Emain Ablach, Squire of Earth

Emain Ablach had gone to sit in the stands to watch Imhotep and Promethei proceed through the matches. Of course, Promethei had also lost his first match, but it had been exciting to see Imhotep win the first and then the second! He didn’t miss the way Imhotep had glanced out his way, however, and it was impossible to read Imhotep’s expression from that far away.

Just in case, Emain Ablach did not wave.

He also didn’t get up to sit near Promethei when the latter came into the stands and sat not that far away from him. He wanted to. He wanted to get up and razz Promethei for also losing in the first round, call him soft, maybe gently poke him in the ribs repeatedly until he reacted.

He didn’t do that, either.

He wondered, as Imhotep finally lost his match, if Imhotep was going to join Promethei, but instead he seemed to be heading elsewhere. Emain Ablach hoped that wasn’t a byproduct of him sitting there. Running his hands through his hair and ruffling the blond waves, he exhaled slowly and chanced another glance Promethei’s way. Just in time to catch the short wave in his direction.

He didn’t say anything in return, but he did get up and move a row down and a couple seats closer to Promethei than he had been sitting.

Other than that, however, he pretended he hadn’t seen him, keeping his eyes now focused on the matches still going on below them. There was still plenty of interest and action going on. Lots of unlikely characters winning matches—at least, unlikely based on first impression. Then again, it hadn’t been terribly likely that Imhotep had won his first two matches just by looking at him, either.

It was fun! It kept him guessing!

He glanced surreptitiously at Promethei to see if he was also having fun.

It was a close match with Encke, closer than it had been with Anser. His opponent was pretty strong. He managed to come out on top. But his arm was definitely beginning to hurt!

“Thanks.” He said to Encke’s compliment.

He defiantly didn’t look the part of an arm wrestler. He was about five and a half feet tall and slim. But he did have some decent upper arm strength and slightly broad shoulders, mostly from archery. He might have known little about arm wrestling, but his muscles responded to the similar resistance that a bow would give.

Erytheia wondered who his next opponent would be.

Dering, Squire of Lysithea
(Just spectating!)

Dering had found a nice spot out of the way, and with a good view so he could see the people he recognized. He didn’t have much of a voice but he’d been rooting for Perdita and Reims! He’d smiled, he’d clapped, he’d returned Reims’ thumbs up.

He wanted Perdita to win her match, but it was easy to root for the person you’d met. Vela was totally new to him, but he’d still clapped politely when she won.

It was easier to be more enthusiastic for Reims, he was his friend and he’d known him for a while and also he won! And he’d done such a good job that his opponent had seemed totally dazed and walked off!

Unwilling to distract Reims from his next upcoming match, Dering still wanted to make sure he knew he had support from the sidelines. He clapped enthusiastically from where he sat, ankles hooked together as he leaned forward just slightly in his seat to stay comfortable.

(Basic) Sailor Farbauti [spectating]

For a brief moment, Farbauti thought that he hadn’t been loud enough to announce his presence.

For another brief moment, he wondered if he’d messed something up and offended the very tall senshi beside him.

For the briefest of all possible flashes, he thought that maybe, the heh eh heh heh sound that she made was just some natural quirk of her people’s voices and throats because honestly, what did he know? She clearly wasn’t from Earth and so her people might have had any number of weird quirks that Farbauti couldn’t have anticipated.

For a brief moment, he felt like he might just get ignored, and he couldn’t have begrudged the space senshi her right to do that because altogether, he wasn’t really very interesting.

And then she started ruffling his hair.

Farbauti half-squawked and half-yelped as her hand came toward him, fully expecting to get smacked around. For all part of him screamed to get out of the way, the rest of him froze in place, too startled to dodge the incoming blow. He managed to bite back on the impulse to whine about the hair-ruffles, but only barely. Only for fear of offending her somehow. Looking up at her, then over at the eternal senshi covered in the leaves, Farbauti let his hangdog facial expression broadcast exactly how confused and pathetic he felt.

