Things hadn't gone so great for Okassis since arriving back at the Weyr early from the Gather. Having to report to the Healers' again had been a humiliating experience - they mostly knew him by name now, but were more likely just to refer to him as "that Trader". Not even just "that" Trader, but "that" Trader, with the groan and moan and the assurance that anytime he came, trouble was sure to follow. After getting some numbweed for his ear and something that would help the swelling, he'd been sent off and told, with an exasperating sigh that promised no faith, to please stay out of trouble!

He hadn't been sure where S'van had gotten to, so hadn't bothered trying to catch up with him until the following day. Which was just as well, because the gift he'd gotten for S'van had been in desperate need of washing after his skirmish with Jaenel. He'd let it soak in water overnight, snuck out from the crowded alcove early the next morning, and scrubbed it vigorously for nearly a whole candlemark.

By the time his work was completed, his fingers were pruned and any tiny trace of grime on his own hands had been washed clean. But for his efforts, the scent of flowery perfume was contained mildly to one or two spots in the cloth - about as good as it would get, he decided.

Heading outside and seeing a sunny and clear sky overhead, he found a rock to lay the frilly apron out on, set himself up on a comfortable piece of ground with his whittling knife and a sizable chunk of wood, and got to busying his hands. It would probably another candlemark or so before the apron would be dry, and then, finally, he could present it to his friend. Scraping at the wood, Okassis grinned to himself, imagining what S'van's reaction would be to the thoughtful gift. One to remember, for sure....

"No, Kia, I am not going to feed you right this second, all right? Gall needs a bath." Galliath, the brown corrected his rider almost absently. At this point they'd had that particular argument quite a few times. "Galliath," S'van amended. Nothing was going to stop the weyrling from thinking of and speaking of his dragonet the way he did, but he could certainly try to accommodate him.

... Oh, all right. A little bit of food couldn't hurt anything, and he really couldn't stand to hear the firelizard begging like that. It tugged at his heart strings. Reaching into his belt pouch, he withdrew a meatroll, which the flitter pounced on immediately. Shrieking her victory over the already very dead food, Kia wrapped her tail around S'van's wrist, holding on as tightly as she could to keep her balance.

Oy. It was hard enough handling a dragonet, but the added complication of a firelizard had S'van at his wit's end. Can we bathe now, mine? The water is cool and the sun is warm! Where is Miith? "Not here, Gall- ... iath." He was trying to get around to the bathing thing, as it was one of his duties anyway. First Galliath needed a bath, and then he'd need to be oiled. It had been drilled into his head how very important oiling his dragonet was, and he had not yet forgotten his brown's daily oiling.

As he walked outside, he caught sight of a rather familiar profile. He couldn't quite be sure if it was Okassis sitting there, but he was almost positive. Almost. "Kas?" he called out, trying to figure out what the shells the thing that was stretched out like that was. He drew nearer, flanked by a brown shadow, and a tiny green one.

The Trader's head perked up at the sound of his name. S'van's growing procession of dragon, rider, and flitt wasn't hard for him to spot out, either; he split into a grin. "Hey, just the gent I wanted to see!" Okassis cheered, glancing down briefly as he tucked his knife into his belt before standing.

The apron wasn't exactly dry yet, but it didn't seem like he had the time to wait for it to dry out. As his friend approached, Okassis snagged the neck of it with one hand. "Got a present for you from Gather!" he called out, flinging the wet cloth at his friend's face with remarkable aim. He then seated himself on the rock, wearing his biggest trader smirk yet as he waited for S'van to puzzle out what it was he'd been handed. "Inaari helped me pick it out," he put in helpfully. "We both thought it was perfect."

Of course, at some point, his attention had to turn to the flitt that seemed to be dogging his friend. Okassis's lips pursed slightly, his brows tightened a smidgen - "What's that, now?" he asked, knowing perfectly well what it was.

By now, he really, really ought to be used to having things thrown at his head. Strangely enough, he definitely wasn't used to it enough to stop the flying bit of cloth from smacking him full in the face. The damp bit of cloth. Pulling it away from his skin, he looked it over.

S'van blanched, and then quite suddenly he flushed. "... Kas? Um. ... You bought me a dress?" Not only had Okassis bought him a dress, he had bought him a backless dress. What exactly was Kas trying to pull here? "... You... haven't been paying too much attention to what Nan's been s-saying, have you?"

