Now is not the time for an argument, Ceylith. C’ren’s own voice was a little petulant, an unusual tone for him. But he was feeling rather grumpy lately and all of the people around were making him even more testy than usual. Almost as soon as he had thought the words, he felt sorry for them. Ceylith didn’t deserve that… Sorry. I just don’t like crowded spaces. That part was quieter, slightly softer. A voice reserved, in fact, for Ceylith and Vox.
It’s alright, Mine. I know you. Ceylith, as always, was perfectly understanding. Above all others, she knew C’ren better than anyone else. Even better than his own family. Ha! Possibly even better than the man himself. It was impossible for her to hold a grudge against him for very long. Has the Brown Impressed yet?
Yes. To another smith of some sort. Apparently these dragons like smiths.
Perhaps they’re trying to cut back on the recent Harper invasion. The Green quipped lightly, mostly just to feel C’ren smile. Which he did.

Ignobly, Ghilani had been basking in the summer rays with Tada on his bare chest when the call came. All at once he found himself on his feet, uncertain of how he had gotten to them so fast, until his sunbaked mind finally caught up with the rest of him as he sprinted to the candidate quarters. Florian would know, he was a Healer and had Stood before after all, so Ghilani wasted no time trying to locate his missing friend after he had thrown on the white robe passed down from candidates before him. Florian had wisely taken his robe with him when he reported to the Healer quarters for duty that morning, and had left Roco here in their room. Tada, for her part, had taken to the air at the first sign of movement from him, and had followed him doggedly all the way to his cot. Now Ghilani took a moment to look her square in the eyes. "Stay here Tada, with Roco. " Then he turned to the brown who had been asleep on Florian's pillow. "Both of you STAY here!" He emphasized the command that both knew, and was gratified when Tada promptly sat, folding her wings neatly along her spine. Smiling down at her, he scratched her along her eye ridges once, then turned and swiftly skate out the door. Florian almost missed the call, since he was neck deep in pharmaceuticals in the Weyr's stillroom. The thick stone walls and comforting coolness was a soothing balm on the temper that often flared within him when the air grew hot. Blessedly, one of the apprentices came rushing in to tell him the news, and without so much as a second glance, he hurried after her, grabbing his white robe off the back of a chair as he did. Without modesty, he stripped off his outer tunic and undershirt, leaving on only his trousers and pulling on the robe as he ran to the Hatching Sands. Vaguely he wondered if Ghilani knew, but he figured that the cheerful starsmith would likely be one of the first to know, given how in sync his green firelizard was with emotions on smaller scale. - - -
As with the candidate lessons, the pair arrived almost simultaneously, though Florian did move off a ways rather then crowd in close with the young starsmith. Ghilani found that he didn't mind, especially not with the great Queen hovering above and a squat looking egg breaking shell. It was a green, and Ghilani found himself smiling faintly at the color comparison between the newly hatched female and his own green firelizard... ... But the comparison stopped there when the green dragonet promptly mauled one of the young women in her way and proceeded through the girls as if she didn't see any of them. Frozen, he could only watch as the green finally did stop, only to demand something of her new rider. Ghilani noticed with a start that the chosen of the little killer was Tseka, the girl he had met outside the kitchens that one day. Understandably, he wasn't certain if he was happy for her... Forcing himself to look away, Ghilani made a quiet, solemn vow to get out of the way of any approaching dragonets if they did not look interested... a vow that was aided by his current position at the back of the group of male candidates. He saw Florian start towards the wounded girl, he was Healer afterall, but stopped when one of the attending Healer's waved him off. Turning away when it appeared the situation was well in hand, Ghilani couldn't see the eggs very clearly, so he missed the actually breaking shell of his future dragon... ..As it was, the little brown had to force his way to the back before he could get to Ghilani. Gh'lan, your Khunoth is so hungry. But don't feed him the bad bits of meat. Just the good parts. I'll know. But I'm hungry. Feed me now!Blinking, Gh'lan just stared down at the brown stupidly, until the speckled creature took a warning snap at his hand. Feed me now!Instantly Gh'lan's brown eyes hardened and he frowned down at the dragonet... a rarity in and of itself. "I'll have have none of those teeth showing Khunoth, you need only ask me nicely." He said, placing his hands on his hips. The brown looked up at him belligerently for a moment, but Gh'lan kept staring him down until the hatchling finally gave a little in his body posture. ..Please?That was enough for a start, and a bright smile radiated down at the hatchling from his rider. "Of course! You'll have the pick of the bunch!" - - -
Florian watched his roommate Impress with mixed sympathy and pleasure. In a way he could appreciate what good Ghilani's good nature would do for the grumpy brown, but he felt that the dragon would temper the rider and perhaps instill a bit of competitive spirit into the boy. Smiling to himself, he turned back to watch the rest of the hatching. "Time will tell." he mumbled to no one in particular.

