G R A D U A T I O N Esmeralda Vorporian had started out as a tiny fragile eleven year old when she first became a scholar, and after years of research and many adventures in between, at the age of seventeen she was finally graduating and becoming an adept. Granted Esmeralda had wished this title had been bestowed upon her earlier in her life, but she was none the less happy to be able to move on and explore her new freedom. Her eighteenth birthday was just around the corner too, which was most exciting because it meant shedding that child exterior and jumping into the adult world. Scary, but exciting.
The ceremony had been brief as not many had made it to adept this round. She’d received a little pin to show off and tell the whole world who saw it that she was now an adept. It had two blue gems surrounded by silver scales; Esmeralda thought it fit her profession quite nicely. She was now also finally recognized as a person of little interest whose work probably wouldn’t be rejected as often as before. Granted, she didn’t expect many to actually acknowledge her, she was not by far a master in her studies, but a time would come when she would be and then everyone would take her seriously.
For now, Esme was content with weaving through the crowd to meet up with her parents who were both waving at her. She hadn’t seen them at all since she’d become a scholar, and she felt a little embarrassed by this. They did seemed quite happy to see her though; as soon as she was near them her father grabbed her into a tight hug which lifted her off the ground.
“Dad please, people are watching.” Esme’s cheeks light up like a firecracker, but her father dropped her and her mother grabbed her into a more civil hug.
“We haven’t seen you in so long! You’ve grown so much, and so beautiful.” Her mother’s hand lingered on her cheek; Esme grabbed on and held it, tears coming to her eyes.
“I’m so sorry, I wanted to visit, but I just couldn’t. I’m happy to know you’ve received all of my letters though.”
“Of course, we’ve also kept all of them. We’re telling everyone you’re an adept and all about your research. Why didn’t you come home? You still have all of your things there; you know you’ll always be welcomed with open arms.”
“I know mother, I know. Come, I’ll show you to my new office, I’ve moved all my things there yesterday.”
Moving away from the crowd of parents and teenagers, Esmeralda showed her parents around the place until they reached her office. It was still quite small, but less cramped than before. She had bookcases full to the brim, her desk was an organised clutter, and she’d managed to fit a chair and had a small window too. Though, as her hulking father went into the room, three people in the small sized room seemed all too small. So Esmeralda decided to show them her new apartment where she stayed with all the other Adepts.
“I used to room with a bunch of apprentices, now we’re only two or three adepts together in the room. Thankfully, I only have one roommate.”
It had been hard to adjust to living with so many people, especially considering she was an only child.
“Well, it looks cozy enough. As long as you’re okay, just come visit more often.” Her mother looked at her father and grabbed his hand.
“We’re going to be having another baby; you’re going to be a sister.”
Esmeralda didn’t know what to say really, this was going to be another page in her book of life. She didn’t know how to be a sister, much less how to handle babies… Heck, she didn’t even look at boys yet!
“Why don’t we speak about this over dinner? I’ll come over tomorrow and I can grab some of my things?”
“Sure, we’d love to have you!”
Esmeralda ushered her parents out of the room and then the building to send them home. As much as she wanted to stay and chat with them, she still had other things to do and plan out. She sighed loudly, this new journey was going to be a rocky one.

H E A T x R I S I N G x H I G H x Dear journal,
It is strange, my last meeting with Tyrok I could honestly feel the hostility between us. No, our differences were what I could really feel. When we were younger, we were such innocence. As we got older, war started rubbing us and I am sadden to say that it has bled into my relationship with Tyrok. While I wouldn’t exactly consider us friends, there was at least some… something. Respect? Understanding? I don’t know. I hope that I have not mistreated him; I would feel horrible if I’d done such a thing. I would never treat someone with distain like I was treated, and he’s half Dovaa. That should count for something? It doesn’t seem so… Not for him anyways. Our encounter has left me with many confusing and conflicting emotions and I am unsure how to deal with them.

F R I E N D S H I P Dear journal,
The two previous Hybrids I had met before almost live up to their names, I don’t want to be mean but they did scare me quite a bit! However, after meeting Junjie my thoughts have changed! He is the most adorable little boy I have ever met! I wish I could have stayed longer, but I needed to go. Boy oh boy did I enjoy talking to him though! I talked about dragons and he listened and he asked questions and I could answer and he was so thirsty for knowledge it was invigorating! I’ve told him how he can reach me and I’ve also told him that I’ll try and visit from time to time. I feel like I’m doing something illegal, and I guess in a way I am. But who will know?

