THEORY

The genesis of a mystical, saving end to a fatal situation is known as deus ex machina--literally, "god from the machine."

The human condition is the process of reconciling Man's biological state with Man's intellectual state--that is, the realization and attempts to control one's biological urges and processes, and the emotions arising from such attempts.

Man has always attempted to save Itself from the painful human condition, using science and religion to understand Its place in the universe.

But suppose, for a moment, that both have failed in their quest. Each taken by itself has not satisfied Man's quest. But, perhaps together...

Mankind has been forced into a fatal situation. As a species, it has become stagnant in an evolutionary sense, and only death awaits that which stagnates. If the species is to have a future, it must find a way out of this situation.

ADVENT

It was late 2007 when a small group of companies from across the world merged into an international conglomerate known as CHOIR Corp. While the new entity and its components were relatively unknown at the time, it soon grew to become a staggering giant in the world economy.

Food, fuel, electronics, weapons, automotives, pharmaceuticals, clothing, construction materials, housewares--all were produced by CHOIR, and the supreme quality of those products and their low costs allowed the conglomerate to skyrocket to the top of the game.

Naturally, the governments of the world were concerned. The idea of one super-company supplanting all others was an uncomfortable idea at best, and so attempts were made to split CHOIR into multiple smaller companies; given the popularity of the company, however, the people of the world opposed such measures. The free market was still there, of course, but other companies simply could not compete. One by one, they were either absorbed into CHOIR or faded into oblivion.

The people were content, however. CHOIR was a godsend; even as their competitors fell by the wayside, they kept their products at extremely low costs while continuing to improve their quality. And as the conglomerate spread across the planet, each and every nation began to benefit. Hunger and disease and poverty were seemingly vanquished under the company's watchful eye and guiding hand.

But not everyone was so easily pacified.

Rebel groups began to spring up only a few years after the company gained control, their common belief of CHOIR hiding a sinister nature uniting them across the globe. They all claimed that the company was conducting human research and experimentation; but naturally, the people of the world dismissed the rebels. How could something so great be so horrible? The only thing disrupting the peace brought about by CHOIR was the rebel presence.

And so the rebels were shunned. No matter the evidence brought before the people, it was dismissed as lies and propaganda. With the aid of their own paramilitary force, CHOIR began to sweep away the rebel threat.

It is now the year 2019. The rebel groups have almost been exterminated, but a new entry in the CHOIR database may rekindle the fight: XV-293R, "Enlightenment." Hackers found it by chance, and now they work tirelessly to spread the word of brutal human experimentation.

The world teeters on the brink of war.

EXPOSITION

With the spread of CHOIR's influence, the world became increasingly connected and refined.

Sectarian violence has essentially disappeared, and poverty, famine, and disease have ceased to exist. Fossil fuels have been replaced by inexpensive synthetics and the entire world has been connected by the electronic network known as OmniNet. Those few people not in the employ of CHOIR are employed by the new unified world government.

Military action has largely been relegated to the quelling of uprisings; with the standard of living now globally uniform, most types of violence have been resigned to the pages of history. People enjoy an incredible number of civil freedoms across the world; social norms can be subverted thanks to the existence of inexpensive international travel.

Many cities have been transformed by the presence of CHOIR. Major world cities, such as Tokyo, Rome, New York, Paris, London, and Beijing, have been reappropriated as "headquarter cities." These cities have been given the best of technology and have become centers of learning and culture; their architecture has undergone a process of unification, with many buildings sporting sleek, rounded looks in a silver finish.

The government has largely become a small, constant presence. A government building is present in each city, proportional in size to the city's population. Legislation, regulation, and local enforcement is carried out by the government; but as CHOIR has brought about great peace and harmony, the size of the government is rapdily shrinking. Their powers are largely ceremonial and superficial.

The future has been effectively realized.

PATHOGEN

At the end of 2018, a hacker snooping about in one of CHOIR's databases stumbled across a folder that confirmed absolutely the rumours of the company's human experimentation. Although the folder was incomplete and fragmented and encrypted to an extremely high degree, the hacker was able to pry some information from it.

Project VIROSYNTHIA was partially detailed within the protected folder, which was apparently the refinement of the retrovirus XV-293R, codenamed "Enlightenment," through human and animal experimentation. The hacker was able to obtain little else before the database's security shut her out.

