It was late at night judging by the position of the moon in the sky, the way its silver light bounced from building to building in the clear winter sky. Bazzite was perched on the edge of an electronics store like a black gargoyle, wrapped up in his Negaverse-issue hooded jacket. His elbows rested on his knees and for the moment, he did nothing but watch his breath fog in the air. There weren't any signals nearby and his mind was more occupied with a particular white-and-green senshi he'd nearly ripped the starseed from.

While Bazzite had spoken to Aurora and made a solemn promise never to repeat that night again, despite any orders from higher-ups, he still wanted to bridge the gap between himself and Pandora. Apologize. Explain that it was an accident - he didn't mean to. Sure, he wanted to end the war as much as the next guy but killing? Couldn't it be done without killing?

And there he felt it, an Order signal flared up like a beacon somewhere off in the distance and Bazzite was off to trail it. The signal ranked lower than he did which meant he had a good chance of finding Pandora again. It wasn't like he knew all that many base level senshi anyway. Maybe she powered up? Bazzite had no way of knowing who was who based on the energy signature so he had to simply hope it was Pandora.

When he reached the park and couldn't see the person who bore the signal, Bazzite perched himself in a tree and waited.

To say that Pandora's heart wasn't in it anymore would have been a vast understatement.

However, protecting civilians had always been in her blood, and she would hold true to that until the day she'd died. It had been the reason for the strong flare of power--Pandora hadn't wanted to power up, hadn't wanted to do anything except walk back home.

A few yards away, thrown into a bush, were the remnants of her school bags. One of the late-night studiers had been cutting through the park to get to the main road. Liberty figured they must have been aiming to order a taxi, but she'd seen the flash of dark, abnormal matter and that had been enough.

The civilian had never known they could have become a smear of blood in the park that made another small paragraph in the local city newspaper.

Now, Pandora was breathing heavily, eyes watching where a youma had been only moments earlier. It had been so sudden, Pandora had not yet come to terms with reality. As the adrenaline began to subside, she felt the tickle of chaos move up her spine.

Could she just power down and hope she wasn't seen? The signature was close; too close. Feeling the bile in her throat, Pandora carefully moved away from her things and attempted to pinpoint the source. If she were luckily, she could find a way around it without encountering the individual, power down somewhere isolated, and pretend she'd never felt the signature at all.

It was Pandora!

Bazzite smiled to himself, at his success in finding her. But she looked downright terrified and his brow furrowed. He stayed out of sight initially in order to not sneak up on her and scare the daylights out of her but clearly his plan was having the opposite effect. Frowning to himself, Bazzite tried to decide between jumping down and reintroducing himself or staying in place and announcing his presence.

The latter seemed like the better idea.

"Umm... hi!" he hazarded initially, unsure of how to announce himself without sounding like an utter tool. "Uh... this is Bazzi. Can I... come over there? I didn't mean to scare you. I just kinda... wanted to stay outta the way, you know? Um... is that okay? Can I come down or should I just stay here? I mean I can stay here if you want! I guess."

Pandora whirled on the sound like it was Death itself. Her pulse skyrocketed, and her eyes scanned the area where she'd heard the voice. It took the second um for Pandora to steer her eyes towards the trees.

So, she stared, dumbfounded and paralyzed with shock. Being this jumpy could not have been healthy; she had more pent up energy than she thought.

Bazzi? There was no forgetting that name. Why would she want to see him of all people? Though, he was alive, and that was. . . well, it was something, and Pandora could not place how she felt about it.

"No," she answered quickly. There wasn't any need for him to stay in the tree. She'd rather have in the open, where she could see him.

"Come down."

What did he want? Pandora's eyes never left the tree, not until he'd started to make his way down it, and then they never left him. "You're alone?" She didn't feel anymore members of Chaos, but there were a lot about the faction that she simply didn't know.

"...sorry for scarin' you. I didn't mean to."

After a few moments, Bazzite intentionally rustled the branches around him to give Pandora a bit of warning before he jumped from his position high up in the tree. The little ninja landed at its base and stayed there, finding a few slivers of moonlight lit him up enough for the senshi to tell where he was. The captain looked nervous, uneasy. He wasn't sure what he was doing but knew it needed to be done.

