"Yes...the heat...I can't tolerate it. I can't stay out here very long."

Kikue was immediately grateful that Zach had no objections about going inside. As soon as he opened the door, she slipped in, immensely thankful for the air conditioning that kept the room constantly comfortable...for her, at least.

She was still panting, but she tried not to make it as obvious...if that were even possible. Quickly she took a bottled water from the stand next to her bed and began to gulp it down, slurping it a little messily now and then -- her mouth seemed between agreeing with the bottle and needing to lick it out.

Kikue placed the bottle back on the stand slowly, taking a few deep breaths as she sat on her bed and began leafing through some papers there. "I was just writing some more out. Here you go," she handed him a piece of looseleaf with writing on it. It was much harder to write since her last change; the handwriting wasn't as good as it should have been, yet.

The paper read :

Name:

Age:

Gender:

Nationality:

Serum:

Duplex #:

Why brought here:

When brought here:

Additional notes:

Kikue produced a pencil that had been resting on the papers, holding it out to Zach. She did her best to ignore the constantly irritating instinct to get defensive with someone in her room. It made things that much more difficult.

Zach followed her inside and shut the door. The sudden change in temperature was a little bit of a shock to him. Her duplex looked practically identical to his in its design. He didn't recall having seen the inside of anyone's duplexes but his own and Kaveri's. This was the third. He took the paper and pencil offered, trying not to rip any holes in the survey with his claws. His tail swept back and forth along the floor as he read down the list of questions.

He walked over to the nearby wall and pressed the paper up against it as a writing surface, filling out the form while Kikue recuperated. She seemed worse off in the heat that she was admitting to him. He scribbled, pausing only at 'serum' and 'why brought here' to twirl the pencil in his fingers as he thought out his answers. His handwriting, too, was poor, as he had to hold the pencil from much higher up to avoid dragging his claws along the paper when he wrote.

Name: Zachary Bloodstone

Age: 26

Gender: Male

Nationality: American

Serum: Dragon

Duplex #: 38

Why brought here: Job offer

When brought here: Early March 2006

Additional notes:

He left the last part blank, despite having a couple of ideas of things he could list there that would be of help to others. The less people knew about him, the better, even someone like Kikue. The cold in the room was already getting uncomfortable, so he was quick to tear the paper away from the wall and bring it and the pencil back to her. "Here you go. And... take it easy, ok?"

Kikue accepted the paper carefully, trying just as hard not to puncture it with her claws. A look of mild surprise crossed her face; he seemed to be ready to go already. She glanced at his answers to the questions, noting silently that he had trouble writing, too. "Dragon," she mused under her breath. Of course it was impossible to procure actual dragon DNA...so how could they have done it?

She shifted her eyes to look him over again for a moment. Perhaps it was a mix of animals; that was the only thing that made sense to her. Her brain felt like it was going in slow-motion. Should she say anything about a dragon serum? No, it's obvious that they couldn't have gotten something like that, so logical would lead anyone to believe that they created it from what was already available...

Kikue shook her head. It felt much more clear than it had outside, but she still felt out of it. "Thanks," she said, after a pause.

Another pause as she thought. "...If you might like to help with the surveys in the future, let me know, it would probably help since only Nita and I are doing this so far." She forced a smile. What's wrong with me? No, maybe it was just stupid to stay outside for so long...

Zach glanced at her when she mumbled something. His hearing wasn't what it used to be thanks to his lack of external ears, so he had to make sure he hadn't missed a question of hers. "What?"

"If you mean writing them out, I don't think I'm the write guy for that." He held up his clawed hands and smiled wistfully. His tail paused in its repetitve roving to shiver again. "But if you need help with anything else, I probably can. Guess you know which duplex I'm in now."

Kikue tried to regain her composure. She was flustered at having been misheard. I think the heat has gone to my brain. "What I meant was, if you want to deliver them, or hand any out in the future...well, we wouldn't mind the help. Nita and I." She smiled again, genuinely. Glancing at the paper, she verified his duplex number. "Number 38."

She put a clawed finger to the side of her head, smiling still. "I'll remember it." This time, though, she noticed his shiver.

Standing up from her bed, she bit her lip as her tail swished out behind her. "Are you cold in here? It probably is...for everyone else. Well, I'll try to come by and see you again. If you don't mind, that is." She considered Zach a friend.
PostPosted: Fri Nov 03, 2006 10:33 pm

"Oh, sure, I can do that." As long as there didn't have to be any direct contact with Nita, that is.

"I didn't want to say anything... I know how bad it is for you outside." His frill spread slightly when she stood up, an unconscious gesture of surprise at her sudden movement. It returned to loosely draping to either side of his neck soon after. "Of course! You can drop by any time."

"I'd better go. I'll see you around." The cold was starting to go from annoying to oppressive. With a quick wave of his hand, he headed for the door and stepped out into the tropical heat again, shutting it quietly behind him.

Kikue nodded, waving goodbye before he stepped out the door. Once he closed it behind him, she waited a minute or so...then walked to it, and locked it.

I wonder what will happen with these surveys...

She always felt better when she was inside to have the door locked.

Moving her papers off her bed -- she kept Zach's survey on the top -- she spread out on top of her blankets, unconsciously kneeding the fabric slightly in her hands. Paws.

Curling up, she breathed in the cold air deeply, drifting off into sleep.

Synopsis: After the Halloween "party," the ghosts and goblins are all the more real...

Kikue sat with her back against the wall, her large hands wrapped over her furred arms. She sobbed, crying as her head dropped to her chest. Her body shook. Gripping herself, she let the claws dig through the fur to her skin. The tears ran fresh and hot down her face, over her wet nose and into her lap. Everything was all wrong. Everything was...