Beyond cryptic references to subjects recieving "Sacraments" and "Sin Manifestations," she obtained a list of names.

    Metatron.
    Sandalphon.
    Lucifer.
    Shamshel.
    Leliel.
    Samael.
    Saraqael.
    Raguel.
    Ramiel.
    Gabriel.
    Raphael.
    Michael.
    Uriel.

Naturally, the people of the world refused to believe in the veracity of the document. The rebels had proven they would do whatever was necessary to bring down CHOIR; the act was considered only the latest in a series of smears and attacks.

But some heads began to turn with the newfound knowledge.

Perhaps... perhaps the rebels were onto something...

GOVERNANCE

    ]1.[
All profiles are to be posted in this thread so that I may review them. This serves two purposes:

    1. Revision is more easily facilitated with this method;
    2. All players will become familiar with the standards expected for characters in a much more efficient manner.

I will not accept any profile that is sent in a private message; my Inbox is full enough as it is, and I dislike dealing with people in such a manner.

]2.[
I will not accept more than one character per player.

]3.[
Please keep in mind that while killing player characters and non-player characters is acceptable, permission must be obtained to kill another player character. Any non-player characters that have a close association with a player character (such as the character's relatives) may only be killed with permission from the player.

]4.[
There will be a simple battle system. It's very easy, so follow it if your characters get into fisticuffs.

]5.[
All font size must be in size 10 or 9. In the actual roleplaying thread, font colours are limited to black, dark red, dark blue, or dark green. Not everyone appreciates the fact that you can select some blinding colour for your font, so don't do it.

]6.[
If you will not follow the basics of spelling and grammar, go somewhere else. If you're terrible at spelling, put it through a spellchecking program; if you're terrible with grammar, ask for some help. If your posts are an abomination against the English language and you refuse to clean it up or ask for help, you will be asked to leave.

Here is the roleplay thread. While I'm not strict on your post styles in this thread, I'll not be as forgiving in the roleplay itself.

SALVATION

Please make use of the provided template to craft your character.

AEDIFICIUM
NAME:
AGE:
GENDER:
PERSONALITY:
APPEARANCE:

MEMORIA
HISTORY:
POSITION:
REASON:

EXTERNUS
OTHER:
PLAYER NAME:

Please keep in mind that all characters are normal people. There are no half-breeds, cyborgs, mages, anthropomorphic animals, vampires, zombies, lycanthropes, mutants, or anything which is not a purely and one-hundred percent normal human. Any character that is not human will be rejected.

Names are to include a first and last, ages are to be reasonable, and genders do not have to be restricted to male and female.

I want two paragraphs at minimum for both personality and appearance, and three paragraphs at minimum for history. Pictures will not be accepted as either subsitute or addition to the character's physical description.

The "Position" field is to detail your character's exact relationship with CHOIR Corp., whether that be an outsider, accountant, programmer, paramilitary member, or whatever.

The "Reason" field is to detail why your character is what it is in CHOIR's structure, and why it entered, left, or stayed.

The "Other" field is for whatever will not fit in the other fields.

Post this in the thread. If you would like to leave and finish the character a later time, you're free to do so. Any characters that do not meet with my approval may be edited until they are up to my standards.

MISCELLANEA

Battle System
The battle system is very easy: Just roll a ten-sided die with every post in the fight, and if the number is five or below, your character's hit misses; conversely, if the number is six or higher, your character's hit connects.

Number each post in the fight; the first player to initiate the fight labels their post "Number One", and the other player labels their post "Number Two," and it alternates from there, up to post "Number Sixteen." Please try to be realistic with your characters' abilities to deal and recieve damage, since not everybody will have a shotgun or KEVLAR vest.

For the sake of simplicity, fights will only be one-on-one. If a character is dealing with two or more opponents, each opponent will warrant their own fight, but of course, damage dealt by each opponent will be cumulative until the character gets a chance to heal. If your character is caught up in such a situation, please label each fight with a different colour to help keep things organized; I'll also be keeping an eye on battles like that, just to help things run smoothly.

A Note On Homophones
There are several homphones that I see abused even by those with a decent grasp on the English language; the most common ones that I've encountered are listed below, with a brief explanation of their usage.

