H U N T x R E F L E C T I O NWatered Down I'm feeling a bit confused after this battle... I did take a hit. That wouldn't have killed me, but I felt for sure the Dragon that came next would. F A M I L Y x S O L O Adoption There was only so much excitement Sam could take for one day. After seeing Mae off, the brown Drakein returned home, ready for a well-deserved rest. Unfortunately, his clan-mates didn't feel the same way... He'd hardly flown into their cavernous home when the sound of bickering caught his attention. Usually, he would do his best to ignore it until it escalated to the point of shouting or full-blown assault. However, this lot already seemed to be at that point... Rather than flying into his own cave, Sam glided down to the open crag to meet four Drakeins sitting about arguing with one another. Three of them were females of his clan, and the other was a traveling male, staying with them for only a short while. Sam wasn't sure of his name (it may have been mentioned before, but the brown Gaili couldn't be bothered to remember it), but he immediately recognized the other three as Nigerey; Crowell's mother, Riskaya; a spunky younger lass full of fire, and Lymera; who'd recently brought a new egg into the clan.
Samael landed in time to hear the end of some harsh words from the male, "I've seen beasts like those before." He said in a warning growl. Sam had no idea what he was referring to, but by his tone, it sounded bad. "They relish in the death and blood of others. None are their family, not even their own mothers. I would never allow such a monstrosity within my clan." The male scoffed, with a glare towards Samael, as if whatever was happening was his fault.
Sam had half a mind to snap back, but Lymera, the young female, whispered first. Samael had to be completely silent and lean close to hear her. "He's just a Keinling..." She said softly, her usual cheery gaze downcast and saddened. "Surely if he grows up amongst kind friends..."
"No!" The male snapped vehemently. "Just look at the little beast now!" He directed his nose up to one of the cliffs, the one where Lymera made her nest. Sam followed his gaze wearily, still a bit uncertain what this argument was about and not entirely sure he should be getting involved. But as his green orbs found the cliff face, he only saw a young Keinling with grey scales and deep red wings. It had the uncanny addition of wearing a skull upon its head. If that wasn't strange enough, the young thing wasn't playing or chirping for attention; he only sat and watched the group below, his head lowered almost sadly (although it was challenging to judge his expression with the skull in the way).
Sam blinked, finally ready to input his two-cents. "What of him?" He scoffed, letting his gaze fall back to the group gathered around at the bottom of the cliff. He still didn't know exactly what the group was arguing about, but if it involved some poor Keinling's well-being, it needed to stop. "He's a bit strange, but still harmless." Judging from the traveling male's tone, he wanted to do something sinister to the poor babe. Sam didn't know, nor did he want to know, what the traveler wanted done to the infant.
Lymera frowned, unconvinced and uncertain. "He's harmless now, I suppose..." She grumbled. "But... Even at this age, he expresses interest in the remains of the dead... I-it's very unsettling..." She stammered. She wasn't particularly eager to meet Sam's gaze.
The brown Drakein stood taller, letting his green orbs wander back up to the lonely Keinling. "What are you planning on doing with him?" Sam demanded tartly, already knowing he wouldn't liek the answer no matter who it came from.
As it turned out, Lymera didn't have the gall to tell him herself, but Nigerey sure did. Sam expected no less. "She wants to leave him out on his own! He'll surely die if we let him wander! The poor thing won't even last until nightfall!" The female declared, fanning her wings in agitation.
Before Sam could agree Riskaya was interrupting. "That's the whole point, isn't it?! We don't need any bloodthirsty, ill-inspired Keinlings to grow up learning our weaknesses, just so he can pick us off when he's ready. I say be rid of him now!"
Sam's answering scowl was dark and fear-inspiring. The small group quieted under his heated glare. "Is that what this is about?" The Drakein hissed, his voice low and venomous. "Your fear of an infant?" Sam had never heard of anything so ridiculously foolish in all his lifetime. "Despite his strangeness, he is one of our own, and we will protect him until he is able to do so himself. If he turns out to be the monster you claim, I will dispatch him myself. Otherwise, he is welcome in my clan as long as he likes."