She pulled her hands away and started at them, holding them out in front of her. The bathroom was around her; her only sanctuary. The hands...paws...they shook as she did, unable to hold them steady. The rough pads that had grown into her palms. The dim bathroom light showed everyting. She had claws. She had fur.

She hugged herself, shaking her head, gasping and sobbing as her hair fell in front of her face. Everything! All wrong... The memories were like watching someone else; watching a movie...

Annie the jungle...but it wasn't really her... Nita...

Animals! Twisted...mutated...hanging from the trees...swinging silently... Fluid and bodies everywhere... Gravestones... To say what... Why the note at all; why the invitation...if all it was going to be was...

Nita... Fiona...

All the other people around her as she'd been clinging to the moist bark of the tree in the jungle, screaming at people to get out of the way as fake-Annie came charging through the underbrush snarling... The bodies hanging from the trees, dripping. Her own feet sinking into a mutilated mass of flesh and bone; the teeth had stuck into her paw. Somehow dragging Nita all the way through it, like it was all a dream...

And the stones, the markers, laid out so neatly. One by one. The lines cut into them that gave them names. That named their murderers.

Complications...

Kikue shook harder, gripping her arms, staring at the floor with wide eyes. Complications. They'd taken her away for complications. Weeks gone by, erased from her life. Complications. She could be next. Maybe would be. Would succumb to this. Would shut down; would not be able to create anything. No new life, no project, no...music.

Her paw wrapped around her left wrist. Her eyes stared holes into the blackened pad growing out of her palm. That hand...that....paw...could play music again... But was it even for music...was it for anything... Was it all a game, for them?

The things hanging from the trees...why the tent at all; why the food, why the damned invitation if it was just waiting to turn into a horror festival?!

She pulled back from her own thoughts, curling up into a ball against the wall in the bathroom. She couldn't stop crying. The tears wet the fur on her face, dripping off the edges of her whiskers. She placed a paw over her face, her shoulders shaking -- what's going to happen to me.

What's going to happen to us...

The labs didn't want to help. Didn't want to help anything. It was plain from their idea of a party...what was it, a warning? A threat? About what? To "be good, or this will happent to you"?

"I don't know," Kikue whispered hoarsely. "I don't know..."

She curled up tighter, putting her arms around her knees. Resting her head, she dropped it as the memories started up again. The tears would not stop. Small plastic trays littered the floor; the sink; the top of the toilet. She ate in here, now. She kept the door locked...not even her room proper felt safe anymore.

Everything, everywhere...an enemy.

No! Not Nita...

Nita? Nita was already gone...

Kikue put an arm over her head, pushing on the back of her hair. She sobbed loudly, trying to hold herself so tightly that she might disappear altogether. Anything to make it stop...

Anything...

After the changes that Kikue has already been through, it isn't difficult to tell the days that will bring with them a change. After a night of horrid, viscerally vivid dreams, she wakes up feeling positively miserable. Hot, cranky, nauseous, and achy.

By midafternoon, the few bare patches of skin that Kikue had left begin to shrink as fur crawls over her body, swallowing her up in the thick patterned fur.

Next come the stretching.... hands and feet stretch larger, the feathery fur between the pads making the large hands and feet look even bigger. Your tail stretches longer - a grinding break between your vertebrae in your tail split and grow. Your ears stretch larger and become fully mobile.

Finally, you're left panting, fully cloaked in thick fur, sensitive whiskers feelign even the sublte changes in the moving air around you.

Stumbleing about the village, Miller continued his way back to the duplex, his body still slugish from all the liquor he had taken in the night before. Most of the day had been spent stumbleing aimlessly trying to find his way back and now that he was so close it seemed a new problem would arise.

Time and time again he tried to turn his key in the doors lock mumbling about faulty locks. Sadly in his still somewhat hungover state he had miss counted duplexes horribly and was trying to get in to the wrong one. Worst of all he still lacked a shirt or pants having failed to find them at the bondfire on his way back.

Kikue lay on her side on the bed, feeling, quite frankly, ill. The first night in her bed after spending the past few days asleep on the bathroom floor wasn't turning out successful at all... I'm coming down with something..

Then, she heard the rustling. The doorknob, moving. Slowly she looked over her shoulder, staring at the doorknob shook slightly, turning back and forth.

What fur was on her body began to rise frighteningly.

She pulled herself up on her bed, backing against the wall. Kikue stared at the doorknob, her chest beginning to heave. ...No. Kikue. Get control... It's not...Annie...

She sucked in a deep breath, trying to steady her nerves, but it wasn't working. Her body screamed at her for moving; it made the aches and pains so much worse. Was someone trying to break into her room...?
PostPosted: Thu Nov 09, 2006 5:16 pm

Miller moaned quietly in frustration trying the key yet again jiggling the knob. "Please please work damn door... I just want to sleep already..." his eyes started to water with a slight frustration, everything was getting ******** up right now. People seemed to either hate him or accept him, he was hungover beyond anything he could imagine for the first time and he was locked outside in his boxers.

He knocked his head against the door now, pulling the key out before banging a fist gently on it. "Just ******** great I get to sleep outside again..."

Kikue heard the knock. Her ears pricked, and it brought her cautiously forward off the bed. Moving silently, she approached the door, hesitating at the knob. Someone had been distinctly trying to get in... If it were the labs, they would just come in...they have to have keys for every room. That meant it was an Islander. It had to be.

Nita...?

Kikue's half-formed paw curled around the doorknob. She unlocked it with a flick of one of her claws, and pulled the door open a crack. She had completely forgotten that it might not be prudent to open it if Nita wasn't there -- she was in a small cami top and shorts...her pajamas.

Staring out the crack in the door, Kikue's eyes widened.

...A man. Boy? Outside.

In his underwear.
