On Matters of the Heart
User Image
Kadryn was in an interesting situation, one she hadn’t been in since she was 4 years old. Her wings were broken and she had to walk everywhere, or ride since Kirosh had two Hastar mounts. Walking wouldn’t have bothered her, she walked everywhere anyways when she wasn’t in the mood for flying, but riding? That was a whole different kettle! First off, she had no clue on how to control the Hastar or anything else about riding! And it used a whole different set of muscles than she was used too! Kadryn shifted slightly with a twinge of pain. Her butt and legs hurt! Kirosh looked back over his shoulder with her and flashed her a grin,
“Hurts doesn’t it?” Kadryn stuck her tongue out at him.
“Course it does! How can you stand sitting on something so uncomfortable for so long?!” He was always riding his Hastars when they were traveling, even when Karyn was walking instead of flying. Kadryn envied the way he was so comfortable in the saddle. Kirosh chuckled and turned back to face forward.
“Practice! And I rather like riding; if you like something, the pain doesn’t matter as much. Plus it’s much faster than walking and I can look at the scenery instead of having to watch my feet all the time!”
Kadryn chuckled, “You can always stop and look around if you’re worried about tripping. I think you just like being lazy.”
“Me? Lazy? How could you even think that of me!?” Kirosh laughed and shook his head, his mohawk shivering with the movement. Kadryn smiled and turned to watch the surrounding area; it certainly was beautiful. The rolling dunes of the desert had given way to stubby foot hills covered in brush and small trees which had grown into tall winding slopes filled with greenery and trees. The air was quiet and filled with the sweet scent of the mountains. A chilly breeze blew softly, rustling the leaves and bringing with it the smell of wildflowers. Kadryn’s body relaxed and she smiled gently. It was places like this that made her fall in love with the wild all over again!
Beautiful as the scenery was, her eyes always ended up straying back to watch Kirosh. Since she was now riding behind him, she’d been able to watch him a lot more this past week than she had before. The situation was interesting in more ways then just the broken wings. She had never felt this way about someone before. It was odd, she’d seen other guys before, and none of them had the same effect that Kirosh did. She always noticed the way his shoulders filled out his shirt, the way his muscles rippled when he moved, his smile… all of them made her heart speed up. She’d certainly seen muscles and smiles before, but why did they not attract her the way Kirosh did? The past week of riding had given her, besides muscle pain, a chance to think things over without worrying or interruptions. Kirosh had told her that in case of a Dragon attack, she was to sit off to the side until her body had healed, so she wasn’t too worried about keeping an eye out or worrying about attacks. It let her mind think and process her feelings, which she didn’t often do. She thought back to that day far in her past when her aunt and mother had talked with her about boys and the matters of the heart. Guess this is love right? But if it is… what do I do? How do I react to this? Or should I do anything at all? I don’t want to lose my friendship with him... do I ignore my feelings, push them down until they go away?
Her mind kept circling back to these thoughts, what, if anything, should she do? It never occurred to her that perhaps her feelings would be returned. After all, she’d talked to, or been talked at, by Kirosh’s clan members, people he was friends with. She had been heard time and time again how she wasn’t Kirosh’s “type;” mostly from other girls, which had really hurt. Tall, curvy, and loud was his type apparently, and Kadryn’s heart twinged painfully every time she thought about it. That didn’t fit her at all! It had also been painful to see him flirting with some of those tall curvy girls… She never thought about how Kirosh flirted with her too, that was just him being him right? Or just teasing between friends. Kadryn had no experience with romance, no idea on what meant what, so she never saw that Kirosh did treat her differently, that it was always to Kadryn’s side that he went to in the end. That all he ever did was flirt with the other girls, he never went anywhere with them or talked to them the way he did with her.

Kirosh, riding gracefully ahead of Kadryn, was thinking similar thoughts. Over the last few months that he’d known Kadryn, she’d become important to him. Yeah, he did like them tall and curvy, but something about the small, quiet barbarian that attracted him. Maybe it was because she’d offered a helping hand to him and hadn’t attached any strings. The way how she never actually demanded or expected anything from him like some girls had. She had been, at least he thought and hoped so, happy to just be with him. At first he had been happy with that. He’d gained a good friend. But lately his feelings had grown. He wasn’t sure when it’d happened, but his friend had suddenly become someone he wanted to be with for the rest of his life. He knew she could be relied on, someone who could enjoy the wild with him, that he could protect but also fight alongside with. Someone who made him happy. He sighed inwardly, he’d finally found someone, but how was he to get Kadryn to realize her feelings? He knew she liked him, it was quite obvious. He smiled, it was quite cute how she’d react to him. But his stupid friends! Why the hell did they have to tell her those stupid things? Just because all his past girlfriends had been tall and curvy didn’t mean that he didn’t like smaller women! But no, they’d said that to her, and now it seemed that she was pulling back from her feelings, trying to step on them. Exactly what he didn’t want! Maybe I should try a more direct approach? Talk with her? He sighed inwardly again, how was he supposed to do that? Kirosh wasn’t used to fumbling in romantic matters, this was new to him. Fun though, he thought, it certainly is fun being with Kadryn even if she does frustrate me in oh so many ways… Maybe if I just kiss her…

