Tseka hefted a huge bag of wood, which, despite her size and strength, required both arms to be carried. She had to bring it to the cooking area. Appearantly they needed wood for something? Hopefully not for cooking. True, wood was fairly plentiful now, but Tseka still found it distasteful to just waste the stuff on something like food.
The two mischievous flits, Xythe the green and Daeok the bronze accompanied her, flying circles above her, chirping and whistling without a care in the world, no doubt plotting their next trick, or how to steal food. They were always plotting something.
The bag was a bit bigger than Tseka had estimated. She had to lean her head to the side a little so she could see the steps. Blast it! She was going so slow it felt ridiculous. She could use some help. But...it was against her nature to ask for any. Being a girl in the smithing hall...she hadn't exactly had a lot of female company. She'd had to fend for herself all that time...so it was a big change to come to the Weyr. All these friendly, happy people. All of them excited and passionate, and most of them helpful and willing...why did there seem to be none of those around when she needed them? Of course, even if someone offered...she would have a hard time accepting, even if she needed it. She hated it! She cursed her rebelious nature. But it was deeply ingrained. She tried to be nice, tried to let people help her, and she was getting better, to be sure, but...it was difficult. Her manners weren't always the best, and it was true that sometimes she lacked subtlety and tact. But...no one was perfect, right?
She shifted the bag's position in her arms a little, trying to make it easier to carry, and to make it easier to see where she was going. This was just work. This was a part of life. No one ever said Weyr-life was going to be easy. And she hadn't assumed it was, so she bore no resentment over chores like this, but...wouldn't it be different to be one of those short, feminine girls who got to cook and be silly and flirt with men? Oh well...that simply wasn't her.

Wiping his face with a rag he kept tucked in his apron such such a purpose, Ghilani peered up at the midday sun with a grimace. This was not his usual shift, and were he being completely honest with himself, he'd admit that he kind of missed the Behemoth's giant overbearing presence lording over the kitchen staff while they smoked the fish for storage. As it was, his nose was a little runny from the smoke itself, and were the Behemoth here, she'd have already made fun of him for it. "Does that make me a masochist for missing someone who teases me like that?" He asked, apparently to empty air. The air was not empty, however, since his little green fireliazrd was coiled protectively around his neck, twinning herself amongst his hair and tunic like some elaborate emerald neck scarf. Tada was sleepy from the heat in the kitchens, and were it not for her exceptionally small size, he would have been forced to keep her out of the way somewhere. She woke up a little in response to his words, and trilled supportively, to which he nodded as if he had understood every note perfectly. "I guess so, ah well." He went on absently, scratching the green under her chin. To any onlookers it might have looked like he was scratching his ear, which reminded him again on how he missed the night shift in the kitchens. Sighing, he removed his hand and looked about, less then thrilled with the thought of going back into the kitchens to continue stoking the fires. He suspected he already had ash in his hair, and while he was not as fastidious about it as most women were, he was quite certain his head would be itching later. Tada wasn't helping by constantly moving and pulling on his hair and ears, but he couldn't yell at her for it too much. Yelling would have meant inhaling more smoke... Sighing again, he was about to turn to go back in when he spotted a tall figure making their way up the steps heavily burdened by a cord of logs. Initially he sagged a little when he realized they meant more sooty work for him, but he quickly got over it when he realized that the figure was obviously struggling a little with the heavy bundle. "Tada, hold tight." He said quickly, moving down the remaining stairs to stranger. "Hey, want some help with that?"