“I…?” He probably needed to say something for himself now, didn’t he? “I guess I won’t use my magic, then? ……Not that I was going to? But? It’s just……?” He shrugged, afraid to admit to his name and sphere, in case they upset the very tall space senshi? But he’d already dug himself into the hole, so—“I’m Farbauti? Of, like, rage? So……if we wouldn’t like her when she’s angry, that’s exactly what my magic would do?”

Super Sailor Surtur (Spectating)

Although he had lost his match early on, Surtur was very pleased to see Ymir progress through the brackets. Well, Ymir didn’t seem like he was having too much fun, but Surtur was proud of him, anyway.

There was a lot for them to think about and work towards. Even though this wasn’t the best way to meet others and make connections, they would one day need to ask others for help when it came to clearing the Chaos from their worlds. Ymir might not think he cared about what happened to his world, but Surtur suspected he would be more at peace if he didn’t have the Chaos hanging over him.

“Well done. You have accomplished much. Your prowess is certainly underestimated,” Surtur beamed with pride as he stood by Ymir to watch his matches. Even if Ymir was giving him dirty looks.

"You, ya ********' shrub," the Worst Minion kept chuckling, her hands going from Farbauti's hair to his scrawny shoulders. "I've Grieve of Grieve and this guy shrunk in the godsdamned wash, didn't he?" Instead of clearing up any confusion, she happily added to it, going on, "Farbuddy used to be so big and huge, he once punched off the top of a mountain and fought fifty 'taurs on the flattened ground. Then ******** forgave them all their trespass and made them all weep to a man for the rest of their days with his wisdom. They all went on to create the Order of the Salted d**k Wagglers or some s**t in your honoured ********' name and now you're..."

She had moved on to pinching his cheeks and was wheezing to the point of tears herself, rambling out the small truths and epic bullshit of the past without any bit of restraint. Not knowing which was which was one of the many punishments of dying instead of surviving, one they'd just have to figure out for themselves.

Turning her gaze back to Puck, she griped, "You're pretty much the ******** same. Why couldn't the Cauldron s**t you out like a wet kitten, too?" It'd have been funnier, but then, a part of her hoped more of the band showed up as close echoes to their past selves, rather than wimpy little ghosts of former greatness.

Knight Tanais of Mars (spectating)

The petite blonde got a wink and a salute from Tanais as she surrendered her seat to the next competitor. Legs swinging from the hip in a lazy stroll, she let her path take her to the sidelines where she could hook her thumbs in her belt and watch the rest of the matches.

The pink knight wasn't too far off and Tanais remembered both their match and the small cheering going on after. She grinned as she leaned over towards the other woman, pitching her voice to be heard over the rest of the crowd.

"I don't think we were properly introduced. I'm Tanais. Did you know that senshi I was up against? She surprisingly strong for how she looks... but I suppose that's the same for most of us." She said, her head tilted.

What had started as a large crowd of competitors was now down to just a handful. Those who were still undefeated were beginning to gain followings and interest. It was now time for the semifinal rounds.

Cybele smiled as she read out names. This time, it was just a few.

Reims vs Ametkhan
Eupheme vs Wallia

Meissa vs Kaifeng
Vela vs Ymir

It looked like his next match would be against Ganymede.

He knew her from word of mouth to be a princess. He had seen her on a number of occasions when Chaos was in the mix and many of Order was needed. But he’d never talked to her before. He really needed to stop being such a recluse and meet more people. He hadn’t formally been introduced to the two transcended senshi in his previous two rounds either. He’d probably gotten too complacent after his wonder had been saved and he himself transcended.

“I’m Erytheia, knight of Cosmos. I guess this is the last round. Um. Are you ready?”

So much for confidence.

Erytheia held his hand. He was surprised he got this far. He’d try his best this last round.

Kaifeng, Squire of Saturn

The fact that he was once again moving on through the rounds left Kaifeng feeling slightly dazed. First, he’d thought that Belmont would definitely get him; Belmont had already won his first match and he didn’t look like any slouch. Then, even knowing that he’d needed to respect Mechelen by giving her his best efforts as an opponent, he’d felt like she had a good chance of beating him, after winning two matches and proving her strength so well.

