User ImageChries took one last look around the fair in a fit of optimism. Maybe he'd see Zalir now?

His optimism was rewarded by the sight of a beautiful orange bouffant. Smiling, he wriggled his way through the crowd toward the Litch. Someone passed him a bag of candy; he nodded to them, murmured, "Thank you," and kept pushing through until he reached his roommate. "Hey," he said. "I was hoping I'd see you here. How's your luck been so far?"

User Image

User ImageZalir looked around the fair, trying to figure out where to go next. The sight of a plushie lying trampled on the ground caught zeir attention and pulled at zeir heartstrings. Oh no! This wouldn't do! Zey dodged through the crowd to pick up the injured plush and brush it off. It was a faded orange, actually quite an attractive color. Zey shoved it into zeir belt and looked around once again. Someone brushed past zem. "Happy Haunted Hallows!" they said before handing zem a big orange lollipop.

"Thank you!" Zalir said to the stranger. Then there was a warm presence at Zalir's side. Zey looked down to see zeir handsome roommate, Anchriesel, standing at zeir side. Zalir squeaked and blushed. "I-I! I, um, I, I just got here, so, um, my luck's been--okay? So far? I guess? I have two plushies!" He was glad to see zem here? Oh my goodness!

User ImageHisteol shook his head and chuckled at his hemi-Demonic friend's bombastic arrival. It seemed that Peri had pushed his sleeplessness aside for the evening to enjoy it with them. "Xei's got it in a nutshell," he said. "We've mostly been waiting for you. Now that you're here, though, I think our night will go from good to great." That reminded him of something. He dug around in his bucket until he pulled out the squished vespercat plush he'd received. "I remember you saying once that you were disappointed that you hadn't gotten the green skeleton cat from last Haunted Hallows. If this one is the one you're looking for, you can have it." He held out the plush to Perigor. As he did so, someone dropped a bag of candy at his feet. He picked it up and felt it, then chuckled. "If things are like last year, then I'm assuming that the round candies are eyeballs, right?" Sorry, it may have been years since he first started coming to Asphodel Garden's annual Haunted Hallows bash, but receiving candy eyeballs was still hilarious.

User Image

User Image This plushie was won here; Histeol is now giving it to Perigor.

User ImageUstule nodded. "I weesh them the best of luck in staying," she said. "Eet ees a terrible thing to hev to move away from your home." Ustule felt a flash of approval for Prometheus and Xei's parents at Xei's words. There were many things that "sticking to traditions" could mean, but being vague about Litch traditions while in Demon territory generally only meant one thing, and it was something that Ustule whole-heartedly approved of.

Perigor's arrival was typical of the half-Litch. Ustule noted the dark marks around his eyes and the slightly strained posture, as well as the way his tail drooped. Funny, she'd never realized this before, but Perigor was the only member of their group of friends to have a tail (not counting Parodia, whom they hadn't seen since they were freshlings). He was also the only part Litch in their group to not have Litch ears. It was only when you looked at his eyes and the way that part of his ear had Rotted away that you realized the dark magic inside.

Those were gloomy thoughts. She wanted cheerful ones, to light herself up like a jack-o-lantern. And here was one: they were back together again, five of them united for a common cause. That cause, of course, being each other. "We heve been expecting you, Perigor," she murmured. Anyone who knew her well would have recognized her small half-smile as a wicked grin, coming from her. At precisely that moment, the mysterious adult dropped a jar in front of her. She scooped down and picked it up. A jar of ooze. Charming. She put it in her pumpkin and looked around. "Where shall we start?" She directed the question at Xei. He was the newbie, after all.

User Image

User ImagePerigor felt a lot less User Image awkward waving his arms when Prometheus stuck a hand out for him. Gratefully, he took his friend's hand and shook it gently. Xeizii, on the other hand, did not offer a hand. That was okay, though, they didn't know each other as well. Shaking hands with Prometheus was basically like giving him a big bear hug, and you don't give a big bear hug to a stranger, especially one in a chair. Not that a handshake was bad for someone in a wheelchair. Or that people in wheelchairs necessarily had poor constitutions. User Image, he was tired!

