(( Summary as too much time has passed to finish this in the proper mindset: ))

Zul peruses the fel essences lined up in the Lab, viewing them all as future friends and foes that haven't even had the chance to live yet, and might never get that chance. It upsets him and he begins to think Kyou is being unfair to just keep them all locked up and not give them to people who would give them good homes. He decides to take matters into his own hands and, grabbing Forceful Mistletoe, sets out to write a letter to Anita Blake.

█║ SOLO: What Better Place Than Here?
      █║ INVOLVED: Zul
█║ SYNOPS: Zul sends Game Lady Anita a Fel Essence.

To Anita
A package arrives at your work address in an oblong box that declares it was once used to house a lamp, or so the pictures on the side would lead one to believe. There's a copious amount of tape around the purple and white printed box, with a note card neatly in the middle of all sides, each reading the same thing in rather striking flowing script: Game Lady Anita, followed by the address to the store.

Beyond the tangle of tape and within the lampy confines, you would find...bags of marshmallows? And...peanuts? Pawing through the mess, you come across random soft items, including napkins, stuffing (perhaps borrowed from some hapless pillow), cotton swabs, slightly stale bread and lesser items like torn kleenex and flower petals. Buried in the mess are four pieces of styrofoam that nestle something snugly between two pieces of them; one is larger, about as wide as the lamp box and as tall as a dictionary, the other slender like an incense case. Affixed upon the larger is a note, written in the same scroll work hand as the address cards.

The Note
Game Lady Anita,

Precious things require precious care.

I trust you.

- Zul

Within the pieces of styrofoam, lay the two most curious objects, though neither are marked: a large bottle with a green, jagged-patterned cloth around the neck and a vial of what appears to be mistletoe...

█║ SOLO: Who Let the Dog Out? [Follow Up: Life As a Puppy: Day 1]
      █║ INVOLVED: Zul
█║ SYNOPS: Zul witnesses Lucia's odd behavior.

He heard the yells first. Zul didn't think much of the first, but the second and third certainly caught the demon's attention. Alex had asked him to pick up dinner since she'd been behind on finishing some work with the virus reports, and the dutiful Frei had not minded getting out of those sterile walls and out into the fading sunshine. He'd picked up exactly what she'd ordered - kung pao beef, easy on the greens, at the Main Chow Mein chinese place - and was en route to returning to the Lab when he passed the dog park. Usually, he paid it no mind unless one of the pups wanted to come and be social, but that wasn't the case this time.

The fourth shout made the Frei pause all together, staring out over the grassy slopes with minute curiosity. There was rarely a disturbance in this nice part of town, and with an odd feeling of amusement, the demon flit his bone-framed wings and floated up the side of the hill that overlooked the dog park. Zul hummed quietly to himself as his blue eyes adjusted to the bright lights that were beginning to turn on in the vicinity, the sun almost cradled in the break of trees. When he caught sight of the perpetrator, he felt his arms stiffen and his wings seize up, his spine locking in place.

"Lucia?" he murmured through tightly pressed lips, his voice barely a whisper in the night. They were all far enough that they'd not be able to hear him unless he yelled, and he was mostly certain he couldn't be seen from his vantage point. Disbelieving eyes watched the Kitten lift her head from the posterior of a dog, give a look around the area, and float off towards the main streets beyond. The humans - though he couldn't see their faces clearly - sounded disgruntled and upset. What the hell had she been doing to their dogs?

He glanced down to the bag still held by his loosely curled fingers before looking back to the retreating form of the Kitten. For now, he decided he'd give her the benefit of the doubt. Maybe his angle had been bad? Slightly unsettled by what he thought he'd seen, Zul shook his head and turned to float back down the hill and back onto the sidewalk. Lucia would be okay, he was sure of it. His hungry Guardian, however, would not. He would have to check on the Kitten at some later time...just to make sure.

      █║ SOLO: Brand New Day
      █║ INVOLVED: Alex, Neil, Zul
█║ SYNOPS: Zul meets Neil and is introduced to glass blowing.