"Umm... yeah, I'm alone. Nobody else here I can sense anyway." He scratched the back of his head, looking this way and that over his shoulders. "I mean, I didn't ask anybody to come here with me. I kinda... needed to do this on my one, you know?"

The boy swallowed the lump in his throat that had been sitting there for hours. "Um... so anyway, I uh... wanted to apologize." The admission may have come as a shock to Pandora, given that the entirety of the mission statement Chaos warriors were given was to eliminate the senshi threat and save the planet. Bazzite wholeheartedly believed in his cause, just not necessarily the methods used. "I.. didn't know about the whole starseed thing until... that night. An' I talked to a senshi friend of mine an'... an' I made a promise I wanted to tell you about."

He took one, small step forward. "Cuz... ever since then I can't sleep too well. I told 'Rora... nah, I promised 'Rora I wouldn't take anybody's starseed ever. An' I mean it. So... sorry. About that night."

Pandora didn't know. What exactly was he doing here? The distrust was written all over her face. Was she supposed to pity him? There was too much self-hate written all over that moment for her to do that. She wanted him to spit out what he was going to say, instead of rambling on.

Then, when he did, Pandora wished he'd never opened his mouth at all. It seemed she was determine to feel anger, regret, and distaste no matter what. This, she supposed, was the feeling that created wars. Well, they were in one weren't they?

The apology didn't matter to her, but the promise did. The Senshi continued to say nothing, though her stance loosened and she quieted. Pandora forced her fists to unclench and her breathing to even. If he wanted someone to console his ego, that wasn't going to be her, not tonight. Maybe in a few weeks.

She had other anger now. "I fought another one of you," she said, instead, taking the conversation elsewhere. "Named Aurora." It had popped into her brain immediately, and so she'd said it.

"She told me you had to reach a quota." Pandora took the moment to bite her tongue. She needed to not get angry over this. This was important all over again. "What happens if you don't reach quota, Bazzi?"

These were questions she never really asked Maia. The funny thing was, she didn't expect the truth from the Senshi. Or rather, she didn't expect the truth not to be distorted by bias.

Bazzite blinked in confusion. "You fought 'Rora? Why? She's real nice. I don't think she could hurt a fly, really. She's real nice to me, anyway. I like her." Sure, they were on opposite sides of the war but Virtus was a pacifist enough. Surely nobody would pick on Aurora or Virtus unless there was a damned good reason. Right? "She's the one I made the promise to an' I meant it. I don't wanna kill anybody."

Aurora was partially right as far as Bazzite knew - there used to be quotas but now he wasn't so sure anymore with the branch division the Negaverse was going through right now. "Um... I dunno." he tilted his head, admitting his lack of knowledge with all honesty. "I mean, before, if we didn't reach our energy quota or somethin'.... real bad stuff happened. I only heard about it cuz I got scared and worked real hard so the real bad stuff didn't happen to me. I dunno anymore though. I'll have to ask Beni."

Good grief, Bazzite thought it would be best to warn Pandora about Benitoite. "Beni's my General. He's a real nice guy but he really don't like senshi. He has a big staff, wears blue-n-black. Long cape. Blonde hair. If you see him, you should go. I... don't want anything to happen to you."

He scratched the back of his head looking obviously nervous. Eyes darted around. "Jus'... don't tell anybody I told you, 'kay?"

Whoever this 'Beni' was, Pandora really didn't like him. Bazzite was always asking him questions, Maia said he was ruthless. There was no doubt in her redheaded skull that Beni was exactly the kind of chaos that evil was made out of.

"Of course he doesn't," Pandora answered. Why would he? Somehow, she didn't think real nice guy was the proper description for any of them. They all kept saying 'real bad stuff' but none of them seemed to know what it was. Simply a scare tactic, or did everyone who went against chaos die so quickly that they didn't get to come back and spread rumors?