A W K W A R D x D I N N E R Keeping her word to her parents, Esmeralda decided to visit her parents the next day. She hadn’t seen her parents in a while, with her nose constantly in her research and when she did come back she stayed with the other scholars. While she did feel a little bad for the negligence, Esme simply had no wish to stay home where her family might visit and look at her with an air of disgust. She knew that was how they saw her now, a disgrace to the family… And she was the one who was supposed to be taking over the family… Shameful. At this point though, and because she was now the rebellious teenager of the famly, Esmeralda didn’t care what the other members of her family thought of her. As long as her parents accepted her for who she was, that was all that mattered to the Peisio Dovaa.
“Mother I’m home.” Esmeralda gently knocked on the door as she entered her old home. It hadn’t changed much, but she knew that her parents had added an extra addition for the incoming baby.
“Come in come in, your father is still at the shop, but you can help me cook dinner.”
“Of course.”
Going back to a family routine was odd; Esmeralda was so used to her own cooked meals atop a fire she’d built. Using an oven seemed so unnatural, but it was still nice to be back by her mother’s side.
“So how have your travels been?”
“Good, I’m always on the go it seems, but I am happy none the less to have my research acknowledge.”
“Yes, it is good to see you succeeding in your new life as a civilian.”
“Mother… About that.”
“You don’t need to explain anything Esmeralda, we are happy to see that you are happy. You were never like anyone else in the family, fragile little child. I know you will give us plenty of little Dovaa children and will be a better mother because of it. “
Esmeralda chuckled softly and smiled back at her mother.
“Why don’t you set up the table now?”
By the time the table had been set, Esmeralda’s father had arrived swooping in to give her wife a long kiss and his daughter a hug. The food was set and everyone sat to eat.
“It’s been a while since we’ve been able to eat as a family.”
“Indeed. So about this baby, I thought you had had enough with this child’s shenanigans?”
“Well, your mother thought the house was getting a little too quiet. And I agreed, so we thought we’d give it a try.”
“What gender are you hoping for?”
“A boy.” Seeing Esmeralda’s reaction, her father spoke fast.
“We already have a little girl, so we’d like to have a boy.”
“I see.” Esmeralda didn’t exactly know how to take the news, a boy meant surely a battler. A boy meant he would continue the family name… Of course her parents would want a boy. The rest of the dinner was spent in small talk away from the baby.

L O N E S O M E Dear journal,
I did not know how lonely my life has been, void of family and friends for some time now, until I met Ekundayo. Such an odd and yet interesting character, I never thought I would find companionship from an Oblivionite of all people. I have found myself missing the people I love and seeking kinship with anyone that is within my grasp, as it happens, Eku was the one to appear. He also seems lonely, maybe this is why I feel close to him because he understands what others fail to. Maybe I’m just going crazy out here, but it’s nice to have someone around.

H U M O R Dear journal,
I’ve come across two pure blood Oblivionites now and the common factor both seemed to share was this interesting sense of humor. Sort of like teasing the person and enjoying the look they get in return for the joke. I didn’t think I’d ever say this but, the Oblivionites seem to have a rather good sense of humor! While I don’t like being terrorized, the Oblivionites go about it in a way that well, I admittedly find funny even if I am laughing at myself. I’m sort of hoping to meet more now, just so I can see if they all have that same humor.

H O M E x C O M I N G The dinner with her parents had been… Interesting to say the least. But none the less, Esmeralda did want to spend a few months back at home. It would do everyone some good and she could do some rewriting of her notes. Plus, with her mother’s growing belly Seristas would need some help around the house. Plus, this would be a good time for some mother daughter bonding, after all Esme would have her own little Dovaa children running around some day. This kind of stuff wasn’t really taught in school, and the real world wasn’t exactly an open book about this sort of thing either.
Plus there was the cold hard fact that Esmeralda didn’t really know that many Dovaa who were her age. She didn’t quite stay long enough with the other scholars or civilians to truly meet them and talk to them since she was always out and about on an adventure. Battlers were always in packs together so that was pretty much a no go either. Esme didn’t mind being single, boys weren’t exactly on her priority list at the moment. The only boys she had talked to weren’t those she should be courting anyways… Hybrids and Oblivionites… Lord help her if her mother ever found out who she was seeing.
In the end, Esmeralda ended up spending the whole nine months of her mother’s gestation at their home. She’d helped build her sibling’s new bedroom and had even helped her father make some furniture for the new baby. She’d sat down with her parents as they’d gone through different names for the baby, girl and boy names of course because they didn’t know what the gender of the child was. Esme was still a little sore from the dinner and always being a single child, but maybe a sibling would do her some good?
The hardest part of having to stay at home had to be seeing the other members of her family. The older generations looked down upon Esmeralda with distain, some even avoided talking to her if they could but they always remained courteous if they had to speak to her. Her grandparents were the only ones to openly voice their opinions on the whole thing, but her parents shielded her as best they could. Her cousins weren’t exactly sure how to react to the whole thing, but not a single one of them treated her badly. A wind of change some of them called it.
It wouldn’t be long now; Seristas’s belly was large and round. They’d settled on a name for each gender, the nursery was ready. They were now playing the waiting game, and Esmeralda was getting antsy. She didn’t like staying so long in one place cooped up and doing small daily chores. This would be good for her though, she’d learned quite a bit in the past few months including how to take care of a baby. It wasn’t her mother’s first child, but they’d still all gone over the basics. Esmeralda prayed for a sister.