Having just been let out of Candidate Lessons, Lynna was halfway to a late Kitchen shift when her whole body thrummed with noise. Then the shout of a queen dragon in her ear. Shed heard that voice each time a Hatching started - but never had it seemed so clear as it did today! Suddenly aware what this meant, she turned back along the corridor nearly tripping over herself in her haste. Tearing into the Candidate's room she was dimly aware of jumping over cots, and tearing into her pack of clothing. She ripped her clothing off save for her underthings and flipped her candidate's shift over her head.
Things seemed to slow. She found herself outside, her thong sandals biting into her feet. Some male rider grabbed her and with a pitch of wind, they were off. She'd never been a dragonback before, and the momentary flight into the cavern was so short she barely noticed it was over before it began.
The next thing Lynna could think about was no matter how sweltering the weather had been, it couldn't compare to the sudden volcanic heat beneath her feet. Rocking from one foot to the other. she looked at the girls beside her, her heart fluttering horribly. Her stomach lurched. Swallowing back bile, Lynna saw the first egg tumble to pieces. A green. A green was heading this way! With sudden cruelty, the beast swung at an unworthy soul. "Oh Astri..." She felt herself call, then saw that the dragon had made her match in Tseka. Just so fast.
She felt tears p***k her eyes as the large brown tumbled forth from the color-sibling of the pink egg that had everyone's eye. The dragon found a pairing, and very quickly, Lynna found herself drawn back to watching the pile of twtching eggs. And the Queen egg.
****
The thrum of the Hatching was so sudden and loud that Terroll jerked awake, half thinking that he'd fallen asleep on the heights. Ripping sweat-soaked sleeping furs from himself, he was disoriented for a moment, when the queen's voice told him exactly where he was needed.
About half a weyr away.
Crying out in panic, he heard a sudden drum send off - the Hatching was already being announced via drumsong to the nearby holds. He flipped on his robe, and fishing for his new sandals, Terroll rushed out the door of the cot-hold, his hair wild and bent from having just been sleeping on it. Halfway down the hall, the other drummer who wasn't on duty at the moment met him and grabbed him from running down to the Hatching grounds the long way.
"Up to the heights, they've got a Weyrling to take you! Go!" The man smiled cheerfully at him. "Make the Hall Proud, boy - the drummers of the island send their best!"
Terroll turned on his heel, and launched himself up the rough-hewn stairs of the heights. Once in the free air, he heard the echoes of Ista Hold's tower sending confirmation. The Weyrling was there - a sturdy brown who bowed his neck low allowing his rider to grab Terroll's arm and help him up to a sitting position. The dragon took wing almost immediately, tipping itself over and into the Bowl, picking up speed as he went - Terroll's stomach leapt at the weightless sensation, mentally remarking that just a year from now he might be doing this on his own dragon!
Dropped behind the pack of boys already gathered, he jogged up to join them, feeling the soles of his feet beginning to burn through his sandals. It seemed he was just in time to see the first hatching. The big-boned green stamped over to the girls - Terroll found himself mentally remarking that the green herself was something like a female blue rider he'd met once - almost masculine in her gait.
Then another egg shattered, a clumsy pale brown hatching looked around. Terroll held his breath in awe. But the dragon didn't even begin to look his way before stumbling towards Ghilani. He was a Starsmith, Terroll recalled. He'd had the boy pegged for a blue, to be honest. No matter for that now, though. More eggs were hatching, and one of them might be his!

