[ S ] Sinking In [ S ]

[- 503 words -]
[- Sulburi -]

Nuri couldn't believe it. It had actually happened. He had completed his test, passed with flying colors, and now was officially part of the Oban army. His dream, the one thing that drove him during the past few years, was finally a reality.

Yet it felt like nothing had changed.

Call him crazy, but Nuri had that hope that when he finally was a warrior, he would feel different somehow. Maybe more mature, or confident, or stronger. All of these big changes that would mean he was something worthwhile, but the only change he had was a downtime. No more training, at least not for the moment. He was directed to wait, wait for further instructions and to claim his bunk in the barracks. Otherwise, it all felt the same.

He still played with his sister. He still gave his mother a kiss on the cheek and sought praise from his father. He still spent time thinking about Aseara and regretting some of the choices he made. There was no change, beside his title, and it was strange.

The Oban was still in the process of moving his belongings to the barracks, at least the few things he needed. He fighting clothes, some items for Naraka, really there wasn't much. Everything else was provided by the army. He would get new armor, a better whip, and would be set for the provisions that he needed to survive. Sure, he could head home if he wanted, but there was no point. He was in the army now, and all he needed was at his disposal.

Sure, there were changes, but internally he just felt the same. He felt weak, confused, and uncertain. He felt like he had a lot of growing to still do, and a long time would be needed to do so. When would he feel like he was ready, like he was as strong as the legendary warriors that lead their pack? Why was he still asking questions and seeking guidance? Nuri was at a loss, and was struggling as more and more of his feelings began to sink in.

It seemed as if he was disappointed in a way. He came to this realization that becoming a beast tamer would mean more than just training to fight and kill. Instead of leading the pack, he was left wandering and following direction, training local creatures and keeping his head low. Sure, he learned a lot, but somehow he felt like he needed to learn more.

It was a tough pill to swallow. To believe that he needed to push himself and become something more despite getting as far as he did. To realize that, after all the hard work, there was still more that he needed to do. Whatever it was, he still had yet to determine, but he knew there was something. And so, he would train each day, and learn all he could, so that one day he could move forward and make the changes that needed to happen.

Nuri pulled his cowl tight against his face as he moved away from the gates of Sulburi, his eyes keeping a tight watch on the path before him. It was late in the morning as he traveled away from his city, his faithful Janarim companion set by his side. After only a few weeks of orientation and drills with the army, he received his first 'mission' from his superiors, and it was one that was clearly left for the newest of new. He would never complain, as a mission would always be a mission, but it was not as glorious as he had dreamed his duties would be.

But anything was better than cleaning the barracks and running drills.

As he neared the location he was set to manage, Nuri caught sight of the two creatures causing all of the fuss. A tree along the travelers path housed a newly made nest containing two very fussy Zore. Both had been reportedly attacking merchants who would walk by, leaving the entire company in a fuss. Word had moved back to the army, and someone was required to go and check it out, as well as deal with the situation. Hopefully, he wasn't too late.

If they had already laid their eggs, there was no chance he would get them to move without risking the health of the chicks, and that was something the Beast Charmer wanted to avoid at all cost.

Pulling out his whip, Nuri softly signaled for Naraka to stay put, before moving forward toward the tree in question. He could see the nest, as well as a small form poking out, but it seemed there was only one. Maybe the report had been incorrect, and others had spoken out of fear or stress.

As if fate had determined to taunt him, at that precise moment a loud cry shook the air above, and the Beast Charmer looked up with wide eyes to see the other Zore just as it darted down to strike him. Grunting, Nuri rolled to the right and set to crack his whip just as he had been trained. The sound sung in the air as the Zore flew away, yet it rounded in the air and swiped down to strike again.

Again and again, Nuri used his whip to strike the air after the Zore passed, but it seemed little was working. Suddenly, Nuri got the idea, and on the next pass he sent the whip out before the Zore passed to fill the air with the crack. The bird swerved away, letting out another cry before racing off toward some leafless trees in the distance.

One down, one to go.

As Nuri moved toward the tree, he signaled for Naraka to get up. Hopefully the presence of the Janarim would frighten the mother, as it didn't seem as aggressive. In fact, it only took a few moments of coaxing and noise before the bird got up and flew off, leaving Nuri with a triumphant smirk as he moved to the tree. Climbing slowly up, he attempted to peer into the nest to see if anything was inside.

