Thomas was abandoned at a young age, having to learn his wit and charm on the streets of- just kidding! That might be the story he'd spin to get some 'awww's, but the truth is far less dramatic. It sounds odd, but Tom would actually prefer he'd been hated for his mutations, cast aside for being different. Instead he was lovingly raised in the swirling sands, his parents cherishing the fact that their child even survived his awakening. As is often the case of children in loving families, Tom grew restless and rebellious. This was mostly seen as simple, youthful activity... until the day he left. He was only a teenager when he exclaimed he wanted nothing to do with his family or the 'oppressive' world he lived in. His parents realised too late how far their son had grown disenchanted with his life, although few could predict such a rash move. Having heard stories of the vast city of Asphodel, the young naga saw the opportunity of a lifetime. Catching the first cart to the city he could, he was on his way to a new life.
Alone in a big city, Tom had no choice but work on his natural charm and was eager to slither into every dark alley and dingy club. Eventually even this became dull to the young mutant, his many eyes always focused on something new. Although he obviously hadn't graduated the Asphodel Academy, Tom had received an impressive education before he left. Wanting to expand his horizons, he decided to enrol on community college. Most of the courses seemed dull to him, but one particularly drew on his natural sense of taste and sleight of hand - cooking. He may have focused a bit too much on flashiness and appearances, but no one could deny his excellent and unique combination of flavours. Despite a few too many late nights on the town, Tom graduated from community college as a certified chef. Since then, he has worked in many different establishments, never bothering to stay in one place for too long. Currently he serves as a pastry chef in a small cafe in the city, but for how long is anyone's guess.

as someone who'd rather spend his time cooking or clubbing than sitting at home training a familiar, a gryftoo is perfect for tom. he might not be the smartest, quickest or cutest faimilar around, but cinnamon is full of love and hilarious moments. tom is happy to feed him scraps while he cooks and laugh at the interactions between the gryftoo and the vastly more intelligent fennekit. sure, cinnamon isn't perfect, but that's what makes him perfect for a mutant like tom.

chili wandered to tom's stall during the winter celebrations and never seemed to want to leave. since tom is a sociable nightmare, he was more than happy to take home the communicative fennekit. chili seems more relaxed and less destructive than most fennekits and seems to reserve her pranks for cinnamon. tom's more than happy with this and finds endless entertainment watching the two - chili will try to aggravate cinnamon with her pranks and behaviour but the gryftoo is just too oblivious to respond, resulting in a frustrated chili; shenanigans often ensue.

during his trip to his homeland, thomas particularly enjoyed the cruise. the luxury and being waited upon was an entirely new experience to tom and he spent most of his time lounging on the sun deck. a result of this activity was his spotting of a particularly prissy fennekit. amused by her aloof behaviour, tom decided to take the familiar home with him. often playfully called 'princess' by her owner, rosemary stands aloof from his other familiars, preferring to destroy anything in his house that aren't to her tastes. tom puts up with the behaviour because he finds it amusing, but the result is an incredibly untrained fennekit.

thomas found tumeric in the wasteland ruins where the coatl seemed particularly interested in the naga's long tail. perhaps it was because he was a wild creature who wasn't used to nagas or any other species, tumeric was fascinated by the tour group and seemed impossible to leave behind. the coatl quickly became affectionate towards his new owner, constantly demanding attention. fortunately, tom is able to provide it with a few flicks of his rattle and letting the clever familiar help around the kitchen. people seem impressed when they see the coatl helping cut up ingredients or fetch items from the pantry, but the truth is tom had never been one to bother training his familiars; tumeric just seems to naturally take to the chef's life.
princess thomas took a shine to princess ever since she began working in the same cafe as him. knowing she thought she was the queen of the world, thomas took delight in teasing her and bossing her around. while this created rather tense problems at first, the bickering turned into light flirting and an interesting friendship. the two often enjoy to go out clubbing and have become quite close during their time together. despite the rather flirtatious connotations of their relationship, neither have yet suggested anything serious so far.

Princess was raised by a single father who doted on the young nixie, satisfying every whim ever since she was an infant. There was nothing too good for his little princess, and his high-paying district manager job paid for any luxury she may have desired. The inevitable trade-off was a lack of time the two could spend together due to his demanding work, however whenever he was home all of his attention would be on Princess. As a result, Princess grew incredibly attached to her father, looking forward to any time they could spend together and pining for him when he was gone. Unsurprisingly due to her spoiled treatment, Princess grew to expect whatever she desired and was known for throwing a tantrum if anything wasn't perfect in her eyes. As her father always let her take charge when they played together, she grew incredibly bossy towards her nannies and her father's other employees. Of course, none of them could say a word against her; it could be nothing but compliments for the boss's darling princess.
Unfortunately, this attitude stayed with Princess as she began to attend the academy and affected her attitude to her peers and even her teachers. During her first few years as a freshling, the young nixie was shocked to find everyone didn't adore her - after all, her father had always told her she was the most perfect, precious person in the world. Sick of not getting the attention she deserved, she began to present herself to others the same way she did towards her father; entirely innocent and charming. After this shift in attitude she became instantly popular, her beauty and confidence attracted many superficial friends whom Princess was delighted to surround herself with. Realising she gained more attention by being sweet she began to perfect her hobby of baking, often bringing cupcakes and other desserts into class to share with her peers. By the time she graduated, Princess was very popular indeed, although she never lost her arrogant and domineering attitude.
Not used to hard work, Princess was shocked when her father suggested she attend a college. He had been so proud of her good grades, not realising most of them came simply from charming the teachers rather than putting in any amount of effort - the only field she had actually excelled in was her baking. To her horror, Princess' father suggested she get a part-time job while she studied to gain some independence. She was happy to simply live the spoiled life of a rich child but her father practically insisted she did something with herself, so she reluctantly charmed her way into a job as a barista in an uptown bakery. Princess now works fairly regularly as she studies pâtisserie at community college, surprisingly finding some enjoyment from doing things herself. Due to one particularly naughty coworker named Thomas, Princess has started to enjoy going out to clubs to throw away her money on expensive cocktails, loving the superficial atmosphere and quick validation she can get from the people around her.

thomas princess works with thomas in the same cafe, and they've become close while working together. they're often caught playfully flirting and spend most weekends out clubbing together. some of their coworkers are surprised at their friendship as both thomas and princess have domineering personalities, but it seems they've found a comfortable dynamic together. whether anything more will come of their friendship remains to be seen.