Accept: "To include."
They would accept her.
Except: "To exclude."
"They were all let in, except her."

It's: Contraction of "it is."
"It's unfortunate that many people get this one wrong."
Its: Possessive form of "it."
"They would benefit from knowing its correct usage."

Their: Possessive in the third person, plural.
"Their food was stolen."
There: A point in space or time.
"Thankfully, it was over there."
They're: Contraction of "they are."
"They're going to go pick it up."

To: The basic verb of action.
"She's going to kill you."
Too: Intensifier.
"There was too much pie; and it sucked, too."
Two: Equivalent of numeral "2."
"There were two monsters."

You're: Contraction of "you are."
"You're not very bright, are you?"
Your: Possessive in the second person, singular or plural.
"All your base are belong to us."

AEDIFICIUM

NAME: Rhea Iris Pittson
AGE: 18
GENDER: female
PERSONALITY: A rather quiet individual, Rhea has grown up to be somewhat of an introvert. Due to the fact that she does not have much interaction at home (where she spends most of her time), she has become accustomed to entertaining herself. She is very ethical, and the slightest lie bothers her to no end. She cares a lot for people and is constantly hoping her parents will find time in their busy lives and eat dinner with her. As an avid reader, Rhea's day is not complete unless she lays her hands on a book.

Although she is very independent, Rhea constantly yearns for human companionship. She is very easily swayed by words and may be what some call naive. Due to her taciturn demeanor, her classmates label her as a slow, stupid girl. However, this is not the case. She is very observant and often picks up on things that others disregard - having been trained to pick up on her parent's wellbeing and emotions through small clues since they never go out of their way to make conversations with her. It is often hard for her to make decisions because she sympathizes too easily with people. Rhea is also very responsible and a very diligent student.
APPEARANCE: Upon first seeing Rhea, many comment on her weight. Far too skinny for her height, for she stands at 5'6'', Rhea looks as though she could stand to gain ten or so pounds. Her long wispy blonde hair, complete with bangs, manage to make her look like a scarecrow. However, the feature that most people compliment are Rhea's eyes; they are a shade of clear blue, and are rather big, leading most people to interpret her facial expression as that of a vacant, dull countenance.

She has a rather elegant facial structure, and although Rhea does not like to admit it, she is far from ugly. However, she could stand to gain weight and flesh out her thin cheeks, among several other things. While Rhea harbors the potential to be "pretty," she lacks the desire and motivation for such a goal. Due to her plain appearance (as well as behavior), Rhea is quite the wallflower - people rarely notice her presence. And if they do, they don't seem to care. She has obediently followed her father's mantra of "women should be seen and not heard," only willing to voice her opinions out of necessity. Shying away from anything athletic, Rhea is rather weak and can barely open a jar of tomato sauce.

She dresses rather well, for her parents have given her a more than adequate allowance. She usually opts for skirts and dresses, avoiding pants whenever possible for her father dislikes it. Rhea prefers to dress in shades of black and white, having a liking for the overall image it gives off. She often wears a black headband in her hair, and occasionally wears silver jewelry.

MEMORIA

HISTORY: Born into a family where both her parents worked for CHOIR, Rhea has an immense dislike against the company which stole her parents. When she was first born, her mother had taken great interest in her. There is no certainty to whether this piece of information is factual or merely a desperate wish on Rhea's part. The pictures of her childhood all seemed rather empty and lonely to her. The Pittsons had obviously generated some sort of excitement for their daughter upon her birth, for they had decorated the room extravagantly - with pink themed wallpaper and a matching crib set to boot.

But, around her sixth birthday, the Pittsons fell upon hard times. Her father had been laid off and since Mrs. Pittson was a homemaker, money had been tight for a few months - until Mr. Pittson was given a lucrative offer at CHOIR. He eagerly accepted the job and soon, the Pittsons were rolling in cash. A few months later Mrs. Pittson was offered a job, which she also eagerly agreed to.

As far as her memory can reach, Rhea cannot remember a time when her parents were particularly doting or loving. Over the years Rhea has found several ways of staving off her boredom: reading, drawing, and teaching herself how to play the piano. Mrs. Pittson had once mentioned at dinner that she loved the piano, and spoke rather admiringly about a famous composer. Rhea took the initiative and bought herself a rather expensive piano, hoping to win herself over with her mother. A few days after her purchase, Mrs. Pittson remarked that Rhea was to be in charge of keeping the new piano clean, for she had bought it. Rhea still diligently teaches herself how to play, practicing every day. She knows it to be a vain wish, but deep down she hopes that one day Mrs. Pittson may notice her musical inclinations for the piano.