With worried eyes, he looked between Okassis and the dress. A frilly, backless dress! What was Kas thinking? And Inaari had helped to pick it out? Perfect. How exactly was it perfect? And, more to the point, perfect for what? He was pretty sure that he hadn't seen Kas at the Feast. That meant that Kas didn't know about his... er, mishap.

"Uhhh... it's a pest," he said, proud that he had been able to think around the sharding moment of panic. "They call them firelizards, Kas. ... Also it's a Green. Shardit, you were right." He had Impressed a Green, hadn't he?

A look of shock and offense crossed Okassis's face almost immediately. "Of course I was right!" the Trader exclaimed, rolling his eyes in a tremendous arc. He was so astounded that his friend should question his predictions, in fact, that he felt obligated to say it again with stronger emphasis; "By the Egg, S'van. Of course I was right!"

Now Okassis had to act annoyed by his friend's lack of faith, and he did so with a splendid snort and crossing of his arms. It worked out really nicely, actually; beneath the facade of frowny faces and tight stares, it was easy enough for Okassis to bury a real sense of apprehension as he eyed the little Green that had taken after his friend. Shards... Okassis had only ever come upon a firelizard egg once in his whole life. How was it that S'van had laid his hands on not just one, but two since coming to the Weyr? Plus Impressing? Did his friend have some sort of bizarre dragon magnetism that Okassis hadn't seen before?

There was a certain amount of envy threatening to show, and it was better off drowned in a wave of irrelevance. "Well," he fluttered his eyes with a smile, "that picture she got me of you was awfully darling, you know. And just think of the sort of picture she could get me if you posed in this!"

"I'm sorry Okassis! Of course you were right!" Melodramatic as always. Truth be told, S'van himself did not know how he had managed to get his hands on two firelizard eggs. Well... the one had been fairly simple. He'd gone looking for a good gift for 'Naari, and someone had been trying desperately to get rid of the soon to be hatched egg. Come to think of it, that seemed to be the pattern. Each time that he had gotten his hands on a flitter egg, it had been because the other person wanted it off his hands. How odd. Put that way, it wasn't even remotely impressive that he had managed to score two of them, and each one a little green.

With a resounding 'KRII!' of excitement, Kia tumbled through the air and landed square in the front pocket of the apron. A lot of scrambling and scuffling noises ensued, a green tail lashing in the air for a time before... Before S'van heard the soft hum of a happy firelizard. Was she nesting in his dress? "Uhh... Kia? Kia, I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to sleep in there." The tail disappeared, and a tiny wedge-shaped head took its place. "Queep?" the flit inquired, eyes whirling with happy blues and greens, staring up between Okassis and S'van.

Sharding flit! "P-Picture? Oh Faranth, you mean... you want me to wear it like that?" No way. Noooo waaaay. There was no way Okassis could possibly mean that, was there? "Y-Y-You want me... t-to p-pose in that?" Oh Faranth what was Kas thinking? Darling picture. ... Not darling. Definitely not darling. Were his eyes a little wide? He was pretty sure that they were. Ack! Okassis was fluttering his eyelashes at him! S'van almost dropped the 'dress', forgetting the precious cargo that it contained. Fortunately, the thing was tangled up in his hands now, and it wasn't easy to drop.

That's right he'd been right. Okassis smiled toothily, thinking - not for the first time, not for the last - how fortunate he was to have a friend that would accommodate his humors so willingly. Gall was one lucky dragon, for sharding sure....

"Well, it might as well be a flitt pocket," observed the youth somberly of Kia's antics. The little green was terribly cute, he admitted to himself, despite his jealousy. Stooping down to get a better look at the young lizard, he asked, "How'd you get your hands on this one, anyway? Charm her with that seaholder smile, eh? Or maybe she just likes the smell of fish."

And as usual, wide-eyed S'van was falling right into another gullibility trap. There really wasn't much sport in it at this point, but the ex-Trader never could resist pushing at something until it broke, and S'van's masculinity was such an old favorite!

Helpfully catching up part of the apron when it seemed that the brownrider was about to drop it (ignoring altogether the fact that the apron was in no real danger), Okassis let his hold on it linger as he gazed deeply into the Weyrling's eyes, and breathed with an astonishing imitation of sincere passion - "And nothing else."