It took Tseka a moment to realize someone was talking to her, and by then, it was too late. Seeing another flit, a possible playmate, Xythe shrieked in joy, startling Tseka more than she would have liked. In a display of clumsiness, something usually foreign to her, she jumped a little, dropping her bag.
Clatter! Bang! Crash! went the wood, spilling out and tumbling about in a most chaotic fashion. Tseka blinked a few times, as if needing a moment to understand what happened. And then she started to get a little angry. Why would someome suprise her like that! (Of course, in her mind, Xythe was never blameable) She looked up glowering, only to find a rather handsome looking boy, maybe a year or two older than her. At first, she felt a little inclined to dislike him. Tseka had a lot of problems with generically good lucking, alluring males. She didn't trust them. She knew it was unfair, but...she couldn't help it. She would try and give him a chance. There was no telling if it would work or not. At first glance, he didn't appear to have a firelizard. So why was Xythe so excited? Oh! There, around his neck. A pretty little green. But also the cause of the mess...oh well. Tseka had a hard time blaming flits. They usually didn't mean any harm...and...maybe if Xythe hadn't shrieked like that...well, whatever. She had a mess to clean.
Tseka stooped over, gathering the wood hurriedly and replacing it in the bag gently. "Yes, I...suppose I could use some assistance..." she chuckled, shaking her head. Of all the luck! She was going slow enough as it was. This little cleanup was only wasting more time. Not that she really had anywhere to be. She just liked to be busy. She liked to feel like she had to be doing something, to help someone. When she had been a smith...all of her work was pretty much self assigned. No one gaves her tasks or jobs. After all, who thought anything of a female smith? So indeed, it was a pleasant change here. To feel that people actually notticed, and cared.
Xythe andDaeok, picking up on a bit of Tseka's anxiety, fluttered to the floor to help, the two of them attempting together to try and lift one of the logs, and looking quite peculiar. Tseka really laughed a that. It was hard not to. They looked so preposterously ridiculous, trying to lift up such a large piece with tiny little flit hands. But the darlings were trying, indeed! They managed to get it off the ground a little, and scoot it a little closer to Tseka, before they got tired, and dropped it, resigning themselves to her shoulders, and simply chirping their encouragement.

Tada squalled and hid in Ghilani's hair the exact moment the other green shrieked, surprising her bonded in a fashion not all that dissimilar from Xythe's bonded. The fundamental difference, however, was that Ghilani had not been carrying a load of heavy wood.
"Oh no-!" He said, just as the last pieces of it escaped the young woman's grasp and slid down the steps. Frozen, he could only blink at her, until his brain finally caught up with the rest of him and he started forward to help her clean up. "Would have been nicer to have assistance earlier though, I'm sure. " He said with some chagrin and a easy smile. He was well aware that all of the candidates would be called on to help with chores about the Weyr, and from her appearance and bearing, he hazarded the guess that she was a candidate as well. For all that most of them were no strangers to hard work, he wondered what fool of a supervisor had set this woman off carrying more then she could handle! "Well, between the two of us we can handle these yes?" It sounded like a question, but the young smith didn't wait for her to answer it.
Bending, he gathered his apron up behind him so it wouldn't impede movement and started gathering what logs he could, tying them together with the cord from his apron. Tada was literally fused with his neck, peering out from the dark brown waves to blink at the other lizards with mixed curiosity and fear. Following her gaze for a brief moment when he heard her warble uncertainly, he had to stifle a laugh at the girl's two lizard who were obviously trying to help. Adjusting his weight and the added load of the five logs he now had, Ghilani moved over to where the pair of lizards had left the log before retreating to their person's shoulder and picked up the piece. "Handy pair you have there! Have you had them long?" He asked brightly, standing up to his full height where he hoisted the logs over onto one of his shoulders. Tada squawked in indignation and moved, though Ghilani had been careful to use the side she hadn't been on.

Tseka found herself, not envious, but almost wishing that her flits, especially Xythe, was as shy and reserved as this boy's. At the same time, though, she wouldn't trade Xythe and Daeok for the world. They were here company, her constants, in such a strange world as this. In this new place, she didn't know many people, but Xythe and Daeok were always there, they were supportive, and loving. And as much trouble as they caused...they were more than worth it.
She finished picking up the wood, she tied it back up, tighter this time, though she didn't intend to make any more mistakes. Well, normally Tseka would have interjected that she could get it on her own, but...he didn't wait for that, instead taking it upon himself, literally. Though she frowned a little, inside, she was quite relieved. Normally she wasn't made to carry so much. But, because of her height and strength, the work had been getting harder and harder as more and more chores such as this were assigned to her. But she wouldn't complain. They would eventually realize that she was only human. And maybe then they would let up a little.
This boy...he didn't seem so bad. Certainly not one of those ridiculous weyrbrats with only one thing on the mind. Tseka had no time for that nonsense. She was in love with her work! Boys had no time in her schedule. She pondered the fact that he might actually be nice, and honestly helpful. Hm...she would wait and see.
"This is Xythe, and this is Daeok," she motioned to them each in turn with a jerk of her head. "They're little demons sometimes, especially Xythe, but...they're quite endearing..." Tseka smiled a little without realizing it, as her eyes became unfocused, obviously thinking fondly of something. Little Xythe, devil that she was, had been a gift from her father. She was one of the few things she had here to remind herself of him. She wouldn't say it outloud, but she missed him terribly.
"And I've had them...long enough. Long enough to get to know them, and to try and teach them manners. Daeok doesn't seem to display a particular interest in chasing females, but...I suspect Xythe will be rising soon. With my luck, she'll rise when I'm out on the hatching sand..." Tseka shook her head, only imagining how that would go. Would a dragon impress someone when they were pestered by emotions like that? Well, hopefully she wouldn't have to find out.
She started forward again, leading the way to the kitchens, and gestured to Tada, Xythe and Daeok reflections of her own curiousity. They stared at the little green from their shoulder perches. "What about her? Have you been companions long?" Tseka always found it easier to discuss flits and dragons with people that about people themselves. Maybe because flits and dragons...were more dependable? They didn't change, they didn't betray you, they were always the same. Dragons and flits didn't stab you in the back...But enough for dwelling! If this lad was helping her, she could at least try and provide pleasant company.