The two arrived at a modest looking building, recently refurbished and looking a bit more new than the rest of the stores on that particular street in Durem; an ornate sign that seemed to be crafted out of glass hung against a cheerful purple backdrop, colored lights filtering through the clear material to give it a rather enigmatic appearance. The sign proclaimed "Erchless" in flowing glass script.

"Erchless?" the demon pronounced the word as it looked, tilting his head to the side in question as he looked at his woman.

Alex smiled, but it was the same distant one she'd worn since they found Dayo and the ice rose three days ago. "It's an Irish estate, beautiful at that," the woman explained easily, her gaze flickering upwards to the sign. Her face was momentarily bathed in a rich green from the colorful display, making her eyes stand out despite the similar color. She extended a hand to tug the door to the shop open despite the CLOSED sign that was visible through the panes. "It means 'air glass' in Gaelic."

Zul floated in first, immediately assaulted by a smell that was rather unfamiliar to him. It reminded him of a sun-warmed rock, but he didn't have much time to think about it, his wide blue eyes turning over the contents of the shop. The building itself was rather small in the portion they were in - a dozen people would make it uncomfortably crowded - but judging by what was on display, it wasn't the type of business to generate a large crowd. Windows...windows everywhere. Most were stained glass, something the Frei had never seen up close, floating to one that depicted an ornate cross. There were others with engravings and embossing on them, some framed, some smooth edged and some even ingrained with pebbles and crystals. What type of place was this?

"'s alsah thought t' be 'omage t'a water day-tea," came a thick accented reply from beyond the counter. The room was dimly lit enough that the demon had to squint, but he couldn't see the person there. Instead, he looked to Alex and quietly mouthed, 'day tea?'

She came up beside him and whispered, "Deity," before he witnessed the most spectacular thing he'd seen in three days; a full, happy grin blossomed on her face, cutting the worry and tiredness that etched around her eyes and skimming five years off her appearance. Zul watched as the woman gave a small squeal of joy, bounding through the narrow room and leaping onto who he assumed was the source of the strange voice they'd just heard. "It's been too long!" he heard his woman cry out to whomever was buried in her embrace, floating a little ways behind her to try and get a peek. "I can't believe you're here! Ooooh, I missed you!" The man was squeezed, kissed soundly and patted on the cheek before Alex moved off and away from the man, extending a hand to the Frei. "This is Zul."

And before Zul was the most beautiful human male he'd ever laid eyes on. The Frei couldn't help but stare, a little caught off guard, making him somewhat defensive; his smile was small and uncertain, blue eyes completely focused on the man in question. He was taller than Alex but shorter than Brad, broad of shoulder and trim of build, visible even beneath the wine red button-up shirt he wore over blue jeans and brown boots. The sleeves were rolled up and over his forearms, showing a good deal of strength in the sun-kissed limbs, though his hands were a bit scarred like his woman's, albeit more obviously so. The top few buttons were undone, the collar open and sporting the black hair that was in a ponytail. The Frei floated closer and amended his impression as the light caught the locks; it was, in fact, the darkest red he'd ever seen, the tips curved over the man's shoulder just beneath his collar bone. Bangs arched and framed his sharp, raised eyebrows, which lifted over muted grey eyes. His face was sharp, angular, definitely foreign; he was smiling at the demon, and he didn't realize he was staring.

He realized, as he stared, that if Rivener was human, he might look something like the man he was looking at. The notion made Zul relax, feeling a little less withdrawn now that he had understood why he thought the other was attractive - he reminded him somewhat of his Sigel. His thoughts were derailed as he noticed the man glance towards Alex, then look back to him in a slightly more quizzical but no less friendly manner. "Zuel, is it? Nice t'meet yah, lad, I'm Neil," he introduced himself in that deliciously different way, drawing Zul out from behind the displays and into the light. The man named Neil suddenly looked startled, his grey eyes dropping down and then back up, shock obvious in his eyes. The demon was a little surprised himself to find that there was nothing else behind that expression - no fear, no awe, just blatant surprise.