Leaving Eowyn
User Image
Kadryn stirred as the sun began to lighten the eastern sky and birds began to wake up and chirp. Sleepily she opened her eyes and turned to see if Kirosh was awake. Smiling gently, she watched his peaceful sleeping face for a while. Kirosh had curled up into a ball, burrowed in his blankets and nestled against one of the Hastars. Kadryn sat up and ran a hand along the mane of the Hastar she’d slept by. It’d been a cold freezing night, one that had left frost on the rocks and plants as well as encrusting the outer edges of the sleeping roll and blankets. Reaching down to get her bag from the bottom of her sleeping roll, she pulled out some clothes and changed without getting out of the roll. She winced as the chilly clothes touched her skin but managed to get the loose leather pants and shirt over her sleeping clothes. Sitting up, she grabbed her boots and thick leather jacket that was lined with soft kengurha fur on the inside. Kirosh stirred and looked over at her sleepily.
“Is too early to get up..” He muttered drowsily. Kadryn smiled at him.
“It’s light enough, plus I was going to try making pancakes this morning. Use up the last of the flour before it spoils.” She reached into her pack and grabbed a moderately sized crystal vial. Tossing it at him with a grin she asked, “Warm that up will you? It’s some syrup to go with the pancakes.” Kirosh chuckled as he caught it.
“For pancakes with syrup, I’ll forgive anything! It’s been really nice traveling with you Kadryn. Before I ate meat, meat, some veggies, more meat and some bread whenever I came across a town!” It was nicer for more reasons than that, but no reason to complicate things just yet! Plenty of time for that later when he’d see if Kadryn was going to act on her feelings or keep trying to smother them.

Kadryn also enjoyed traveling with Kirosh, it was nice to have company and be able to see the sights and scenes with someone. That and the crush she had on him… Maybe I can drop by the Citadel and find Smilira and talk about feelings and stuff… Smilira had more experience with guys after all, so she must know how to deal with the feelings!
“Since this is the last of the supplies, do you want to head back to a town and buy more? I’d like to at least drop by to see my family before we head to Ayr or Soudul for the other tasks.” Kadryn asked over her shoulder as she worked on the food. Kirosh, in the middle of getting dressed, paused.
“Hmm, probably a good idea. It’s getting to be winter and we don’t want to get caught out here in the mountains during a winter… I didn’t bring the right supplies for that.” He laughed as he finished dressing.
“I wouldn’t mind coming back here someday to spend a winter!” She flashed a quick smile at him before pulling the pancakes off the improvised griddle, “It’s sure to be beautiful up here during winter. But definitely only if we have the gear. I was thinking of heading to Ayr and trying that evil maze you said I need to solve. Breakfast is ready.”
Kirosh walked up and wrapped an arm about her in a quick hug, causing her heart to skip a beat,
“Thanks for cooking all the time, Kadryn,” he murmured into her ear before grabbing the plate and grinning at her. “I can’t cook! And getting food like this out here means I don’t have to go into towns as often to get decent food! And I'll hold you to that idea! We'll come back here next winter and stay here for a while!”

After they’d eaten, Kirosh and Kadryn mounted the Hastars and headed back down the mountain. With the steely light of the winter sun illuminated their frozen puffs of breath, wind whistling by and sending shivers down their backs, it was truly a reminder that winter came sooner and faster in the mountains. Kirosh, to pass the time would often tease Kadryn, though sometimes he’d sing too. Kadryn loved it when he sang. His deep rich voice was just another of the many thing she’d come to love and want to hear or see more of from Kirosh. Wandering down the mountain side, she thought over her life so far. There’d been a lot of bloodshed in it, a lot of violence. It didn’t really make her happy thinking about it. I’ve been too caught up in hunting and gaining power, and I haven’t taken the time to look around and appreciate the world. She smiled to herself, I have Kirosh to thank for that. I’ve been to places and just enjoyed looking at them like I used to when I was younger…. I should try taking up drawing again, she thought as she looked out over the misted valleys of the desert mountains.

Kirosh suddenly pulled his hastar up.
“Kadryn, look,” he whispered and shot a grin over towards her as he pointed down into one valley. She halted her Hastar right next to him and peered at where he’d pointed. She suddenly smiled as she saw what he’d seen. An Arrical! Huge and muscled thews under it’s white coat, it was a dangerous creature, but the smile was more for what was with the huge Arrical, two small cubs! They had tiny snubs where the mother had short horns, though all three had the moonstones above their eyes. The mother reared up on her hind limbs and watched them for a second before lowering herself and lumbering off into the mists. The cubs frolicked along behind her, cute and innocent.
“I’ve always liked Arricals,” Kirosh said with a grin. “They always look so majestic. Plus if you kill one and it’s body gets hit by light from the moon, they come back to life. Makes them seem just a little more special than all the others.”
“Plus they’re huge and dangerous… Admit it, you like things that are a challenge to you!”
“Of course I do!” Kirosh tilted his head as his lids lowered just a bit, “Challenges makes things… fun.” His voice was slightly husky as he said this and Kadryn had to suppress a shiver that ran through her. Damn! Why did even his voice do strange things to her?! She could hear… something in that voice… was it a promise? Or … No, she was just reading too much into it! He just liked things to be difficult is all.

Kiosh watched Kadryn for a bit before turning and starting his Hastar back down the mountain. He was grinning, oh yes. He liked a challenge, and the small quiet Kadryn was certainly a challenge! A fun one who enjoyed him as a person but who was oh so innocent! I never knew I liked innocent before… How does one deal with it without breaking that innocence?

Both of them had thoughts along a similar train as they left the Terra Expanse and wandered down the coast of Eowyn to a Ferry. Kirosh was going to take a separate one, but Kadryn growled at him and said there was no reason they couldn’t take the same ferry to Serenia.. plus if she left him there was a high chance he’d tell her to meet at yet another strange and hard to get to place like that blasted Smuggler’s Bay! He gave in with a grin and they took the Dovaa’s ferry to Serenia. Kirosh was rather amused by the glances towards their way which Kadryn studiously ignored. So she’s not afraid to be seen with me by others, he thought. Another point in her favor!

Kadryn just ignored people. Like she’d told Eanah when they’d gone shopping; so long as people didn’t fear her, she didn’t care how they viewed her! Fear of her and her berserk rage was the only thing she hated to see in another’s face. And if anyone told her that being around Oblivionites was wrong, well, she’d just punch them! Eanah and Kirosh were her friends! She wouldn’t stop being with them just cause of some stupid centuries old feud!

