Since he’d gotten grounded, and since he’d been pushed down onto the cold ground with melting snow, Reaghan had ended up sick again. He hadn’t changed out of his wet clothes fast enough before it got to him and while he was mad about being grounded he hadn’t even bothered to take care of his health. Of course his mother felt bad but he was still confined to his room. He was brought hot soup and medicine when it was time but otherwise he was told he needed to rest.
With nothing else to do Reaghan had taken up staring out the window. The days had changed and of course it was snowing now. Nothing too hard or that would cause people to be stuck inside, just a light dusting, but it was still pretty to look at. As he watched each snowflake fall down he noticed a few kids running past. A frown formed on his face as he thought about the injustice of him having to be locked up all the time. If only he hadn’t fallen through the ice back then. Though he was glad it had been him and not his brother.
A sigh left him and he put his elbows on the window sill so that he could use his hands to prop his chin on. “This sucks.”
Reaghan looked over to his desk where he’d kept a bit of wood and his small knife. It was the only thing he could really do when he was sick. It didn’t require too much energy and his mother didn’t freak out like she did when he tried to do something more physical. He moved away from the window and over to the wood so that he could pick it up. There was still bark on it so he grabbed his knife and started to clear it off.
As he worked he thought long and hard about his choices. In truth Reaghan was limited on what he could do. Unlike his mother he couldn’t sit out in the cold and wait for prey to come by so he could take it out with a bow and arrow. So being a ranger was definitely out of the question. While his dad did take care of the store he had no interest in it. Nor did he think he could handle a spear the way his dad did.
He knew his aunt was tough too. But she lived up north where it was super cold all the time and he really couldn’t do that. Visiting was one thing but living up there.. He’d likely die. If not because of his health then it would be from boredom. He wasn’t sure how his cousins liked it.
“Makes no sense why someone would want to be up there.” He mumbled.
He moved his hands in sync with one another and got the bark all off the wood within a matter of minutes. Reaghan lifted it up for inspection, turning it this way and that before he was satisfied with it. A nod to himself and he lowered it back down to a comfortable level so he could continue to work it with the knife. He figured he might as well carve something nice while he had all the time in the world. There was no telling how long his mother would keep him grounded for. Or how long he’d be sick for.
He wondered if he’d be ungrounded before he was better or if it would be the other way around. “Guess we’ll find out.” He shrugged.
The more he used the knife the more the piece of wood went from something simple to something more detailed. As he continued he thought of how there were people who made the very fancy furniture he often saw for sale at his dad’s store. He’d often wondered why they never had anything like it at home. Was it that they couldn’t afford it? Just how much did that stuff sell for anyways?
“I wonder if its super expensive..” If it was then could he sell little things to make some coin of his own? Maybe if he did then he could save up to buy his mom one of those fancy chests with the carvings along the side. He was sure she’d love it. “How many things would I need to sell?” Likely a lot. And the thought of that was a bit daunting.
“I guess I could try making it..” His mom would bring him wood during her hunts. So he could just ask for bigger pieces. Or maybe he could ask his dad to buy him the good quality stuff from other regions. That would be something. “Maybe if I’m good enough then dad can sell my stuff in his store.” And wouldn’t that be cool. To have his things on display for a high price, people trying to get their hands on it, saving every bit they can just so they can own it. The thought was a nice one.
With a smile he looked at the wood in his hand and then came to a conclusion. He might not be able to be physical like the rest of his family but he could do this. “I can be a carpenter that just makes fancy furniture for the rich.” He laughed a little. Of course he’d have to make something to send up to his aunt as well. He didn’t want her to miss out simply because she lived up north.