Reading the newspaper one day at breakfast, her father had complained about the number of women who were getting rounder and rounder every year. Rhea had taken this to heart and asked her parents for permission to join the track team to avoid becoming a "jiggly load of fat," as her father had so eloquently put it. Her father had angrily denied her permission, stating that no daughter of his was going to go for a sport, acting in such an unladylike manner. And so, Rhea has taken care to remain as fragile as possible. Later on, Rhea learned that it had been worded to affront her mother, who is a rather healthy and large woman. However, the words exchanged between husband and wife are far and few - making it difficult for Rhea to pick up on the clues of her parents' enmity towards each other, a concept she has long since subconsciously trained herself to ignore.

Rhea is currently a senior in high school and living a normal, peaceful life.
POSITION: She is the daughter of Doug Pittson (programmer at CHOIR) and Leah Pittson (accountant at CHOIR). Rhea has no actual connection with CHOIR.
REASON: Her parents have been working at CHOIR ever since Rhea was a child.

EXTERNUS

OTHER: Rhea has a dog, which she bought for herself on her 12th birthday.
PLAYER NAME: juniper rose blossom

I hope this is okay. whee

Alright, first profile!

On the whole, it's pretty good; I'm pleased with it. Your ability to write is nice and developed, you've only got one noticeable typo, and the character obviously has some thought put into it. The history and personality are rather nicely done, and I'm eager to see how you play her.

I've only got one little problem: the "pretty" thing. It's a personal nitpick of mine because I've run across some rather poor characters being self-described gods of beauty, but I think that the rest of the physical description very much overshadows whatever problem I may have with that.

Congratulations, your character is the first to be accepted.

AEDIFICIUM

NAME: Gateau FleurDeLune Beaumont (Gat-oh Floo-er Deh Loon Bew-mohn)
AGE: 20
GENDER: Female
PERSONALITY: With the amount of freedom she had as a child it is no mystery that she should end up as carefree and blunt as she did. Gateau can find pleasure in the simplest of things. Loud and independent, she makes her own way in the world, and is content to go with the flow, rebelling only when it goes against her loose sense of morals or Three Rules. She enjoys a large amount of good-natured ribbing and gives as good as she gets. Although crossing Gateau isn't something that should even be considered, when roused, her French temper can kill, and she can carry a grudge a lifetime.
APPEARANCE: Despite her obvious French heritage, it would take a heavy use of imagination to perceive Gateau as a beautiful woman. She is tall at an even two metres, bow-legged with larger-than-average feet, wide hips, and knobby hands. Her face is almost Rom in appearance with a prominent nose, dark eyes and unruly black hair. Coupled with her healthily tanned skin (from gardening), and loose-fitting, bright (almost garishly so) and mismatching clothes, she quite resembles a hippie from the 1960's.

MEMORIA

HISTORY:Born in a French commune to self-named Amour Petale and Jean-Marie Beaumont, and named after Amour's favourite things, Gateau grew up well-educated by her father and yet surrounded by anarchy. When she was fifteen years old, the commune began to die out, literally. It was suspected that CHOIR had taken the initiative and started to eliminate rather than convert the community. When Jean-Marie 'disappeared', Amour when under a drastic change, conforming into society, pretending every little detail of normalcy during the day while maintaining a covert contact with the rebel group to get back at those who took her lover. It was in these three years that Gateau set the rules to her life.
1)If anyone ever asks for help, it must be given.
2)Change will happen, survive.
3)If there is no second option, fight back.
After living in a constant state of paranioa with her mother and after several close calls, a final confrontation with the enemy left her mother dead and her hands bloodied. Without obtaining her high school diploma, Gateau moved to America to begin afresh. She learned english and started a bakery/flower shop; "Cake's Pretties" Since then, business has been going well, and the young Frenchwoman has regained her carefree personality.
POSITION: Florist/Baker. If she had to choose a side beside her own, she would be a rebel.
REASON: Escaping her past.
