...Can`t convince those sharding new-meats to stay out of S`van`s old bunk!
...Shards, I've been tossing them out by the leg all day! I leave for a minute, and suddenly someone's unpacked! It's madness, I tell you, madness!
...I wasn't expecting S`van to come back, though. Thought he'd have better things to do, now that he's got Galliath. But he did. Guess he likes the bunks better here than wherever the Weyrlings are supposed to be. Seems strange, but hey, why argue?
...He's not the only unexpected room-mate that joined in today, either. Nose. Really. Nose! Sounds like it's even more crowded at the girl's barracks!
...Dunno how long we can keep this together before the Candidatemaster breaks it up, but shards, at least these two know about bathing. Better than most the fardlers that tried shoving their way in here.
...Plus, you know... friends.

...I think... I think I`m gonna puke....
...Sharding Candidatemaster, making me run laps... so what if I finished work early? I'm a good worker, and it's not like they're giving me anything hard to do, anyway!
...Met an interesting girl, Kadri, while I was out. Interesting meaning, she draws firelizards like nobody's business. Seems like there are a million of the buggers around the Weyr. Kind of makes me wistful.

...We opened shop today!
...Business ain't too bad, let me tell you! Would've been better if S`van and I'd gotten this together a few days earlier, though; lots of folks have already cut off their hair, rather than itch. But we still got a couple customers, and I hear talk buzzing.
...Met a hell of a jackass today, though. Some greenrider named E`si. You should've seen the way he went off on Kyllae - I could've pounded him! Probably should've, all things considered. But I think I can come up with something better than that, given time....
...Ah well. But business is good, so why worry? That's for another day, when my pockets are full and there's nothing to be trading. For now, better get to bed - the earlier I sleep today, the sooner I can sell tomorrow!

...Got some real bad news from the Hold while I was chatting it up around the stall today. Feeling a bit sick to my stomach now. Not sure what to do. At least I guess there's good trade going on in Ista.
...Don't know if I could face him. Already know what he's saying. Don't want to know anymore. Don't want others to hear about it.
...Got a lot of work to do around here. Gotta get through it fast, so I can keep up with the business. Making some decent marks already.
...Fardles, though! Why couldn't he have kept away?! At least until I'd Impressed!
...Why did I fail? The only thing worse than being a traitor is being a failure.
...They're in the Hold, though. The Hold is okay. Just don't let them come to the Weyr, by Faranth, please!
...Wish I could see my sister, though, and my mother. Would be nice to see Jaenel too. Maybe they aren't so mad at me. Fardling wishful thinking there, though, they've gotta be poisoned against me by now.

...Against my better judgment, I went to the Gather.
...It started off okay. Met this odd little girl, Kagiya, who is apparently S`kagi`s daughter - shards, you should've seen the way Nose`s face lit up when I let her in on the secret! Helped out Inaari from the kitchens, and she helped me pick out some presents in return. Got pretty confident after a while, figured that I was worrying over nothing.
...You`d think that I`d have known better.
...Got back to the Weyr, got by the Healers. Now trying to be smart and keep my head down for a while. No fall-out from the fight with Jaenel yet, at least.
...Would it be wrong to want to Impress, just to prove them wrong? It won't make a difference if I did. The only thing worse than wanting this and failing, would probably be wanting this and succeeding. I don't think there's anyone outside the Weyr that'd be happy for me.
...Well, Gemea might....
...Jaenel said she didn't. But he could be a liar. Shards, he is a liar... gotta be!
...Didn't want to deal with this. Should've just stayed at the Weyr. What a dimglow I am.
...Can't spend too much time thinking it over. Gotta keep things together. Gonna be more important stuff going on soon. Keep the eye on the prize, right? I got nothing to do with the caravan anymore. That's obvious enough. My future's at the Weyr, and I'd better put everything I've got into it. Faranth knows, I don't have a future anywhere else now.

...Touching today - early in the morning, as usual.
...There's some seriously big eggs this time around - bronzes for sure, no doubts, none! Can't help but feel excited. Maybe this is my chance?
...Trying to ask myself if it's so important. Every boy's gotta want a bronze. They're the big ones, the important ones. The bronzeriders are the leaders of Weyr and Wing, the strength in the Weyr. Who shouldn't want that?
...I know what I want. I know what I need. I'm not here to just be a rider - I'm here to be the rider. The one that rises above the rest, the one that makes the changes. The one that moves Pern forward, when most just let it stagnate.
...Can I do that with a brown? Or a blue, or a green?
...What about the dragon themselves? I know so little! Is there a difference in cadre between the dragons, other than size? Do leaders among dragons depend on the color they hatch into?
...If it were the right dragon - the strong one, the ready one, the one that would be perfect and help me bring newness and readiness to Pern... it wouldn't matter. We'd do everything, and the rest wouldn't matter.
...As long as there's one for me at all.

...Ukteneth... and I. We went to the Feast together.
...Later, we will be leaving this alcove and moving into a weyr. S'van and I will share one, for certain; maybe get a third roommate as well. Think that Nose is bunking with another girl, now that she can.
...This is the last time I will write in this journal. It's gotten me to the point I need. It's not important like it was before, not to me. There's a loose rock in the Lower Caverns, covering up a little cranny. I will put these pages there, and start anew.
...I wonder what people will think of me when this is found. If it will be found while I'm still living. If I will have a reputation outside of the Healers' hall by then - no, not if. What reputation I will have, together with Uktenath.
...Thread will fall by the time I am dead. Uktenath and I will fight it. Galliath and S'van, and Reneneth and Nose, and J'riar and Ianquith; Zara and Fuxith, Jessmet and Ailurath, Annelie and Yansanth; others I know, others I don't, those who've found their Bondeds, those who haven't, those who never will but will be soldiers anyway. We'll all fight it. Together or divided.