Without waiting for their response, Sam fanned his wings and flew up to the young Keinling. It backpedaled away from him as quickly as its tiny legs would allow, letting out a small, helpless squeak as Sam approached him. Recognizing fear, the brown Drakein slowed. The poor thing... It seemed it was already feeling tortured by the clan's antics. Sam crouched low, putting his maw and belly against the ground to appear as small as possible as he sidled toward the whimpering infant. "It's alright, little one." He whispered in as soothing a voice as he could manage.
The sound of wing-beats had Sam turning toward the cave entrance. He expected it to be Nigerey to come help him care for the little one. Instead it was Lymera, emerging at the edge of her lair hesitantly. "I've named him Carrion..." She told Sam softly. "And he does come when he's called.
"What an awful name..." Sam muttered. Who would name their child after the reeking flesh of dead and poisoned prey? Still, the brown Drakein received little positive response from the tuts and coos he aimed at the Keinling. With a sigh, Sam resigned himself and called out that horrid name. "Carrion, come here little one." He goaded softly, slinking ever closer.
At hearing the name, the Keinling's whimpers paused, and he looked to Sam in confusion. Slowly, he ambled forward on uncertain claws, leaning into the larger adult to give his muzzle a sniff. The Gaili held perfectly still, not wanting to startle Carrion away before he became too comfortable. The Keinling sniffed curiously and at length before slinking another pace forward to get a better look, then another and another until his tiny claws right sitting right next to Sam's muzzle. Smiling softly, the adult snaked his tongue out to pass across the tip of the youngster's nose.
Carrion squeaked in alarm, bouncing uncertainly for a moment before diving toward Sam's nose playfully. Chuckling fondly, the brown Drakein stood on all fours and faced Lymera. "He'll be safest with me, I think." He told the female, not that she would care very much. Sending her one last disapproving stare, Samael scooped Carrion up in his jaw and flew back toward his own cave.
Needless to say, at first the Keinling was alarmed by his new surroundings. He may not have been with Lymera long, but she was all he knew. Carrion spent the first few days wearily watching Sam from the nest the older Drakein had built for him. He only hesitantly ate whatever was brought to him and didn't even peep as much as Sam would've liked. But as the days progressed, Sam crept an inch closer to the nest each night, until he found himself nestled at Carrion's side. After that feat was accomplished, Carrion started to become more interested in play, and he would eagerly pounce on pebbles that Sam would make float for him. Carrion shared his nest, his dinners, and playtime with Sam eagerly. Even the older Gaili had to admit... he was becoming fond of this little bugger.x x Results: Met Carrion Word Count: 1321 (total), 661 (for Sam)

I T E M x S O L O Just Looking... Sam was eager to return home and show off his new found abilities. He decided it would be best to fly in his Drakein form both because it was less noticeable and because he hadn't quite gotten a hold of two-legger flight, yet. Heehee, maybe he'd make his clan think he failed! He could already see all their apologetic faces, looking at him with dashed hopes. Only to have him change right before their eyes! The shock would be well worth it! Samael grinned as he flew over the mountains, thinking of his home. With the ritual out of the way, he could think of other things, like taming new pets, building a nice two-legger home, and maybe a real family of his own... Carrion was a good kid, but to have one of his own... That would be something.
Lost in his thoughts, Sam almost glided right over an uncovered wagon, packed to the rim with stuff and supplies. He glanced around, but didn't see anyone who looked like it might be the owner... He didn't see anyone at all, really. Deciding he had time for a bit of inspection, Sam headed down. He walked the perimeter of the wagon, nose to the air for any sign of trap or trouble. But in all honesty, he smelled nothing out of the ordinary. He'd even say it smelled a bit... stale, like this wagon had been here for a while. He doubted anyone lived out here. Someone had probably been traveling, trying to cart this stuff out of the mountains when some beast or dragon attacked them...
Since there was no one here... What could it hurt to have a look at the wares? With a shrug, Sam hopped his forepaws up onto the cart, sniffing around curiously. It was full of all kinds of weird things. Ropes, and clothes and bits of metal and food. Under some of those things, there were small knives, dishes, pretty bits of shining silk. Had they been moving to a new home? He hoped his back legs up and headed toward the front of the cart. Pillows and blankets, and something shining underneath. Sam nosed some of the stuff out of his way and found a nearly-closed pack, with something glistening inside. He pushed it open with his maw and gaped at what he saw. Colorful jewels and Dragon Tears! A few magical talismans, and tucked against the side of the cart was a shining staff. Sam had no idea how to use such things, but since he was a two-legger now...
