Conundrum Indian Summer had lasted the entire month of October, but now November was here and so was the chill of winter soon to come. Anastacia was now restricted to indoor climates and the thought of having to remain in Zeke's apartment for the majority of the next few months made the spider queen shudder beneath the afghan she had covered herself with. Once upon a time she had looked forward to sealing herself in the apartment, away from the world at large, but now her daily walks and meanderings around Durem had become a part of her days and giving up part of her routine did not feel right to her.
The spider queen frowned as she unfocused her gaze to look at her own reflection rather than at the drizzling, darkening world outside. She saw she was frowning and didn't make an attempt to stop, instead snuggling deeper within the folds of her chosen cover and farther back into the squishy papasan that usually belonged to Zeke. The vet was not here - called to work a full day's shift on a Saturday - and for that the spider queen was rather grateful. The only thing worse than sitting inside and bemoaning the seasonal change was doing that with Zeke talking on and on in the background, trying to be "helpful". Granted, his day's work was about done now and he would be home within an hour or two, but Anastacia relished and kept close to heart what she could get and had gotten today. All things considered, it had been rather nice and she was, if anything, as comfortable as could be. She was covered, seated in the world's most snuggly chair, and Zeke had made sure to remove the air conditioners that morning and turn on the heat - just for her.
Anastacia felt no chill in this place though the world outside was blustery, rainy, and rendered all the colder as night set in earlier than it had ever seemed to before. But still; nice or not, comfortable or not, her days were now left with a gaping hole in them that not even working on her dress-work or knitting could fill. It was the kind of hole that would give her a severe case of cabin fever quicker than last year and that would render her stir crazy in no time at all. She could and would go to work with Zeke when hunger beckoned, but she knew once she left with him she would be trapped in that smelly too-clean place for the remainder of his work day. That would not do. She would not look forward to such trips and would most certainly not make it a point to go with him for anything but the need to feed off some hapless critter, and even then, only if she desperately had to. She would, however, make sure Zeke took her out when she wanted and she knew her man would be all too happy to comply. If they shared anything at all, they shared a love of getting out of the house when winter came. This idea worked, but was flawed by the fact Zeke had to work every day from morning till evening. She could wait most days, but there would be times Anastacia's cabin fever would eat her from the inside out - this she knew for a fact. And what would she do during those times?
The Frei looked from the window to the room at large. The coffee table was within arms reach and topped with books, her sewing and knitting supplies, the remotes for the TV, DVD, and stereo, and a short stack of DVDs. The couch was empty but covered with another afghan like always. The shelves across the room were filled with books, movies, and video games depending on which was in question; the TV and stereo were presently off. Anastacia had a bounty here, but movie marathons got to be old hat. Books could only be read for so long and so many times and games...well...she had never played a video game before. Zeke did when the mood often struck him and now and again Anya had watched him do so. The machines themselves looked easy enough to turn on, but they - the "Xbox 360" and "PS3" is what Zeke had called them when she hadn't asked what they were - had a strange set up that was foreign to her. Lists of things rather than a simple menu like many DVDs had that sometimes opened up into OTHER lists of things. Zeke navigated those like a pro but Anya had never so much as touched a controller.
"They seem stupid anyway." Shooting ugly monsters by the bucketful, saving characters who sounded as if they were normally competent enough to save themselves, and occasionally jumping out of her seat because Zeke did so first with a strangled cry - what fun could really be found there for her? Anastacia shook her head and looked away from the vicinity of the TV, rolling her shoulders forward with a frustrated sigh. Her eyes made it to the living room's opening that led out into the hall. Through her personal fog she looked toward the door, knowing it was there a few feet down the hardwood line. She paused a moment, thinking about what lay beyond it; the halls and stairs of the building. "I could wander the floors..."
For maybe a time or two before it got to be old hat, really. Unlike the city at large with all its unique streets, buildings, parks, and stores, the apartment complex would just be floor after floor of the same walls, carpeting, and doors on each side with the only change being the numbers on each of the latter. Anastacia didn't write this off completely but knew wandering about inside the apartment building couldn't be an every day thing unless she wanted to drive herself utterly mad - which she was doing a good job of right this moment. Her frown deepened; she was stuck and winter was on her doorstep.