"Nice to meet you, Neil," Zul finally found his voice, extending a hand to the man. "Why do you talk like that? It sounds so nice." His blue eyes shimmered beneath the setting-light, casting shadows just so over his own defined features.

He watched Neil stare for a few more heartbeats before he felt his hand being taken; the man's own hands were somewhat rough, the handshake firm. Zul noticed Alex giving him a strange look before he realized he'd just shaken the other's hand rather than his standard greeting of a bow. He'd only done that before with Brad, and again, he found himself feeling a little off. "Well, Zuel, yeh've just given me th' 'eartattack of th'centry," Neil's lips flickered back into a smile, grounding the Frei a little more, "or shald I gaiv that 'onor te th' lass 'ere? Ally, ye cald 'ave warned me."

"I wanted to see your face," his woman replied, and he could hear the grin in her voice.

Neil uttered a grunt at Alex before again looking at Zul, retaining his smile. There was simple ease in his expression, and while the demon got the impression that the man was younger than his woman, there was something older and almost worn about Neil. "And te'ansar ye'r question lad, I be from Erin - th'land ah Ireland. 'ave Ally an' Bear nae said a thing ah'v it?"

Zul's face lit at the mention of the older Italian. "You call him Bear too?" the demon quipped, utterly taken with the strange dialect. "No, they haven't told me anything of Ire-land." Blue eyes flicked briefly to Alex, but she was too busy smiling in that sweet manner at Neil to notice, though it didn't change his reproachful expression. "They don't even speak much about where they came from."

"An' f'that, I'm nae sup'd in the least," the Irishman chuckled, crossing his arms over his broad chest. "We'll 'ave plenty ah'time te speak for it, aye? 'ow many days d'ye think, lass?" he posed the vague question to Alex, though his attention remained on the Frei.

He was quite aware that he was missing something, looking between the humans with a perplexed but wistful expression. Zul wasn't entirely sure what Neil was saying, but he was hanging on every oddly spoken word. "Day? Time?" he repeated, feeling a bit like his woman and her tendency to reiterate the obvious.

She moved to the demon's side, slipping an arm around his bare shoulders. "I want to get you out of the Lab for a bit, while we...deal with what's going on," she explained, her tone still jovial though her eyes lost a bit of their light, "and Neil here graciously agreed to let you help him part time in the shop. What do you say?"

Quite frankly, the demon wanted to give Neil a cookbook and ask him to read out of it so he could listen to that accent of his. The option to work with the guy was almost a no-brainer in the Frei's enthusiasm, but there was one small thing. "What...do you do, Neil?" he inquired, finally tearing his eyes away from the two humans to look back around the shop. "Do you make windows?"

The laughter that returned his question made his attention immediately return to the Irishman. It was a rich sound, and judging by the sudden expression on Alex's face, it wasn't one often made. "I'ma gaffer, lad," Neil grinned lop-sidedly at the Frei. "I work with glass, but aye, windas be th'mehjarity of me work. Now, I cannae jes teach ye 'ow t'mold 'em, 'fore ye get a-cited there." He uncrossed his arms and lifted his hands in a 'wait' motion, though Zul hadn't done so much as bat an eyelash. "Ally 'ere told me 'bout ye'r unique, ah, powers. I thought she war pullin' me leg, but I know bettar now, aye. I can give ye a method t'release 'em some."

"You can use it without hurting anyone or anything, to a degree," Alex explained at his side, arm still looped around his shoulders. "He'll teach you how to focus it. Is that okay?"

"Is that okay?" Zul repeated again. If he wasn't so beside himself with surprise and sheer excitement, he would have berated himself for sounding so insipid. "That's...why didn't you say so sooner?" The Frei turned and regarded his woman with an accusing look. "I wouldn't have been so...you know, about..."

Alex smiled in a quiet way that said she understood. The Irishman didn't understand in the least, though, apparent by the way one brow lifted and the other curved down over his steely gaze, but he didn't say anything about it one way or another. Instead, he gave a single nod and another winning smile. "I'm openin' th'eighth a next month. 'ow 'bout ye come by on th'third? I'll give ye a taur of th'back. I'm still settin' up."