Coming Home
User Image
Kadryn walked into the Windy Cafe. Kirosh had declined coming in to the village, even though she’d said it was fine and that Eanah had been able to come in just fine. He’d felt too uncomfortable entering it just yet and had decided to hunt down the Wild Tribe camp here on Serenia, telling her he’d be back in a week with the winter gear they’d need to survive an extended winter stay on Ayr. Kadryn had let him go at that, she wasn’t too sure that she should take him to meet her family when she hadn’t even confronted her own feelings towards him! So she’d waved goodbye to him for a while and headed home to see her family for the first time in months. I wonder what’s happened since then?

She grinned and waved at the owner of the Cafe.
“Hey Aunt Talia! I’ve come by to visit for a bit.”
Talia rush to her and gave her a big hug, “Where’ve you been girly? We’ve missed you around here!”
“Mmm, been wandering about exploring the world mostly. Met some new people, saw new things.” She hugged her back and smiled. “Figured that I should come home and see my family!”
“You should have come back sooner!” Talia huffed and dragged her back to the kitchen. “As punishment, you’re on washing duty so that I know you don’t sneak off till we get a chance to talk!”
Kadryn laughed and shrugged her shoulders, “I’m here for a week Aunt Tal! We’ll have plenty of chances to talk! Hi Mum and Uncle!”
Tarlon looked up from the row of pans filled with food and tasty smells and grinned. “Kady! Li’l squirt, ye need to come home more often!”
Her mother Laasya put down her knives and rushed to give her daughter a hug. “Kadryn!”
“Hi mum, I see that you made good your threat to have another child!” Kadryn teased as she gave her mother a gentle squeeze. Laasya’s stomach was big with a child and she had that glowing look about her that Kadryn remembered when she’d been pregnant with her younger brother.
“We have! How long are you here for?”
“A week. I’ve got some news and stuff to do I guess. But after I finish washing dishes I’m going to need to see a healer. I ended up getting sat on by a dragon about two weeks ago and broke my wings...” Kadryn sighed as she stashed her bag and turned with a grin to look at her mother and aunts shocked expression and Tarlon's laughter.
“Sat on?”
“Yup, not sure how it happened, but the darned thing managed to break my wings. They’ve been splinted, but I’d like to get them healed properly.” They still ached even though they were stashed away currently.
Her mother frowned, a worry line creasing her forehead.
“Don’t worry Mum, I'm not that hurt. Also, I’ve actually haven’t been hunting dragons as much lately. I’ve been exploring and seeing places more than hunting. And frankly, it’s been more fun too.” Tarlon smiled at this, he’d expected it to happen eventually. Kadryn may have been a berserker, but she didn’t have the brutal drive to go out and kill things. Laasya was also happy to hear this, it meant that her daughter wasn’t going out and getting hurt as much… but still. Getting sat on by a dragon? The sheer oddness of that situation made her smile.

Kadryn spent the afternoon with her family, enjoying the cooking and chatting. In the evening she went through the same hugs and news exchanging with her father and little brother. Fallon was going to follow their father and be a smith, for which Kadryn was happy. She wasn’t sure she wanted her brother going through what she’d gone through. That evening’s dinner was loud and crowded as her aunt and uncle came over to visit. Kadryn laughed a lot as she listened to the village gossip and her little brother’s antics at school. He was much more into it than she was, but he’d turned out to be a loud prankster, which was presenting a different set of problems for her old teacher!

Kadryn loved talking with her younger brother, he was still cute and innocent to her eyes. He, in turn, looked at her with worship. His big sister was his pride, she was always out doing cool things and could do no wrong in his eyes. Nailo and Laasya both were proud of their children, though neither were going routes that most people went.

Kadryn, after they’d finished eating broached the topic of the Wild Tribe. She wondered how they’d react to her joining it.
“Wild Tribe? You mean that group of rambunctious boys who destroy taverns?” Her mother asked incredulously while Nailo and Tarlon laughed.
“They are-na like that!” Talron exclaimed. “They may be loud and some drink, but not all!”
“Tarlon’s right, dear. The tribe is mostly people who don’t fit in or can’t stand all the rules that society has.” Nailo supported his friend.
“Well, I don’t approve of them! They’ve destroyed my Cafe once when you weren't around Talon!” Talia chimed in. Laasya nodded in agreement.
“I haven’t heard very much good about it…” She looked at her daughter, “Why do you ask Kadryn?”
“Well… um…” She shifted awkwardly. Tarlon grinned and pointed at her,
“Yer joining it aren’t ye!”
“Uh huh. I’ve done one task so far…” She muttered as Talia and Laasya turned to her.
“What?”
“Why?”
“Cause I fit in there.” Kadryn shrugged as Fallon grinned at her. “There are a lot of different types of people there, and I’ve met one that made me realize I’d been too into hunting lately. After traveling a bit I’ve found out that I’ve missed just traveling to see places, not hunting alone.” She deliberately avoided mentioning Kirosh’s race and gender. No sense in asking for more questions!
He uncle chuckled and reached across to ruffle her hair. “Iffn ye found a friend and have gone back to just enjoying exploring, all the more power to ye Kaddy!”
Nailo nodded agreement as Laasya thought over it. Her baby, joining that big rowdy crowd? She didn’t want her too! But Kadryn was an adult now… And if someone had helped to get Kadryn away from hunting and all that’s dangers… well… maybe they weren’t so bad?
“Well… if you like it there Kadryn, then have fun…” She sighed and smiled acrossed to her. “You’re very happy right now and enjoying life, and I hope that this tribe keeps you that way. If they do, then I guess they might be better than the rumors say.”
Kadryn smiled across at her mother, “Thanks, Mom.”

The Last Tasks, part 1
User Image
Kadryn packed her bags, said goodbye to her family, and headed out. She was smiling as she left, it’d been good to see them again. Her room had been remade into a nursery for the incoming child, but they’d given her the attic as a room so she still had a place there. Maybe I should think about a house of my own, she thought. But I’m always traveling.. maybe after I join the Tribe, I’ll just stash my stuff with them, that could work. Not that there was a lot. Mostly just the few keepsakes, old pictures, and her cooking stuff. As she was thinking, Kirosh snuck up behind her and grabbed her a big hug from behind.