Ghilani chuckled, and reevaluated his first impression of this young woman. In all honesty he hadn't really given her a great deal of thought at first, aside from thinking she might have been a candidate, but the actions of her flits and her obvious adoration of them made him smile. He could understand the tenderness towards the creatures, Tada had positively ruled his life the first week of her hatching. "Just be be contrary eh? Well for your sake, and her's, I hope she waits until you are ready for it." He said easily, not at all put out by the thread of the conversation. He wouldn't have to worry about Tada doing something silly like that for a great long while... and Ghilani was quite happy to not think about what would happen when that day did come.
"Tada and I have been hapless romantics for three sevenday now, according to my roommate. But I like to think of it in terms of master/apprentice roles... with Tada being the obvious master." He answered with a self deprecating smile. He could admit that he must have appeared quite the starry eyed idiot when his little green first hatched, but, well that was the past.
Shifting the load on his shoulders, he glanced up the stairs quickly then back at the girl. "Were you heading to the kitchens with this load?" Redundant question, he was quite certain that she was, but it was a good habit of his to double check almost everything.

Tseka rolled her eyes a little, sighing. "I can only hope so to. I can't even imagine what an idiot I'd look like out on the sands..."Tseka scratched under Xythe's chin, and despite her worrying, she smiled at the little green. "You wouldn't do that to me, right Xythe?" Xythe chirped in response, nizzling Tseka's cheek; neither confirming nor denying the question. Typical firelizard. Or maybe it was because they had a hard time thinking about the future? Fire lizards were very much oriented aruond the now.
Tseka cast a little glance at Ghilani over her shoulder. "Tree sevendays? That's good. I can't recall just how long I've had these two..." she chewed her lip, as if trying to recall, but then shrugged and gave up. It wasn't like it mattered much.
It was funny...Tseka loved her pair, but she had never been gaga over them. The short romantic period betwen her and Xythe was, well, short. As soon as Xythe knocked over a bucket of water, scattered Tseka's blueprints with a flap of wings, etc. etc. she realized that this wasn't going to be easy. They could be friends, companions, they could love each other, but it would take work, at least on her part. Xythe seemed to have no qualms about causing trouble and then returning contently and happily, as if she'd done nothing.
It might have been better if she had gotten Daeok first. He was the sweet one. The mellow one. The snuggly one. He went gaga over her. In fact, when he wasn't eating(A favorite pastime for him), he was just about always with Tseka. Curled around her neck, on her shoulder, in the crook of her arm. Daeok loved to be loved. He was putty in her hands.
She shifted her bag a little, not willingly to admit how much lighter it was, how much more manageable. But she was thankful. She just...didn't want anyone to think she needed help. "Exactly. Why the kitchen wants wood is beyond me, but...whatever. I'm not a cook, nor anything close. I'll do the labor, as long as I get food." she mused. Which was pretty true. She worked all day, so she wouldn't feel guilty about the massive amounts of food she consumed, along with Xythe and Daeok's constant snacking. And then she had room and board. AND a chance to impress? Why, this was the greatest place ever! Tseka was in love with the Weyr, to be sure.
They were almost to the kitchen now. Tseka could smell something baking closeby, that made her mouth water. Daeok smelled it too, for he sat up a little taller, sniffing the air with gusto and chirping a few times excitedly, expectantly. He was going to get food!

Ghilani quirked a brow at her strange word choice, and half turned to head up the remaining steps. "Well, if it helps any... we are using the wood to stoke the fires. We got a large shipment of fish today from Ista Hold, and the Headwoman wants all of it smoked and in storage before sundown." He said as he ascended up to the kitchen area, increasing his volume so the girl could hear him without him having to turn around.
"I'm due for my break once this wood is settled, would you like to join me for lunch? Hauling this load must have you hungrier then a hatchling." He added benignly, unaware of her firelizard's antics. "Most of the ovens are prepping for the Post-Hatching feast, but I'm sure I can convince someone to let a few choice tidbits sneak by." He continued after a brief pause as he opened the door to the back of the kitchens where he had come from. There were already a few piles of wood, so it would be plenty obvious where the new stuff would go, so Ghilani did not bother to instruct her. He trusted she had eyes that worked well enough!