Rayale watched the Impressions, one by one, with wide eyes, though the image of the young woman with her white gown torn open lodged in his memory like a sharp edged fish bone. It wasn't as though he'd never seen blood before, people gutting the catch, men getting their hands ripped open by net barbs, knives, fins, escaping rope. The sea was a dangerous place but it was dangerous in an impersonal way, and there was something about the way the dragon had been so intent on it's final destination that it was willing to literally maul someone to get there... I was like it couldn't see anyone but them, or maybe it did see them, but it hated them for being in the way. That was the option that frightened him on a primal level, that suddenly made the entire experience much less romanticized, although the tight in the shoulders and chest robe, and the sandals that didn't do much to keep the sand from making his feet feel scorched, and him overheated, didn't help either. Maybe that was the real reason for the white robes, they were anonymous, and easy to remove for treating wounds... Or for burying someone in....Shards.

The second the humming had started, Mador had nearly jumped out of his skin. The Candidatemaster had mentioned this, briefly, in their lessons. The poor man all but ran back to his barracks, Fiari giving a screech of displeasure as she was thrown from his shoulder before flitting after him. Silently, the former Harper thanked Faranth he was already in his sandals. That would make things easier.
As soon as he was in his portion of the barracks, he was stripping and pulling on his white robe. Fiari flickered in from between right in time to get his shirt tossed on her, and she gave another screech of displeasure as Mador began to run back out of the barracks.
"Stay, Fiari! Stay!"
The urgency in his voice was enough to make the green flit forget her anger at him and curl up on his bed.
~*~
Meanwhile, in another part of the Weyr, Nenda jolted from a sound nap in her barrack, eyes wide with excitement. Vesonth's message had woken the girl from a sound sleep, and she quickly pulled off her night clothes and tugged on her candidate's robe before running in the direction of the Hatching Grounds.
As she arrived, the first egg began to hatch, bursting open into a small but visibly irritated green. And as the creature began to amble towards the girls, her heart began to pound in her chest. She'd be happy with a green... As long as she impressed! And then, in the excitement of the hatching, the dragon's claws tore into another girl's thigh, and the color drained from Nenda's face.
She sure hoped every dragon wasn't like this when they hatched...
~*~
"Shards!"
How had he gotten lost? Curse his sense of direction and thank Faranth for the kind weyrworker who had pointed him in the right direction. By the time Mador had made it to the hatching sands, they were already carting a girl out to be seen by a healer, and the first Impression was already over with.
The young man quickly jogged over to the boys half, too excited to even notice the heat of the hatching sands. And then the second egg opened to reveal an ambiguous hatchling. For a long moment, he thought it might be a bronze. But then the goop cleared to reveal a light brown, and he felt the tension rise as the dragonet ambled towards the boys.
Who would he impress?
Secretly, the young harper was glad the brown didn't injure anyone, even as he impressed another boy. He'd have to congratulate everyone later...

When the deep call rang out Riyinn was fast to get up, throwing on her cloths she was outta bed, the time was here.
When she reached the area it was already packed with others. She watched with amazement as the first egg hatched then another. Even if there was no impressing the hatching was something to see.
deep down she wished she could hold Kir over her jitters but tried to stay still in the grounds.

The green hadn't wanted him, but he wasn't surprised. However, after that little brute maimed one of the girls, Hesendek was a bit shocked it didn't go to Mo. They would have been two peas in a pod! The apprentice vintner sighed and tipped his head. Well, there was just no telling what the draconic kind was up to, was there? The sandy blond rubbed the back of his neck, still feeling horribly naked without his neckerchief.
Hesendek almost didn't notice the brown bumbling his way through the lads, only noticed something was going on when other boys started getting out of the way. After seeing what happened to that other lass? Hesen was getting out of the way, too! He watched the brown, but the hatchling had no eyes for him. He pushed right past and continued until he found His, someone Hesendek didn't recognize. Nevertheless, Hesendek was happy for the boy.
Sighing a little, Hesen turned his attention back to the eggs and pushed through the crowd a little. This was the first Hatching he'd ever seen; he should really be watching closely!