“Enjoy yourself?” He asked with a grin as Kadryn squeaked with surprise. She glared at him as a smile tugged at her mouth.
“Sure did, you great big lumox! Got my wings healed, ate tasty food, and enjoyed being with my family.”
“Mm, that’s good,” Korsh set her down but kept an arm slung over her shoulders as they kept on walking. “Pity I couldn’t eat that food,” he sighed tragically, “Here I was, left all alone out here in the woods!”
Kadryn laughed and punched him lightly, her heart still beating faster than normal at his closeness. She enjoyed the feeling of his strong arm about her shoulder and made no move to remove it.
“You were at the Tribe’s camp, plenty of company and food there!”
“Yeah, but our cooks just don’t make bread like you do… It’s not squishy enough!” He grinned as Kadryn laughed.
“Oh woe is you, you have to eat non-soft bread! I did get my supplies all refilled, so we’re set for about a month I think. If you don’t eat too much, you fatty!” She poked his flat and muscled stomach. He wasn’t fat, not in the slightest! But he did eat a lot.
“That means we can head straight off. Ary or Soudul?”
“Ayr. Lets get that evil maze over with.”
“Good! That means I bought the right gift! I figured you’d go someplace cold in winter instead of the warmer forests of Soudul.” Kirosh said as he handed her a large package.
Kadryn stopped as she took it and unwrapped it. A winter coat, a nicer and much more expensive one than her father’s second hand one’s she was currently using. It was made of leather on the outside with a thick coating of Bykadtra fur on the inside. Water and windproof, plus warm! It’d be perfect for flying in too.
“Kiorsh, you shouldn’t have!”
“Sure didn’t, but I wanted too. That ragged coat isn’t going to hold up against Ay. It may not be as cold as Aisko, but it’s still winter and it’s still freezing. And maybe I just wanted to buy you something.”
“Mm, then guess all I can say is thanks!” She grinned happily as she folded it back up happily. A gift! She’d have to go buy him one in return next time she went into a town.

Kirosh smiled as he watched her; he’d been planning how to actually approach Kadryn and see if she was willing to become more than friends. This was but one of the many things he had planned. Now I just need to keep her away from those idiots in the Tribe so they don’t keep telling her about my past flings, the jerks. He was still pissed that they’d talked to her about it. Kadryn was different from the past girls, she was not going to be a brief fling! He wanted something longer and lasting with her. Once he’d come to realize that’s what he’d wanted, he’d set out to see how and if it was possible.
He wasn’t worried about being banished. Technically he already was, he’d burned his bridges with his family and hadn’t gone back to Soudul in years. He wasn’t welcome in the city either after that brawl a few years back. The Tribe could care less about races, usually. And if there was a problem, well, people tended to just use their fists and then the Chief would step in after the aggression had been fought out and give a ruling on the issue. There were hybrids in the camps, a lot in fact. So a mix race couple wouldn’t be so out of place. Plus, he and Kadryn could always just live out in the wild. Make trips to visit friends and family when they wanted too. It would work out! He’d make it work…

Kadryn, oblivious to her companions thoughts, walked on with a smile on her face, happy about the gift. She hadn’t even come to terms with her feelings yet, much less thought on the future!
Instead, she merely concentrated on the near future, the trip to Ayr and traveling around. Everything else she’d think on later.. like her feelings. She had, after seeing her family, realized that one day she wanted that… just not now. So she’d deal with her feelings for Kirosh after the tasks were done.
Kirosh led her to his camp where he’d left his Hastars and stuff. While he packed up, Kadryn got the Hastars ready.
“We should really get a pack animal, Kirosh.” She mentioned as she finished saddling them.
“Hmm, we should… Another Hastar?”
“Sure. Or somthing that can fly with me. Like an Alkara.” She mused to herself with a smile. A flying mount would be nice.. And the big ones did live on Ayr where they were going!
“Wow, expensive tastes!” Kirosh laughed. “Since you're talking expensive beasts, I’d like an Arrical!”
“You can ride those?” Kadryn asked, her eyes widening. The semi divine Arrical that she’d seen had been large and dangerous. How could one get that and survive?
“Yeah, the Chief of the Eowyn Tribe has one as a mount. Rides it everywhere! Apparently he found a cub and raised it. So jealous!” Kirosh sighed as he packed the last bag and mounted his Hastar. “Though my Hastars are much faster than his Arrical. Just not as big or deadly!”

They talked about what mount, if any, they’d buy for a pack animal. Kirosh was all in favor of some bizarre strange creature, much to Kadryn’s amusement. She was in favor of something that could fly or a cheaper beast of burden. She could tell by the glimmer in Kirosh’s eye that he was going to try and get one of the Ayralian creatures while they were there. Guess it’ll give him something to do while I try and figure out that maze! She thought with amusement as they cantered down towards a smuggling ferry that the Tribe often used. Never knew about smuggling before meeting Kirosh. It’s like half the Wild Tribe is a smuggler on the side! Probably because they like to break rules…

It was but a moment for Kirosh to find a ferry headed to Ayr and off they went! The waves were much more choppier than they had been a few weeks ago. Winter was almost here and storms were brewing everywhere. Kadryn took a nap while Kirosh chatted with some people he knew. It took a week to reach Ayr, even with an Aryalan and Peisio Dovaa aiding the boat. Kadryn, every time she got a little sick at the motion of the boat, just hovered or flew alongside the boat, fishing sometimes and driving off creatures other times. By the time they reached shore, she was sick of fish. Kirosh loved fish, so he was fine, and very amused at her complaints about fish. They restocked again at the docks of the small smuggling village and then headed into the misty canyons of Ayr.
“I’ll take us to the maze, then it’s up to you to find the center of it. There are clues in the maze, so its not all about direction and guessing.. though that’s a big part too.” Kirosh said, causing Kadryn to sigh.
“I’m going to get lost aren’t I?”
“Guaranteed. Others I’d say have a chance, but you? You got lost even though I said keep the mountains to your left… you’re going to get lost! I have a bet with myself to see how fast it happens!”
Kadryn socked his shoulder and stuck her tongue at him. The next week they wandered through the valleys; some have buried in snow, others too windy for snow to stick. Kirosh pointed out signs of animals that had passed through, the marks that the Tribe used to lead its members to the camp, as well as showing her where to find special types of vegetation and what it was used for.