Papillon's family was one of the few that delighted at the idea of opening up the barrier to the outside world. Fortunately for them, their family was incredibly large and Papillon's many cousins were spread throughout the kumiho villages around the forest, allowing them to have quite a bit of influence. Papillon was the middle of three direct siblings, but his ancestors had always been incredibly family-focused so relatives - both close and distant - helped raise him and were raised with him. Papillon's family's estate was always bustling with activity and the young kumiho revelled in the socialisation, particularly enjoying spending time with all the young children and their fun games. Papillon's mother often expressed how proud she was at his caring nature and ability to look after the young ones, providing quite a bit of a relief for the adults.
When the barrier was opened, the excitable Papillon immediately volunteered to leave the forest to investigate the world of Below on behalf of his family. Of course, being the large family it was, dozens of his aunts, uncles and cousins were also eager to go, meaning the young kumiho would have plenty of support should he want it during his travels. Having always been one to enjoy crowds and being surrounded by people, Papillon was drawn to the bustling demon capital of Asphodel. His family had sent him with a small fortune - a family as large as his tended to accumulate wealth - and he was able to rent out a relatively large apartment in the outskirts of the city. Some of the cousins that had come with him asked why he needed such a large space and he shocked them with his plans; he was going to open a daycare in Asphodel, run straight out of his apartment.
It didn't take long for Papillon to set up the space for a child-friendly daycare centre in his home, the only difficulty was attracting 'clients'. He got mixed responses due to his history; while some parents were encouraging of their children to learn about the kumiho, there were others who were hesitant to leave their children with a race they knew nothing about. Fortunately his cheerful, friendly attitude convinced most parents that their children would be in good hands with the kumiho. Papillon has only been in Asphodel for a few years but has already established a relatively successful business, loving every day he spends playing with the kids and helping them with their problems, both school-related and their social issues. Still, it felt like something was missing in his life, and it wasn't until he was playing with the children one day he realised what it was; a child of his own.
Papillon hadn't found a partner during his time in Below and had no real interest in doing so - he didn't want to get into a committed relationship just to imbue a stone - and so he had a hesitant fling with a hallowed named Julian. He had enjoyed Julian's company well enough and was happy to have him be the other source of magic for his child. While it was hard for Papillon to even let someone else walk away with a stone he had imbued, he immediately cherished the stone he had kept - Abella. He constantly assured her she was the most precious thing in the world and, to him, this was entirely true. He poured all of his attention into her and was delighted to bring him into his 'workplace' so she could play with the other children. He never noticed any flaws in his daughter and was thrilled when she showed excellence in her schooling, even picking up the hobby of the violin.
Papillon wants nothing more than to have Abella be his darling daughter forever, and only time will tell how well he adjusts to her growing into a young adult.

abella the child papillon chose to raise from his imbuing with julian, he is completely enamoured with abella. papillon believes his daughter to be the most intelligent, beautiful and charming individual to ever exist, and he frequently tells her so. he pours so much love and affection onto her that he is blind to her faults and to her constant desire to prove her worth to him. papillon cherishes abella more than anything else in his life and will undoubtedly find it difficult to watch her grow and, eventually, become her own woman. instead he focuses on the present, spending as much time with her as possible, constantly spoiling her with gifts and treats.
marcellus abella's sibling, marcellus has been raised by julian. papillon also loves his other child, but he certainly hasn't formed as strong a relationship with marcellus as he has with his daughter. he gets to see his other child frequently, both because he insisted on this and because julian leaves marcellus at his daycare when he's at work. the kumiho loves this time they can spend together and hopes his relationship with marcellus grows stronger as they grow older.

Despite not being hallowed, Desdemona was considered cursed by some people in her village due to her skeletal markings. Her loving parents assured her this wasn't the case, but it negatively impacted the young naga's self-esteem, leaving her self-conscious and far less sympathetic to those around her. Concerned with the isolated nature of their daughter, Desdemon's parents made the difficult decision of sending her away from the desert to Asphodel to study at the academy; they had heard there were far more 'interesting' individuals there, including hallowed and hybrids. Desdemona was shocked that her parents were sending away and, despite their assurances, this simply further solidified her lack of self-worth - even her own parents wanted her gone.
Scared to put herself out there, Desdemona turned inward for entertainment and companionship. She became obsessed with literature and media, especially loving the sense of intelligence she felt when solving mysteries in crime novels. Not one to seek thrills in social environments, she found them in horror movies and quickly became obsessed with the goth scene; for once her skeletal markings helped her fit in rather than stand out. Desdemona was delighted when she was even able to make a few friends who shared her interests and can occasionally find worth in her knowledge of horror films and what went into making them.
Currently, Desdemona has no idea what she wants to do when she grows older, believing that her hobbies could never lead to a career and, in her eyes, she holds no value outside of them.
