Finding the Balance

“Sydney, honey, is something wrong? You’re picking at your food. Usually you gobble it down right from the start,” her mother worriedly questioned.

The redhead yawned, shaking her head. “Naw, that ain’t it. Been really tired and all, studying and doing homework, you know?” She lied casually, drowsy eyes staring down at her spaghetti and meatballs as her fingers idly twirled the fork, watching the noodles wrap around her utensil. Not quite the truth, but not quite a lie either.

She was indeed incredibly tired. If it wasn’t for her rumbling stomach, Sydney would have immediately dragged herself up the stairs and fallen into bed without a peep from her. It was odd, very odd. But not as odd as that night a few weeks ago. Perhaps the memory was not as crisp and clear as the first day, but the images still flashed in her mind from time to time. A manx (she had bothered to actually look the breed up online and she was pretty sure it was a manx) that turned into a girl. A blond girl decked out in senshi uniform. A walking doll.

Slurping up the last of her dinner, she collected her plate and gently placed it in the sink, the glass clinking as it softly dropped. Mumbling a soft goodnight to the rest of her familiar and ignoring the teasing cries of her brothers, she trudged upstairs. The wood squeaked under her weight, creaking all the way into her bedroom as she flopped onto her bed and relished the soft feel of her comforter and pillow. Heavy eyelids peacefully dropped as Sydney lay there, drowning in her thoughts and the silence of her surroundings.

Who knew that she would be this tired after such a short period of time?

Groaning, she rolled onto her back and stared at the ceiling. She looked over at the clock, the time dimly glowing in the darkness of her room. Perhaps I’ll take a short nap, Sydney decided, slowly closing her eyes and drifting off.

When she woke up, she discovered that she had slept far longer than she had originally planned. Sleepy eyes gazed at the clock, waiting for the image to come into focus. “Wha . . . crap.”

Sydney scrambled out of bed, flipping over and plopping to the floor with a soft thud. She wheezed. Pain. Pain. Pain. Biting down on her lip, she forced herself up to her feet. Her gaze was focused on the shut door, waiting for someone—her mother, one of her brothers, anyone—to come crawling in and asking her what was wrong, but it never happened.

She was surprised when she let go of the gasp she had been holding in. Silently, Sydney checked for any scratches and bruises from the fall. When she found none she hobbled over to the window, pushing it open as quietly as possible. She eased out of the opening and gently closed the window.

Watching the heavenly shine of the moon cast an unearthly glow on the neighborhood, Sydney shook her head. Focus! She fished out a pen from one of her back pockets, feeling its smooth surface against her skin while she ran down the street—Sydney Martin was no longer there.

Sailor Sinon slowed to a halt, pausing to stare back at her house. All the lights were out as it stood against the backdrop of the night sky. “I wanted to bring out my skateboard this time, but I suppose that’ll be another time,” she whispered after a moment of silence.

Idly stretching her arms she strolled off towards downtown to begin her patrol. She may be ready to fall down dead, but Sinon still had things to take care of.

The Light at the End of the Tunnel

After endless days of sullenly trekking around Destiny City, ranging from the residential area to the shops, to the very heart of the town to the very outskirts, there was an end to the seemingly-endless depression. It had been an eye opener to the girl. She realized just how lonely she could be. From a young age she had always clung to someone, perhaps a friend or classmate or family, but Sydney never liked to be completely on her own. The lack of human presence made her body run cold, where all the jolly warmth that soaked her very blood seemed to drain away. Constantly wandering around a ghost town didn’t exactly alleviate the matter either.

When Sydney first heard of the awakenings of the comatose patients that littered the city hospital, she was frozen. For once, the talkative child was rendered mute. It had been one of the numerous times the redhead was surfing the television channels, idly flipping to the next show after a few minutes of observing failed to grip her attention. However, after switching for the millionth did the words “PATIENTS WAKE UP” flashing across the screen enraptured her like a spell. Mouth open and speechless, her grasp on the remote gradually loosened until it fell to the ground with a large clack (at least no one was home to worriedly rush in and check up on her).

She wasn’t going to say that she covered her face and began to bawl like the lonely yet relieved child she was, because she didn’t. No. There were no streaming tear marks on Sydney’s face nor was her freckled face puffy from madly sobbing. That would be a complete and utter lie.

While eager excitement overtook her feelings of initial shock, she jumped over to the front door where her trusty skateboard lay. Although incredibly morose for the past few days—weeks? Months?--- Sydney’s board had loyally remained by her side as she traveled around to rid the empty feelings she had previously been drowning in.

Sydney bent forward to smoothly scoop up the thin block of wood into her arms just before she roughly pulled on her converses. If the people who had previously been asleep were waking up, that obviously meant that her parents could wake up soon as well! Bubbling with excitement at the prospect of finally being reunited with them after so long, she rushed to the hospital.

She sped through the spotless hallways, ignoring the unsettling smell of disinfect as she took familiar turns and twists. Turns and twists that Sydney had constantly taken to her parents’ room. Without a care she slammed open the door, coming face to face with the tired face of her father.

“Daddy! Daddy Daddy Daddy I’ve missed you so much!” Her voice high and full of puerile innocence, she took one long stride forward to wrap her gangly arms around her father’s broad shoulders. Although he was once a strong and sturdy man, Sydney could notice how the months of sleeping had sucked away his strength.

His breathless laughter tickling her ears, Jack gladly hugged his only daughter back. “Your brothers still haven’t visited me yet. Why am I not surprised?” he joked, playfully ruffling her messy hair.

Her curious gaze spotting the still figure of her mother in the neighboring bed, she loosened her hold on Jack to silently stare at Annie. Jack followed Sydney’s eyes to look at his wife, his eyes growing steely and far off. “Your mother hasn’t woken up . . . yet.” He paused on the last word, saying it with such conviction. Yes, she would wake up eventually.

Sydney tightly gripped the back of his nightgown, her lips tightened shut as she continued to longingly observe Annie. Yet? She could only wish to be as hopeful as her father, but even after Jack had checked out of the hospital she still visit. Sometimes she would give her mother one pained look before fleeing to the rooms of her waiting friends while other times she would sit and blankly stare at Annie for hours on end. Days passed. Then a week. Weeks.

Mother was never going to wake up.
