Hyperborea made her way along with her group to their chosen battle field. As they reached the norther bridge a repulsive odor made the young woman cover her nose in disgust. She looked up to see ahead of them a creature made of trash like a filthy golem. The monster roared and attacked showering the group in rotten debris. Hyperborea raised her arms to try to guard her head as she was battered by the debris.

Once she recovered from the blast and trying to hold down her nausea from the smell the transcended knight raised her staff high above her head it glowed bright silver. "Everyone close your eyes for a second!" She yelled to the others surrounding her as she channeled her magic. She unleashed her spell upon the monster flooding the area with bright burning starlight.

Knight Spell
She holds up her staff as the head glows silver. It creates a bright explosion of silver starlight with Hyperborea at the center. It blinds and disorientates everyone else caught in the blast with their eyes open. It causes a great burning pain in her enemies and can at player discretion leave a sunburn like wound on people.

Lanting, Page of Ida
HP: 24/50
Action: Attacking the garbage, getting hit back, starting to hallucinate!
Damage Done: 5

Dunnottar was here. Lanting was already not best pleased at the prospect of having to fight a gross garbage monster, but to have Dunnottar glaring at him, too--he pressed a little closer to Corvina, as if the presence of the massive Senshi could protect him from Dunnottar's cold, hard judgement.

...Maybe he'd grab Dunnottar after this was over, make him listen to Corvina's account of whatever happened between the last Dunnottar and Lanting. Maybe that would make him stop being so ridiculous about a fragment of a fragment of memory. Or maybe he'd just double down. Or maybe Corvina would punch him. All of these things seemed about equally likely.

Anyweay, Dunnottar wasn't the point. They had a monster to fight.

"Oh, that's so gross," Lanting whined, as if that was going to make this Happen To Him Less.

And Corvina was rushing in--

"Corvina, wait!" Lanting gasped, and he darted forward after him, wincing when he got hit by the monster's counterattack.

"Hey! Leave him alone!"

(As if Lanting could take all the monster's attention for himself, but Corvina looked so upset, and he was looking for something that wasn't there, and all Lanting wanted was to be useful and help, even if that seemed a high bar for him--)

He wedged the slimmer end of his wand into the monster's gross side, like he could do any real damage with a cute little wand. Like he could do anything at all.

He was already starting to step back, to evaluate, when the counterattack hit him--and Lanting was mid-step, and stumbled, and ended up falling on his a**.

"Xuxu," a disappointed voice said from behind him, and Lanting flinched. He knew that voice.

"Da-ge," he said, and he closed his eyes, tensing. His oldest brother couldn't be here, and even if he was, he wouldn't recognize Shuangxu in Lanting, so it was probably a hallucination. But it felt so real, felt like he was putting his hands on Lanting's shoulders, and speaking in that Tone he got when Shuangxu talked about his work as a vtuber or....anything else and da-ge was reminded that his youngest brother was a total disappointment, a NEET who made money playing video games all day.

"What are you doing here, Xuxu? Why are you trying to fight?" Da-ge sighed, and Lanting swore he felt hands squeeze his shoulders. "You don't need to do this. You're not going to do anything useful anyway. Come, rest. Lay down. Before you get yourself seriously hurt."

He was fake. A hallucination. He had to be.

But maybe...maybe that....sounded okay....it wasn't like he was going to do anything of substance anyway. Maybe it wouldn't matter to anyone if he just...laid down....and gave up.

BOSS HP: 207/350

The more the monster was hit, the more it almost seemed to…come apart at the seams.

As if there was something under the garbage, holding it together—and the more that it flung at them, and the more it was hit, the more of the thing beneath was revealed. Brief glimpses of what was beneath—

Something strange and oily and gelatinous.

Like the thing in the middle of the lake.

Kaifeng’s forgotten spell knocked off some of the outer shell. By making it retaliate, Corvina, Lanting, Sigiriya, Dunnottar, helped weaken it, creating vulnerable spots that could be targeted.

A strange sound came from the creature, like a low, keening wail, when Alastor’s magic struck it..as if it could, indeed, feel despair.

Or perhaps that was a trick of the Chaos.

Selinur’s ice covered the creature, and when Yvoire’s molten gold struck it, it shattered, driving sharp edges of freezing glaze into the monster’s form. Reims’s sword strike and Hyperborea’s light made the thing howl, this time as if in pain, and it echoed, strange and eerie.

