It started out as any normal day, though Alex really should have known better to discount such good omens by now. It was peaceful, for all intents and purposes: the morning had been lovely and fair, the traffic mild, even lunch had been a calm reprieve from the tedium of paperwork. It wasn't like she had each and every day to sit around and do nothing, what with the mounds of filing and form-filling that needed to be done to play catch-up on all the Raevans and the recent activity. While the Italian was grateful for the work, she would have just as much appreciated a calm in that storm of paper cuts and dried ink.

In her office, the woman's long fingers tapped audibly on her flat keyboard, green eyes focused at the dark text that flit across her screen in tandem with the pace of her typing. A soft bit of music played in the background, barely audible from her computer's speakers to fill in the white noise of a quiet day.

Josh’s afternoon has started out equally uneventful. Nevertheless, his calm and pleasant day had come to a screeching halt when LuLu had been bludgeoned by Lucia. The cat frei has struck like an unexpected strike of lightning, sudden yet brutal. Unbeknownst to the teen, by allowing LuLu to play outside he was sending her into danger much like sending a lamb to slaughter. However, there was no way he could have foresaw this and prevented the attack. Now, Josh could only pray that LuLu’s outcome would be less bleak. His day had certainly taken a turn for the worst in just a few short hours. There was only one place that could offer sanctuary to the injured frei now.

Josh barreled towards the glass doors of Lab 305.

As he looked down at the limp body in his arms dread filled him to his very core. The unconscious raevan sagged and swayed as the boy bolted across the Lab’s well maintained lawn. He probably trampled over a “keep off the grass” sign in his haste. Josh practically kicked in the door of the Lab when he finally reached it. He was not sure who was working that day, but he knew they would be able to give some assistance. He called out into the lobby, “HELP!!! LULU IS INJURED!”

The boy cradled her head to his chest. LuLu’s soft blond ears were slumped over in her face, unresponsive. Her head lulled forward without any resistance. It appeared as if the rabbit was in a deep sleep, one that was probably the work of a severe concussion.

She couldn't have possibly heard the doors open from her office, but the shout was unmistakable. The words carried in a strange sort of slow motion often reserved for movies; Alex was on her feet after the first word, but those that came thereafter seemed to linger in the air far too long. The last word had barely trailed off into nothing before her door swung open hard enough to slam the knob into the opposite wall. Only as she crested around the edge of the hall and jogged towards Josh did she realize she hadn't said a word in response, hadn't had time to think of what to say, her blood pounding loud and high in her ears. Adrenaline carried her, and goodness willing, it wouldn't fail her until LuLu was safe.

"Josh?" she inquired sharply at the teen's side, putting a hand on his shoulder and quickly looking over the Frei. A head injury, her skin didn't seem to have the rich sun-kissed luster that she was familiar with, unresponsive -- "Come with me, quick -- she's lost too much blood for her size and I don't want to jostle her out of your arms." The Italian was usually known to be friendly, caring, but most didn't get to see her under duress. She was calm, cooler than she would have cared to admit and calculating a quick resolution in the safest means possible. Admittedly, she didn't have much of a damn clue how to treat a Raevan, but this type of trauma was something she had experience with.

Leading the way to the first door on the left side of the hallway, she pressed her palm against the still swinging door to keep it open, ushering Josh through and motioning to the gurney on the right half of her office. "Put Lu there and tell me what you know," she said briskly, pushing beyond the teen to the large sink to wash her hands up to her elbows. The last thing she wanted to do was endanger LuLu further.

Josh seemed just as breathless and manic as Alex. However, the Italian quickly found her niche and acclimated herself into a calm precision. Perhaps it was a difference of age, maturity, or upbringing that caused their opposing response. Nonetheless, the teen found himself still floundering as he cradled the limp body in his arms. He finally had a person to focus his angst on and it seemed as if all his pent of stress was hell bent on coming out in one big explosion. His voice trembled as he fought to speak coherently, "B-blood?!" He looked down at at the rabbit in his arms. Had he already forgotten? If he had, he was quickly reminded of the thick, red liquid oozing from the frei's head wound. Said liquid was already bathing his forearm a ghastly shade of coagulated crimson.

Josh followed after Alex with haste. He did as instructed and set the girl down on the crisp, white sheets of the rolling bed. The boy was gentle in placing her and even more careful in lulling her head back on the single pillow. Already, a few speckles of blood were dotting wrinkles of the fabric. It only served to unnerve LuLu's guardian even more. He never thought one half-body could hold so much fluid. Josh tried to reassure himself that was just how head injuries were supposed to look. LuLu would surely be okay in the end.

Right?

Josh looked up at Alex with hurt in his eyes, L-Lucia did this. LuLu was playing in the back yard alone. When I came to check on her Lucia was standing over her", He ran his fingers through his hair and then licked his parched lips, "Why would she hurt LuLu like this?"

