 Gh'lan

Name: Gh'lan, formerly Ghilani Age: 22 Height: 6'2" Sex: Male Orientation: Heterosexual Craft: Former Starsmith Rank: Wingrider Song: Follow Me
Physical Description:
A tall and striking young dragonrider, Gh'lan embodies most of what holder women would call 'handsome.' Genetics gave him a strong set of even teeth that he maintains fastidiously, along with an athletic, correctly proportioned, build that will carry the full bloom of youth well into his late thirties. His dark brown hair is cut just above the shoulder and is slightly wavy, while his deep mahogany brown eyes carry a sparkle in them that speaks volumes of his character. He has a tendency to walk straight and stare deep beyond the horizon line, though the reason for this is not purely for the romantic effect it has on females. Gh'lan often jokes that the future is just beyond the horizon, and if he watches for it long enough... it may just share some of it's secrets.
Personality:
Cheerful and outgoing to a fault, Gh'lan more then made up for the stereotype of his former craft. While his old Master and the rest of the senior apprentices and Journeyman took pride in their personal work and achievements, Gh'lan took pride in them and their work as a craft.
He truly believes that science and continued study of the Ancients will change the world, despite the efforts of critics and those ignorant people he dubs 'deadcells.' Surprisingly, Gh'lan has remained oblivious to the effect of his good looks on the females of the Hold, and if it weren't for his approachable attitude and easy-going smile, he'd more then likely have more enemies then friends. Yet his fellow apprentices value him as a comrade, and do nothing more then good-naturedly tease him when (yet another) girl confesses their affections to Ghilani's complete shock and embarrassment. He's never been a ladykiller, despite his looks, as he values friendships far more then pleasures of the flesh. He is self-reliant on a personal level, needing no one to pat him on the head and tell him everything is going to be alright since he was a boy, but he thrives on knowing people are listening to him. He becomes easily frustrated (much like Khunoth) when he cannot come up with a solution to a problem. Unlike the brown, who bellows his displeasure for all to hear, Gh'lan just internalizes his struggles.
As time goes on, the growing bond with his dragon has forced Gh'lan to both seek outside of himself for comfort, and to really take a good hard look at where he is going with his life. He's just as idealistic and cheerful as ever, but Gh'lan is beginning to see that not everything in life is black and white. His introspective moments outnumber the times he ignores thinking about is personal future and 'safer' abstract concepts these days, much to Khunoth's relief. While the brown is teaching him to get angry when he needs too, without meaning too, he is also showing his rider the value patience. Khunoth wishes for his rider to blossom fully into the dragonrider Khunoth chose. The potential for this caring young man is limited only by his imagination, and it is with Khunoth's help that he will begin to see how far he can really go as the pair continue to mature.
History:
Raised by a doting foster mother, Ghilani grew up none the worse for the attention amongst a slew of other fosterlings. As such his people skills and patience are very well developed, and he can often be found relaxing with friends cheerfully debating the technicalities of some bizarre cosmic occurrence or merely discussing the latest gossip.
From a very young age he was always somewhere near the top of the social hierarchy, and this trend continued through his apprenticeship to the Smithcrafthall. Sadly, he showed little aptitude for the more technical aspects of the Smithcraft, and despite his favorable build, the thought of slaving over a forge for the rest of his life did not stimulate him. The only thing he DID show great skill in was his Draftsmanship, and that was where he spent a great deal of time in his early apprentice years, until a chance visit by one of the oldest Mastersmiths in the craft.
Old Enilion was known throughout the craft as a Starsmith, one of the Skywatchers who had trained beneath some of the students of Master Wansor himself. He was at Lani's crafthold for a lecture, and after the first introduction to the world beyond Pern's skies, Ghilani knew he had found something.
After his petition to Master Enilion was approved, Ghilani traveled with his new Master all across Pern, lecturing other smith halls and giving demonstrations of the Master's work to the holderfolk, though Lani's own input into these sessions was minimal, he enjoyed the work and took extra care when reproducing charts and maps for those interested. His Master, however, was not entirely certain what to do with Lani. The lad certainly had his heart in the right place, and he did not lack for skill in drafting and copying, but when it came to the original ideas that marked the Starsmiths as innovators... Lani just didn't have it. He could stare up at the skies and marvel at their wonders, but until the boy began to question those stars, rather then just revere them, he was not going attain the rank of master, let alone journeyman.
So old Enilion waited, patiently trying to cultivate the boy's curiosity during moments of leisure, and mercilessly drilling him in the basic mathematics of their craft when they were not on a lecture tour.
Four years of this, and while 'Lani did eventually start to ask more questions and provide some useful layman's insight that proved valuable when teaching the average pernese, he never showed the skills required for him to be promoted. As such, he was kept mostly in the background, proofing lecture subjects and drafting maps, all the while growing more and more disheartened in his own private way at the dead end this promising life was taking. Around this time Master Enilion was asked to present some recent observations about the Red Star to the Ista Lord Holder at one of the Gathers, and in attendance would be quite a few of the Ista Weyr dragonriders.
During that Gather, while he was (to be honest) sulking near the fire heights while his master gave the speech he had prepped for errors and painstakingly reproduced from his Master's barely discernible scrawl, he came across a trio of young Ista Riders playing a game of chance. Being of the Crafts, dragonriders did not have aura about them that they did for Holders, since Ghilani actually had to deal with them on a fairly regular basis whenever his Master was asked to attend one of the Weyrleaders. So he knew these men to be people, just like him, and far more approachable then the Stars he was growing to dislike. What was surprising was that they made the first overture of friendship when they caught sight of him.
Ghilani may have been moping, but he was no fool, and he knew that any game of chance grew better with players that already looked mentally out of sorts, and by all appearances.. he sure looked the part. But the friendly request was refreshing, and he accepted since he only had a few marks to bet, and they were his Master's marks that he planned to spend anyway.
In the end, he didn't lose everything (though it had looked grim for a few moments) and the group of Blue and Greenriders had cheerfully invited him to join them down in the square rather then continue with whatever he was doing up in the heights. Since he hadn't had fun at a Gather in ages, let alone danced, Ghilani agreed mostly out of petulance and a devil-may-care outlook on what his Master might think.
What he was NOT ready for was while the group of four passed the dragons, one of the two blues swung his great head around and all but decapitated Lani in an attempt to get a better look at him. (Or so his rider said later, laughing.) Startled by the unfamiliar behavior, Lani nonetheless stood his ground and just kept his breathing even (much to the amusement of the riders) while the Blue thoroughly sniffed him over.
Anticlimactically, once he was done, the Blue just repositioned himself next to his friends and went back to sleep (earning another round of laughter from the riders) leaving Lani standing somewhat shocked and a little embarrassed. To him, it seemed everyone (including dragons apparently) were out to ridicule him in some subtle but still hurtful way. But his overall good nature kept him from reacting negatively and he just drew a shaking breath and took a playful swat at the riders for egging their dragons to scare him like that.
The riders, however, were hiding their own surprise behind the teasing. They were not on Search yet, but the Blue's rider, J'set, knew what that particular display meant. So he took note of this boy, and promised his Blue that when the time came they would return for him.
Pets: Tada, his Green firelizard. Other/Talents: He is an EXCELLENT draftsman and mapmaker.

