuffled, looking annoyed. As well as a flit can portray the expression of being annoyied. Clambering on top of T'ka's head, Xythe spread her wings to their fullest, trying to show off. Daeok had no eyes for queens. He care little for females of his species in the romantic way. He was all about fun. Fun and...food. Food? Spying Vox, the eager way he watched that girl, and the lingering smell of jerky...why Daeok perked right up. He swooped hastily to the table, scampering over to sit next to Vox, putting on his best 'feed me' face. T'ka had no mind to scold him. Daeok just...had a healthy interest in food.

<> Haanyath complained.

Upon entering the tent Firyal automatically handed over the entry fee. One of the nice things about having a firelizard was that people were always keen to get ahold of their eggs, and though Numenor had only once flown a female, and a green at that, she and the other firelizard's owner had made a tidy profit distributing the eggs to desirous folk. Most of the marks she'd made from that enterprise she left with the Headwoman so that they wouldn't go missing, but she'd brought a few with her to the Gather on the off chance she'd see something she wanted to purchase.

As her eyes adjusted to the dimmer light inside the tent, Firyal looked around to identify the company she had fallen in with. The Greenrider who seemed to be in charge was one she was at least nominally familiar with, and she recognized the other Greenrider as his weyrmate, though their relationship might not be exactly what the title entailed. Gossip rarely reached her ears in anything resembling a timely manner, and she didn't care if it did or didn't, so she had no way of knowing whether there was anything to the speculation about the pair of short-tempered Dragonriders.

She saw two female Candidates that she'd not gotten around to meeting, considering her recent habit of going out of her way to avoid Candidates. Neither of them had been among those who were conspiring to make her life miserable as far as she knew, but she was still wary of them. The adult woman who spoke drolly was also unfamiliar to Firyal, but she wore knots indicating her affiliation with the Starhall, and so whether she was one of the weyrfolk or not, she was an object of some curiosity to Firyal, though she would contain her curiosity in favor of good manners.

The tent's other occupant was actually brought to her attention by Numenor, who was predictably excited to be in the presence of two golden firelizards. He was a bronze, and it was only to be expected, she supposed, but she would rather that he left the more familiar gold, Gilden, alone. She remembered Conomor from the night of the Hatching. Their acquaintance had been brief, but unpleasant. The evil looks he reserved for those he blamed for his besmirched record were almost enough to make her turn around and see if she could find Aderyn or E'rik or maybe Veyes, but she was already here and she had already found herself a seat and added her ante.

Behave, she pleaded with Numenor. Stay.

The bronze was obviously reluctant to be restricted to his perch on her shoulder, but Firyal was insistent and he obeyed, despite his desire to interact with the golds.

Oh, good. More players. C’ren wasn’t usually happy to see more people, but these ones were special. They symbolized the hope that he might be able to take a nap after all.

“Right, right. Yes, there are still seats,” C’ren said wearily, waving a hand at the chairs around the table. “Just give F’sey your bets…”

Oh, Mine… you could have been off of Nightwatch long before now, you know, Ceylith sighed in his mind. At times, her rider’s sheer stubbornness simply exasperated her. He knew he had done something wrong. He knew that he needed to sleep more. And, yet, despite these simple facts, he still wouldn’t man-up and just talk to Coriath’s. Such a pity. The world would be a much better place, Ceylith reflected, if people just talked more.

…Well, except for Hers, perhaps. He usually only said nasty things. And, of course, F’sey kept Hers up as well, she reflected thoughtfully.

C’ren ignored his dragon’s useful advice and, instead, watched his flits carefully, especially Pyrite. At least the little Gold was behaving herself fairly well. Pyrite’s eyes went wide at the sight of the larger Gold and she sent a brief whistle of greeting towards her. In her life so far, she had never met another Gold. But the Bronzes commanded more of her attention, honestly; the only Bronze she knew, Song, absolutely adored her, and she knew of no reason why these ones wouldn’t either.

Vox was just as excited about the presence of the other firelizards, especially Xythe and Gilden. In all honesty, the fat flit had a larger chance of catching a disease than a female, but that didn’t mean he wasn’t willing to show off for the ladies. Since it was obvious that he wouldn’t get any more treats from Kytara, he puffed up his chest and strutted for Xythe.

C’ren considered putting a stop to it, but decided to let Vox continue. At least he was getting exercise. Besides, he really was harmless.

Producing her bet from a pocket on the inside of her tabard, Wei held it openly in the air, but stalled when it came to actually handing it over. Instead, the black-haired woman eyed C'ren with a tight smile.

"Before I ante up, I need assurance... you won't be having those pretty little lizards peeking at anybody's cards, will you?" Her eyes flicked pointedly to Conomor, Firyal and T'ka as well. Whatever else anyone might think of the Starsmith, she had never been anything but sharp and shrewd. It was hardly a fair match if some of the players had spies telling him everyone else's cards, after all - and well, it seemed like most the players had a one-up on her, in that regard. Wei wouldn't have a mark to spend if she wasn't careful about where she laid it down, and she wasn't going to start being lazy about it now!

Lanakirene wasn't one of the most accomplished gamblers by any means, but she wasn't one to pass up the opportunity for a flitt egg. That, and she was beginning to wonder if F'sey wasn't as nasty as his reputation would make him out to be. Not that she'd ever mention that to anyone; reputations were important, after all. But she stepped into the tent and met F'sey's gaze with almost no nervousness at all. Grinning at him, she fished a pair of Marks out of the bottom of her nearly-empty belt pouch and dropped them on the table so they skittered in F'sey's direction.

"If there's eggs, I'm in," she said brightly, sinking down into an unoccupied seat and taking stock of all the flitts already in existence. Shards, there were enough, weren't there? No wonder F'sey was trying to gamble them away. And it wasn't like the gamblers needed any more. Did she have anything for them? Searching her pockets and belt pouch, she came up just as empty handed as she thought she would have. Pity, that, but whatever. It wasn't as if they needed the food; particularly the little blue. Mostly, she admired the smaller Gold. Giving C'ren a little smile, she indicated Pyrite with a forefinger. "Your little Queen is gorgeous," she said.

Leaning her elbows on the table, she gave T'ka a vague look and tapped her nose thoughtfully with a forefinger. She couldn't help but wonder whether the other girl was in a situation similar to hers. After all, she was the only girl who had shortened her name. Her gaze wandered to Firyal, who she knew by name but not much about otherwise, and then to the other girl, who she thought she might be able to place but wouldn't have put Marks on. Probably someone Searched after she Impressed, if she didn't even recognize the face. Conomor she recognized. She sent a quick smile round the table.

The adult, she didn't know, but when Wei spoke, she grinned at her. "I like you," she said decisively.