"It's okay," Peri said. He wasn't being entirely truthful there. "I--we--missed you a lot. So it's nice to have you back. Um..." He looked over at Xeizii. Is that why Prometheus had stayed away? Had he found a new friend in his little brother? No, that was ridiculous. Wasn't it? Better than him staying away because he doesn't like you, he thought gloomily. "It's nice to meet you, Xeizii." Promme had mentioned him? That was a good sign, wasn't it? It implied that he hadn't been abandoning them, he'd just been--distracted? He'd ask Teo later. Teo knew everything about people. He was a people person. "Being pelted with candies seems like sort of a mixed blessing," he said. "Maybe we should step out of the way?"

At Histeol's remark, Peri grinned. It was exactly the kind of pine green plushie he had been coveting since he was a kid. "Oh my User Image, thank you so much, Teo! This is amazing!" He plucked the plushie from his blind friend's hands. "It's the color of the smell of pine needles inside the house," he said. "When the candles have been lit and the sun's going down outside."

No sooner had he finished his sentence when someone dropped a jar of goo and another stuffed animal in front of him. They mischievously tipped their hat at him and ducked away. "Well, he was weird," Peri muttered. He held up the new stuffed animal as well. "This one's the color of the taste of tart apples as you sit in the sunlight," he added for Teo's benefit.

User ImageThe next house looked spooky indeed--in that there were no decorations up. Vederat wasn't even sure if it was open for business, as it were, except that there was a porch light on. He tentatively led the way up the stairs and knocked on the door. Something grabbed his tail and he screamed. Standing in the pushes beside the porch was a Demon dressed as a skeleton. "Happy Haunted Hallows!" the apparition cackled. It dropped Vederat's tail and pushed a pile of treats towards the terrified freshlings before sinking back into the shadows.

They didn't wait to negotiate over the treats. They scooped them up and carried them to the sidewalk. Only when they were halfway to the next house did they hash out who got what. It was agreed that the two tricks would accompany the two plushies. "Let's never go back there again," Vederat said with a shudder, clutching the dark green vespercat and the green poo gummy to himself.

User ImageUser Image

User ImageAurabelle had also screamed when the skeleton had appeared, but by the time they made it down to the sidewalk, the Elf had managed to mostly calm down. "Relax," they said. "It was just an old man in a skeleton costume. Besides, Veddy, you dummy, you can't go back to the same house twice. It's not allowed." Aura had come out well from the encounter with a bright red candy apple.

User Image

User Image"I think he meant next year," Sound Lee murmured. He'd never admit it, but he was glad that it wasn't his tail that was grabbed. He was glad to get out of it with a stuffed green cat and a piece of candy, even if it was a disturbingly realistic turd candy.

User ImageUser Image

User ImageWell, that was two votes yay and one vote not yet cast. As someone in the crowd threw what appeared at first to be a turd in a bag (but on closer inspection turned out to be a bright green gummy candy) at his head, Deni turned to his sister. "What'dy'all think, Sara? Shall we?"

User Image

User ImageSara hesitated. Someone was throwing poo at them from the crowd, or at least poo-shaped candies. It was time to get into shelter. "Ah agree," she said. "Let's fahnd a haunted house an' explore it!"

User ImageWhile waiting for a reply from the others, Zuna held out their bucket to someone, saying, "Trick or treat!" Their reward, rather than candy, was one of those weird glowing rocks and a stuffed animal. Zuna sighed. They weren't really much of one for rocks or stuffed animals. Oh well. "Thanks!" they said, forcing cheer into their voice. "Happy Haunted Hallows!"

User ImageUser Image

User ImageThere comes a point when you can't be pushed anymore, and Yaviss met that point when a Naiad started telling him what to do. "I don't want to go to a haunted house," he said flatly. Actually, he thought a haunted house sounded pretty neat, but he was tired of being pushed around. "Too scary. I'll stay outside, thanks." He didn't care what the others thought of him, he didn't want something he considered to be fun to be called "stupid." "Besides, I've got a cat. I don't think animals are allowed in a haunted house." He held out his own bucket to the passerby, said the magic words, and got as a prize a green bracelet and a stuffed cat. See? Things were awesome outside!

User ImageUser Image

User ImageQuilo hesitated. He hadn't been to a haunted house since the time he went trick-or-treating with Tarin and Ella. There were too many painful memories there for him to want to go again. "I'll stay with you, Yaviss," he said. "Sorry, Zuna, but I'm kind of not in the mood for a haunted house right now." He held out his bucket and murmured, "Trick or treat!" to the passerby, who gave him a sugar skull.