This time, its assault was targeted—and the detritus it threw at Kaifeng, Selinur, Yvoire, Reims, and Hyperborea was solid, with enough force to knock them back or even off their feet

Kaifeng, Selinur, Yvoire, Reims, and Hyperborea take 11 damage and may be knocked off their feet.

For this round, the boss seems weakened and cannot retaliate!

Name: Kaifeng, Squire of Saturn
HP: 59 - 11 = 48 / 75 HP.
Action: Getting knocked back, then getting up again, then WHACK @ the boss. Also, trying to reassure Lanting.
Damage Done: 1d10 = 10 damage.
Boss HP: 207 - 10 = 197/305.

Monoceros didn’t seem the most confident about this whole business, but first of all, that didn’t matter. Not when Monoceros was also trying to remain optimistic regardless of the circumstances at hand. A positive attitude could make whole galaxies’ worth of difference, and hoping to encourage Ceros, Kaifeng flashed him another grin.

Secondly, if Monoceros did feel ill at ease or apprehensive, that made perfect sense. Fighting Chaos on an alien world could be incredibly disorientating, especially when it looked so very different to the ways that Chaos tended to manifest on Earth. (But what if it’s NOT so different, though, part of Kaifeng wondered, wandering far afield from the actual task at hand. What if there are actually pollution monsters like this in the Negaverse and they’re just waiting to unleash—)

Kaifeng shook his head to banish that currently unhelpful thought, right in time for the garbage-monster to let loose a keening wail. Although Kaifeng didn’t entirely let down his guard, he did tilt his head at that. Looking around, he couldn’t tell exactly whose magic had made the creature let out such a noise of despair.

“That noise would sound almost musical if not for the circumstances,” he said with a huff, trying to steady himself as he continued dodging debris and debated how best to next attack. He’d need to do that, since the thing still wasn’t gone. They needed to make it to the island at the center and fight the heart of this disgusting mess. “Remind me not to piss off whoever’s magic did that?”

Not that Kaifeng could really tell who the magic belonged to, as yet. None of the Knight magic he knew of offhand could do anything like that—plus, two of the Knights on the bridge were only Pages; Lanting and the Lysithea Page with the bright green ponytail (Dunnottar) didn’t have their magic yet. More likely a senshi, then, but that left almost too many candidates. Only two senshi hadn’t attacked—or at least hadn’t used their magic to do so, as was the case for the big, pink guy who’d come with Lanting (Corvina). But anyone else could have caused the monster to make that sound. Who was to say if the wail had come from someone’s magic or just from being in pain?

Apparently, the Chaos-monster itself could say.

The creature wailed again. With a gasp, Kaifeng whipped his head back around toward the creature.

“No really,” he told Monoceros. “This thing’s noise would work great as backing for some symphonic metal or something. It’s really a shame it’s a Chaos beast and not an actual vocalist because—”

And that was when the flying garbage hit him.

As he crashed down, knocked back on his a** by incredibly solid refuse that he couldn’t (and mostly didn’t want to) identify, Kaifeng snapped his lips shut. Batting some of the sludge off his face and hair, he felt grateful that none of it had gotten into his mouth. Yes, Daedalus had promised that nothing on his planet was contagious. Kaifeng had heard him and believed him. But Daedalus might not have known everything and if Kaifeng came home with some kind of Chaos-related illness, he didn’t want to imagine how devastated Huan-ge would’ve been.

“…Not my best moment,” Kaifeng conceded. “Mega-Garbodor over there totally got me with that one.”

And really, it was remarkably comfortable down here. Kind of nice, actually, relative to the fact that it was an ancient bridge and not, for example, a nice warm bed. Would it have been so bad to just……stop? Some part of Kaifeng didn’t feel like it would have been. He could still feel that force whispering at him that he was allowed to let himself rest.

But at the same time……? Yeah. No.

Taking a deep breath, Kaifeng shook himself around again. Everyone who’d come out here tonight had a job to do. On top of that, Kaifeng had first a brother to meet in the center and a man to get back home to. Letting himself just STOP wasn’t a real option. Plain and simple, Kaifeng couldn’t afford to stay down here all night. He couldn’t afford to not make it home to Helene, to leave him with yet another lifetime where a Kaifeng of Saturn had died without him there to help. Differences existed between their respective circumstances—Xingyi having been at Kaifeng when he died, as far as Liánlí-Kaifeng knew, and dealing with some kind of trouble from his b*****d “uncle” vs. Liánlí-Kaifeng being on Daedalus, fighting a Chaos infection. But those differences wouldn’t matter as much to Huan-ge as the fact that his Kaifeng had perished and he hadn’t been there to protect him.