Third Time's The Charm There was a sullenness to the spider queen although today was her special day. As she brushed her long hair free of the night's tangles, she frowned at her own reflection in the mirror, feeling a sense of knowing that today - like the years past - would be the same. Why wouldn't it be? Her first birthday had been a farce and the second no better, so there was no reason why the third would deviate from the trend. She had come to accept that now, although in the recesses of her mind she told herself she should not.
April twenty-fourth was her day. Her birthday; and on this day she deserved the best of the best now more than ever. She should be catered to on this day, not the day after or the following week. She should be asked what she wanted to do, where she wanted to go, and - just as importantly - showered with gifts and praise for simply being around! But for two years now that had not been the case, though no fault of her own. The man she lived with, the man she called her Guardian, had been at fault. Certainly, he had made up for placing his job above her on her day, but in her heart Anya felt it just wasn't the same. The day of was the most important thing, because it was her day. She knew he knew that, but even though he apologized vehemently and eagerly, she wasn't sure he really cared.
The Frei made a soft noise in the back of her throat and had to turn away from the mirror. Any longer staring as hard into all six of her eyes as she was and she felt as though the looking glass wouldn't stay in one piece. It wasn't fair! Every year since she had been born HIS birthdays had always gone as he had wanted! He got to do the things he wanted to do, go to the places he wanted to go, got showered with gifts beyond measure, and got to spend time with people who wished him happy birthday and complimented him until he ears practically bled! Was that so much to ask for? Not in her mind.
"Happy birthday Anya," Nel's voice reached her ears and the Frei turned toward her pet's habitat in time to see the tarantula walk out of her makeshift nest and up to the tank's glass wall. "You look very pretty today."
"Thank you," the Raevan replied, though her voice was not its usual cool neutrality. There was a noticeable edge to it; aggravated, but tinged with that sullenness she felt inside her ribs.
"Will you be doing anything special today?"
"I doubt it." Anya put her hairbrush down and swept from that area of her room. Her bedroom was suddenly feeling claustrophobic rather than cozy and she wanted to clear her head. All the same, she was not looking forward to leaving her nest. Anastacia just knew what she would find when she went down the hall, and the thought of seeing a note from her oh-so-loving caretaker made her give an unladylike snort of dissension. She could just see the words written out in Zeke's messy scrawl now:
Dear Anya, I am SO SO SO SO SORRY but I had to go to work because beasts of low intelligence rank higher in my life than you do. I know it's your birthday, but you'll have one next year don't worry! Besides, I'll make it up to you later, even though I know it's YOUR special day TODAY and I get to do the things I wanna do on mine every year without fail. But what do I care, I'm a dumbass and the word 'fairness' is not in my vocabulary.
See you when I get home at half past whenever!
Love, Zeke
Her wings snapped when she opened them, the spear-like appendages spreading high and wide behind her as her anger rose in her chest to her temples. A scowl settled onto her cherry red lips and Anastacia glared down the empty hallway as she exited her bedroom. The air out here was cooler, but it did nothing for her head. Instead it made her feel a little dizzy, and she hated that sensation more than ever now, but she pressed on - raising a hand to her head to stop the throbbing in her skull. However, the closer she got to the end of the hall, the more her head swam. The idea of finding a letter only solidified in her beliefs and with each moment new variations of its wording went through her head, where each one was more rude yet somehow more nauseatingly cheery than the last. The hand against her head balled into a fist and the Virus Frei barreled around the corner at a speed she hadn't consciously reached.
"HAPPY BIRTHDAY!"
Sunlight hit her full in the face, but the raucous shout was what made her stumble back. She blinked rapidly to clear her vision, and what came into view was the opposite of what she had expected.
Zeke stood in the middle of the living room between his chair and the coffee table that was now loaded with presents while the shiny confetti he had thrown into the air upon his Raevan's arrival filtered through the air around him. The brightest, goofiest smile he had was full on his face and he looked by no means apologetic for shouting at the top of his lungs and scaring the daylights out of his ward. As she looked at him, he began to laugh, but tried unsuccessfully to hide it behind one confetti-speckled hand. Anastacia straightened as the laughter washed over her, but remained unaware her expression had fallen and become blatant gawking, while her fist had fallen and was now curled protectively over her heart. She remained that way and with her large wings raised for striking long after Zeke finally reined himself in and managed to speak again.