User Image

User ImageWith the cat issue solved to everyone's satisfaction (except possibly Frankie, who had fewer pets than the rest of the family had--he knew his brother had been coveting one of those kittens), Fena felt relieved. Now they could continue with trick-or-treating without any more worry. That was before he discovered that Bath wanted to slow down so that the kittens could keep up with them. Fena sighed. "We really need a bag for those cats. Or something that we can carry them in." Inspiration struck. "You have a backpack, don't you, Batholith?"

"Yeah," Batholith sighed. "I do. I just...I don't want it to get dirty..."

In the end, it took all three of them pausing on the sidewalk to put the kittens in the bag. They struggled, but eventually calmed down when Bath moved the backpack from his back to his front, where he could keep an eye on them and rub their heads every so often. It was thus that their strange entourage continued the journey from house to house.

The next house also asked them to perform. They asked the homeowner to guard the kittens during their skit. She was so impressed with their planing (and their acting--he thought it was starting to improve!) that he gave both of the younger boys a stuffed animal as well as another gift. Fena got a bracelet and put it on while watching Bath recollect the kittens and refuse a treat. Adults were weird like that.

User ImageUser Image

User ImageFrankie was a little worse off than his brother. He, too, got a lovely stuffed animal, but he also got a jar of some sort of glowing ooze. It didn't look safe. It did, on the other hand, look very scientific...he put it in his breast pocket and they continued along.

User ImageOkay, now Evelyn was here. Darryl hid a sigh. He shouldn't resent his sister anywhere near as much as he did. After all, he was about to have another younger sibling when November rolled around, and she didn't live at their apartment. She lived on campus, where she spent most of her time with her friends. She only came home on the weekend. Mind you, the weekends were the worst, Da fluttered all over her when she was home...

Darryl threw his last dart at a balloon, securing himself a stuffed bat. The vendor handed him the bat and a carved turnip. Darryl made a face. "Thanks?" he said.

User ImageUser Image

User ImageTalya ran up to her friend--and roommate--and gave her an enormous hug. "Evey, you're here!" Now that almost all of Talya's favorite people in the world were here, they were almost ready to begin the festivities. They still had fifteen minutes before they had planned to begin. "Where's Lillian?" she asked. Someone brushed forcefully past her, throwing her off-balance. She turned to give them a piece of her mind when she heard something squeak in pain on the ground. She bent down to see what it was. It was a beautiful pink and purple flitterrat clinging on to a carved turnip. Talya tutted and picked the rat up. "There, there, dear, just ignore that nasty Nightmare dropping you on the ground."

User ImageUser Image

User ImageEvelyn returned the hug, waiting patiently while her friend picked up the rat. "I don't know," she confessed. "Lilli still has another assignment she has to finish. She said we can get started without her, so long as we keep our phones on so that she can call us to find out where we are." The person who pushed past Talya also gave her a lollipop. Interesting dichotomy right there. She put it in her bucket. "So I think there are people here I don't know?"

User Image

User ImageCharming. More people. The--the cyclops--wasn't so bad, it was the adult accompanying them that made Ruka nervous. It was a big Demon, silent and foreboding, now leaning against the adult called Mesektet. Nkiruka didn't like this at all.

Ampz yipped at her elbow. The sound was muffled. She looked down to see Ampz pulling on a carved turnip. She blinked. The other end of the turnip was being held by a cat that had wrapped its paws around the turnip and was refusing to let go. Ruka gently pulled the turnip out of their grips and held it up. The cat stared at her, as if accusing her of ruining its fun. Ruka looked up at her dad. Jurvik just sighed and smiled. "Okay," he said. "But get your brother to teach you how to litter-train them. He taught his bats how to."

User ImageUser Image

User ImageWell, if no one else was going to do the introductions, then it fell to Xenophon, right? "I'm Xeno," he said to the cyclops girl. "You're Evelyn, right?" Talya had told him about her other friends so that he knew who else would be trick-or-treating with them. "This is my dad, Jurvik, and my sister, Nkiruka." Something bumped his feet and he looked down. "What's with all the turnips?" he said out loud.

User ImageOriset giggled. "Yeah, sheesh, Kuni, lemme do my looking for myself." She looked at the trapdoor thoughtfully. It was just barely out of reach. On the other hand, it was right above the fake electric chair. Cautiously, she pushed it from all angles, then looked over at Kuni. "Kuni, you're the engineer--is this thing safe?"