Eventually they entered a large open valley; well, open in the sense that it was a huge bowl, otherwise, it was filled with tall spired and walls.
“There’s the maze. You ready?” Kirosh asked her over the howl of a beginning snowstorm.
“No! But not like I have a choice right?” She grinned at him as the snow pelted down. I’m going to get lost so fast, she thought as the world turned white around them. And I won’t even have tracks to find my way back, the storm will obliterate it. Hopefully I’ve learned all the trail signs that Kirosh showed me on the way here. That’ll probably be the only thing that’ll help.

They staggered down into the valley and Kiorsh led her towards a small cave in the side of the wall.
“Whew, you picked a bad time to come here, Kadryn. Snow’s only going to make it worse.” Kirosh said as he shook off snow from his coat and dropped off his Hastar.
“Oh I know. Trust me,” Kadryn laughed, “but it’ll be pretty at least! Are we staying here for a bit?”
“Yeah, lets rest up and head out later. Snow probably won’t stop by then, but we’ll deal with it.”
She nodded and set about making the fire while Kirosh got a tarp up across the cave entrance to keep out wind and snow. Let’s hope I can pass this test, she thought. I’ll certainly try my best!

They stayed in the cave for a day, Kirosh just didn’t want to leave the warmth and go into the blizzard much to Kadryn’s amusement. Eventually she dragged him out into it, mostly because he insisted on snuggling, for warmth he claimed. Which was nice, on my yes! But.. awkward or too much too soon? Kadryn just wasn’t sure she was ready for that yet.

They stared at the snowed in maze. There were drifts that were as tall as Kirosh, and some of the walls of the maze were buried.
“Hey, is it allowed to go over the walls on those nice snow bridges?” Kadryn asked cheerfully.
“Ha! Don’t see why not… but do realize that going over the wall may not be the best. There’s traps cause some Orderites do try to just fly to the center.” He said with a laugh as his breath fogged up in the frozen air.

Kadryn chuckled and walked forward towards the entrance.
“How’s one supposed to see the trail signs when they’re covered in snow?”
“You don’t! Have fun Kadryn, this maze is a test that is meant to have you try your best, not something that necessarily is meant to be completed.”

The Last Tasks, part 2
User Image
Kadryn took a deep breath and walked into the snow bound maze with Kirosh following behind her. All around the snow settled in, and while the blizzard had passed, the snow still fell in light flurries. Sound was dampened and the quiet made her smile. She’d always loved the way snow covered everything in winter. Made such a pretty picture! She walked over to a half buried wall and used her mace to clear the snow.
“What’re you looking for?” Kirohs asked curiously.
“A sign or something. You said that there were trail signs in here, so I’m looking for them. If not I’ll just make my own marks on the walls.” Kadryn paused for a moment. Then looked back suspiciously at Kirosh, “The tribe won’t go behind me and copy my marks on other walls would they? Or erase them?”
Kirosh looked at her innocently, “Why on earth would accuse us of that?”
“Cause it sounds like something you and your friends would do to a poor directionly challenged girl!”
Kirosh’s only response was a chuckle, which to Kadryn meant a yes. So I’ll have to make it so they can’t copy it… She smirked; ohh yes, she knew of a way. They came to the first intersection and Kadryn gripped her mace and swung at the wall to her right. WIth a crunch, it gouged out a huge hole.
“Try getting rid or copying that sign!” She muttered with a smirk as she bounced her mace on her shoulder. She walked down the right hand path, accompanied by Kirosh’s smothered laughs.
He knew that there were several Tribe members who always followed behind a tester and would do their best to mess up any trail signs that the tester left behind. Well, that’ll be a difficult one for them to mess with! Unless they have a Gaili Dovaa. Which was possible.
Kadryn led him through the maze, always taking a right hand path and marking it. Eventually they did end up in a dead end, but she wasn’t worried. With a smirk she walked back along the snow and came to an area where there should have been a mark on the wall.. it was missing.
“Ah, so they have a Gaili dovaa,” she remarked out loud as she bent down to pick up some of the wall remanets.
“They missed some bits though!”
“So you knew they’d do that?” Kirosh asked; he knew she knew, but he wanted to hear her thoughts on why she’d done it.
“Yup. But how was the main thing I wanted to know. Would they just take another mace and smash other marks in the wall, or would they fix it. Plus look.” She pointed at the wall. “The rock is different than it was before I smashed it. The Gaili made it too clean. So now I have a new mark! Plus if they smash other holes in, I can still tell. I’ve hit enough rocks to know what my mace can do and what it leaves behind. Another mace will mark it differently. So I don’t have to worry about retracing my steps or going down places I’ve already been.” She smiled triumphantly and Kiroh gave her a grin.
“Well that will work. But the maze has so many turns. How will you figure out the right path? Trying all path’s will take too long.” Plus he knew that they had made it so that doing that method meant months of time spent in the maze.
“I know, I was going to go down the middle path first since that one had a mark near the top of the wall that looked like the trail sign for forward you showed me.” She grinned cheekily over her shoulder at Krosh as she headed back towards the beginning. Kirosh chuckled, so she had noticed that! Good.