He delicately picked the staff up with his teeth and hooked the pack between his claws. If there was no one here to lay claim to these things, then he'd make good of them himself! It would be a shame for them to sit here wasted and unused, after all. Grinning, Sam kicked away from the cart and continued on his way. Maybe he'd find someone to train him in two-legged combat... He could see himself wielding a real sword...x x Results: +3 Talisman of Second Chances, +2 Olive Taming Jewel, +2 Crimson Taming Jewel, +2 Sapphire Taming Jewel, +2 Emerald Taming Jewel, +1 Staff of Luck, +15 Ysali Dragon Tear Word Count: 509

F A M I L Y x S O L O Homecoming Sam flew with all deliberate speed back toward his mountainous home. All his new treasures made him even more eager to return and recount his tale; of the Ritual and then his curious finds afterwards. But should he really expose what type of test the Ritual was? Was it really his place to tell them all what taking on the dangerous task was like? Certainly no one had ever given him a play-by-play, and it hadn't hindered his chances. Of course, everyone went in knowing they could potentially die if they failed, so that was a pretty good warning.
The Gaili shook his head. If he could pass any of his wisdom along, then he should. Especially if his son decided he would one day attempt to follow in the footsteps of his father. For Carrion, Sam would have to tell them of his trials. The winds were in his favor and he arrived upon his mountains before the sky was dark. As he flew into his homelands, the sun cast his shadow across the crags, a dark blotch with wings outstretched. He could see curious heads peeking from their lairs, looking up at him and watching him fly toward his own cave. He still held the form of a Drakein.
He landed in the safety of his own home with the sound of his beating wings echoing down his cave. The noise roused Carrion, who was snuggled closely against Levi's feathered side while the Diabi tore rather gruesomely, violently, and (if Sam did say so himself) disgustingly into some type of dead prey animal. Oblivion glanced up in confusion, sucking a strip of meat into his maw. But he didn't stop the young Keindred from darting away from him in glee.
"Dad!" Carrion squealed, skipping over to the Gaili and nuzzling his head against the older Drakein's forearm. Sam had been gone for... well, it had been a long while, it seemed! And Carrion had learned much in his absence. The somber air from when Sam left made it seem like they didn't think he would return... But here he was! All chipper, and bright-eyed and perfectly fine! Carrion could even see that he carried a small sack of what he hoped were treats... But best of all was that he'd actually learned something while his father was away, and he simply couldn't wait to show him!
Levi rose slowly from his dinner, slowly arching down and stretching out his forelimbs, as if he'd been sitting in that position since Sam left. He couldn't help but appreciate the way the Gaili's green eyes landed on him, and Levi flicked his dark feathered tail in amusement. "So, you've returned." The Alikein purred in his deceptively sweet and charming voice. "Doesn't look like you've got much to show for it, unfortunately..." He muttered, looking Samael up and down speculatively. As his gaze landed on Sam's new found treasures, he quirked a brow. "I mean, what is that? A consolation prize?" The Diabi snorted in amusement, especially when Sam's emerald gaze darkened.
"No." Sam scoffed, a touch annoyed by his feathered companion. "I spotted an abandoned caravan on my way home. Since no one was there to claim these gems, I thought I'd do so myself, since I lost the majority of my treasures to the ritual..." Sam retorted, unfurling the pack and arranging the objects in contained neatly within his cavern, with Carrion at his heels curiously.
Levi's glowing gaze softened at the mention of the ritual. Sam almost sounded... put-out. Though there was no way of knowing if it was from the Diabi's teasing or because he'd failed... The clan had had a lot of hopes that Samael would return stronger than ever, but if all he came back with were a few trinkets... Oblivion plodded up to him slowly, pressing his soft, feathered nose against Sam's maw and earning a sharp, surprised intake of air from the Gaili. But Levi just nuzzled him affectionately, because personal space meant very little to him. "At least you've returned. No matter the outcome, there's more time. You can try again. Maybe we can even try together." Levi chortled, amused by the thought. He stepped back from Sam, only to see emerald orbs glittering with mirth.