She waited while Kuni looked it over from a variety of angles. This took a while; at one point he was even lying on the floor behind it. "It can take your veight," he said at last. He climbed to his feet and stood aside.

Ori climbed on top of the chair and pulled the trapdoor open. It creaked ominously. A ladder was attached to it, folded up so that it didn't hit the opener on the head. She grinned and pulled out the ladder. "Could you hold this for me?" she asked Wyrdda. The Grimm nodded. Ori handed her her lantern as well and turned to Kuni. "I'm going to need to borrow your necklace," she said. "I won't have hands free until we're all up there. You can pass me the lantern and my bucket when I'm inside, then I'll hand you back your necklace."

Kuni made a face, but did as she asked, handing over his glowing necklace. Ori put it around her neck and took a deep breath. "Wish me luck!" she said. She climbed up the ladder and looked around

She arrived in a cobwebbed room lit only by one of those obnoxious skull candles and a lantern like the one she had picked up earlier. The walls were covered in shelves, each one with dozens of dolls on it. Dolls were everywhere--small ones, large ones, soft ones, hard ones. There were even three life-sized porcelain dolls sitting on worn, velvety chairs in the corners. One of them had a tray on their lap with several objects on it. She shuddered. More dolls. She went back to the trapdoor to exchange the necklace for the lantern and to collect her bucket. "It's a room full of dolls," she said. "Here, each of you hand me your bucket or lantern before you climb up."

When all of them had gathered in the room, they looked over the objects on the porcelain doll's lap. "I'll take a lollipop," she said. "I haven't had many other candies tonight. What about everyone else?"

User Image

User ImageThat's more than reasonable, Wyrdda signed. Ori had been taking most of the tricks so far. Does anyone mind if I take one of the other lollipops? No one did, so she took a bright blue and pink one (though she could only figure out what color it was when she held it up to one of the lanterns).

User Image

User ImageJie didn't really want to take a trick, but she really liked that stuffed baby doll. It was the only doll in the room that wasn't creepy. If she was going to take a prize like that, she would also take a trick. "I guess I'll take two of the dolls, the cute one and the creepy one?" she said. Everyone else nodded in agreement. She reached out to take the prizes, then screamed as the enormous porcelain doll opened its eyes and tilted its head.

User ImageUser Image

User ImageNaihilus had come up the ladder before Kunibert this time--the Dryad had wanted to admire the engineering behind the prop chair before he went up. He tried to imagine his friend with one of the creepy dolls and smiled. Ha. No. Kuni would not like that. He resolved to take that one when something caught his eye hiding under a shelf. A small orange kitten was staring at him with enormous eyes. It looked like a giant puffball. Nai got down on his knees and held out his fingers for the kitten to sniff, but it backed away further under the shelf when Jie screamed.

User ImageUser Image

User ImageFinally satisfied with the sturdy wooden construction, Kuni followed his friends up the ladder, his necklace once again around his neck. Thankfully, his friends had left a lollipop for him, but before he could grab it, the doll holding it opened its eyes and tilted its head. Kuni swore loudly and jumped back, almost falling into the hole of the trapdoor. Whoops. That should really be closed. He pulled the ladder up, clicked it back into place, and closed the door. "Jie," he sighed. "Zey can't touch you here, remember?" In spite of his cool words, he was well and truly spooked. It had just started moving out of nowhere!! He was almost too afraid to collect his lollipop now!

User ImageCiel felt terrible. She didn't like frightening people, and it sounded like she had frightened the teenager really badly. "I'm sorry," she whispered, moving her lips as little as possible. So what if she was breaking character and the manager was going to get angry at her later? If he even found out that she had whispered? She didn't want this to be a negative experience for anyone. "Just doing my job," she added. Then she fell silent again. She wasn't supposed to talk--she hoped that the children would understand that.

User ImageRaniol whooped in triumph. Aw yeah! Haunted House! The one he had his eye on was apparently open for more guests now. He took his siblings' hands and swung them. "Which way do we go?" Nothing could stop him, not even the poo gummy that hit his chest at that very moment.

User Image

User ImageIt fell to Cal to pick their next activity, and it turned out to be a guessing game. Someone had set up a series of pumpkins, each one arranged in an open-sided box with holes cut out. Basically, one side of each pumpkin was sticking out of the box, while the other side was obscured by a panel on top. The vendor's side was open so that they could move the pumpkins. "Each of these pumpkins has an object in it," the vendor said. "You pick a pumpkin, and you get to keep whatever's inside it."