Pandora shook her head at him. The pity had begun to well up now. Didn't he see how crazy this all sounded? How crazy he sounded? Like her friends who'd been cheated on, and they tried to reason with the good side of their relationship. They were making up excuses for people that didn't deserve them.

"I'm not going to tell anyone," she affirmed. If Bazzite could trust no one else, he could trust Pandora to keep her mouth shut. "What are you going to do when they order you to kill someone?"

Generals, captains, lieutenants: it was a military structure, plain and simple. If the Order had that kind of setup, Pandora would be following instructions with hardly a look back. America had a military: people followed orders there, too.

Bazzi smiled at Pandora, clearly relieved. "Thanks. Beni's a lot stronger than I am an'... I've seen him do some pretty bad stuff to senshi. I dunno if I can. I'd rather just... I dunno..." The captain let his arms drop in frustration. Even going down this path made him anxious, nervous and sick to his stomach. What would he rather do? Capture senshi alive and drag them back to the Negaverse only to have God-knows-what happen to them? Just chat and gather info and run back to Benitoite like a tattletale?

What did he want?

If he didn't think about it, he could just follow orders with a smile and never have to worry about morality. Now he was being faced with a decision and a thought process that scared the hell out of him. Bazzi wasn't known for thinking because thinking got you in trouble. He wasn't mature enough, or rather, didn't have the skills and coping mechanisms to handle these sorts of thoughts. He was terrified. With a sniff, he sat down and brought his knees to his chest.

"I... I dunno what I'd do." he admitted softly. Would Benitoite punish him for disobeying a direct order to kill? If he killed, could he handle it? Could he sleep at night? Was killing someone without taking their starseed different? Was it less horrible? Bazzite had no idea. "I seen too much death already."

Pandora took in a deep, long breath and then shifted towards him. The senshi took her seat on the curb next to him, closer than many likely would. It was certainly a sight to be had, Order and Chaos mingling so close without violent contact or harsh words.

The senshi stayed quiet, letting Bazzite work over the thoughts in his mind. Pandora used the time to mull over the distinct irony of the words order and chaos when applied to the two forces. To her, the structures seemed the other way around. Everyone in the Senshi seemed lost. They had a little record in a cell-phone and their own survival skills to rely on. That was chaos.

"I don't know what I'd do, either," she admitted. Even if she weren't ordered, there would come a time where self-defense wasn't cutting it. The way Maia talked, the way Bazzi mentioned Bentonite, it sounded like she might someday become hunted by a Negaverse soldier. Killing might be easier then; she'd killed hunters before, just not human ones.

There was a pebble next to her, and Pandora brought this into her hands, idly moving it between her fingers.

"You ever ask how this whole mess started?" Pandora began again after a time. She tossed the pebble once in her hand. "What if it's for nothing more than for a Helen of Troy?"

Pandora admitting she'd be just as lost as he if placed in the same position made Bazzite feel a little better. Part of him was glad the senshi didn't have the structure the Negaverse did. Or rather, didn't anymore. Bazzite heard some things about senshi with a military overtone but didn't know much more than rumors about torture. He didn't want to think about it.

And then Pandora asked another question.

"How it all started?" he parroted, eyes kept evenly on a car across the street. Sure, he'd asked. Benitoite would know better than anyone by his estimation. "Yeah, I asked about that but I dunno about anybody named Helen or Troy. I suppose maybe somebody in the Negaverse is named Helen or Troy." Bazzite cocked his head for a moment and continued. "Anyway, I asked about why everything started happening and Beni told me this...

He said that there was a kingdom in space and on Earth a real long time ago. I dunno how long ago. Maybe bazillions of years - I'm not sure. Anyway, the kingdom on Earth was real nice and peaceful, like Eden or somethin'. But one day the senshi in space started warrin' with each other and they blew up their own worlds. An' there was this queen in the middle of it an' everybody died. But somehow the senshi came back but since their worlds are dead, they came here an' they're tryin' to make a new kingdom for themselves here on Earth. An' we're tryin' to keep everybody on Earth free."

Bazzite shrugged.

"Sounds like a fairy tale," Pandora mumbled. And, it did.