She was quick to move, gathering gauze, stitching thread and creams to fight any infection. Putting those on a nearby tray, she also seized a bottle of rubbing alcohol and cotton balls, putting those next to what she already had. Not knowing what type of damage she'd be working with, she wanted to be prepared. As Alex began to put on her protective gloves, she managed to look fairly alarmed by Josh's words. "Lucia?" she repeated, not quite incredulous but surprised. Her mind immediately leaped to the virus, but she knew that was impossible: the 'cure' was a rather one-time deal, and a regression of the virus that was contained elsewhere seemed impossible.

"I have no idea, but we'll look into it -- I think Zul mentioned seeing her the other day." She walked as she talked, not wanting to waste time as she gently began to push LuLu's sunny hair back to find the source of the blood. "Said she was acting weird, like a dog. I didn't think much of it at the time..." But if I had, I might have been able to prevent this, she finished inwardly, pursing her lips. Now wasn't the time to take the blame! Finding the gash, she exhaled with only minor relief: the scalp was split, but it wasn't anything a few butterfly bandages couldn't fix. She wouldn't need stitches. "The good news is, head wounds bleed a lot, and the force was concussive. She'll be okay, Josh."

Looking up to the young man, she offered a small smile, hoping the Guardian would breathe again. "Why don't you wash up? I'm going to see if I can clean and bandage without shaving her hair, I do not want to be on LuLu's bad side if I can at all help it."

Josh eyed Alex's actions like a weary cat. His eyes darted back and forth while his body remained motionless. Breath caught in his throat, he watched the woman work. He followed after the Italian. "Like a dog? I would not have given that much though either Alex. I wonder what Zul could have meant." Blond bangs parted for the first time allowing all the damage cause by Lucia to be on display. The boy cringed as his frei's wound was revealed to him. However, just as quickly, his shoulder slumped with relief when he realized the gash was nowhere near as bad as he had anticipated. Indeed, head wounds were a lot of show and no real damage. The only thing that still alarmed his was the girl's unresponsiveness. He returned Alex's smile hoping it would give her just as much reassurance. He felt as though LuLu was now in good hands. "I think I will," he scrunched his nose at the blood smeared on his forearms, "It is just a concussion then? When do you think she will wake u-"

The rabbit stirred in the bed. Her eyes snapped open wide and alert like two polished marbles. Fluffy ears darted forward. She looked between both her guardian and Alex. Her gaze finally settled on the woman solidly. Her brow knitted in a mix confusion and horror. Her lips quivered as she spoke, "D-do.... do not shave me. No. I-I... like me with hair." The rabbit seemed firm in her statement despite the fact she was still a step or two away from full coherence. She seemed less concerned with the blood still dripping down her face and more with the false threat from a woman she had only met a few times prior. Her face took on a softer appearance, "Please." Of course, even in injury, a princess could not forget her manners.

"I'll have to see if I can't get him to clarify -- and get in contact with Yuurei, maybe." Alex was troubled by the two events. Though they didn't seem remotely related - acting like a dog was not bludgeoning another Raevan! - she couldn't help but feel something bad was going on. It always made her feel chilled to think something so lethal could be happening right under her nose. Shaking off the thoughts and casting Josh another reassuring smile, she nodded in confirmation. Before she could answer, however, the Rabbit stirred, immediately drawing her attention back to the Frei with a snap.

"Shh, you're in the Lab, LuLu," she murmured softly, hoping to keep her still and unafraid, "you're safe--" And yet, what was said was not at all what she had anticipated. Where am I?, maybe, or What happened?, but not...not that. Alex couldn't repress the touched smile that curved her lips, her brows drawn upwards as her heartstrings were pulled. "Oh sweetheart, I wont, I swear it. Please don't worry about that." Gently smoothing back LuLu's hair that wasn't near the wound so as not to hurt her, she leaned over and pressed a maternal kiss near one of her ears. "Zul would never forgive me," she added warmly, moving around from behind the Frei to stand at her side instead, letting herself be easily seen.

Glancing to Josh in a way that said she was also relieved, she again turned her eyes to LuLu. "Can you tell me exactly what happened, LuLu? I'm going to clean up your wound as much as I can and just use some butterfly bandages so you wont have a scar with stitches. I need you to stay awake though, so tell me if you can. And if not -- sing your favorite song for me." Pulling out a length of gauze, she wrapped it around her fingers and began to delicately clean around the split in her scalp. Speaking to Josh without turning her head, she added, "What does LuLu eat, Josh? If it's anything to be found in here, we could probably stand to get her something to help with the healing process."

