Poor Papa
Eden smiled and adjusted the little cameo pin that held her little shawl in place. It was officially autumn now, but it was still warm enough that she didn't really need a true jacket, the little loosely woven cover would more then suit what she had in mind. She slipped on some sensible little flats - She really didn't have that many so it was a bit of a challenge to find a pait that matched her outfit.
Yes, tonight was going to be fantastic. There was a magical evening planned out, dinner, a little outing to a pumpkin patch that was JUST open for the season, and then desert at a little cafe before going back home.
To the unsuspecting eye, it would appear that the petite woman was preparing for a date. And she was. Kinda.
She was going to spend the evening with her father, the same way that they had ever sense Mr. Catling had found himself a single father to a wide eyed little girl who had been pretty much raised exclusively by her mother. It was the same evening, exactly has it had been for all these years, and if was always something neither of them ever missed. Her father had taken time off of work, and she had forsworn school.
October first took place on a Thursday this year, so she was going to play hooky.
" You ready kitty-cat? " Her father called from the living room. Grabbing her purse she grinned and met up with him. Anyone looking at the two of them could tell they were related. Frederick Catling was tall, but he held that same willowy bone structure that his daughter had. The only main difference was that papa catling had a LITTLE bit of a belly. Oh anyone looking at him would still think he was a tall and slender man, but where is daughter was trim and slender from her strict diet and constant exercise from gardening, Fred had a teeny bit of a pooch from scarfing down hot pockets and Doritos whenever his well meaning, but health nut vegetarian daughter wasn't looking.
" But of course ' She said with a grin. Her papa picked up a hat, which he had warn for years. A simple black fedora, which he had worn as far back as Eva could remember. So long that it had gone out of fashion, back in fashion, and out of fashion again all without him even knowing. She shook her head and slung her purse over her shoulder. She would have to buy him some new shirts soon.... She would get her shiny new gardening shovels that if she looked in his brief case right now there was a half eaten bag of doritos stuffed guiltily in there. Not that she could blame him. The cafe they were going for specialized in vegetarian cuisine, and while he personally thought of it as hampster food, he had been taking her there sense she was a very twiggy little wisp of an elementary schooler.
Left to his own devices the man would eat nothing but frozen dinners and junk food and be content. But that hadn't been his fate. Fate had been losing his wife to illness, and having a green eyed little girl harp on him when he tried to serve PB & J for the seventh night in a row for dinner because he didn't really know how to make anything else. Eva knew that her father missed his wife with such ferocity that at times it would bring him to his knees... knew that sometimes when he looked at her, he would see the ghost of his wife. And she knew that even still, it was a wound that had never really healed, and so still hurt him.
Only, she didn't know that even though Frederick still missed his wife, he couldn't imagine his life any other way than it was now. Having watched his little girl grow up into a woman so like her mother it was almost like that kind spirit had never left.