Was that the truth, or was it just the story they were told? In the medieval ages, they would have considered a flashlight magic, because they couldn't stand it. Was all of this merely advanced technology that they didn't understand. Did someone out there understand it?

It was so much easier just to call it magic.

Keep everybody on Earth free.

"No one's said anything like that to me," she whispered. In fact, other than destroy the evil that is Chaos, no one had mentioned anything at all about worlds being dead.

"Hang on." Pandora closed her eyes, and concentrated. The cell phone solidified in her hands slowly, and Pandora was already pressing the buttons and scanning through the database. There, she'd found it.

There was a nervous twitch in her gut as she made her next move. Carefully, she held out her hand for Bazzite to take the phone and read the text for himself. "There."

Not everyone on our side may share the same goals and ideals, but above all most of us wish to free the Earth and its citizens from the evil presence of those who wish to harm it.

"But, then," she continued, taking back the phone and thumbing down. She'd heard of space travel before. There was a whole dialogue dedicated to it.

You are able to travel to your home world through the use of your cellphone. What you find there may be encouraging, frightening or anything in between, but I encourage you to visit at least once. These are the places where we once dwelt.

Pandora stared at Bazzite for a moment. There was some overlap. Granted, there had to be lies somewhere. But, it sounded like one thing was clear between both factions: Senshi weren't from earth.

Pandora's heart was beating awfully hard. The right choice was hard to make when she didn't know the truth.

Bazzite tilted his head as he read the text. When he was finished, he frowned. Clearly there were two sides to this story and, like faith, one believed what one felt was right. It was all very confusing.

"That's a nifty trick. Can you only do that with your phone or can you do that with you too?"

If senshi could teleport, the Negaverse as Bazzite knew it was doomed.

"I guess there's no real way to know the truth, you know?" Bazzite laughed bitterly. Since he'd already begun this descent, he might as well follow it through even through it was terribly painful and completely out of his comfort zone. What he wouldn't give to simply run home and bake a pie of Lily and Alex. Pies were exponentially less confusing and morally terrifying than the origins of the war they now fought in. "...cuz none of us where there. Like the history books they got in school. We dunno the truth cuz we weren't there but all we got was witness accounts n' stuff. Who knows? Maybe what they're tellin' us is all lies and Godzilla's the one who blew up the universe or somethin'?"

The Captain chuckled. His mind, however dense, was beginning to fracture. Bit by bit were small fissures beginning to show.

"I know this'll be weird but... you're a pretty alright senshi. I hope we don't hafta fight again. I don't really want to."

The pebble was thrown. It landed, far out, in the park's grass.

"History is written by those in power." Pandora was repeating a quote that she'd read in one of her undergraduate courses. It had been a cross-cultural studies class dealing almost entirely with a lack of representation in history, media, and popular culture. The civilian had kept it with her, and it seemed the most important phrase in the world now.

Pandora wished she had something more to tell him. He sounded more confused than she did. There were patterns there, a history, and Pandora knew she could figure out the right way. She just needed the pieces. Bazzite, he seemed like he had nothing.

"Let's make a truce," she offered instead. It was all she could give him. Pandora knew no more answers that him, and she would not fill up his head with false hope. What she could do, however, is make a promise that she could keep.

"To never fight each other. From this handshake forwards." Pandora offered the hand which had once held the pebble.

Bazzite looked down at her hand, then to Pandora, then back to her hand again. A truce? Would he get in trouble for agreeing to a truce from a senshi? Would Beni find out? Surely Beni would understand and comfort him through his confusion. Bazzite just didn't want to kill anyone... it was too painful. He'd seen too much.

Gratefully did he take Pandora's hand and gave it a firm shake. "Truce. I won't fight you an' I won't take any starseeds. I don't like it. I'm glad I learned now than later cuz... it coulda been a lot worse, you know?"

Of course Pandora knew - she was nearly killed or worse... corrupted. Not that Bazzite knew how to corrupt someone but his inexperience would no doubt lead to some lethal conclusion. Therefore he left the important things to the higher-ups.

"Jus'... don't tell anybody. I don't wanna get in too much trouble, you know?"