"You're looking as lovely as ever, Anya!"
She closed her eyes and gave her head a shake, but when she stopped and opened them again, the vet was still there. He was dressed in his favorite pair of jeans - the violently violet ones with the green exclamation point over his left knee, and the red x over the right - and an equally bright yellow tank top, splattered with orange and green paint and a scattered helping of light blue stars. His feet were bare, but his arms were not. Zeke had covered them from knuckles to elbows with a pair of purple-edged white arm warmer-type gloves and a few bracelets he tossed on whenever he was feeling in the mood to. His hair was styled in his usual mohawk and tied back to boot, with hair ties that were certain to be just as clashed and flashy as the rest of him. His cornicello - a present from his boyfriend who knows how many years ago and a permanent fixture on the raver - rested on his chest and completed the picture. The only thing dark about man was his arm tattoos which were on full display, and drawn taut over his biceps as the twenty-nine year old man dusted the remaining sparkles off his palms
"Wh...What are you doing here?" She knew what she had expected, and like so many times before, Zeke had gone and ripped the carpet right out from under her.
"What do you mean?" His light brown eyes were bright and Zeke cocked his head at her curiously. "You know it's your birthday, right?"
Had she the blood to, she would have blushed.
"I know it is! But you're not supposed..."
"Supposed to what?" One pierced brow was lofted and he looked most curious.
"Supposed to..." 'Be here' was what she wanted to say, but Anya couldn't make the words come out. She thought back to her birthdays past. On both occasions he had been here when she had woken up, but he had been made to leave and push the festivities aside soon after. Anastacia shook her head and crossed her arms, nose going in the air as she turned her back on him. "Never mind. Don't you have work today? Best get changed; they won't let you in looking like that."
From behind her, the vet chuckled but the sound wasn't sheepish like it should have been. It made her turn back to face him, staring openly once more.
"Not today, sweetheart. I took today off weeks ago, remember?"
She frowned. She had heard that plenty before.
"There's no way, come heck or high water, that I'm going into work today. It's your birthday, Anya, and I'm NOT missing this one."
She didn't speak, but stared him down mistrustfully as he approached her. The spider queen lofted an arched brow of her own as he stopped a few feet shy of her and dug into his pocket. Zeke procured his phone and held it out to her.
"Go on, take it."
He gave the phone a shake in her direction and the Frei sighed. Fine, she would humor him this once. Taking the touchscreen cell from him, she pressed her finger down on the black screen. Nothing happened. She stared at him flatly.
"Try pressing that small button on the top right." He was fighting to contain a grin.
Anastacia did so, but again the phone remained dark.
"It's broken." She tossed it to him.
"It's off," he replied as he caught it, and the grin broke free. "No calls, in or out...Y'know, so long as nothing catches on fire or anything."
She didn't return his smile, but watched him pocket the phone again and hold his arms out to his sides as though he was going to embrace her. She backed away and he chuckled again.
"I'm yours, Anya, all of me. It's your birthday, so tell me what you wanna do and we'll go do it!"
There was silence after his words ended and it was then that the vet's pomp began to falter. It didn't happen all at once, but when the spider queen said nothing and made no motion, Zeke's eyes showed some worry and the grin lessened. His shoulders slackened soon after and puzzlement started to show. His lips were parted to speak and it was clear a question was on his mind, but before the words could get out, Anastacia had reached one long wing out and jabbed the vet in the collarbone through the sleeve of his tank top.
"Ow! Hey!" His left hand flew up and Zeke pulled the cloth away from the sore spot. A red mark was forming, but even though there was a small scratch, there was no blood. He looked up and saw Anastacia floating toward the kitchen. "When I said you could do anything, I meant like going out!" Even stunned, his voice warbled with amusement. "What was that for?"
The spider queen looked over her shoulder at him as she reached the doorway, cool neutrality back and looking as though it had never left in the first place.
"To make sure I wasn't dreaming."