"Lab?" LuLu rubbed the blur from her eyes and focused them on her surrounding once again. Sure enough, her senses were overcome by the sterile smell and blank walls. The scenery was familiar to her; nevertheless, the lab was very much a distant memory. She had not been in the facility since her birth. "Why?" She watched Alex hover near with a cautious stare. She was still unsure just why she was here and why this woman was tending to her. Thankfully, as lips gingerly touched her scalp, her fears melted away. The action reminded her of something her GramGram would have done. Relief washed over the rabbit due to the affectionate kiss, like an animal being lulled into a tranquil slumber. LuLu mouthed slowly, "Zuuuul... I miss him." The statement was aimed at no one in particular. It was more of a reflection.

LuLu looked down at the mention of a wound. Fluffy ears reared back in horror and an audible gulp came from the frei's throat. All she could see was her own blood drenching the sheets and her skin. She had seen her blood before. That was nothing new. However, she was alarmed that she could not recall why she was bleeding or where she was bleeding from. She looked up at Alex with pleading eyes hoping that the woman could provide answers rather than questions. LuLu was shocked to find that the human's questions where the same as her own. The rabbit wrung her hands nervously. Was she supposed to know the answers rather than Alex? Why couldn't she remember everything? The raevan responded shakily, "I can tell you. All I remember is Lucia wanted to play tag with me even though she sounded sick. And... a stick." Josh interrupted, "It looked like a police baton Alex. Lucia hit LuLu in the head with it." He knew the frei would not know what such a device was called. He patted the girl's shoulder encouraging her to continue her story. LuLu looked down at her fragile hands, cupping them into small fists within the bed sheet, "Then darkness."

Josh offered LuLu a sympathetic smile before he nodded to Alex. The rabbit eyed her guardian before her lips quirked weakly in response. She supposed her answer had been sufficient. She had given all the information she could recall. Though she was still a bit lost as to why she was being treated so tenderly, why she was now in the Lab, and why she was covered in blood. Her eyes suddenly felt heavier due to her exertion. The rabbit eased back against the bed to become more comfortable. Her arms were poised limply at her sides. She asked sleepily, "Lucia did this? She wanted to hurt me."

Josh replied to Alex matter of factly, "She feeds on creativity. Either you can start thinking up some jokes or I can go grab a pen and paper from the front desk and start doodling. I did not have enough time to bring a coloring book unfortunately." He ended his sentence with a small chuckle trying to lighten the mood now that all seemed to be well. He would not mind going to the front desk. It would give him a chance to take a detour towards the bathroom and scrub the blood from his knuckles. The boy began to walk towards the exit.

It hadn't occurred to the Italian that LuLu may not have realized where she was -- a little alarmed by the memory loss but it seemed that the Rabbit Frei was quickly getting her bearings again. Gently smoothing her hand over the sunny, blood-stained locks, Alex listened to what LuLu had to say with a warm expression. She knew this had to be utterly terrifying for the young Raevan, especially because there was no definite answer as to what was going on. "That's perfect, LuLu, thank you very much for being so brave." Offering another quiet smile, she added, "This might sting a little, but it'll numb the pain, I promise." Setting about to gently dab at the wound itself with some disinfectant and numbing agent, she freed one of her hands enough for the time being to take LuLu's hand. She wasn't sure if she was trying to comfort the Frei or herself.

"I'm afraid so, by Josh's account and your own. Lucia...may not be well. I will call her caretaker and see what I can find out, okay, LuLu? Right now, you just concentrate on getting better. You're my concern right now." Setting the bloodied swath of cotton aside, she looked over to Josh and laughed quietly in apology. "I'm afraid my jokes are bad at best, doodling may be our best options. There's a notepad and more pens than I know what to do with on my desk," Alex lifted her chin to indicate the furniture barely visible through a door on the opposite side of the rom, "we'll see what we can do."

Returning her attention to LuLu, she gave her hand a gentle squeeze, using her yet-working hand to pluck a q-tip off the tray and dab it in some artificial scabber. It would help for the Frei to not bleed excessively while she was being bandaged. "How do you feel, LuLu?" she asked as pleasantly as she could. "Are you hungry or sleepy or anything?"

The rabbit merely gave a soft hiss as the dampened swabs and cotton dabbed at the wound on her head. Her mind was still bleary and her muscled felt too weak to put up any resistance. Plus, it was clear Alex was trying to help. LuLu gently squeezed Alex's hand in her own. Her leaned her head back in the bed and she watched as Josh he left through the exit.

The boy returned moments later with a hefty sticky note pad and a ballpoint pen. He placed himself at Lu's other side and began to doodle. It was nothing impressive, Josh was not the creative or artistic one in the family. However, it would be enough for now. LuLu's grip grew stronger as she felt a wash of sustenance surround her. Her ears perked when she began to feed. Even the glow of her rune brightened into a brilliant purple. The frei hummed softly, "I feel better now. But, I hope Lucia will get better too." Her soft features turned to Alex as she looked to the woman with concerned eyes.