Now it was Tseka's turn to quirk a brow, making a face Ghilani couldn't see. Surely he just didn't ask her to join him? Why would anyone do that? She was under the impression that her company was tolerable, at best. Why would someone go out of their way to spend time with her? Surely she wasn't appealing in any way, shape, or form. But oh well. Boys were so strange. If he wanted to victimize himself...well, she would be his guest! She smiled to herself, inwardly pleased that at least someone seemed dumb enough, or perhaps even enjoyed her enough to at least want a little of her company. Aside from Xythe and Daeok, she didn't have much interaction in the Weyr. She always kept herself busy with chores. "Your motivation is beyond me, I must say, but I would be delighted to join you. I feel hungry as a hatchling. Let's just hope I find it in me not to eat that much. I fear I would be crushed under the girth that would be my stomach."
Tseka deposited her load with haste. She wasn't in the mood to do any more toting of things, at least for today. Hopefully she'd only be given easy tasks after this; she was ready for a nap right now, and the idea of any more backbreaking chores only increased her fatigue. Just the thoughts made her tired!
She mused momentarily on how exactly he was persuasive enough to get food. Did he know someone here? Was he in a relationship with one of the cooks? Surely good looks were quite handy when trying to get someone to help you out. Whatever. Tseka decided not to bother with curiousity at the moment. She was in the mood for food and chatting. She hadn't many people to discuss the upcoming hatching with, though like any other candidate, she was thoroughly excited. Who didn't want to discuss eggs?
"Food would be lovely, I must say. Is there anywhere you have in mind for us to take our lunch?" Tseka rarely used the dining hall, but if that was where Ghilani was comfortable...then she would try and get used to it.

Ghilani chuckled and gave a shrug of his shoulders when she mentioned motivation. He'd be the last fellow any girl would need to worry about, as his ulterior motives usually included acquiring spare time for his own pursuits and making friends. "Only motivation I need is common decency, and I wouldn't worry about being overfed here... they tend to rush us candidates out with a broom soon enough if they think we're dallying too much." He said with another grin. He'd continued with the assumption that she was a candidate, but the flow of conversation just hadn't afforded him the opportunity to ask her name and occupation just yet unless he forced the question.
"I can think of a few spots, two of which are outside while the other is in the dining hall with the rest of the weyrfolk." He offered as he too left his load of wood with the others. "Of course, the two outside spots have the advantage of allowing for some relaxation, being free of swinging brooms and all." he added with a chuckle. As always, he meant nothing scandalous by the invitation, and was quite oblivious to the implication that he might be trading off on his good looks for anything. Whether it be female company or kitchen privileges. If he'd known, he'd have laughed and told Tseka all about his rocky beginnings with the kitchen help that had eventually earned him the recognition to ask for a favor now and then of his friends. Well, from some of his friends... the Behemoth would probably still swat his hand like a apprentice trying to steal from the Master's table.

T'ka was honestly confused by Ghilani. What was he up to? Or was he really this charming and honest. It was hard read him. She bristled a little, biting back a retort as he commented about the outide areas. Hopefully he was being nice and sincere. But despite her build and relatively masucline, she had quite a bit of trouble beating off smiths back at the hall. Probably because most of them were deprived of girls, they thought even someone like her would suffice. She still bore a lot of resentment towards boys. She held herself in check as she replied, than she was able to keep all of the bitter skepticism out of her voice. Eating outside would be...nice. I usually don't like to be around people." she would let him decipher that bit as he pleased, or not at all.
She scooped Daeok from her shoulder, nestling him in the crook of her arm like a baby as she stroked his tummy, which, for now, was rather empty. That was rare. No doubt it would also soon be remedied. Not sure what to discuss, she found herself wandering back to the topic of flitts. "I suppose we've already covered the topic of firelizards, but I forgot to ask. Just how did you come to be bonded to your little green anyway? Where did she come from?"