The Gaili glanced to the ground, a smirk tugging at his lips. "You think I've returned a failure...?" He whispered. Well, that had been the idea. He was pleased to find that he could still bluff a bit, even if he hadn't said much. "I don't think we'll be needing to try the ritual together." Sam told him, turning his green gaze back to the glowing orbs of his companion. He stepped forward, letting his transformation magic swirl around him until he stood on two (slightly shaky) legs. His long platinum hair spilled around his shoulders, ending about where his tail appeared from his backside. He glanced down and noticed the golden markings along his forearm for the first time, nearly identical to the ones on his Drakein body. He flexed his fingers, still somewhat awed by himself before looking to Levi again, a tiny smile on his face.
Carrion squealed in surprise, rearing on his hind legs as his father changed before his eyes. No one had really explained to him what Sam was going off to do. Just that he'd come back... different. And different he was. The young Ayrala leaned in precariously to sniff at the Gaili's midsection. "You're..."
"More smokin' than a Firani!" Levi chuckled, looking the Drakeinian over appreciatively. Samael made a sexy enough Drakein, with his unique markings and horns, not to mention his obvious-enough power in the Cave of Dragons. But seeing him as a Drakeinian made him that much saucier. He'd know Sam was strong before, but this success put him right up there with the best. Somewhere Levi had yet to follow. "I think even the two-leggers would deem you sexy! They like their men to have all these hard planes and such." He hummed, pressing his muzzle to his older companion's chest.
Sam snorted in amusement, stepping away from the silky feel of Levi's feathers. "What do you know of two-leggers?" He scoffed, fighting the heat he felt coming to his face from the blatant praise and admiration from the Diabi. He'd thought he looked... pretty good, but nothing that would get anyone... steamy. He glanced down to see Carrion poking his tongue out and shaking his head in childish disgust. Adults talking about adult things. Gross! The youngster went to closely inspect the treasures Sam had returned with.
Levi's gaze went down pointedly. "I know they don't walk around nude, but that may just be a personal preference type of deal for them..." He snickered as Sam's tanned hand shot out to cover himself, like nudity was something he thought of and abhorred on a regular basis. Oblivion's tail twitched and he set a slow pace to circle around the Gaili Drakeinian. His glowing crimson orbs roamed over his backside, while Sam glared over his shoulder. "I don't think it would be terribly strange if I let you ride me, like the two-leggers ride their poor Bonded slaves."
Sam had the suspicion it wasn't the same type of riding at all. "My young child is still in the room." The Gaili uttered, sending his feathered companion a frosty glare. Besides, Levi was... was a guy. No matter how pretty he was or how soft his feathers felt against his scales. He spared a glance to Carrion, his small Ayrala adopted son.
Thankfully, the Keindred was still oblivious, looking over the paper talismans and dragon tears Sam had returned with. "So, are any of these for me?" He questioned, turning his red orbs on Sam.
The Gaili only smiled at him. "Mayhaps when you're old enough to use them."
"Great!" Carrion chirped, bouncing a bit. Now time for his news! "Levi taught me some great things while you were away!" While Oblivion proudly puffed his chest up, Sam scowled. What could the Alikein possibly have taught him? "He taught me to use my magic! And how to hunt a bit, and we stayed up all night, and he gave me baths. Baths, Daddy!" Samael didn't much care for baths, despite how Carrion told him they soothed his skin.
The Gaili blinked in surprise. Carrion was actually... taking to Levi pretty well. Yes, he'd had his reservations of leaving his young charge alone with this Diabi that he didn't know that well, but Carrion was alive and well, and actually excited about something. Sam spared a glance to Oblivion, who only shrugged at him. The Keindred seemed to like this guy, and Samael couldn't deny that Levi had his moments... Sam still didn't like that smoldering look the Diabi used to inspect him, but he supposed he should be flattered by it. "So you... You really took care of my kid while I was away, huh?" Sam whispered softly. He glanced up to see Levi's smirk, and the Gaili scoffed. "Hmph! Whatever! Maybe I can just trust you to babysit more often!"