Kadryn and Kiorsh wandered the maze, Kadryn half lost but usually managing to find a trail sign hidden deep beneath the snow. If she couldn’t find one, she smashed a hole in the wall with her mace to relieve irritation and to mark that path as a dead end. Night fell and Kirosh pitched a tent as Kadryn started up a fire and cooked dinner. It was a small tent, barely big enough for the two of them, but that was how Kiorsh wanted it, her was looking forward to cuddling.
Kadryn would have complained, but it was cold out here and there were no hastars to help keep her warm. Those they’d left with tribe members at the opening of the maze. So she bite her tongue and tried to keep her mind from wandering down certain paths. Wandering out in the cold had tired her out more than she thought, so she didn’t stay awake despite being so close to Kirosh. The warmth made her drowsy and she fell asleep almost immediately.

She woke up the next morning to find Kirosh holding her. She lay there and looked at him for several minutes, enjoying the close contact and warmth. She smiled slightly as she reached a hand up to push some hair out of his face. This is.. nice. Comfortable and not as awkward as I thought it’d be… but he’s an Oblivionite and I’m an Orderite… and his type isn’t me…. She put her head against his chest and thought about it some more. Could I, maybe, get him to like me? Is it possible for me to be with him? I’m never in the cities anyways, so it’s not like banishment will change my lifestyle. Though it may make it difficult for my family. I could keep it a secret, let family know but no one else? That could work. The Wild Tribe has hybrids in it so shouldn’t be a problem there…
She smiled to herself as she sat up. She was tired of trying to suppress her feelings. It was the first time she’d felt like this about anyone; difficult and hard to figure out what her feelings were and what to do with them. But she’d come around to realize that she should at least try instead of burying her emotions. It was like her berserk side. She nibbled her lip as she looked around, should she? There wasn’t a sound outside, just the quiet of a snowy dawn. She bent and quickly kissed Kirosh’s cheek before grabbing her boots and jacket.
She left the tent with a deep purple blush staining her cheeks, so she didn’t notice a smirk on Kirosh’s face. He had been dozing, after waking up and not wanting to move fro his nice warm snuggling position. He sat up with a grin on his face and fist pumped the air. She must have thought about her feelings and stopped ignoring them or something otherwise why else would she have given him a kiss? While Kadryn was out, he grabbed his clothes and quickly changed into them. He stepped out of the tent right as she was coming towards it.
“Morning,” He said with a saucy grin as she squeaked and blushed.
“M-morning.” Kadryn said as her heart pounded. Had he been awake… ?
Kirosh hummed as he cleared out some snow and started a fire for breakfast while Kadryn quickly changed into a new set of winter clothes.

The rest of the day was much like yesterday, though Kirosh kept grinning and teasing her. It made the day go by much faster and Kadryn began to spot the trail signs a bit more often than she had.
“Oh look, they actually put it in a place you can see for once! “ She said pointing at one as she glared at it. “Now if only they did that for the rest so I wouldn’t have to go digging in the snow!”
Kirosh’s only response was a laugh as he snacked on a strip of smoked meat.
The walls of the maze began to get taller and they’d gotten into the bowl of the hidden valley. The snow was much deeper here and they were in the trapped areas now. Hopefully she can keep spotting the traps or dodging them. And at least we’re on the right track.

The sun was beginning to set, but Kadryn didn’t want to stop. She knew they were getting to the end and didn’t want to give the tribe extra time to trap anything. Like that evil pit trap I almost triggered, or those trip wires that launched huge piles of snow. Or the one that almost got her with half frozen water. Harmless traps meant to irritate or slow one down.
“It’s getting close to nightfall, Kadryn. Are you sure you wish to continue?”
“Positive. If I give them an extra night to set up traps, it’ll take an entire day to get around the traps they set! And I’m certain we’re close! If it’s light you’re worried about.” She gripped her mace and sent a thread of her power out into it, causing it to glow softly with a pale blue light. It was a spell her father had taught her. She didn’t have a lot of power, but enough to defend her self and cast small light spells. Kirosh smiled and waved her on. Pitty, I was looking forward to more snuggling, he thought with a smirk.

Their pace slowed, as Kadryn made sure that the path she took was indeed marked. They’d put up some random trail signs to confuse her, but she managed to find the correct path after a few dead ends. It was getting close to midnight when Kadryn sighed and turned to Kirosh. “Oh alright. We can stop now. I’m a bit too cldl and tired to continue on.”
Kirosh merely walked over and threw an arm around her shoulder s he grinned, “Are you sure about that?”
Kadryn looked at him and then at the two paths before her. His tone meant they were near... right? She felt him giver her a slight tug towards the right and looked up at him in the dim light of her glowing mace. He smiled and cocked an eyebrow at her.
Curious as to why he was so amused, she walked down the right path and turned a corner. Before her was a round walled off area with a small round house in it. She buried her face into her hands as she heard Kirosh laugh.
“I was going to stop.. right here! Just a few steps from the end…”
“You were! We can rest here, tomorrow I’ll show you the fast way out.”
Kirosh looked up and saw some of the Tribe members perched on the tall spires that made up the wall’s supports. He grinned and waved at them before heading into the warm house.

Kadryn was looking at the rough table that held a variety of strange items. But what had really caught her eye was a small orb that was nestled in some leaves.
“What’s this? It feels.. alive.” She said as she picked it up. SHe could feel warmth and a strange pulsing beat coming from it.
“That.. uh…” Kirosh looked at it. “That’s not one of the items you have to bring back. Though you can I guess since it’s here. Normally we have items that you keep and can be useful.” Which was true, all other things on the table were potions, small magic items, or odd looking weapons.
“Hm, I like it, so I’ll keep it.” Kadryn smiled gently and cradled the strange eggplant object in her hands.

Kirosh smiled and leaned over towards her. He reached out a hand to cradle the side of her face and turn her towards him. Feeling the heat of her blush against his rough palm, his lips curved upwards into a soft smile.

“Congrats Kadryn, you finished the second task,” He said in a soft voice a he leaned in and kissed her gently on the lips. He pulled back and flashed her a warm grin as she stared at him, eyes wide and lips parted slightly in shock.

