Seven o'clock rolled around like it always did every evening. Johnathan Miller was busy at the house he shared with Alex and Lily, washing dishes and vaccuuming the downstairs. He had the television on for comfort and company only half-listening to the news. The vaccuum's squealing as it coursed through the plush carpet did much to drown out the sound. The talking head on the screen was probably praddling about the same things he always did - the weather, traffic updates, the mundane sorts of things that people tend to tune out when at home. They only peripherally listen. This was exactly what Johnathan was doing when the latest headline flashed across the screen, prompting the man on the news to cut off his report about risin gas prices to immediately begin on this new tidbit of information. Johnny was in the kitchen, putting away the dishes when he heard it.
"...this afternoon, a woman was shot leaving her downtown office building with her son. Witnesses say the attacker..."
Johnny nearly dropped a dish. Didn't Alex say he was going downtown to meet his mother for lunch or something? Nearly tripping over himself, the boy dashed into the living room just in time to see on-scene footage of a very familiar blonde boy and an ambulance. The boy with snow blue hair stopped and felt his body go numb. This couldn't be real, could it? There would be no way someone would want to harm Alex's mother, or Alex himself! What did either of them do to deserve something like this? This had to be a joke. Right?
"...police could not identify the suspect at this time and are currently gathering witness statements. The mother is being rushed to local hospitals where police say she is currently in critical condition. The boy with her, identified as her son, appears to be unharmed. Channel Six will report more on this story as details come in. Back to you, Max."
The television flashed back to the talking head on earlier who moved on from the story as if nothing at all had happened. Johnny felt his knees buckle and he scrambled for the phone hanging on the wall in the kitchen. He had to find out if this was right! Was this real? No, Alex would be fine. Alex and his mother were at that fancy French restaurant Alex always talked about, getting fried snails or whatever fancy things they ate at places like that. His mother was fine, happy as can be. None of this was real. None of it.
Johnny knew how much Alex's mother meant to him. The blonde would talk about her so fondly and often - they had a very close bond. In the haze of panic, Johnny had forgotten the last three digits of Alex's cell number and his hands shook. He nearly dropped the phone and misdialed twice before his brain unclouded long enough for him to tap out the number on the keypad. Shaking, the boy held the phone to his ear and sank onto his legs on the kitchen floor. And he waited.
And waited.
And no one answered.