If Tseka only knew what saying things like 'not liking being around people' meant to Ghilani, she likely would have refrained... Florian had certainly learned that lesson soon enough, though Ghilani liked to think that he was doing his antisocial friend a favor by introducing him to everyone he met as if they were brothers. To be fair, Florian had never had a problem, per se, dealing with people, it had just never been his forte, and he had admitted as much to his roommate on two separate occasions. Not that Ghilani went specifically out of his way to toss the Healer Journeyman into unexpected social situations...
...He just threw him into expected ones.
Watching Tseka with appraising eyes, Ghilani attempted to intuit why she'd not usually like socializing, but gave up in favor of his growling stomach. Time would tell, he was sure, and given that he'd just met her, he wouldn't go out of his way to put her ill at ease. "Not a problem! Near one of the Weyr entrances is a nice spot where riders and weyrfolk often take their lunches, it's got plenty of benches and overlooks the sea." He'd found it on one of his errands when he had first been assigned to the kitchens after his foolhardy attempt to filch a meal, and had visited the spot often. The palm trees provided excellent shade, and a few enterprising weyrfolk had gone as far as to construct a four poled shade building of sorts, made with some left over metal sheeting and stacked stone.
"Tada? I got her at the last Ista Gather... funny that you mention it too... since I hadn't really wanted to get a firelizard at all..." His mobile features settled briefly in introspection before he shook his head and grinned at Tseka again. "Whatever the case, I'm glad I did, she's a good friend." He finished, reaching up to rub Tada's eyeridges. Trilling musically, the little green accepted the caress lovingly, her eyes whirling a light blue green. As he did, he unconsciously weaved his way through the 'back alleys' of the Lower Caverns and into the kitchen proper, bee lining for a knot of women grouped around a large hearth where a herd beast was turning.

Tseka had been the definition of antisocial, back when she was smithing. Her father knew better than to push her to socialize. Tseka did have problems dealing with people. Although she was getting better now that she was in a less hostile enviroment. The Weyr was doing wonders for her Psyche.
"That would be nice. I like the sea. I...have family in Southern. I think some of my relatives are Dolphineers even..." Tseka mused, smiling a little. Maybe she liked the ocean because it ran in her blood? Whatever. Her smile disappeared, save for a small twitch at the edge of her lip, where she couldn't completely hide her pleasure. What was wrong with her? Surely it was juvenile to enjoy the company of someone else, especially a boy. Boys were gross and stupid. Even more so than girls.
Maybe Weyr boys were different? She did recognize that she was slightly biased from living as a smith all her life. Hrm. It couldn't hurt to maybe give Ghilani a little bit of a chance, could it? Smiling a little more, she tried to lighten up. Somewhat sucessfully. Picking up on her human's change of attitude, Xythe chirped in curiousity, but other than that, the change was mental. What was she to do, stop Ghilani and apologize for her partially frosty attitude? That would be absurd.
Sniffing at the air, along with Xythe and Daeok, she felt her mouth water. Oh, the food was so good here! So much better than back at the smith hall! "That...smells good... she commented, trying to be more friendly, talkative. That's what friends did, right? Not that she'd ever presume Ghilani her friend. They'd just met. But the best way to make friends was to act like one. In addition to her small talk, she flashed him a brief, polite smile. Was she...doing this right?
"It's funny how accidents happen, isn't it? I didn't ask for Xythe or Daeok, but now...I couldn't live without them." The pair sqeaked their approval. "I wonder if impressing a dragon feels at all the same. I don't suppose you've spoken to anyone who knows?" Tseka had little knowledge of the Weyr, only what she gathered in her time here. She didn't have much experience with dragons, or their riders. Perhaps Ghilani had?

"Haven't the foggiest notion of Impression, dragons, or firelizards outside of my experiences with Tada here... to be honest." Ghilani admitted before he reached women around the hearth. "I have gotten the chance to a few folks about it though, but it hasn't made a great deal of sense." He continued, "but I do like to think of good accidents like the ones that acquire friends," and he paused significantly at this point, peering back at Tseka with a mischievous smile for the not so subtle comparison to their own meeting not to long ago. "as something a bit less then accidents and bit more like fate. Perhaps Impressing a dragon is a bit like that? Something for destiny to decide?" He finished, encouraged by the slight defrosting of Tseka's demeanor. Ah hah! So she wasn't all frozen through, just like Florian!
"Speaking of smells and smells that smell good, I happen to know a few of the ladies over there by that hearth. I'm sure we can wheedle something good from them, did you have anything in particular in mind for food?" 'Lani wasn't very picky himself, so long as it tasted good and went down easy he was happy. He also suspected that the Headwoman would have her staff keep at least one smaller hearth going for finger picking foods for hungry weyrfolk and dragonriders throughout the day. Meatrolls would be the simplest fare, but he thought he caught a whiff of some of those meat pies and melted cheese sandwich buns he liked so much.