“Uh, ah….um..” Kadryn felt heat flash across her face. He kissed her! Well, she kissed him earlier, but that was on the cheek! This was.. that was…Her mind stumbled and fumbled around.
Kirosh laughed and caressed her face again, “You’re just too cute, Kadryn.” He pulled her into a hug and nuzzled the side of her neck. He probably should wait and move slower, but he was tired of waiting. He wanted her to know his feelings, wanted her, wanted to be more than friends.

Kadryn felt hot, unsure, happy… so many different things all at once. When he hugged her she leaned into his warm embrace.
“Um.. but.. Aren’t.. I mean… They said I wasn’t your type?” She said in a wobbly voice that was slightly husky, her heart beating too fast. Kirosh growled.
“Ignore them. They lie.” He sighed and pulled back slightly, looking her in the eye, “Yes, I’ve had a lot of tall girls in my past Kadryn. But that’s where they are. The past. They never went traveling with me. You did. They never fought by my side. You have. Size doesn’t mean a lot to me Kadryn. I love you for more than just your looks. Though I do like the short package you are. I love the way you laugh with me, how I can talk with you, travel places with you, be with you.”
Kadryn looked at him with wide eyes and reached up with a slightly trembling hand to caress his face. “You mean all that? You .. love me?”
“Yes. Have for a while, but wasn’t sure how to approach you. Cute and innocent as you are, I didn’t want to scare you off. And if you weren’t interested, well. I wanted to at least stay by your side.” He leaned into her hand and smiled.
“I love you too.” She whispered right before he kissed her again, longer, hotter, harder than the first one. Kissing... is nice. Why did I hold back? Why haven’t I tried this before?

Then after we were leaving, we got ambushed by Rajsha! Killed two before the rest of the pack showed up so we left. No sense in trying to kill an entire pack when the Hastars might get hurt!

Uncle vs Kirosh
User Image

Tarlo, after watching Kirosh and Kadryn that evening far more than he watched the meteorite shower, slung a brawny arm about Koirosh’s shoulders with a toothy grin.

“Yer a nice helper. Good strong boy. Pity ye canna cook, but Ah can take care of that. Talia, my love, what sa ye tah kidnapping this nice friend of Kadryn’s and taking ‘em back with us?” He gave his wife a wink. They could see which way the wind blew even if Laasya was blind to it.
Talia grinned as she finished packing up the cooking supplies, "Sounds like a wonderful idea Tarlon! He can help you in the kitchen while Lasya gets some time off to take care of her baby… plus if we bring him with us Kadryn will come too right? And she can spend time with her wayward wandering daughter.”

“Mah thoughts exactly,” Tarlon and Talia turned grinning eyes to a suddenly nervous Kirosh.

“Uh… might not be best…” Kirosh tried to say before Nailo, who’d been watching this with a grin, chimed in.

“Why not. We’ve had a Khehora come over and eat dinner at the Café. So I don’t s why we can’t keep him safe. Plus I’m sure Kadryn would love to have you over.” He too could see the signs. Laasya, carrying her newborn toddler came over and looked about in confusion.

“Dear, why are Tarlon and Talia looking so predatory?” The two conspirators snickered and Talia came over to throw an arm over Laasya’s shoulder.
“We were just thinking it’d be good to ring Kadryn’s friend back with us! Let him do the heavy lifting and dish washing while you stay home and take care of the baby. And if he’s there, Kadryn will be there and maybe we’ll get to see her for more than a few days!”

“Oh that sounds lovely!”
Laasya, innocent to what was going on, cast a thankful glance towards Kirosh. “I could certainly use the rest and extra time. Thank you.” She was wary about him, but he was Kadryn’s friend… and Tarlon and Nailo would both be there to make sure nothing bad happened so to her, this was a nice suggestion. Nailo, smothering a laugh and grin, walked over; “Why don’t we head back, with Kadryn and Kirosh here to help, we can get the kids back to the ferry and bedded down. Right Kadryn?” He winked at Kadryn who came over carrying a basket and leading a yawning Fallon.
“Uh, sure?” She said hesitantly. Lasya and Nailo collected Fallon and flew up into the air to travel a slightly safer way to the ferry.
Once gone, Talia and Tarlon started snickering as Kirosh, with a put upon expression, looked pitifully at Kadryn. “You fiend! You abandoned me to these two and I got suckered into being a kitchen slave!”
Tarlon, chortoling, slapped Kirosh heavily on the back. “Ahh, dinna fret yerself! Ah won’t be too mean to ya.”
Besides, what we said was all true! Plus, you get time with Kadryn’s family… I would think someone who has… oh, I don’t know, a romantic interest in our little girl, would want to get to know her family!” Talia said archly as Kadryn blushed furiously.
“Is….was it that obvious?” She asked as she tired to control her blushes.”
“Well, Ah say it. Yon lad isnna being too subtle about it.” Tarlon said dryly as he and Kirosh finished packing up the last of the stall.
“Why should I hide what I feel?” Kirosh asked, one eye brow cocked.
“Dinna say it was a bad thing. Just obvious. Let her Ma meet ya and get tah kno ye lad before you be too obvious bout it.”
Kadryn sighed and nodded. “Ma’s rather sheltered isn’t she?”
“I'll say. But she’s sweet so once she gets to know you I don’t think there’ll be too much of an issue in the house. The rest of the world though.” Talia shrugged. Kirosh and Kadryn both sighed and nodded. They knew; mixing races was not the most accepted thing.

"It won't be bad. Ye can also learn tah cook! Though Ah'll just use ye as a Dish washer fer the most part!" Tarlon cackled.