When he finally reached the top, his shoulders dropped and he shook his head at his luck - the nest was empty.

It was a shame, but Nuri knew he had to remove the nest from the tree. When he would return to the palace, odds were some other Obans would come and cut down it anyway. At least he could try and relocate the nest. Even if he did so, he knew it would be very unlikely the Zore would use it, but he had to try. Jumping down from the tree with the large nest in his hands, Nuri nodded to Naraka with a pleased smile, before turning and heading to the trees off the path.

[- Roleplay Located Here -]
[- 868 words -]
[- Sulburi -]

Nuri felt a headache coming on as he moved away from the meeting he had with his peers. He ignored the jeers from both Vukidal and Brahnde, well aware and comfortable with their irritation after what happened during his trial. Despite time having moved forward, it seemed their grudge at getting caught would never be dropped. Nuri, however, was content to let them stew as long as they didn't act on it - he knew what his place was and it was not to start a fight with foolish Tamers.

Nodding stiffly at the other Tamer from his trial, he moved out of the door and into the sunlight and heat, closing his eyes and resisting the urge to groan. There had been an increase in meetings lately with all members of the army, the stress of the city causing them to work harder than ever. Not only had fights been breaking out between Obans and visitors, but now there were vicious rumors spreading that put everyone on edge.

Nuri would always stand by the idea that everything would be much better off once all of these foolish outsiders left their city. The novelty would ware off, and soon they would be left on their own once again. All the needed to do was wait and endure.

Stretching his arms high, he let a soft whistle leave his lips and waited a long second. The telltale signs of his faithful familiar, Naraka, filled the silence and once they joined he began his path back home. Despite the meeting being over, Nuri knew this walk would be long and full of deep thoughts as he tried to work through everything he had just heard.

Rumors have been spreading throughout the city, and from what they knew these rumors came with the travelers. Normally, the army would note the rumors and let them pass, but these were dangerous and worth disclosure. Apparently, there were reports of ambushes in the far lands of Jauhar. Nuri knew the lands from his brief visit with his father, and knew of the threat. Jauhar was a recent expansion of Oba, and one that they needed to protect for the merchants. If ambushes were occurring, it was a threat to all of the Obans.

Letting out a deep breath, Nuri ran a hand through his hair and shook his head. Accounts of earthlings being beaten by the much larger Amazon Sisters were troublesome indeed, and if they were taking all of the supplies and wares, that was even worse. The only good thing about open borders was increase in revenue, and to have that threatened meant that the nobles and royalty would demand protection. That meant the army would need to become involved soon.

Before now, Nuri was left with simply guarding the merchant paths from stray creatures, he was still quite green when it came to fighting any actual enemies. The threat of going to war to protect the lands was both interesting and left a deep pit in his stomach. He held confidence, but not enough to walk the front lines.

It wasn't as if he would be atop a great beast - he would literally be standing in front and sending Naraka - his friend - into war.

The jungles were also thick, and full of different creatures he had only read about. How was he to face animals he had never tamed, and work to fight them if he didn't know? This was not something he was prepared for, and made him feel wary about what was to come. However, that did not mean there was fear in his bones.

No, he had a family, a sister to protect. He had a friend (despite their current lack of communication) who he promised he would always keep her safe. He had a brother-in-arms who he still had to prove his worth to. All of these things were driving factors, and were much stronger than the rumors that were whispered around each corner. He had Oba to protect, and he would protect it with blood, sweat, and tears.

As he neared his barracks, Nuri slowed down his walk to simply let his mind wander one last time to the issue at hand. He reminded himself that they were simply rumors, often expanded to scare and to scold. This didn't mean that they were actually happening. In fact, odds were it was a very localized incident that got blown out of proportion.

He would continue with his path, continue his training, and follow his orders. If they wanted him to look, he would with no fear in his heart. He knew that, if there were actual attacks, it was his job to protect his people just like with his patrols and the wild fauna. This was no different, and he had an army to help and support him as needed.

Yes. With that confidence in mind, Nuri knew it was time to let the worry go and move on with his evening activities. He had another long day of training, and no time to stay up late fretting like a youngling. If the day came, he would face it head on. For now, it was time to rest.