Zul and Alex both agreed to the date, promising to see him in the morning of the third. Just like that, the demon found himself with a part-time job and was none the wiser for the responsibility being handed to him.

Summary
After being attacked by Lucia, Josh brings Lulu in for medical treatment.
PostPosted: Mon Feb 08, 2010 6:20 pm

█║ SOLO: Bigger Than My Body [Follow Up: Save the Best For Last]
      █║ INVOLVED: Alex
█║ SYNOPS: After meeting with Laz, Alex copes with the loss of Ekundayo and Lucretia.

While Zul was off on his first day of 'work,' Alex stood next to the yet lifeless body of Ekundayo.

The woman bit the inside of her cheek, looking down at the sleeping Raevan. Her expression was peaceful enough but the zoologist couldn't help but note that it seemed that the femme was looking more as though she wasn't so distressed and lost for a change. Alex sighed to herself, extending her fingers to lightly touch the hair that was beginning to get its color and vitality back, soft as feathers. She wondered if the Eagle would ever dream again, if she'd ever have another full day of joy and build memories with someone who loved her. Would she be able to forget Mouse? Would she be able to forgive them all for doing this to her?

The Italian drew in a shaky breath, carefully drawing a stool up next to the comatose Frei and taking a seat, staring bleary-eyed at the unmoving form. Her elbows rested on her thighs, and eventually, her face slid into her hands, her heart sinking. If I'd realized sooner, her mind whispered with lament, if I'd just known Zul was sick sooner...you wouldn't be here, Dayo. Had Alex realized her charge's condition even a little sooner, she might have been able to spare the Eagle running into him. She might have been able to help Zul sooner. Lucretia wouldn't be gone, either...if only she'd had more presence of mind...

She knew she shouldn't be blaming herself, but it happened. Maybe nothing would have changed and it was good it was Zul that found her and not Rivener or someone else - if not for her memory of who Zul had run into, Dayo might have died. Alex's green eyes opened a little, staring into her scarred palms, her breath sounding loud in the cup of her hands. She knew she couldn't have controlled the outcome of the fel virus, but she still felt burdened with guilt that she hadn't done more. Zul was her life right now - there wasn't anything she wouldn't do for him and his well being. The truth could be said for any of the Raevans, whom she felt responsible for by extension of her affiliation to the Lab. Even those she hadn't met, such as Gage and Lucretia herself...they all left an impact on her, their loss keenly felt.

Drawing in a shaky breath, she exhaled slowly and forced herself to stand, lowering her hands to look at the sleeping Eagle. Her fingers reached forward and rested over the female's claws, squeezing the luke-warm digits. She couldn't keep looking back or she was going to be doomed to repeat her mistakes, and Alex knew she'd never, ever forgive herself if she inflicted such misfortune and upset upon her demon. Dayo was a friend to Zul; she'd do them both a great disservice if she didn't keep moving forward. She would monitor Dayo, the new Raevan born of Lucretia's remains and the Frei that would be born of the virus that had caused all this damage. I wont be afraid, she promised them all silently. Alex would do her best to stand tall and usher them all into a life that was free of pain or absence of understanding. It was the least she could do.

It's not about me, though, she thought as she smiled tightly at the Eagle, lifting her hand to touch the female's cheek before turning to leave the room. Never has been. And goodness willing, it would always be that way.

(( Summary as too much time has passed to finish this in the proper mindset: ))

While working and discussing life, Zul asks Neil why he works such long hours, which Neil responds he doesn't have a family to go home to. Zul finds this perplexing. After he accidentally puts too-hot glass into water, a giant gale of steam makes his eyes sting; after he 'douses' the hurt with his own power, he catches a glimpse of a woman holding a baby, standing near Neil. The problem is, there's no one there. Later that night, at home, Zul asks Alex about Neil, in which she reveals the sad truth: he had lost his wife and unborn son during childbirth. Surprised, Zul tries to recreate what happened at the Erchless, a delicate summoning of his power, noting that there is a rather large and imposing figure that is hanging around Alex. He doesn't tell her and speculates who it is.
