That's What I'm Counting On (Ellie + ********* style="font-size: 11px">Stress.
It was something that Ellie had never done well with. Then again, most people usually didn't do well with such a thing either. However, it wasn't everyday that a teenager was put into a leadership position against their will. In the blonde's mind, the only reason she got shoved into this new role was because of the stupid feathers that were on the back of her fuku as Sailor Iris. It didn't matter that her comrades had given reasonable justification for why Iris was leader rather than Metis. For the blonde, the blind girl made a much better leader, and that was how it was going to stick in her mind.
In an effort to find something to distract her mentally, the teenage girl had decided to make today a field trip to the dump by Hank's Garage. She could sort through the various pieces of crap and find a treasure or two. Heck, there were even crushed cars in that space. It was a good thing that Hank never minded her pecking through his garbage.
Sadly, the pickings today were quite slim. She spent an hour rummaging through the area, her backpack perched upon her back. After an hour of digging around, she found the hood of a car to sit on. She had found maybe a couple of screws she could use. It wasn't much to feed her backpack with, but she tossed the screws in with a sigh.
"...usually there's so much 'ere..."
There was a very faint WHUMP sound that beat against the hood of the car, but the blonde hadn't turned to pay attention to it.
"...it probably has to do with you being distracted..."
The teen didn't even turn to look at the cat who was obviously sitting beside her now. She kept looking out to the piles of broken machinery surrounding them and providing an oddly beautiful setting for them. "So, how long ya been followin' me, Cat?"
The guardian made certain to keep a respectable distance, merely out of consideration for this girl. Sure, ********* wanted to rub up against the tomboy, but she'd probably get swatted away much faster if she pushed the teen like that.
"Since somewhere about your neighborhood, so for a while." Her haunches were seated upon the metallic green hood of the car.
There was silence for a bit, save for the tapping of Ellie's fingers against the metal of the car. "...Cat..."
"Yes, Ellie?" The girl might not have been nearly as respectful, but ********* could maintain her manners.
"...Ya didn't vote fer who shoulda been captain..."
"Correct."
Gold eyes finally fell upon the cat. Before she had even said anything, her expression seemed to read that she wanted answers. Two words tumbled from her lips as she looked at the cat. "Why not?"
The manx had such a pleasant expression upon her face. It was a bit soothing to look at. There was no hesitation in her answer. "It is not my place to decide such things. You were decided amongst your peers to be the most qualified."
There were so many things Ellie could have pointed out as being false with that statement. A little kid was not her peer, nor was a "tween" who was 4 years younger than her. Ellie was not qualified, and the cat definitely should have had some sort of say! However, she managed to not really notice any of those blatantly "wrong" things, because her mind was far more frazzled than she could ever realize.
"...Who would ya have chosen fer leader... if it was up ta ya?"
"It is not up to me," the cat politely reminded.
"It's a hypothetical... humor me, Cat!"
Once again, there was no hesitation in her response. It was almost as if ********* had thought this through many times before. "I would have chosen you for the job."
The teen beat her fist against the hood of the car, making a loud WHUMP that could probably be heard from at least 20 feet away. "WHY does everyone keep sayin' that?!!" In her frustration, the blonde turned away from the cat, obviously not satisfied with the response she was given. It was almost like Ellie was pouting.
Almost.
Sadly, the cat actually had predicted some sort of reaction similar to what had happened from the girl. Though her ears had folded back for a moment due to the loud noise, she didn't stir even in the slightest. The cat remained sitting as calmly as before, eyes still looking to the tomboy. Whether or not Ellie had meant her question to actually get an answer, the feline continued to speak, addressing exactly what the girl had shouted out.
"You have a thick skull, I will give you that. Even though your fellow teammates spelled it out for you as to why they chose you, their words obviously didn't get through to your ears. I won't necessarily use their words though. Yes, Metis is intelligent, but intelligence does not mean anything when it comes to leadership. A leader needs to know what they stand for and not let others sway their opinion. A leader needs to not be afraid to speak their mind. A leader needs to be strong not only for themselves, but for everyone they are leading."
Here, the cat grew quiet, not because she was finished, but more because she was predicting someone would have a few choice things to say to her.
"How can ya say all of that?! Ya know better than anyone I can't even use my powers as an eternal senshi! How can ya call me strong or knowing what I stand for?! I don't even know what I stand for!"
Apparently the cat's pause had been effectively timed.
The cat left a bit more of a pause, just in case the girl needed to get more off of her chest. When she found there was silence lingering, her voice once more pleasantly filled the quiet air.
"I can say it because it is all true. Maybe you are so blocked into your own perspective that you can't see the big picture. You are only human after all."
She laughed a bit, as if in an effort to lighten the mood a bit. When no other laughter accompanied her own, she continued on. "I have seen time and again that you have a very set idea as to what is wrong or right. Some might call that a code of honor. You don't betray your ideals for convenience. You don't accept excuses. You hold not only other people, but yourself accountable for actions taken."