Thoughts of Huanxi got him back to his feet right quick—he’d probably have bruises from getting hit with flying trash later, but Kaifeng could deal with that. Take it easier than usual for a few days to recover (and give Huanxi some peace of mind), then it would all be fine.

But how best to attack the trash creature in kind? Should the spirits have come out now, or should Kaifeng have saved them for the big nasty in the center island?

He didn’t choose an answer so much as he noticed Lanting. Maybe Kaifeng was wrong, but from here, it looked like, mentally, Lanting was miles away from the battle. Like he might’ve been seeing something that wasn’t there.

“I have to get closer to attack the thing,” Kaifeng told Monoceros, “but I’ll run right back, okay?”

He meant it, too.

And while he readied his weapon, as he rushed toward the Chaos-monster, Kaifeng called out, loud enough for anyone to hear, “Lanting, be careful! You’re not alone! You’ve got this!”

Kaifeng wasn’t alone, either. None of them were. As he swung his bamboo club at one of the vulnerable spots left exposed by the cracking of the Chaos-beast’s shell, Kaifeng thought of Stribor and how he had to meet his brother-from-another-planet in the center. He thought of Lanting, who probably hadn’t expected something quite like this on his first trip to a senshi’s home-world. And he thought of Helene—of Huanxi—and how Kaifeng could not abandon him by dying away from him.

Eternal Sailor Alastor
HP: 84/100
Action: Lucien is on his shoulder, helping Selinur as he was pushed back; attacking the monster
Damage: [Direct Super Magic; 10 + 8] = 18
Boss HP: 179/350

Before Alastor had a chance to answer either Lucien or Selinur, the monster had struck again. There was a very brief window where the outer shell had shifted and Alastor saw something underneath. He hadn’t been able to make out much of the form–and it certainly didn’t look solid enough to make a difference–but it seemed to react to his magic.

It had made a strange noise but he couldn’t tell if it was his magic or if it felt pain.

This time, he and Lucien managed to avoid the trash it flung but Selinur was not so lucky. Before the other Senshi could be pushed backwards, he wrapped his arm around Selinur’s to help steady him.

“Maybe,” he answered. “But I don’t think I want to stand still and find out.”

The air was more foul in his mouth than his nose.

“I wouldn’t want a rainstorm here,” Alastor grumbled to Lucien under his breath. They were too close to the water, and judging by the sting in the air he couldn’t assume rainfall would be kind to them. It felt like they’d just be asking for acid rain.

No, he’d take the land as it was now and not have to worry about getting stuck in the mud or swept into the lake.

They were just definitely going to stop by Alastor and get washed up before heading back to Earth.

“Are you all right, Selinur?” he asked and released him when he knew he was more stable on his feet. He righted himself quickly to make sure Lucien had a good perch, but as he did so he kept his distance from the monster.

For as much as he loved to get his hands dirty, not like this. He loved a good brawl but he liked to be able to see who he was knocking around.

Magic still felt like the best option.

Quote:
Super Sailor Scout Attack: Rot

(Enhancement) Super Sailor Scout Attack: Rot

As Alastor casts his magic, all enemies within a twelve foot radius will suddenly feel flushed with heat, as though they are at the peak of sickness. They may feel winded, feverish, fatigued, or disoriented, and an itchy, sometimes painful black rash will spread across them, starting at their appendages and working towards their heart. The sickness seems to turn blood black, creating frightening sights as the skin discolors. This sudden surge of sickness may cause panic or alarm, as their bodies may feel as though they are rapidly shutting down. Despair consumes them, as if there is no hope for recovery or any means to ease their symptoms. The magic lasts for thirty five seconds and has two uses. The magic will only affect those in the area when it was cast. Players may choose the severity of their symptoms or if there are any lasting effects.

Monoceros smiled tremulously at Kaifeng—the man seemed to be an endless font of optimism. And now he was going off to get close—Monoceros prayed that the Saturn Knight would be okay. The fear settled deeply into his own bones. He couldn't—

He swallowed it back. No. He would never just lay down and give up. He'd been that low a few times in his life, and he wasn't about to let some stupid, gross, garbage monster try to dictate his life.

"Quill Flash!" he shouted again, sending the porcupine quills whizzing out, watching and wincing as they zinged past Kaifeng—thankfully, not hitting him, and only embedding themselves into the monster.