Nuri was at his training grounds once more, embracing the silence of the worn down outskirts of Sulburi. It was rare he had a chance to come this far out - often he would take advantage of his new location and position in the army and train on site. However, it seemed as if the uppers were feeling relaxed and indulgent, as they gave everyone extended leave for the day. It was quite possible they had the festival on their mind, and wanted to get away to enjoy the even themselves just as the soldiers did.

Nuri, on the other hand, was content to use his free time to ponder away in silence far away from the massive population. The streets were littered with prep work for the festival, and it seemed that every year more and more foreigners came to catch sight of the celebration. It was tiresome, and sometimes he wished he could just wander in the dunes until the stress and population was gone like the sand on the winds.

To his right, his ever faithful Janarim settled on the dusty ground, occasionally sniffing about and perking when a stray noise occurred. Naraka was one of the few presences he would always tolerate, the beast like a second weapon to the warrior. It was pretty much meant to be, considering he was a beast charmer in the army. They were bound for the rest of the creature's life, and Nuri really wouldn't have it any other way.

"Festivals are going to start soon..." he grumbled softly to Naraka, watching silently as the beast lifted his head and gave full attention, "I'm sure we will get leave to go and enjoy it like everyone else, or possibly protective duties. We will have to behave, as many of the younglings wont know what to do with a war-trained Janarim."

He shed a not-so-rare smile, unaware of how much his solider's facade slipped these past few months. The stress of his trial was over, he had some new allies and friends, and he felt the pressure of his father was no longer on him. Content would be a good way to describe where he was in his life.

Maybe he had On'os to thank for his fortune, for he was quite fortunate enough in his past endeavors. Someone had to have been watching over him during that trial, giving him the strength he needed to prevail. If it wasn't On'os, it was bound to be Jonal. Both provided him with the strength to prove his worth to Nerad, and receive the acceptance into the army.

And his relationships were also something to think over, and the hand the gods must have had. Hatald snuck her touch in there when she threw Aseara into his path, the frustratingly beautiful woman. They may not see eye-to-eye, but that was bound to be a trial when meeting with a woman. There would always be some sort of interaction and issue, and it was a trial that Nuri needed to face.

The thought of his gods, and of his one non-Oban friend, made him begin to wonder about her gods. They never spoke much of Aseara's past - she always was in the moment and enjoying where she was. But that didn't mean that she didn't have a faith and a history. If he could recall from his teachings and the rumors, the Wind Tribe worshiped some goddess of death and life...much like Essd. He could not recall her name, but he did remember that they often said it in passing.

Nuri wondered if Aseara took on their gods now that she was in their land. Sometimes he would forget she was a foreigner, with her Oban dress and her attitude. It wasn't hard to look past their differences in appearance when they were alone - she provided him that comfort. Or maybe, once again, it was Hatald's touch that helped him see her differently than the others of the land.

Nuri ran his hand through his hair and let out a huff. He wondered how he could get back on her good side and make things right again. Maybe some more candies, or even seeing if she would like to join him for the festival. The thought caused him to still almost immediately. He knew, he knew the reaction he would get from his peers and his strangers if he walked with a Windling. The eyes, and the judgement on both of them. It was the same look he gave to others.

But why, then, was Aseara so different? Was it because she was no stranger, but a friend? Was it because she listened, and shared, and was the first step toward finding trust in another?

"Curse it all, Naraka." He grumbled, giving up on his confused and uncertain feelings. Friendship was difficult. Allies and brothers-in-arms he could deal with, but unbaised friendship was new. Add in a different race, one he was raised to see as inferior and weak, and it provided a whole slew of messy emotions.

This, this is why he needed to sit and think, and fight. Maybe another journey into the sands would be good, to see the beasts of the desert. He wanted to stop thinking, but running never solved anything.

As he sat there in silence, Nuri took a long moment to prey to all of the gods. He preyed to On'os for continued fortune in his endeavors and extended time in his life. He preyed to Jonal for strength in any and all wars, and for his own personal strength to continue onward as well. He preyed to Atun and Drach and even Ubeli to continue to bless their land and provide them with healthy beasts and looked to Lenoxe for succulent crops and feasts. And he preyed to Hatald, to give him some more guidance on how to deal with the women in his life.