The teen didn't say a word. It definitely seemed like she was still pouting, as if none of the words had made it into her ears and she was stubbornly blocking out everything the cat said.
The cat stood herself up and stretched slightly. "Ah, so it looks like I have worn out my welcome for today. Well, Ellie... maybe you don't know what you stand for... but I am sure you will figure it out. And that's what I'm counting on!"
The cat hopped off of the hood of the car, but rather than leave right away, she literally padded into Ellie's line of view.
"Oh, and about your Rainbow Revenge... you should probably try to simplify what you are thinking about when forming the rainbow itself. Where is the energy coming from?"
"...what?"
Before she could get an answer, the cat had already started to run, leaving Ellie with yet another question that was not answered.
"...God damn it cat..." she sourly muttered to herself as she sat there for a while longer. It wasn't like she had anywhere to go. It was a weekend after all.

Did You Remember to Think? (Iris + ********* style="font-size: 11px">Her arm was throbbing. It made sense that her arm was throbbing. She had a big old spike lodged in her upper arm. During the fight, there was no time to remove it, since then there would be much more blood exiting the wound. Fortunately, it wasn't as big as the porcupine needle from that youma a while back, but that didn't mean it didn't hurt.
The senshi's first stop was going to be the emergency room. In the back of her mind, she couldn't help but remember how she had been here recently to drop off Hugbell. Stopping around the corner, the senshi finally paused to remove the strange spike. Last thing she needed to explain to the nurses was that she was attacked by a monster. No, the usual knife fight excuse seemed to be the more realistic approach to this matter. Before she could touch the spike, another hand was already touching the spike.
A hand that had a crisp white cuff just below it.
"You did a number on yourself." Green eyes were looking to the senshi's gold ones.
Obstinately, she turned away, as if trying to avoid the subject. "Yeah, so what?"
In a playful, sing-song tone, the silvery haired girl in front of Iris mentioned "Oh, I don't know... I was under the impression that you said that the team wasn't supposed to patrol alone. One of your first official 'rules' as captain. Along with the fact that if you came across trouble, you were supposed to call someone on the team as backup before engaging..." In a well practiced manner, the guardian pulled out the spike quite suddenly. With the main source of the senshi's pain being removed, she easily reverted back to her usual form.
"You know... something like that came to mind as I saw you earlier..."
Iris hissed out at the sudden extraction of the spike, then gripped her hand on the opposite arm against the area tightly. It didn't take too long for the palms of her white gloves to turn a crimson color. "So ya saw?" the blonde asked as she pushed her back firmly against the wall to make this situation slightly more bearable.
"Considering how many Senshi and Negaverse Agents were in the vicinity, it would be a wonder if I had not gone to the battle. Lots of energy bouncing around." The tailless cat sat her rump down and remained just looking up to the teen's eyes that were blatantly trying to avoid hers.
"You should have called Metis, Parthenope or Irene..." ********* was not going to mention Hygiea, since she was quite certain the child had a bedtime to tend to. "When they find out that you fought without checking in with them... they'll be angry with you..."
In a nearly snarling tone, Iris threw an accusation at the manx. "Yer gonna tattle on me 'bout this?!"
Despite the tone Iris was taking with her, ********* remained her usual pleasant self. Her response was thoughtful and honest. "No, it is not my place to tell them. It is your place to tell them. You cannot avoid them forever."
"It's not like I even go t'school with any of them!"
"Regardless... they will probably figure out on their own. Don't you go to school with Ridley's brother? Same English class and everything?"
One word was groaned out. "...Sh********t..."
There was a lengthy pause after that curse.
The manx, naturally, was the one to break the momentary silence. "Do tell me... why did you make those rules? About patrolling in pairs and to call in if there is any danger?"
Naturally, the first response that came out was "I don't know." A classic teenage avoidance response. Yet, eventually, a more sincere response followed. "I guess because I don't want'em t'get hurt?" Her fingers squeezed her arm a bit tighter, as if to remind her that she needed to get into the emergency room soon.
"If you don't want them hurt, do you think they do not want you getting hurt as well? You should give them the same respect." Another silence followed, and once again, the cat interrupted it, this time with a reminder.
"Don't forget to henshin down before going in... go get yourself in there before you bleed all over the concrete."
With a nod of the head, the cat stood her haunches up and began to pad away. However, before she ran off, she added something. "You did a good job back there... you just need to remember to think..." With that, the cat ran off into the nearby bushes. The sound of rustling leaves and a playful jingling of a bell was all that could be heard as she left.
"...whatever..." At the wall, there was no longer a senshi, but a teenage girl wearing an obnoxiously puffy skirt that went to about her knees and some sort of vest. The red and black striped stockings-turned-gloves were now absorbing the blood, though it wasn't nearly as noticeable as it had been on the white senshi gloves. Pushing herself up off the wall, the tomboy made her way to the entrance.
One thing was for sure. Her mom was going to be furious that she had ditched, since obviously knife fights don't happen in prom. Her plan to avoid prom had come back to bite her in the a** in the end, and now she was doomed to endure the wrath of Mom.