It was a good kind of dazed. Unexpected, but pleasantly surprising. Kaifeng just didn’t know, as he idly ruffled his bangs and waited for Princess Cybele-jiejie to post the next round of brackets, how he really felt? At least, not with any words. Sort of like he was buzzing? A little bit like something was bubbling inside of him? But a more pleasant bubbling, like you’d just cracked open a bottle of sparkling water, rather than the pent-up Diet Coke and Mentos feeling that another situation might have brought.

Musically, he thought he would have expressed the feeling with some lively piccolo and jaunty fiddle played in harmony, all bright and energetic and in a major key. Perhaps that was his young student’s influence on him, since Miss Huanjing Guo was so ever fond of pirates and the piccolo [or other high-pitched wind instrument]-and-fiddle combination lent itself well to creating Pirate Vibes in music. For his own purposes, Kaifeng thought that the piccolo-fiddle union would accurately reflect the bubbly, enthusiastic feeling of having made it so far in the match-ups that Cybele-jiejie had arranged for everyone.

Playing them uptempo, Kaifeng would’ve underscored the combined sound of fiddle and piccolo with a mix of dizi and guqin (whether his own or Huanxi’s old one that he’d seen in some of Xingyi’s memories that he’d recovered up at his Wonder). Another combination of wood and strings would create a solid complement and counterpoint to the piratical sound of the primary melody, and the fuller, rounder sounds that one could create with dizi and guqin would have provided not quite a bass-line, but a foundation that should have felt more grounding for the airy, spirited melody. (Plus, the East vs. West nature of the juxtaposition probably would have created a sense of sonic conflict, in the way that moods could contradict each other but still coexist.)

However, in order to capture his own current sense of unsettlement and confusion, Kaifeng thought he’d have the dizi and guqin play more slowly and purposefully, seesawing through minor-key progressions that would’ve asked the major-key melody “Are you sure about that?” Perhaps it would’ve been a good time to go full Locrian mode about it, channeling some energy like the bass-line from The Strokes’ “Juice Box”, the Hellish atmosphere of “At Doom’s Gate” from the video game, or the disquieting everything from Björk’s “Army of Me.” Unlike those examples, Kaifeng’s currently imaginary piece of music would’ve moved through its Locrian progression much more slowly, like the plodding advance of a horror movie monster. Languidly lolling from note to note could have used the Locrian mode’s natural tension to play with the listeners; the musical build-up would seek resolution and listeners would know to expect that, but the Locrian mode’s use of a minor third and diminished fifth would deny them that sense of completion.

Normally, the darkness introduced by using a Locrian progression would have been used to add a sense of foreboding to any given scene: accompanying the actions of a villainous character (or at least a very creepy one, like the gravedigger speaker in John Kirkpatrick’s “Dust to Dust”), introducing a sense of dread or danger (such as characterizing the threats that Björk’s speaker leveled at her listener in “Army of Me” or deeply immersing the player in the Infernal setting in Doom), or creating a moody atmosphere that either didn’t properly resolve and left the listener to stew in their feelings (like Uematsu Nobuo’s “Mines of Narth” music from Final Fantasy VI).…

For all the instability of the Locrian mode lent itself well to nefarious situations and characters, Kaifeng could imagine a sense of push and pull emerging between the bright melody and the underlying Locrian moodiness, something that would perfectly characterize how Kaifeng felt torn between the joy of progressing and the confusion that ensued from not expecting that.… Maybe with a solid, stabilizing bass-line to sonically tie everything together, so that the dissonance of that idea didn’t sound so off-putting as to be ineffective.…

Hmmm, he’d need to experiment when he and Helene got back home.

For now, though, Kaifeng put on a warm and pleasant smile as he rocked up to meet his next opponent. He’d never met this senshi before, and had only somewhat been able to pay attention to her matches while handling his own. She had a cute fuku, though, with her cat-ear headband and the fluffy bits around her gloves and boots. All the browns found a nice visual complement in her hair, as well: the turquoise braids she wore provided a nice pop of color as well as a sense of balance.