With her total attention snapped up by the newest hatched dragon, Kella seemed like she was zoning out. Her eyes were wide, and glued to a single object- in this case, the brown hatchling. She pursed her lips, frowning only slightly as he tumbled from the hippo egg. She'd pegged that one as blue, for sure! The young girl sighed and shrugged, there was no way to accurately predict them all (but Kella had been so very confident in her guesses, telling anyone and everyone she could!) and she had certainly tried her best. The little girl lost interest in the brown when he made his choice clear. He headed straight for the boys, not even giving the girls a second thought. With another shrug, Kella turned her head and began to watch the eggs again. Which one would hatch next? She shifted her weight uncomfortably back and forth between her two feet. The sandals on her feet did little, if anything, to block out the heat rising from the heated sands. She began to fidget impatiently, twiddling her fingers, looking all over the grounds, scrutinizing the rows of spectators, and just generally act like a young girl with a busy mind, but nothing to do. Finally, she settled on watching the eggs. "C'mon," she whispered, her impatience nearly tangible! "Hatch!"

After the brown had chosen someone in the back, Dhiren started bouncing a little on the balls of his feet as the heat started to come through his simple sandals. Now that the excitement had faded somewhat, the boy realized just HOW hot the hatching sands were...
"Ow ow ow ow!" He whimpered and hissed, doing some strange step-hop before he was finally use to the heat....somewhat. He settled and turned away from the eggs for a moment, staring up at the spectators seated on the walls of the Grounds. It took a bit of searching, but he managed to spy his father and mother higher up and he waved at them with a broad smile on his face. It was then he spied two more familiar faces: M'zaji was sitting a few feet away by a few other riders with Kaedrelath at his side as always. Smile widening, he jumped a little while waving at the two of them. He figured it be okay, since there was no hatchlings to distract out of their shells at the moment.
Dhiren could not be happier; his family was here, his hero was there watching him too, and he was standing for Impression for the first. Any more happiness and the lad was liable to explode.

Two hatchlings emerged, far too many others to go. La watched the brown stride up to his boy (she was fairly certain he was named Ghilani) and then turned her attention back toward the eggs. Where others might have been working to calm hearts racing faster than ever, now that the Hatching itself had started, La found herself strangely quiet. She knew what she was doing and how to do it, and if all she had to do was stand still or quickly get out of the way, then she would be fine. She was comfortable where she was standing, though a quick glance over the sands gave her the position of a good handful of the Candidates she liked the best. And there was the newcomer Hesen, obviously in the middle of the boys who had trooped out of the Brown's way...she smiled.
But she was curious about the rest of the eggs. What would come of the wildly patterned one she had touched first? And the brightly spotted eggs? .....And the vivid pink one. Though La was fairly certain whatever emerged from that, or any other, egg wouldn't Impress her, she did want to know what would come of it.
---
When no blood was shed by the brown, Hanya breathed a sigh of relief and let herself look over the eggs. As long as none of the other dragonets were so violent as the first one, she wnated to see what would come from them. She had very few acquaintances amongst the Candidates, so she didn't bother to look for them. As the heat from the Sands rose around her, she realized that she was sweating and that her feet were burning...she hated it. Picking up one foot, she balanced briefly, then put it down and did the same with the other.
At this point, she didn't care if she looked foolish.