And finally, he saved his last and longest prayer to Nerad and Essd, to help him move forward and to thank them for the path they have provided. As he dropped his hands in prayer, Nuri moved to stand, and silently headed home.

Nuri was called on another mission to deal with a creature interfering with the trade routs. This time, it was no real danger - or so he was told. As he approached the road where the issue was last reported, he caught sight of a large animal that was taking up most of the path, content to just stand in the middle and be a bother to the carts trying to get by. A Quhar stood, somber and still, and clearly a bit of an issue.

Nuri looked around as he approached the animal, trying to determine if there was a herd nearby or if this animal was alone. Rubbing his face, he circled it from all angles to see if there was a best way to get things moving.

"Alright big guy, you are a bit of an issue and need to move along..."

He chuckled a bit as the animal lifted its head slightly before looking back down, still content where he stood. He knew that the creature wouldn't be easy, as many merchants would have tried the same thing. So, he unwound his whip and began to snap it lightly to the side, trying to get the creature to move along.

It took a long few minutes, but Nuri was patient and willing to wait it out. Finally, he dropped his whip and looked around again, spotting a patch of dry grass. Running over, he tore the tuft up from the sand wand walked back, intent to persuade the animal to move away. It seemed to do the trick, as the Quhar lifted its head, sniffed a bit, and began to follow.

As Nuri drew the creature off the road, he saw the relieved smiles of the men trying to get by. It seemed everyone was content, the Quhar included when he snapped at Nuri's hand and took the grass away. Brushing his hands off quickly, Nuri watched the animal keenly in silence.

Maybe there was some sort of connection, or friendship, because Nuri felt the urge to walk up and pet the animal. If he was lucky, he could even take it home. It was well past the time he needed to get another familiar, and this one wouldn't really threaten Naraka like another Janarim would. Rubbing his head, he attempted to walk closer and see if he could push his luck.

As soon as he settled his hand on the back of the Quhar, the beast lifted its head with a start, before slowly turning to eye him from the side. Nuri cooed softly, but it was no solution as the animal began to shake its head back and forth. It pushed its weight against Nuri's hand before taking off at a much quicker pace, rushing away from Nuri and into the sands.

Sighing once more, Nuri felt his shoulders drop as he moved back to the path. Today would not be the day to tame a beast, as he had no reason to chase after it. His job was done, and it was time to head home.

[ BB ] Summer Cleaning [ BB ]

[- Sulburi -]

Nuri was making his way back to his old training grounds. It had been weeks since he had last been there, his mind focused on his new profession and the new weapons he now had at his disposal. Eventually, as he saw the new recruits, he recalled the weapons he had stored and the need to return them to their rightful place. Eventually, someone new would use them on their path to the army.

As he walked down the path to the old town, he couldn't help but feel a bit nostalgic. It felt like ages ago that he was just a recruit, working hard until the sun was down before turning in to start it all the next day. Every day had been a struggle to find himself and prove himself to others, and now it was simply honing what he had and working hard to move on up. The struggle was different, but worth it all the same.

As he neared the alleyway and his final destination, Nuri was happy to see that things were not amiss. The training dummies were still sitting strong in the center, and his little hideaway was sealed tight. No one had journeyed or taken over the location, which meant that if he ever needed to return, he could do so without any fear of intruders.

Stretching out, he focused on the training dummies first, slowly dismantling them until the ground was covered in straw and fabric. Folding the fabric up, he made a stack to the side. It would be useful when he got the weapons, as the fabric would make the perfect sling.

Now that he was done with the training area, Nuri moved to face the small storage room he had created. Taking a deep breath, he walked close and opened the door, a flash of a memory causing his muscles to tense. No Perzi mob overcame him, and after a long second he let out a breathy laugh.

It was only then that he heard the deep growl of a creature. Glancing around, a small hole let in a strip of light into the room, showing off the practice weapons he had accumulated. Within those weapons he saw three sets of eyes, and he waited a long moment to determine if there would be any other eyes flashing in the low light. When no more appeared, he began to check his current status against the three animals.

Foolishly, he had left his whip in the training grounds. There was no chance he would encounter something, or so he had assumed. Now, it was all a game of will.

