ACT I: nigredo
Scene I: Gathering

It was busy in New York, like always. The air was humid, hot; even though the skyscrapers keot the sun from hitting the streets directly, they provided no protection against the July heat. People were trying their best to stay inside, to keep cool and relaxed.

An old woman was standing on her apartment's balcony, shaking out rugs and hanging clothes up to dry. It was a routine day for her; indeed, for everybody.

But all great movements have an opening act, a catalyst for events to come. The final fight against CHOIR was to be no different.

The old woman pulled a shirt off of her line before shaking and folding it. She saw something move out of the corner of her eye, and she turned to see a paramilitary enforcer leaning out of a window, sniper rifle pointing down at something. She followed the gun's angle to the ground below...

Panic was beginning to envelop the streets as grotesque wreck of a human being half-stumbled, half-ran through them. Its right arm, hidesouly enlarged and deformed, dragged along the building next to it, gouging the stone with its great claws. An enforcer jumped in the creature's way only to be batted aside like a rag doll.

The thing's head suddenly exploded, and it fell to the ground with a thud.

Tolin sat at his desk in his small apartment room. He sifted through his emails. Most of it was work related, replies to reports and such. There was quite a bit of junk mail as well. His spam blocker was old and out of date, but then again there were reasons for that. Sifting through his mail he noticed one of those reasons.

It was difficult to notice, but there it was. Under the heading “Check your Debit with three Easy steps”. Nothing special. Except that it held a code. Tolin opened it. Inside was a streaming video feed. It was from New York. Tolin’s eyes widened at what he saw. He quickly read and erased the rest of the message, then deleted any logs of it on his computer. You couldn’t be too careful. Of course if anyone had reason to take the computer apart the would find it.

Tolin wondered how many days of vacation he had. He didn’t really use it much.

Tobias sat in his office reading through the countless applications for legal assistance and other bits of minutinae that made up his daily life. Scanning the applications quickly he divided them into 4 piles - those that would be refused, those that needed further inspection, those he would would deal with personally and those that his juniors could handle.
Really someone else should have been sorting through all this but Tobias had never trusted anyone else to do the job properly, after nearly 10 years within the CHOIR group he knew the rules regarding the granting of legal assistance to employees better than most. Yes it felt bad to deny assistance to a parent whose child had been injured by another person's carelessness simply because they hadn't been an employee long enough, but in those cases he had made it clear that the rejection letter was to contain information about where other help could be obtained. Leaning over he touched the intercom button. "Clare, could you get me another cup of tea, earl grey, one sugar? Thank you."
"Right away Mr Blake." Came the slightly tinny reply.

A wispy, delicate frame of a girl could be seen on the balcony of the apartment. Long blonde hair whipped across her face as the wind swept past. Rather high up, a rather vivid view of the landscape could be seen with numerous skyscrapers dotting the horizon. Depending on a person's objective point of view, this view could be labeled as either pleasant or irritating.

The girl was gazing out into the distance and watching the flurry of activity within the city. She seemed to neither enjoy nor take displeasure from what she saw. It was July and to consider it as a hot day would be an understatement. When the sun began to slowly migrate across the sky and started to shine fiercely upon the balcony, the stick of a girl slid back in response, protecting herself in the shadows. Eventually, when the air became rather suffocating - albeit it was cooler at a higher altitude - she withdrew back into the apartment.

In the background, the television was on and news headlines were being read aloud by the usual reporters. She tuned out the sound, leaving the screen and sound on only to fill the empty silence in the house. A rather large dog bounded out of one of the rooms as it heard the sound of its bowl being filled, wagging its tail happily as the girl placed its meal on the ground.

All in all, it was a normal summer afternoon, and Rhea retired to her room to read a book that had recently come out.

A young man stepped off the High school campus, wearing a long black coat, and a monkey riding on his shoulders, his eyes were cyan, with a small necklace hanging off his neck. Something about him sent people moving away from him, in any direction but just away. The monkey looked like a small chimp, it had Dark fur, and just a few burn marks.

He looked around starring at the people, what comfort could be found in ignorance was his thought as he starred after a small group of jocks. The day was warm, and slightly sticky making his hair cling to his neck just a tad. stepping out, he followed the paths back to the lab.

Noticed was a male, about average height and build, completely forgettable, following the youth. As the youth stepped off the main street, he slid his hands into his pockets, and stepped into a small building, the man stepped into the area, not knowing where the youth ha gone, and continued on his way.

The youth entered a pass-key, and stepped into the lab, with a smile on his face.

Somewhere in New York, in a chamber far beneath the streets, three figures stood in coloured beams of light. They were arguing.

The feminine form standing in the indigo column spat, "You were entrusted with this city--no, almost half of a continent--and you allowed this to happen? The schedule has been advanced prematurely to account for this. You threaten everything!"

The masculine form in the red column replied in a relaxed, lazy voice: "We have it under control. One of the dummies has been set up. Only one of those rebel hackers could trace it back. Nobody believes them."

"That's right, we've misplaced the blame, leaked false info to the press, begun the clean-up, have a place to dump the bodies!" The other masculine form that stood in the grey light had spoken, his speech coming rapidfire and high-pitched. "Not to worry, none of them let out!"

"I hope, for your sake, that the situation has indeed be defused." The indigo light went out, shortly followed by the red and grey lights.

For anyone paying attention to the news, or even the streets, things seemed to be breaking down in New York. Reports and rumours were flying out. "Another creature has been spotted in Central Park! There have been five confirmed creatures so far; please, everyone, stay inside your homes and allow the enforcers to take care of things!"

Suddenly Tobias' computer screen flashed up and an annoyingly chirpy female voice informed him he had a message requiring his urgent attention. Sighing he laid down the paperwork and opened the message.

"Tobias,
I've just been informed that there's a conference in New York in 3 days that I am required to attend but, due to personal commitments, I am unable to go. After myself you're probably the most qualified to attend from the UK offices so I'd appreciate it if you could go in my place. I don't know exactly what the conference is about but it's definately important and it's certainly not one of the regular ones. Let me know ASAP if you can go.
Many thanks,
John Blood."

Groaning inwardly Tobias pulled his diary closer and flicked through the pages praying that he had some forgotten appointment that would mean he didn't have to trek all the way to New York. The blank pages stared back at him almost accusingly. Returning to the computer screen he quickly responded.

John,
Would be a pleasure to attend. Hope the personal circumstances aren't too dire. I'll speak to you when I get back and let you know what happened.
Regards,
Tobias Blake.

leaning over to the intercom he asked Clara to book his flights before returning to his paperwork.