The bluerider watched proudly, knowing that several candidates his dragon had searched were on the sands today. After the first impression (to TSEKA!) Kaedrelath had broken his hum to let out a triumphant bugle, startling some of the other dragons around him. M'zaji had just laughed. Take it easy, there, the rider warned his dragon. Neither wanted to upset either of the queens. They would both enjoy being able to stay and watched the entirety of the hatching.
They had arrived somewhat late; the bluerider had had a promise to keep. He had hastily thrown Kaedrelath's riding straps on as soon as the blue was aware of the imminent hatching. They had taken off in search of a trader's caravan, and found it fairly quickly. They'd picked up Dhiren's parents and brought them back, hurrying them into the sands. M'zaji had been worried that while they had been gone, that they'd missed something important. Had Dhiren been injured? Had he impressed? He had been relieved to find out that no such things had happened.
Now, looking on with pride and elation, M'zaji sought out the small boy. He grinned as the kid waved to him, and he returned the wave then gestured back to the eggs. "Pay attention, kid. Y'don't want to get yourself hurt," he murmured, thinking back to the girl that had been injured. He hadn't seen Astrisabe go down after finding herself in the green's path, but he had certainly heard about it. The spectators were abuzz when he had taken his seat, and several people had (without him asking, mind you) filled in all that he'd missed. M'zaji crossed his arms over his chest and leaned back in his seat, happy to watch the rest of the hatching from a safe vantage point.

Maranan was shoved to the side by the brown. He grunted at being shoved so. He was struck by how strong the little dragonet was. He righted himself and watched as the brown impressed. Everyone seemed on edge now. Waiting with baited breath for the next one to hatch.

Several long minutes passed with nothing to show for it. The eggs seemed to have gone a little quiet for the moment as if the entire commotion had been caused by the green and brown's restless nature. The rest of the clutch seemed content to keep the Candidates and onlookers waiting, taking their time to break free.
Commotion towards one end of the grounds broke the proverbial silence, attention once more focusing intently on the eggs. The sunset egg began to quiver a little more violently, the small cracks in the shell spreading over it with each blow from the little dragonet inside. Yet just when it looked like the shell could take no more abuse from the dragonet inside, it stopped. The air was still for a moment as almost every eye on the Hatching grounds stared at the sunset egg, the onlookers holding their breath. Had the dragonet died inside? Could it not break free? Was it too weak to push through the shell?
Another crack shattered the air, as well as the theories flickering through many people's minds, and a green stumbled a little clumsily onto the sand, her multifaceted eyes whirling in surprise and bewilderment, as if she had no idea what had just happened. For a moment she just looked around the Hatching grounds, looking but with not quite the urgency that the other two had had, stumbling forward a little before stopping again.

A'kor sat high in the sands alongside his beast, up near the ceiling. Lucieth was watching intently, his eyes swirling, his throat vibrating as he hummed to welcome each new dragonet. The redheaded brownrider leaned far forward to peer down at the candidates, watching as first a green, then a brown dragonet Impressed. He could pick out some familiar Weyrbrats down on the Sands among the Holder kids, remembering the bets he'd made with some of his wingmates on which of them would Impress. For a long moment he just stared at the recently-Impressed, recalling fondly his own first moments with Lucieth. As another green broke free onto the sands, he turned his attention to her, as did the brown beside him.
What do you think, Lucieth?
She's uncertain, the dragon answered him. But she will find Hers soon enough.
A'kor certainly hoped so. It was always so heart-wrenching when a dragonet went between...

It was quiet, so very quiet. And calm! Most unusual for a hatching. Kella pursed her lips, eyebrows coming together as the girl pondered on why such a long pause between eggs hatching. She shrugged, unable to come up with any sort of explanation. She was about to turn to the girl next to her and begin a conversation (about what, she had no idea, she just wanted to pass the time) when a commotion suddenly broke the monotony of rocking eggs. "Which one is it?" Kella asked the girl next to her, not even bothering to look at the candidate as she spoke. She hopped up and down, and lifted herself to stand on her tiptoes for a few moments, trying to see what was happening some distance away.
"Oh! A green!" She said, grinning excitedly. Her mind was immediately filled with happy thoughts; Kella pushed them towards the dragon gently. Vaguely, she wondered if the intensity of her thoughts diminished over distance. Kella didn't want to see another grumpy dragon, and this one didn't look as urgent or demanding as the previous two had been. She didn't want to take any chances, though, and made a great attempt to send as many warm, soothing, welcoming thoughts as she could towards the green.