"Alright, let's try and stay calm..." Nuri said in a low, soothing voice. The first lessons he had been taught were how to approach an animal, especially unarmed. Lowering himself slightly, he attempted to make himself less of a threat despite the fact he was blocking the largest exit. When he made move to get closer, another growl sounded from inside the room, causing him to immediately still.

Slowly, three Perzi came out with bright eyes and growling teeth. They were all full grown, and seemed to be part of a family. They looked ready to strike, and Nuri fully realized his foolishness (yet again). Being perceived as a threat, he was fully blocking their major exit and appearing as if he were the predator. Taking a slow step back, Nuri had only a second before the three were on him.

Once more, he flew out of the storage area and onto the ground, his back cushioned by the straw but his front wide open. Claws scratched at his skin, and he quickly pulled his arms above his face to protect it from the animals. The three were quick, and the hissing and spitting filled the air for a long moment before the three animals rushed away from his body and out of the alley.

Arms falling back down to his sides, Nuri once more looked up high and cursed his luck. This was the second time he was attacked by Perzi in the area, and he didn't think to check and ensure there would be no leftover creatures. Pushing himself off his back and to his feet, he examined the superficial wounds. The deepest one was, of course, to his pride. It would be an interesting story to tell once he went to a healer, but he had something more important to focus on.

This time, he would take all of the training weapons out, and leave the straw inside. If the animals wanted to use it as their home, he really couldn't do much to stop them. It was dry, protected them from Obans, and was far enough away to let the Perzi live a peaceful life.

With that thought in mind, Nuri spent the rest of the day prepping the area before heading back home, promising to stay away from the room anytime he returned in the future.

Another day, another hunt. Nuri found himself finally settled in a routine, answering any call for him to go out and tame the beasts of the lands. It wasn't glory, it wasn't war, but it was something to do and he was learning quite a bit in the process.

He now knew the best way to lure a zore was with the soft flesh of preserved wards. He now knew that Quahar were more likely to startle if he approached from the side, and their blind spot was a great way to get a chord around their neck. He now knew that Xaraan were possibly more dangerous than Janarim thanks to their speed, height, and willingness to peck at the face.

So at least, at the end of a long day of wrangling, he was learning something new and valuable. Yet, it was beginning to get old, and he was feeling the urge to do something more.

That thought filled his head as he made way to a report of three territorial Impa threatening a new settlement. In his mind, it would make more sense to move the settlement and not the heard, but he wasn't one to vocalize his questions. Instead, he approached the settlement where the larger heard once lived, and now only three stubborn ones remained to retake claim on their territory.

Nuri was used to ignoring the settlers in these locations, after all they were quite apt at making things more difficult than they needed to be. He moved around the tents, ignored the grumbling, and approached the low level Impa that were clearly displeased.

There was no need for words, he was simply running them off. Signalling to Naraka to circle around to the side, they would corral them away from the settlers and toward the rest of the displaced herd. What a shame that the Obans felt the need to displace such glorious creatures, instead focusing on the ones of value to tame.

Shaking his head, he moved forward and Naraka did the same. Their partnership was effortless at this point, thanks mostly to him raising the beast since he was a little whelp. In fact, as he snapped his whip, Naraka moved and scared two of the three back, their tails fleeting in the sand.

The third, however, made to dart for the smaller threat.

Nuri moved to dart to the side, but his ankle was hit by the flat head of the Impa slammed to his side. It felt like a burning slice, but glancing down he didn't see any sort of major damage. A scratch really, filled with sand and grime and bound to bother him until he could clean it out properly. Grunting, Nuri moved to stand and glanced at Naraka. The beast was smart enough to stay still, but the low growl coming from his companion was a major sign of his anger at what had just occurred.

Darting to the side, Nuri made sure that the beast would focus on him and him alone. They were still close to the settlement, and he didn't miss the curious eyes of the Obans who were not smart enough to stay away. One wrong move, and the impa would rush them instead, resulting in potential injury and reprimands.

So, Nuri made the decision to rush the beast in turn, using his whip to intimidate and force the impa back. Maybe it would work, maybe it wouldn't, but Naraka near his side did help add to the intimidation factor. The impa recoiled and backed off, but its tail snapped and its jaw opened to show off some dangerous teeth. It waved its head back and forth in a slashing motion, another attempt to intimidate right back. It seemed this one was keen to not back down.