Cal nodded. "Two of them are stinkers?" she asked.

The vendor grinned. "Might be," they said. "Might be."

Cal looked over at Eidil, who nodded. "We'll try our luck," Cal told the vendor. She tapped the one on her far right, which the vendor turned to reveal a bag of candy corn. "Hey, neat!" she said with a grin. "Thanks!"

User Image

User ImageEidil liked this game. She'd never seen it before, but she liked it all the same. "May I pick two pumpkins?" she asked the vendor.

The vendor nodded. "Yup! I'll reset between guesses."

Eidil considered them carefully, then picked the one on the far right and the one on the far left. She left the center one--it seemed too obvious. The one on the far left, the one that Cal had not picked, had a stuffed animal in it. Score! Wait, had that been there all the time? "This game is more complicated than we think," she murmured to Cal. Her second pick, the one that Cal had picked, was now full of nasty candies. She took the candies with a shrug. Oh well. "May we try again?"

Nashira:

"Oh yes. Sam did say he liked to bake." She said softly. She pet the fuzzy fabric of her plushie before tucking it into her bucket. "Do you bake as well... uhm, Salem, was it?" This other Samhain seemed rather nice. "Do you like familiars too?" She wanted to reach out and pet the rat that seemed that liked Salem, when there was a low hiss and deep meow. Nashira looked down as a strange looking vespercat seemed to be stalking the flitterats. Just when it looked like it was about to jump at Salem's new friend, Nashira scooped it up.

"Stop that." She gently poked it's forehead with a finger. The cat let out a startled sounding "Mrow?" and blinked at Nashira, it's glowing eyes almost unnerving in the dark. "You need to play nice with our new friends."

It seemed she had a new familiar.

"Salem? Are you thirsty?" She asked, looking around at all the different booths. There was a drink vendor not too far away. All the drinks were in those cheap dime-store plastic goblets.

Kingston:

When Ren said that he'd been thinking the same thing, Kingston's face sort of lit up, and not because of the glowsticks he was wearing. "You thought so too? That's great! It'd be such a shame to keep friends apart. And hey, who knows? Maybe by the end of this evening, we'll all call each other friends."

"Whoa whoa whoa." Kingston laughed when Mai threw a raisin at him. "Thanks, but I have my own box!" apparently he did, too. Someone had dropped one in his bucket sometime.

When Vanna walked away, Kingston watched him. He wondered what was on his mind. "You have a ton of those plush things now don't you?" Kingston said softly, worried for his friend. "Do I need to make you a plushie too, to add to your hoard?" He didn't want to ask what was bothering him. He was about to put a hand on Vanna's shoulder when suddenly a ball of light appeared in front of him. "Whoa!" he half barked, half yelped. A wisp was bobbing in the air between him and Vanna. "I... it... wh..." He sputtered as the wisp circled around him then landed on his head. "...Think it likes my glow sticks?

Someone else gave Aurelia a plushie. Meadow didn't like it, but he wasn't sure if it was because people kept giving her plushies, or if he was jealous for other reasons that he couldn't put into words. "HEY! I'm her companion!" Meadow shouted at the man who gave her a plushie. He huffed and looked away, crossing his arms. HE was cute too... wasn't he? Meadow shuffled his foot, and kicked a plastic bracelet. "Huh?" Well this was cute too!

That seemed like some kind of warning to him!

Aurelia snuggled her new plushie before she put it into her bucket with the others, looking up suddenly when she heard Meadow yelling. She blinked in confusion as she heard his words; well of course he was her companion. More than that, he was her best friend. She looked at his face, seeing the pout and wondering if he was...jealous? Of what? She looked over when he found the bracelet to see what it was. "Ohh....that looks pret--OW!" Just as she was complimenting him she got hit in the back of the head by something that was thrown at her. Turning around she looked down to see this weird glowing rock but no sign of who threw it. "....The heck? That hurt..." She sighed as she rubbed the back of her head, kneeling down to pick up the glowing rock. The second she had it in her hand she felt this wave of sadness that was quickly overrun by fear. She started to shake as she held it, tossing it into her bucket with a harsh recoil; she didn't like touching it. Glancing off to the side she saw something big, black and pink with lots of legs and eyes....and the residual fear from the weird rock made her shriek and jump back in a slight panic. It took her a moment to calm down before she realized that it was....just a plushie; a pink-kneed spider plushie that was...actually kinda cute. She picked it up and looked into its eyes with a stern glance. "Why'd you have to go and scare me like that? That wasn't very nice, I don't care how cute you are." With that she tossed it into her bucket as though putting a misbehaving child in their place.