Another reason, another cause for me to fight Another fuse uncovered now, for me to light My dedication to all that I've sworn to protect I carry out my orders without a regret
My declaration embedded deep under my skin A permanent reminder of how it began No hesitation when I am commanded to strike You need to know that you're in for the fight of your life
You will be shown How I've become
Indestructible
The Hippo The hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) or hippo (Greek: ἱπποπόταμος, hippopotamos, from ἵππος, hippos, "horse" and ποταμός, potamos, "river") is a large, mostly plant-eating African mammal, one of only two extant species in the family Hippopotamidae (the other being the Pygmy Hippopotamus). It is the heaviest extant artiodactyl, despite being significantly shorter than the Giraffe.
The hippopotamus is recognizable for its barrel-shaped torso, enormous mouth and teeth, hairless body, stubby legs and tremendous size. It is the third-largest land mammal by weight (1.5-2 tons), behind the White Rhinoceros (3-4 tons) and Elephant (4-5.5 tons). Despite its stocky shape and short legs, it can easily outrun a human. Hippos have been clocked at 30 mph (48 km/h) while running short distances, faster than an Olympic sprinter. The hippopotamus is one of the most aggressive creatures in the world, and is often regarded as the most ferocious animal in Africa. There are an estimated 125,000 to 150,000 hippos remaining throughout Sub-Saharan Africa, of which Zambia (40,000) and Tanzania (20,000-30,000) have the largest populations.[1] They are still threatened by poaching for their meat and ivory canine teeth, and by habitat loss.

Brown Khunoth
For a brown, Khunoth has unusually short patience. He’s quite brusque, and he doesn’t like things to go on and on. He can’t stand incompetence, or what he perceives as so. Being a fairly innovative dragon, Khunoth can sometimes find a solution for the problems at hand, though when he can’t, he gets even more frustrated, and can get rather demanding towards the bronze dragons. He needs to be put firmly in his place, and then he’ll generally behave better, though he can still be rather uppity.
Despite being short tempered, Khunoth would much rather be lying in the sun, letting his green ichor warm slowly. It’s his way to distress, and to slowly gain the energy he needs to last through the day. He looks like a big brown from far away, but when you get close up, you realize he’s only about typical size. It might be do with his proportions, which tend to be a bit large and bulky, or it could be the way he carries himself- he does act like a bigger brown than he actually is, prone to puffing up his chest and trying to appear larger than he is to intimidate and bully his way into things.
Khunoth is a surprisingly picky eater, choosing only to eat the animals he thinks look the best. He loves the taste of wherry, though those take the longest to fill up his stomach. He’s a nearly insatiable eater, and tends to become rather overweight if he’s not very carefully maintained. This just further expands his need for discipline and a firm hand, or he’ll be a mess.
Khunoth is picky even in Flight. He chases only select females, and tends to be rather haughty with his choices. He’ll chase a Queen over a green, even though he stands zero chance of catching one. He’s not large enough or fast enough, though he does have a great deal of stamina. He’ll chase select greens, if he thinks they’re worth his time. He also prefers to go after older females, for a reason he hasn’t really made clear.
Khunoth could potentially be a good Wingsecond, of the riders in command know how to put him in his place. It would take a big bronze, and probably a show of teeth, but once Khunoth has been cowed, he’s obedient. He’s largely all bark and no bite, but he still requires that firm hand.

The Incan God Khuno KHUNO: High altitude Weather God who got fed up with humans messing about with his nice clean snow. He also didn't see why they should be burning things to keep warm.
Some kind of compromise was reached when he directed them to the cocaine plant. After a few nibbles of that, they didn't care how high they were or what the weather was like. They also became very protective of the snow. So it looks like KHUNO was the world's first drugs dealer. Is it any coincidence that 'snow' is a nickname for dodgy powdery stuff?
Oh God, Why Me? Ghilani's cheerful nature is in direct contrast to poor little Khunoth, the grumpy brown. Either Ghilani can help to calm Khunoth down, or the brown will learn to rile his rider up. the world will soon find out.