Nuri made to rush the creature once more, his whip cracking loudly in the silence. Naraka growled at the same time, and the impa startled. For a long moment, it seemed to back up, before it rushed back at Nuri one last time. The flat head slammed into Nuri's other leg as he dodged to the side, and this time Naraka rushed fully to run the impa off.

Nuri was down, and both of his ankles were starting to swell. Cursing under his breath, he pushed himself to his feet and pushed away the pain from his mind. The settlement was right there, and the Obans were watching. He accomplished his goal, but he was not pleased. It would be a long walk home and it would be spent mentally licking his wounds.

He loved his job, but sometimes he hated it as well.

Nuri was out in the wilds once more, this time traveling to an Oban army camp near the Matori border. There was no threat of war, but often they would set up camps to show their power and discourage others from venturing too far inland. It was necessary, considering how fresh the wounds were with all nationalities in Tendaji.

Reports stated that there were a few wild Perzi going through the stores at the camp, leaving the Obans disgruntled and cranky. Considering his last few interactions, Nuri was not too excited about the idea of Perzi hunting, as the creatures had bested him more often than not.

When he finally arrived to the camp, he found a bunch of soldiers crowded around a makeshift cage. He fought the urge to groan as he walked over with Naraka, all but shoving through to see the two Perzi hissing and spitting.

"When you sent word that there was a problem, we directed you to not engage!" He growled out after a moment, knowing the fools made his job infinitely more difficult.

"Well you took too long, beastboy, and we saw the chance to catch it ourselves."

Nuri ignored the words, knowing some saw them as weak for fighting with creatures instead of their own hands. Either way, he snapped out his whip with a harsh crack and glared at the speaker, "Yes, please make it harder to deal with them by closing them off in a non-transportable cage and mocking them to a frenzy. How very astute of you."

He ignored their squawking and shook his head, "Get out of here and let me do my job, or else I'll speak to the superiors and let them know you'd rather play with pets than keep our borders safe."

As they walked away, he was quite happy with his threat. He had a job to do, and they were just in the way.

Turning, he debated how he would do this, and simply decided to hit the cage off of them. It was light enough, and he should be able to grab it with his whip and lift it high enough. Moving to corral them away from the main camp and toward the exit, he quickly acted and pulled the cage to its side, watching as one scampered off in the right direction.

The other, however, grew angry and hissed, moving to strike. Nuri moved out of the way and shouted for Naraka to jump in his place, scaring the creature a moment before he snapped his whip and began to encourage the animal to move back out of the camp. The other was nowhere to be seen, which was good enough for Nuri as he moved slowly away from the prying eyes and foolish Obans.

After a long few moments, they were fully out of the camp and in the light of the day, and Nuri found himself facing a frustrated Perzi that refused to run off. Well, if it didn't want to leave, maybe he could tame it and take it back himself. It was always worth a shot.

As they had their stand down in the sun, Nuri signaled for Naraka to move back. There was no need to appear as a threat, and he knew that Perzi were territorial and fickle creatures. Instead, he pulled out some dried meats that he brought just in case, and gently bent to his needs to make himself less threatening.

Letting out soft cooing noises, he threw a meat half-way between the two of them. The Perzi stiffened, but didn't move closer, and Nuri resisted the urge to roll his eyes. Instead, he tossed another bit of meat closer to the creature, watching for any signs of fear or frustration in the animal.

Another long silence and a stare down, and the Perzi looked somewhat interested. It didn't move closer, so Nuri tossed one last one right before the animal, and swore out loud as the creature startled and darted off into the rocks away from the camp. Groaning, Nuri fell back on his butt and looked over to Naraka, no words between them. Instead, he held out the rest of the meat for his familiar, and gave a frustrated smirk.

"Next time, I'm sure we will catch one...let's get out of the sand and head home."

Nuri determined to attend the great festival in Oba. This year, he knows that a lot of non-Obans would be around, and that there was a chance for some sort of tension. Despite that, he attempted to focus on finding Aseara and making an effort to apologize for their last encounter. He succeeds in finding her, but not before there are cries for Oba to march and aid Sauti.

Uncertain, and not too happy about the decision, Nuri knows he must go anyway. If the King determines they are needed, he is not one to question his orders.