Levi only grinned. "As you wish." One step at a time. But he was ever closer to winning this powerful Drakeinian's affections.x x Results: Returned home a Drakeinian! Word Count: 1546 (total), 516 (for Sam)

F A M I L Y x S O L O Presents Sam felt new vigor as the mountains he called his home loomed into view. He'd been away for so long and found that he was actually very eager to see a certain someone... And the quicker he flew, the sooner he could see that Diabi again! But something nagged at the back of his mind. He'd been away for weeks with no contact... They could've been worried for him... What if they were actually angry when they saw him again. Samael paused. Wasn't it customary to bring small presents back from a long trip? Maybe that would help quell their anger. But what should he bring them? Levi would be offended if it was food... And he didn't have time to pick up either of his cave mates anything from their homeland of Soudul...
A tiny cluster of green caught his eye right at the edge of the mountain, and within that cluster, something sparkled. Oblivion was a sucker for pretty things, and as he drifted closer, he realized it was round like a ball. Maybe Carrion could play with it! Sam smiled softly as he floated to the ground to inspect the small plants. The leaves were big, thick, and green, uncommon for his desert home. They made a nest around three small, glittering orbs. The Gaili was instantly mesmerized. They were like large white pearls, with splashes of bright color. Two of them had red designs, and the other, a faded purple.
It was kind of a lucky break, but these would be perfect! He carefully collected the three orbs and quickly returned to the air, brimming with new excitement. It didn't take Sam long after that to reach his home. The sun was still hanging overhead, so he shouldn't have been surprised to see his two roommates snoozing near the back of the cave. He couldn't help but smile at their positions. Carrion's small grey body was tucked up close to Levi's side, while the Diabi was splayed about like a dead bird, wings fanned at seemingly awkward angles. Somehow, the young Keindred managed to tuck himself beneath one.
It would almost be a shame to ruin this adorable sight. But Sam was too worked up just let them sleep peacefully. He set the orbs on the ground and shifted back to his Drakein form. He tried to be silent as he padded toward them, but his long claws clicked loudly against the cave floor. Neither of the sleeping Keins seemed to notice, though. Sam crept forward until his paws were right at Oblivion's head. He crouched down slowly, carefully, close enough that his breath gently rustled the Diabi's neck feathers. Sam brushed his maw along the Alikein's snout softly, whispering "Oblivion..." on a quiet breath.
The Diabi felt a soft wind rustling his feathers. The sounds of night birds chirped softly in the background. This was his home continent of Soudul, where a comfortable darkness always settled. The Alikein yawned softly and glanced down. Beneath his black feathered wing, another Drakein lay curled against him, sleeping soundly. Levi smiled fondly, and leaned his nose down to brush against the top of Samael's head. The Gaili was slow to rouse, and as he turned his maw up to blink sleepily at Levi, he only uttered out a tired, "Oblivion..."
Levi woke abruptly with a quiet gasp. He whipped his head around to face the intruder in his home, only to see a certain Gaili's soft green eyes. Oblivion stared up at him with dumbfounded surprise, his glowing red orbs widening as far as they possibly could. And then he was on all fours, slamming his head against Sam's in a violently affectionate nuzzle. "You're home!" He purred in delight, continuing to rub the side of his face against the other Drakein's, as well as along his neck.
Samael allowed himself to bask in the very obvious affection, even returning it by pressing against the Diabi and releasing pleased hums of his own. Oblivion didn't call him on it, despite the Alikein's surprise. Instead the Diabi pulled away slowly, excitement brimming in his ruby orbs. It seemed the long time apart had done their... relationship some good! Oblivion beamed openly. He was about to comment on how happy he was that they were finally reunited when Sam bypassed him and went to crouch near little Carrion. The crow Drakein refused to admit that he was disappointed that Sam wanted to wake the youngling, and kept his mouth shut.
"Carrion. Carrion, I've brought you a present." Sam cooed softly, tenderly nudging the Keindred's skull.
Bleary red eyes opened slowly. The youngling could tell that it hadn't been long since the warmth from Levi's feathers had left him. Just long enough to bring a chill across his scales. He grinned and bounced to his feet instantly, though, as Sam's words reached him. "Dad!" He chirped, his small wings fluttering in excitement as he bounced over to greet Samael, eagerly trying to leap high enough to bump him under the chin.