His eyebrows were going to take up permanent residence up near his hairline. "F-Faranth, Kas, what are you talking like that for?" Oh Shells that sharding flush. There went his masculine pride and self assurance, all in one fell swoop. Okassis could be remarkably convincing with his insanity, but S'van was sure-- was absolutely sure!-- that he was shamming. He had to be. "S-Stop that, Okassis!" He shoved at his friend, trying to conceal the deep dismay that came of having believed for just a moment that his friend might be serious. He really, really didn't need to be thinking that way at all.

"You are such a jerk, you know that?" the brownrider complained, only belatedly pulling away from his friend. "You don't have to be... to be like a girl just to give me a present, you wherry." Fluttering eyelashes indeed! The fact that he couldn't quite meet Kas' eyes should've bothered him, but he hadn't realized how guilty that he felt for Impressing both a dragon and a firelizard while Okassis had remained without either. "Yeah, you think it's funny? Well next time I find a 'lizard, you're going to be the one stuck with it."

Not that Okassis really would've complained about that. Wherry-brained fool. "Queep!" Kia exclaimed, raising her head up on her neck. "Err, well... this one? This one was given to me by a man who wanted to find a home that wasn't him for her. I guess he had plenty flitters of his own, and he didn't want another mouth to feed." That was understating things slightly, but did he really want to tell Kas that the werylingmaster had given him the egg that had hatched just moments later? No, he did not.

Okassis almost regretted the moment ending - not because he really wanted to keep dragging it out, even he had a limit before he started getting uncomfortable. But S'van's face, shards, his face! The way he went sunburn-red in an instant, stammering, trying to assert himself when he was so far out of his depth already. Okassis was laughing like there'd be no end to his mirth, even as he stumbled back from the well-deserved shove he'd gotten for his trouble.

"'Course I'm a jerk," he chuckled breathlessly as the brownrider rounded on him, "that's what the song said!" If he was bothered at all by being compared to a girl, he didn't show it. Grinning, still struggling with bubbles of laughter, he straightened himself out and went to take his seat once more.

"So, what brings you out at this hour, anyhow?" Okassis asked, picking out his whittling knife once more to continue his work. "Got to pay off a favor for that little green of yours or sommat?"
PostPosted: Wed May 27, 2009 2:41 pm

It was a very good thing that Okassis had not continued with that line of teasing, because they might well have discovered just what S'van's limit was. That would have been a bit unfortunate, really. Actually dropping presents that contained small flits was no good. Clutching the apron, S'van raised an eyebrow at Kas. "You're never going to let that song go, are you?" The song was a much more comfortable subject, really. He didn't want to be thinking about wearing only the 'dress'... and worse, having someone paint him like that!

"Actually, I'm awake because Galliath demanded food earlier, and now he wants a bath." Had wanted a bath, anyway. "He wanted one, at least. He seems to think your gift is very amusing." Naturally. Gall had a sense of humor that was nearly as bad as Okassis', for all that he was young enough that it wasn't fully developed.

I am very funny, Galliath admonished, peering around S'van to glance over at his rider's friend. "Yeah, yeah. I know. You're hilarious." As funny as Okassis when he was slipping a trundlebug down the back of S'van's collar. Jerk. He had been quite right in his song, though 'jerk' wasn't the only word that fit Kas so well. "One of these days I am going to find a way to dodge your schemes, you know." One of these days he would be so used to the teasing that it wouldn't phase him.

"And when that day comes, I'll just have to get a mite bit smarter, won't I?" Unconcerned as always, Okassis smiled lazily to his friend, along with S'van's growing company of reptilian companions. He didn't say, he was in doubt that S'van would ever grow past his gullibility - not because the seaholder was so timid and insecure that he was unable to get beyond it, but because it seemed so ingrained into their dynamics that Okassis was very certain he'd pretend to be flustered, long past the time when he was able to laugh along with the rest of them.

"Bathtime for the brown, is it?" Musing over this, Okassis decisively settled his hands on his knees and boosted himself up. "I'll tag along, eh? We can chat." The saying of which led to the obvious implication, that the blond had something he wanted to talk to his friend about. It was hard to measure how serious it was yet, though, with Okassis being relaxed and joking as he was. "Besides, Faranth knows that Nose's day just wouldn't be complete without some moment where she could pretend we were off being romantic together!"
PostPosted: Thu May 28, 2009 6:15 pm

The confusion faded away as Okassis abruptly veered away from the teasing into his usual behavior. "Always a step ahead of me, right Kas?" S'van rolled his eyes. He wasn't really that much of a dimglow, not really. Unfortunately, Okassis was probably right about their dynamics. They were so ingrained by this point that even if S'van did get past this point in their friendship he would simply feign the behavior that he had so long employed.

