The Abridged Version
The world of Dragon-Bound is a low technology (medieval) one where magic is specific to the race of the wielder. Magic for the humans is based on a strict set of rules that require certain rituals, words, and a great deal of training. Dragon magic is based on impulse, will, and feeling. The two are incompatible as dragons find human magic too ‘thinky’ and humans find dragon magic too unpredictable. Dragons sometimes divide magic up into elements but this is not necessary.
Dragons congregate in widespread clans that cover a vast expanse of territory so as not to deplete the wildlife population. Each clan is led by the strongest dragon – be it by magic, physical strength, or intelligence. Every few years or so the various clans will meet to discuss the going-ons of their people. They are found in all climates and areas but tend to stick to the northern and eastern parts of the continent as few humans venture there, knowing it to be dragon territory. The human nations reside in the middle of the continent and on the west coast. Humans live under mostly monarchy systems, and there are many kingdoms with their own difficulties and alliances. The territory and courts of the Fae are south of the Eastern Forest and west of the desert but cannot be found by normal means.
Dragon-bound humans share in their master’s thoughts, strength, and magic - if the dragon allows it. In return, their movements and emotions are subject to their master’s orders if the dragon chooses to do so. For the most part, dragons and bound humans work together in cooperation, a dragon taking on some of the human’s qualities and the human taking on some aspects of the dragon’s personality. A dragon can also abuse the bond and turn the human into a virtual puppet. This can sometimes cause violence among individual dragons or even between clans as each fights for what they believe the humans deserve. Dragons have made some accommodations to their bound humans by creating saddles for them to ride in and even creating an order of knights that both the dragons and humans can aspire to. These knights live in the northern mountains and are called upon by both humans and dragons to aid against injustice.