Quote:
A burst of porcupine quills flies from Sailor Monoceros's hand, which can cause shallow scratches and/or minor puncture wounds. Any attempt to remove the quills before they vanish will cause sharp, pinpointed pain in the area; however, they don't sink in much deeper than skin-level. A user can choose to have this attack cause permanent damage or the injury will fade when the magic expires. This attack will last 20 seconds and can be used three times per battle.

Damage/Healing/Buff Done: 4
Boss HP: 163/350

Dunnottar's breathing became labored. Avery. Avery. His heart squeezed, mouth drying out, and then the monster screamed. Dunnottar's head jerked and the vision of Avery, while it didn't vanish, suddenly didn't seem so compelling. He panted a little, clenched his fists, and exhaled harshly. He needed to help kill this monster. Then Avery could go back to his rest. His well deserved rest.

He leaned down, selected another, fairly large rock, and hurled it with all his might at the damned stupid monster.

Action: On Alastor’s shoulder. Observing since ew gross trash but also he’s a cat.
Damage: N/A sorry, he’s a cat
Boss HP: 163/350

Although they had been warned to conserve their strength, for a larger threat was likely to appear, it seemed as though some did not take that warning to heart.

Lucien watched the Senshi (Selinur) that approached Alastor with caution, unenthused about the idea of the creature throwing more trash at them.

Thankfully, it seemed as though the combined efforts of those around the monster were paying off. He knew Alastor noticed it too, because his attention was focused on the same part of the monster as his own.

Something was under the surface. Something that made the fur on the back of Lucien’s neck rise on end and his tail swish in agitation.

He dug his claws into Alastor’s collar when he reached out to try to catch the Senshi that had approached him before -- Selinur, as Alastor had called him.

“I am Lucien,” he introduced himself to Selinur once he was on his feet again. He did feel a deep desire to assist all Senshi, if they so wanted. He could only do so much if they didn’t know his name.

“I apologize for not being of much use,” he said quietly to Alastor. He could get down and physically attack the creature, but… there was so much sludge and trash that he really didn’t want to unless absolutely necessary.

Action: Jabbing at the monster with the pointier end of his parasol.
Damage Done: (1d10) 6
Boss HP: 157/350

Yvoire was knocked off of his feet for his troubles. He dropped his parasol on accident, catching himself by the arms on the way down, scraping his palms with a wince. Yvoire shook it off quickly and scrambled for his weapon. He got back onto his feet, doing his best to ignore the smell.

God, but it really was awful.

The monster’s retaliation had knocked him away from Reims, but it was easy enough to find him again in a smaller group, with only a single target to focus on. Yvoire jabbed at the monster with his parasol on his way to ensure that Reims hadn’t gotten hurt, sticking the pointier end in as hard as he could.

“This is disgusting,” he continued to complain.

Yvoire was quiet about it, mumbling to himself more than to anyone in the vicinity. Cynthus would have cursed and raged, he knew. Yvoire was tempted to follow her example in her absence, but he settled for scrunching his nose and only staying within range as long as he had to.

“Are you okay?” he asked Reims.

Reims knew he’d been in the line of fire when he’d rushed in to attack. That was what he’d expected, given that his weapon and magic manifested into physical attacks, more than magical. He thought he’d taken the brunt of the damage, maybe even had a chance to block it from hitting the others, but he was wrong.

Instead, he’d been knocked back by the creature, and nearly fell into the muck of water before he could catch himself. He was pretty sure they would all need to wash themselves thoroughly before going home, because this stuff was likely going to fester if left untreated.

“I’m okay,” he promised Evie when he came over to check on him. His ankle felt tender, having landed on it wrong in his attempt at keeping himself upright, but not so much that he was going to be down for the count.

Back on his feet, he gathered up some stones to throw. He was more interested in checking on his friend for the moment. He would let the capable adults handle the monster for a bit, since they all seemed so intent on reminding him and his friends that they were children.

Hardly. How old were these others when they’d started fighting in this war?

“What about you? Oh, your hands,” Reims made a face and quickly reached out to take hold of Yvoire’s free hand to check on it. He saw the dirt and was worried he’d scrapped it up -- which he had.

“Okay, we’ll just make sure they’re washed really well,” he tried to reassure him, turning his hand over in his own just to be sure there weren’t other scrapes.