Baking Calming Cookies

Kadryn, after failing those four times to even catch a Borgnah, went back home to sleep and think on what she could do. Fluttering in through the open window into her attic room, her eyes fell upon the bag stuffed full of things she’d bought at the star fall festival. She hadn’t really done anything with those books she’d found…
Picking up the faded recipe book, she leafed through, pausing when she notice the funny names of Magic Stew and Calming Cookies. She read them more carefully and grinned. Just what she needed! These were meant to help cam animals down! Wonder what else is in this book or has been made elsewhere….
She pulled out the cauldron with its stash of items in them that she’d bought and carefully went through them. Could she make either of these things? She found enough to make one of the Calming Cookie batches, but no Babosa slime for the stew.
“Pity, that one seems to be more effective from the notes in here.” She muttered to herself. Shrugging, she gathered up her supplies and wandered downstairs to take over the family kitchen. Her parents were at work and her brother learning the Smithing trade, so she had it all to herself.

Putting on an apron, she ground up the eggs and herbs into a gooey mess before cleaning her hands and starting to make some cookies. What type should she make? It wasn’t for people consumption, but that didn’t mean she was going to make something disgusting! Maybe sugar cookies, something simple and sweet with no chocolate. Wasn’t chocolate bad for some animals? I’ll have to go ask someone later she thought as she got out the ingredients and began to measure and mix her cookies. She made a large batch, double what she normally made. Half would be for this recipe the other would be for her family to eat. Humming happily as she stirred vigorously, she let her mind wander a bit. Her parents didn’t seem to mind Kirosh. But what would they think when she told them he was more than a friend? They were very accepting and quite open minded, but this was important. Dating, much less sleeping with or marrying, an Oblivionite was just not done! Banishment worthy! Banishment wouldn’t really bother her too much. After all, she could just go live with the Wild Tribe... but what of her family? What would happen to them? Would they support her or not? Her uncle (and Aunt cause Uncle never kept secrets from Talia) obviously approved and didn’t care. But her mother… Kadryn sighed. She knew her father wouldn’t mind too much. Maybe Mother will just be happy that I noticed a guy at last and won’t be unhappy? She shook her head and sighed. Bothersome! Why did falling in love have to have so many bothersome consequences!

She separated the cookies and put the normal ones in to bake while she mixed the odd goo into the dough, wrinkling her nose at the odd slimy feeling.
“I hope those Borgnah’s like these…”

One Last Orb Delivery
User ImageLoss: 1 Gaili Orb, 6 Aiskalan, 3 Peisio, 3 Firani, 1 Kiandri, 1 Ayrala (15 orbs)

Kadryn stretched and yawned. What should I do today, she thought drowsily as the early dawn light began to filter into her room. Not in the mood to go Brognah hunting. Though I do have those cookies that should be helpful… maybe I should go see if Kirosh wants to help me find a Babosa so I can gather its slime for that Magic Soup recipe that I have. She sighed and rolled around in bed. She didn’t want to do those. She just wanted to laze about, be with her family and Kirosh. Her eyes fell upon her battered bag. Oh, I should go and report into Aevah. It’s been a while and I should at least turn in those orbs. Maybe I can find Smilira! She smiled and rolled out of bed. Going through her closet, she found a clean pair of unpatched or stained clothes. She held it out, it was from when she and Eanah had gone shopping and she’d left this set behind so that there’d be one good set at home.
Humming happily at the thought of seeing her old friend again (even if it did mean venturing back into the big noisy smelly city) she put on the clothes and paused. Maybe I should wear something to make it... nicer? This was, after all, to be her final time reporting in on her progress. She nibbled her bottom lip, not like I have anything to make me fancy though! She thought with a grin as she shrugged into a white shirt and fitted a leather vest over it. All I have are some decent hard working clothes! She ran a brush through her wavy locks.
She pulled out her bag and looked inside. What orbs should she turn in?
Her eyes wandered over the Diabi and Aeduan orb, she hadn’t fought a dragon for them so not those. The Gaili orb definitely, some of the Firani, Aisko, and Peiso as well as a Kiadnri and Ayrala should be good enough proof I’ve grown and have gotten strong enough right?
Knowing her family would be resting still (the baby kept them up late) she flew out of her window, thankful it was large enough she could slip out and then unfurl her wings on the ledge. She stopped by the Café to say hi to Kirosh. He was barely awake, much to her amusement. Bending over she kissed him gently.
“I’m off to the capital, gotta go turn in a batch of orbs for proof of progress. I’ll be back by the evening.” Kirosh slipped an arm about her shoulder and pulled her into a deeper kiss. Pulling back breathless and blushing, Kadryn smiled down at the man she’d come to love.
“Bring me back a souvenir then, sweetling.” Kirosh said as he caressed her face, a soft smile on his lips.
“Of course.” She grinned and kissed him again before leaving.
The trip there was quiet, the early morning was chilly, still winter though the sun quickly warmed the sky up. Spring’s coming soon, she thought happily.

About midday she finally reached the city. Rather than landing and walking in, she decided to just get this over with and flew straight for the Citadel. Plus if she flew in, less chance of meeting someone from that disastrous accident where she went berserk on that idiot boy. Landing on an ouside walkway, she furled her wings and strode on into the tower. She remembered this one, it was where she’d always come to deliver the orbs. So I should find Aevah here or someone who knows where she is. Kadryn’s luck was in, as she wandered into the tower, she saw Aevah leaving the room. The leader of her people smiled as she saw Kadryn enter.
“Well look who finally showed back up. And all grown up too!”
Kadryn grinned back and held out the sack where she’d stashed all the orbs.
“Got fifteen of them for you this time! A range of orbs from all sorts of dragons.”
Aevah took the bag and looked inside. She humed happily under her breath. “A good haul indeed. And definite proof you have grown and are now strong enough for the title Master. Congratulations Kadryn.”
Kadryn bowed slightly, “Thanks. Do you know if Smil is in?”
Aevah chuckled, “She left to go hunting. While not as avid a hunter as you, she does enjoy it.”
“AH, thanks.” Kadryn waved good bye and left once more. Cities made her nervous and now that she’d done her task, she wanted to leave!