Iolanthe was enjoying bits and pieces of her candy floss cloud while looking around at the various games available. She saw one that was titled Candy Fishing and she trotted on over, the attendant explaining that all she had to do was cast the pole, wait for the tug and see what they got. It sounded pretty fun and random so she decided to go for it. She was given the toy fishing pole and she cast it over the background painted to look like a candy-filled lake in a spooky scene. It was a few seconds till she felt the tug and she reeled it in to find.....a box of raisins. Oh well.....it wasn't candy but at least it wasn't something weirder. "Oh, sorry sweetie. Some say the raisin is nature's candy, though. Here's a dummy prize for playing!" The attendant handed her a cute little nezubat plushie and Io smiled, thinking the smile on it was cute.

Kohaku wandered around towards some of the game booths, seeing so many interesting things that were colorful and busy. They stopped to look at a game that seemed interesting when they heard Seeker start growling before she yipped excitedly at something. They glanced in the direction she barked and saw someone covered in things that glowed walking around and handing things to people. They were just about to walk past the baphomet till they paused and looked down at the freshling with their familiars. They smiled at the baphomet and handed them a necklace with a bottle of glowing stuff inside of it. "Here. Not only is it a neat souveneer of the festival but it's also a practical safety tool." They nodded firmly before walking on. Kohaku looked at the necklace and looped it on their neck, smiling down at it. "That person was right; it's quite practical when you think about it."

It was getting close to time for the kids to be heading back. Once they were all back together, she figured one more family game and then calling it a night.

As she thought, the cat mrowled hopefully and began to rear up, batting at something just above its head. Glancing up, the tall chimera saw a green wisp bouncing through the air, obviously playing with the cat.

"Oh great," she laughed. "Now I'm the wisp whisperer."

She never did see the sicko who dropped a tooth, of all things, into her pail.

Smiling a little as she found an out of the way game and proceeded to win some sweet loot, she considered her friend's question.

"Well, from what you told me about growing up, I'm guessing that you didn't get a lot of chances to experience stuff like this. And since you can't see, I want to make sure that you don't get too overwhelmed by the noise and scents floating around. So I thought we could take our time exploring and letting you get used to things before we dive deeper into the fair."

Reaching out with a free hand, she gave the revenant a skritch before holding an orange cat plush out and placing it gently in Eliza's arms.

"That is for you. I'll carry it for you, if you need me to, but I wanted you to be able to touch it first. And I just won a bag of candy corn, so we can share that too, if you'd like..."

Zahneel's voice trailed off as a faint scent on the wind made it's way to her nose. Eyes going wide, she shuddered a little in apprehension. Oh no. No, it couldn't be him. She probably was just catching some other kumiho's scent and being paranoid.

nepsah
Meimu can come across Zahneel, if you want. Give her an excuse to swat him if he even thinks harm at Eliza. ;D

Once they were seated, he noticed her blushes and thought hard to find a way to make this less awkward for the both of them. Well, at least for her.

Fortunately, the aforementioned cotton candy was nice and handy. Holding the cone out, he indicated that she could have the first go at it.

And in all of the teen-aged awkward duckling moments, he never saw the glowing necklace slipped so stealthily into his pail.

"I knew you could do it! Now we match even more!"

She was about to heap more praise on her mother when a rock was tossed at her pail, knocking it over. Fortunately nothing inside fell out too far. Still, she couldn't help the tears that popped into her eyes as she quietly gathered everything up. As she picked the pail back up, a faint squeaking made her look down. At her feet, with one tiny paw resting on the toe of her shoe was the cutest little flitterat. Eyes going wide, she somehow gathered the little cutie up and showed it to her brother.

"I think it wants to be friends," she whispered in an awed voice, tears forgotten.

She would instill some self confidence into him one kind word at a time, if need be. And that he liked the plush so well gave her a pleasant little thrill.

"Pumpkin carving sounds delightful," she murmured with a smile. She saw a cotton candy vendor wandering past and quickly stopped her and purchased a cone before turning to show it to Jessie. "But I insist you share this with me. After all, it's not a full experience if one doesn't enjoy one or two fair food treats."