Name: DSS Corvina of Windflowers
HP: 24 / 50 HP.
Action: The Horrors continue. So does Punch The Garbage (Corvina’s doing very badly at it, though).
Damage Done: 1d8 = 1 damage.
Boss HP: 149 / 350.

How long had it even been since he’d last seen Alys? The real Alys, he meant, not some trick conjured up by Chaos for no reason beyond making him suffer. Distantly, Corvina recognized that the fighting around him hadn’t stopped. Others who’d come up here to Daedalus still stood against the enormous pile of garbage.

Corvina himself also stood against the enormous pile of garbage……but as he looked down at Alys—even recognizing the she wasn’t the real Alys, that she couldn’t be the real Alys because his best friend was dead—he couldn’t entirely bring himself to care? And honestly, why should he have? Corvina hadn’t wanted to come on this adventure in the first place. This wasn’t his planet. It wasn’t his Chaos. All he’d learned was that Lanting had an easier time trusting people than he should’ve had.

(But, really, Corvina should have known that without needing to learn that Lanting trusted the new Kaifeng and the new Murikabushi. By all standards of common sense, Lanting should never have taken Corvina home with him. What sort of person heard somebody say that they’d murdered your previous incarnation, and then took them home? Like some kind of pet?)

“What do you even think you’re doing with him, Trystane?” Alys squinted at him as though she could detect any lie he might try to spin. Not that he wanted to lie to Alys—he didn’t, he hated doing that to her—but he didn’t know what to tell her, either. “You remember how badly things went with the last Lanting. You remember the way he didn’t understand you. What makes you think this time will really be any different? But the people who’ve always been there for you—always supported you—we’ve been waiting for centuries and you won’t just let go.… Come join us.…… Stop it all and just rest.”

The more the Alys-shaped hallucination spoke, the better that idea sounded.

The very idea of what she proposed—giving up, laying down and showing his belly for the Chaos, letting everything just. stop.—was, on a deep and fundamental level, wrong. That Corvina even remotely considered it meant something was wrong with him. All too likely, the deficiency went back to his shameless mother and her pathetic, offworld heritage. Hearing Alys say such things about resting and surrender meant this had to all be inside Corvina’s mind, some garbage hallucination brought on by the Chaos.

Because Alys would never say something like that. Not the Alys who’d died trying to claw her way loose while the Chaos on their world choked the life from her. Corvinates—his people, the people he’d been meant to protect—never gave up. They didn’t walk away from a fight until they’d won. Even though her parents had never loved her as well as her sisters, even though she too had known the pain of loving from afar a Knight who didn’t realize, and even though so many had underestimated her due to her stature and her compact frame, Alys had understood that truth about their people better than anyone else Corvina had ever known. Truly, she had been the fiercest warrior he’d ever known.

And how dare the Chaos on this world have the temerity to use her face and her voice to trick him like this.

Screaming wordlessly, Corvina rushed in at the garbage monster, once more trying to slam his fists into its body. He didn’t notice until his blow had landed that he’d mostly hit some of the remaining outer shell.

He didn’t notice until that moment how tight his chest felt, or how his eyes had grown hot and his vision blurry.

Hyperborea was struck with with a large chunk of debris knocking her off her feet and sending her flying back from the force of it. She hit the ground with a thud as she sucked in air. She coughed and sputtered from the impact as she rolled onto her knees. She ignored the pain and instead focused on continuing her attack.

She immediately began casting her magic drawing in starlight to the tip of her staff she condescended it into a baseball sized ball of pure. She launched the radiant blast at the monster like a miniature falling star. As it exploded in the monster Hyperborea made it back to her feet and raised her staff to continue fighting the monster.

Voyager still felt quite disgusted from the liquid that had been cut into both his uniform and himself. A long, LONG shower would be needed after all of this, and even then he wasn't sure he would still be clean. This thing reminded him of that one spirit from Spirited Away and if there was anything he learned from that, it was he did not want to touch it. At all. Which is why he had grabbed a rock to hit it instead though it only seemed to lodge itself within the creature rather than doing any actual damage. But maybe if it took the rock instead of the garbage, something would happen to it?

He wasn't sure what that something was but hopefully it wasn't exploding all over them in a horribly-smelling, garbage-full, sticky mess that Voyager probably would have lost his dinner from.

He did not want to see that again. He tried to take a few steps back from it, seeing as how the others were using their magic on it. He wasn't sure if he should use his magic just yet. He was still new to using it and so he didn't know quite what it would do to the creature if he were to use it.