"Yeah, it's bathtime it seems. You can hold my gift while I bathe Gall, hey?" It seemed apparent that the Trader had something that he wanted to talk about as he rarely made the suggestion to just talk. If he wanted to talk, he would. Nothing could keep Kas' mouth shut if he had something on his mind. "Sure, we can chat." Frowning slightly, he reached down to caress Galliath's headknobs, aware that the little beast was becoming somewhat anxious.

"Pffft, Nan. What would she ever do if she ran out of romantic interludes to fantasize about?"

"Ah, not just you, my boy," Okassis grinned, adopting the voice of his father for a moment as he regarded his friend. With a sort of gruff fondness, he reached out to ruffle S'van's hair. "To keep up in my business, you've got to be a step in front of Threadfall, don't you know!"

Then he broke out laughing, tramping ahead a few steps. "C'mon! You don't want that lunk of yours stinking up the Weyr, do ya?" he called back cheerfully. "They'll find out he's sleeping in the Barracks with us if he doesn't scrub up good!"

He was only half-joking about that, too. Galliath seemed to be getting larger with every day; it was only going to be a matter of time before someone caught onto their awkward arrangements, at this rate, and Okassis wasn't sure where the pieces would fall once that happened. He imagined himself claiming innocence; a dragon? Okassis would squeak, his eyes wide, in MY room? No Z'nal sir, never, I would have noticed for certain! All the while, a large dragon tail would be wagging under the upheaved mattresses on the back wall....

Well, at least it kept life interesting.

"You should've seen Nan at Gather," Okassis began musing. "I think it's her very own paradise. All the gossip of the island, lining up for her. Did you know that S'kagi had a daughter? I found her myself, and put the two together!"
PostPosted: Mon Jun 08, 2009 7:18 pm

"I'm sorry I missed it. Really. The Weyrling Gather wasn't so interesting, you know." S'van had wanted to go, after all. He had been told that as a weyrling, he was not allowed to attend. Galliath simply could not be exposed to that kind of environment right now. Not when he was so young. "I really would have liked to have seen Nan at the Gather." Wait, what? What was that? "... S'kagi has a daughter? Really?"

Somehow, that struck S'van as really surprising. The bronzerider seemed rather young to have a child, didn't he? Or perhaps he simply didn't understand the situation, didn't know how old the man was. ... Well, he didn't. That was true enough. "You're right, we'd better get Gall cleaned off." Poor little man. Galliath didn't especially appreciate the comments about himself stinking up the Weyr and told S'van so.

I do not smell bad, the brown dragonet groused, showing the first signs of ill temper that his rider had seen since he had grumped at the brown flit. "He says he doesn't smell bad. I think he's a little offended." Not surprising. Dragons did seem to have quite the egos, didn't they? "Heh. A step in front of Threadfall indeed. I'll bet you're a step in front of Z'nal as well, right?"

Always a step ahead. That was Okassis for him! Tell him that he smells bad, too! "Apparently you're in need of a bath as well, Kas." Maybe that was just Galliath being fussy, but hey, it didn't hurt to have a bit of fun, did it? And they'd get a bath soon enough. Washing dragonets tended to mean that you'd get washed in the process, too.

"Shards. Z'nal, I like to keep three steps ahead of, and at least two to the right," Okassis answered with a mock shiver. "I don't see why we need Weyrs at all. We just need enough of him spread out over Pern, and when Thread falls close enough to catch a glimpse, it'll just turn right around and run back to the Red Star for safety!"

Flashing a grin at the dragon, he retorted, "Well, of course I do. It's all part of the plan, you see. If I smell worse than Galliath there, then nobody'll notice the dragon smell. That it'll keep away any nosers is just a bonus!" Then he had to pause, examining his wording, and amend, "Well, other than the obvious Nose, at least."

It was easy to joke. It was comfortable, even. Okassis wondered if he wanted to change the conversation at all; and, considering Galliath, thought that maybe he didn't. The dragon wouldn't want to hear about the drama at Gather, surely, and if Okassis was dying to confide in his best friend about it, then maybe he'd just have to wait....

Or maybe he'd just have to be selfish, anyway. Because he could tell when he needed something, and there was no one else at the Weyr who could understand the way S'van could. And he could bear a guilty conscience, maybe, for having to confide it in Galliath at the same time; it was just the way things were now.

"... So," he began obtrusively, "my caravan was at the Gather."
