Dexurn didn't know how much time had passed since he'd been free. Though, 'free' was a relative term.

He.. was lost.

Dexurn hugged the over-sized vest tighter around himself, his tired feet dragged in the sand. The morning sun was going to rise soon, and he would need to find another place to hunker down for the day. Traveling when the sun was out was just too darned hot! Yet, if he hadn't pushed himself to walk just a little further, a little bit of sunlight showing the way, he would never have noticed the change of terrain.

He looked down as his nearly numb feet hit compact sand rather than the loose earth he'd been traversing. Looking around, Dex felt a little flutter of hope. It was a road! A real one! Maybe it would lead to a town! And water! And food! At the least, another traveler who could spare some directions... He licked his dry lips, and started following the path, hoping to get as far as he could before the sun sent him into hiding.

Nuri was exhausted.

It wasn't often that he had to pull a long shift, but tonight had been one of them. To his side, Naraka trudged along with a much more alert head than he, leaving the Oban frustrated and grumbling. Curse the Janarim for his endless energy and night-time activity. Huffing a bit, Nuri was still glad that his scouting had proved meaningless and he was released from the path to head home before the sun fully raised.

He would rest heavy after he got some food inside of him.

Walking down the long path back to Sulburi, he kept his head low and ignored the heat, thinking about everything and nothing at the same time. It wasn't until he heard the slight grunt of Naraka that he looked up, catching the creature's tell that something was sighted ahead.

Someone was walking his way, by themself. Hopefully it was not a bandit, as Nuri was in no mood for a brawl.

The road seemed to stretch on forever... Though, truly, Dexurn hadn't been trained for long distances. After all, he'd never really left the mansion grounds until he'd been forced to travel to the hiding house. At least he'd had others with him on that trip for company... Short bursts of energy? He could do that. These long treks? ...not so much.

He was thinking about hunkering down for the day when he noticed the shapes ahead. Dex squinted his dry eyes, wondering if he was imagining it... but no! The forms became clearer, and he smiled with delight. Never mind the nerves that fluttered in his belly at the prospect of meeting a stranger. The tiniest inckling of hope buoyed his resolve. "Hel-" he started to call, though he had to pause and clear his throat a few times. He really was dried out. "Hello!" he managed the second time.

After that though, he froze, stopping short as the nerves broke through the need. ...What was he supposed to do now? He was used to fetching drinks for others, not requesting a drink himself... And this was an Oban! "Um... may I.. can you.. spare.. a little.. water?" he asked hesitantly, already leaning away from the man slightly as though afraid of getting yelled at for requesting anything.

A greeting, that was a good sign. Still, Nuri approached with an air of caution and kept a keen eye on their surroundings. He took note that it was dead silent around them, and as he looked back at Dexurn, he caught sight of his hesitation. Why was he stalling? This seemed a bit strange, and made Nuri wonder just how long he had been out in this heat.

Not to mention he was Matorian...a wandering Matori this far out in the desert was never a good sign.

"Hello..." He greeted slowly, halting a good distance away and flicking his wrist for his Janarim to do the same, "...traveling alone this far from the city?"

Oh, maybe he really wasn't supposed to ask for anything. Maybe it wasn't just a slavery thing? Well, at the least he wasn't being yelled at. That was a good sign. His eyes slipped over to the Janarim, a small smile lifting. It was good to see something familiar. It did make him wish he was back home with the group he'd tended to... Where were they now?

"I.. don't know where the.. where the city is," he replied, eyes dropping slightly. Was he supposed to know? Was him being alone a bad thing? He didn't want to be alone...

Nuri continued to keep his eyes on a swivel, looking around with interest just to ensure there would be no ambush. He was tired, exhausted even, but that didn't stop his mind from rushing to keep everything in check.

"The city? You are on a main road...either direction would take you to a city. It all depends on where you want to go..." He responded slowly, curious why the Matorian was in Oba. Was he tried to head home, or into the city? The city was closer, but it was no place for someone from Matori at this time.

At that, Dexurn hesitated again and looked around. Depended on where he wanted to go... "I want to go to Matori, but I want to earn some water and food for the trip. I was told Matori is far away." He looked over to the Oban with a cautiously hopeful look. "Do you happen to know where I could go to do that?"

It figured that the kid wanted to return home. Nuri waved for Naraka to keep moving away from the two, and the beast did so without hesitation.

"You aren't terribly far, actually. I just came from a patrol on the border. It maybe is half a day at a decent pace, a full day if you take your time. There is no major city right at the border, but it will get you into the territory all the same."

He hesitated a moment, but did not offer to escort the kid that path, however, the food and water comment didn't sit well, "You have no rations...in this heat?"

Maybe he wasn't trained enough, but he couldn't tell if kid was dehydrated or not. What color did Matori really appear as? It was hard to see with all that blue.

Dexurn perked up a little bit. He really wasn't far? Wow. A day's walk wasn't long at all! He was very excited to hear that. He wouldn't even need much food for the trip. Just a decent amount of water. He was used to living on the minimum anyway~

He looked up at the question and shook his head. "I did... just not anymore." Seeing how capable the Oban held himself, Dex felt his cheeks heat up. "The last time I stopped to sleep, someone took the food I had. Not that I had much anyway." It wasn't as though anyone gave him provisions after freeing him.

Nuri wasn't surprised that the little thing lost his rations, in fact he expected as much. Matori weren't suited for being on their own, especially if they were slaves. Going from having a home and a job to nothing at all was bound to leave the creatures needing more.

Smart enough to not voice it, Nuri shook his head before waving his familiar over.

"Despite our best intentions, snakes still slink through our sands. It's best to travel with a caravan, and make sure you have hired guards. The bandits are taking advantage of the open boarders more and more these days.."

Pulling out a spare waterskin, he moved back to the Matori and kept his face blank, all before handing it over for Dexurn to drink.

Dexurn's eyes shifted away. He had been with a caravan... He'd started out fine, it seemed. The journey itself was more difficult than expected though. He was being separated from everyone and everything...

He looked up cautiously as the Oban walked toward him, afraid he was about to get scolded. Then, the waterskin showed up, and Dex lit up like a bulb. "Thank you!" he said eagerly. He was careful to keep his place though, politely accepting the water and taking only a few gulps. He held the skin back out to Nuri and smiled with relief. That was the most delicious thing ever! "Is there anything you wish of me in return?" he asked automatically. Growing up, no one other than his fellow slaves gave him anything without expecting a return; and even some of the slaves expected a return sometimes.