As Kaifeng settled in opposite her, he gave the senshi a little wave. “Kaifeng of Saturn,” he said brightly, “and here’s to a good match!”

Super Meissa

Tips, about arm wrestling? How did that work? Meissa rubbed her arms briskly together in an effort to massage muscles that were starting to ache, just a little before she brought a finger to the corner of her mouth in the universal sign of being "deep in thought" before she chuckled. Besides just trying to get your opponents arm pinned so that they lost, was there any hard and fast tips that she could provide to a fellow super senshi?

"I dunno. I don't really think there's many tips besides perhaps trying to warm up the arm that you'll be using and to give everything you got while in your match. I don't know if those qualify as tips or just common sense. Sorry if that's not at all helpful Beira,"

Meissa had turned her attention to the other matches around them before stepping back from the tables that were there for matches before she gave a soft look of surprise that her name, hers ... Meissa, was one step closer to the finals.

Super Meissa

Meissa had meandered away from Beira in order to get a look at the updated brackets. There was a lot of suspense in the air now that the semi-finals were upon all those that remained. She was one of the final four left in the group that had started with a lot more people. Her gaze took in the name of her next opponent and pretty soon she found herself seated in front of Kaifeng and she opted give the Squire a little finger waggle before she set her right arm down on the table, "go easy on me?"

Perhaps if she'd been paying more attention she would have belatedly realized that she had brought the wrong arm up into play for this round. It apparently showed that she had a little too much distracting thoughts going on inside her brain that she only caught the mistake as her arm was easily pinned. Awkwardly the Bobcat senshi shook out her overpowered limb before standing and holding it out for Kaifeng to shake, if he was inclined to do so.

"It looks like you've prevailed. Congratulations."

As much as Meissa wanted to stick around and spectate, she figured that while she was here, that she aught to give the training grounds a go. She gave a half-heartened message of good luck to the Saturn Squire before she turned to walk away. The final four, and she placed fourth. It was supposed to be a sense of fun, but still, the loss stung, just a little.

Sailor Chibi Eupheme vs Wallia

Eupheme nodded to Katerini, pleased that she got the Knight correctly! The flash cards helped! As well as having parents who were both a Princess and a Knight. But she was taking a lot of time to learn everything she could about the magical war that she was now a part of. As well as helping out their guest Senshi from other worlds.

She took hold of Katerini’s hand and pushed with all her might! She was glad that Katerini wasn’t going easy on her and giving her a good “fight”! Once she managed to get her hand onto the table she jumped up for joy.

“Oh! Thank you, that was fun! We’ll have to do a rematch sometime, yeah?” she chirped with excitement. “Okay, wish me luck with the next one too!” she grinned and waved as she skipped over to the next round table.

“Hi, I’m Eupheme. Pronouns she her,” the chibi Senshi greeted her next opponent. Her next opponent looked just as young as her last one, although still high school aged. Which meant they were probably twice Eupheme’s age. But that was okay, she would just have to do her best.

“It’s nice to meet you! Don’t go easy on me okay?” she requested and settled in to take hold of her opponent’s hand.

Reims, Page of Ganymede vs Ametkhan

The more Reims was around the people on this world, the more out of place he felt. His last opponent didn’t even try, which left him with flushed ears and wondering if there was something wrong with him to make others not want to have anything to do with him.

The same could be said about those Lysithea knights who seemed more interested in Dering -- which he didn’t blame them! Dering was supportive and apparently looked like someone they knew, but it was also a stark reminder that he was an outlier.

Oh, but it wasn’t that they were interested in Dering that bothered him, but that they interrupted his and Dering’s conversation and didn’t care.

That was fine. He knew he had to work hard to impress people already or make them want to even talk to him. He was willing to do a lot of unsavory things if it meant fitting in…

Thankfully, Dering was there to cheer for him. He cast him a small smile and turned to find his next opponent, although he couldn’t say he was too enthusiastic about it. Those who were just spectating seemed to be having a better time than the competitors.

But this next girl seemed closer to his age, and he offered her a small smile.