The Gaili chuckled and leaned down just enough for the top of the Keindred's skull to just barely brush the underside of his maw. Carrion then proceeded to squeal in glee and run excited circles around Sam. He'd been starting to think the Drakein who'd adopted him would never return. Ever. So to see him and Levi standing side by side now was all the present he needed. ...Although, he certainly wouldn't turn down a real present, either. "So, you brought me something?" He asked in delight.
Samael could hardly hide his amusement. "Yep, a present for both of you. Well, all of us, I suppose!" He amended cheerfully, pleased at the way Levi perked up in curiosity as he was included. Sam plodded over to where he'd left the little orbs, followed closely by his two companions. He sat in front of them, delicately nudging them forward for his roommates to see. "Aren't they lovely?" The Gaili asked in quiet awe.
The other two shared a skeptical look at the strange plant-like present Sam had set before them. They were weird, that was for sure, and they glistened softly in the dim sunlight entering the cave. But lovely? They were just tiny orbs... But Levi didn't want to ruin the good graces he found himself in, so he pawed one of the little treasures - one that was spotted with red - toward him and looked it over. "It's very nice." He agreed with a nod, hoping he hadn't waited too long to respond. But Samael only sent him a pleased smile.
Carrion, on the other hand, had no reservations of politeness. Besides being round and shiny, this orb seemed to be useless. With a tiny frown, he swatted at one that appeared identical to the one Levi had chosen. It was plucked from its nest with a tiny 'pop!' and rolled across the floor. When Carrion looked closer, he noticed a tiny crack, and gasped in surprise. Oh, crud. He'd already broken it! He glanced up to see if Sam had noticed, but the big Gaili wasn't paying too much attention...
So Carrion trotted after the little orb and rolled it over for inspection. It was so thin-looking... Like glass. He gave it another nudge and the crack spread. The Keindred squeaked in surprise and backed a few paces away from it. Then, of its own accord, the orb quivered, and a new crack formed. The young Ayrala's eyes were practically bulging at this point, as a tiny white face with redish accents appeared from the orb. "Dad!" Carrion yelped in alarm, bounding over to tuck himself between Sam's front legs.
The Gaili looked up in confusion, only to spot a small creature flopping from the orb with no amount of grace. It crawled from its confinement and spread its wings before giving them a few flaps. It shook its head, then turned to face the three stunned Keins before it. It chirped quietly, then waddled nearer.
Sam wasn't sure if he should be weary or just in awe. It couldn't be too dangerous... It was only an infant, after all... Plus... It kind of looked like a miniature Drakein. Maybe they were distant family somehow! Another noise near his hindclaws caught his attention, and he glanced down to see the orb that hadn't been chosen by Carrion or Levi quivering and cracking.
"They're eggs!" Oblivion said in awe, as his too began to move and crack. Levi's hatchling was extremely similar to Carrion's in coloration, though not in temperament, it seemed. It had more of a 'ruff' than a chirp, and as Carrion's pet draw nearer to them, it let out a warning screech and beat its wings furiously. It danced around Levi's paws, squawking at anything that drew too near. It was not appeased until Levi scooped it up in his maw. It quickly slunk from between his teeth and perched on his head. The Alikein was instantly in love. "I like 'em." He announced.
So Sam turned his attention to what he was officially claiming as his egg. The one decorated in a quaint purple. The little beast that hatched from it was a shade of greyish-blue, with purple wings. It looked around blearily, but made no sound. When it's eyes landed on Sam, he was pretty sure it smiled at him and shuffled closer. As it pressed against his hind leg, it purred, and then slipped up his leg to his back, and danced up his spine to his shoulders. She draped around his neck, slipping her long tail about him lie a necklace. Samael chuckled in amusement.
Carrion found that he was still weary of the tiny creature. He growled at it whenever it came too close, and swatted at it when it didn't heed his warnings. The Keindred kept moving around the cave in an effort to get the tiny dragon to stop following him. But it didn't. After a while, it learned to keep its distance, though there was obvious sadness hanging around it. Carrion didn't care. If it was a dragon, then it would soon be big enough to eat him, anyway...
Sam looked around at his family and the strange young creatures that now accompanied them. "We should probably consider finding out what they like to eat." He advised with a chuckle.x x Results: Returned to Carrion and Levi, bringing adorable little Fae dragons with him! Word Count: 1734 (total), 578 (for Sam)
