• | This serves mostly as future reference for myself. During my hiatus (from Feb. 2016 to Aug. 2017) Rhys was on assignment at an external outpost and probably only marginally aware of the happenings on the island. Details listed below.
Was on assignment at Mexico Outpost #17 initially for only 6 months, wound up getting his stay extended indefinitely. His official assignment lasted for 1 year and 7 months.
Mexico Outpost #17 - Tinúm, Yucatán, Mexico
An abandoned underground research facility situated deep inside the forest surrounding the Chichen Itza ruins. It is well off the beaten path and you wouldn't know to look for an entrance unless you knew this facility ever existed at all, but for the sake of added security hunters are strongly encouraged to only enter and exit the facility under the cover of night. Of course, that "rule" is bent and broken basically all the time for self-preservation reasons. Days are typically long with shifts starting well before dawn and ending just after twilight to give time enough for travel. There are usually no more than 6 hunters assigned there at any given time, with four being long-term while the other two are rotated out almost on a quarterly basis.
There are a total of five ruins nearby that have any indications of activity requiring Deus's attention. The sites are hours apart and accessible only by foot so visits are done on a rotating schedule and in pairs. Two pairs go out and one pair stays at home base to keep eyes on the surveillance feeds set up at the sites that are not being visited on a given day. Each site is relatively similar--an abandoned temple-like structure with an overpopulation of fear creatures. The sites are suspected to be abandoned horsemen lairs but there has yet to be any concrete evidence of that. Still, fear creatures are attracted to the sites for whatever reason, so aside from research and monitoring hunters are tasked with keeping that population in check so that the locals don't start getting too curious.
The facility is basically a giant box separated into six smaller boxes with a small, central common area. There is a room solely dedicated for surveillance and research, a working kitchen, two bedrooms with two bunk beds each, a bathroom, and storage. Plumbing is crude but functional, though drinking water has to be drawn from a well. All chores are, again, on a rotation, done by hand, and cooking is done over a wood stove. That stove is the only real source of heat, but jackets are only advised for those who get cold easily. Electricity is also crude at best so all files and records are done by hand just to be safe. The brightest room in the base is the surveillance room, and the rest of the place is dimly lit and sort of dismal. Candles or flashlights are also advised but not entirely necessary.
Something else to note: a pervasive clammy smell always hangs in the air so air freshener is also advised, probably more so than the candles or flashlights. Is probably severely tanned. Likely to have picked up some gnarly scars from missions and whatnot.
Interest in research remains limited. Mostly hung around as a source of brute force if ever needed, though his stay was quiet (enough). He never had to keep busy considering all the chores, though.
Zephira was quieter than normal for whatever reason. She mostly just complained when he didn't summon her more than once in a day, chalking it up to boredom.
Note: The reason for her quieter nature is likely due to her being physically closer to her original home (from before she became a student), though of course she doesn't know that that's the case. Rhys has no idea either, he's just grateful for the extra quiet time he's had since being assigned to this outpost. Proficiency with the sword has increased, though for the most part a lot of it is still flailing the weapon about. Plenty of time to practice though, so has definitely improved.
Officially returned to the main island on August 01, 2017, some time after lunch because he refused to use the portal while on an empty stomach.
