She had allowed for Eirex to go out with Ergon, keeping their sickly son Reaghan home from the cold. Today was turning out to be a particularly chilly one and the wind did not help it any. Ever since that day on the ice she had always made sure both boys were safe and warm. Though Reaghan required a bit more attention since he'd gotten the most damage from it all.
She stood stirring a small pot of broth that she had made up just for her son. "Reaghan, sweetheart, come set the table for yourself. I've made some broth to keep the chill from your bones." She called out to her boy as she eyed the liquid in the pot. Pulling the spoon out she blew on it then gave a small taste test to make sure it was good. "Mm, a bit more spice." She said to herself. Anything too bland wouldn't go over well.

He heard his mother call out for him and sighed. He was busy staring out the window in the wake of his brother and father leaving without him. Of course it had been this way ever since he was little, back on that fateful day. He hated it though. Being the sickly one was no fun. He understood why his family was protective. On more than one occasion he’d gone out in the cold only to be down for the next week or so with a cold that hurt his bones.
Reaghan leaned forward and pressed his forehead against the window, a bit of longing seeping into his expression. He really wished he was normal.

“Reaghan!” She called out again when she didn’t hear him moving. Since she’d been flitting about in the front area she knew he hadn’t snuck out the front door but there were still windows. She turned her head to look around for him when she caught sight of him in the far corner staring out the window. She let out a breath and felt her shoulder droop a little. “Sweetheart.. Come.” She felt bad that he was cooped up all the time but it was better than risking his health.

He groaned a bit but moved away from the window when he heard him mother tell him once more to come on. “Okay.” He didn’t really like the broth but he knew why his mother gave it to him. It did make him feel warmer from the inside out but it didn’t taste the best. Why couldn’t he have something a bit more tasty?
Maybe he could ask his dad to bring him home something yummy from the store next time. If he used his pathetic eyes then he might get his way.

Since he was moving she went back to the broth. More spices were added in for flavor before she stirred it a final time and reached for a bowl. She laddled some of the broth out and filled the bowl half way before she turned to set it on the table for her son to eat. “Grab your spoon. What would you like to drink? We’ve cool water or juice.” She did try to make sure they had something fun for the boys to enjoy in the house.

While his mother messed with the broth he set the table, putting a cloth down where he’d be sitting and grabbing the utensil for him to use. Even as she told him to grab it. He plopped his bottom down in the chair as she started to ask him what he would like to drink. Usually he drank water but today, since he already had to deal with the broth, he looked up at his mother and shook his head. “Do we have warm milk?” Maybe if he was lucky he could lay down for a nap afterward and make the time go by faster. Maybe when he woke up Eirex would be home.

She smiled at him and nodded her head as she reached out and ran her fingers through his hair. “We sure do.” Riya leaned over and pressed a kiss to the top of her son’s head before she went over to grab the container of milk. She’d set to work on warming up a cup for him to drink. She even had a bit of sugar to add to it to make it a bit sweeter for drinking.

With his mother off to make him the drink he glared down at the broth in the bowl. He might as well drink it and get it over with. Not that he was thrilled with the idea. A sigh left him as he raised his spoon off the table to dip into the liquid. “Can I have something other than broth next time?” His eyes glanced over to his mother to see if maybe she would even consider the option.

She was busy getting the milk ready for him when she heard his question about having something else next time. The woman blinked a few times before turning her head to look at her son. “What do you mean? Like what?” Riya supposed she could possibly give him porridge. Or maybe something else that was warm and would keep him from getting too cold.

His shoulder came up in a small shrug before going back down. His eyes looked at the broth as his spoon moved in a circle, stirring the contents of the bowl. “I don’t know. Maybe something that isn’t so.. Bland?” Reaghan knew that his mother would add spices to it but she never did too much for fear his stomach wouldn’t handle it and he’d get sick. Everything was about making sure he didn’t get sick.

A frown creased her brow as she watched her son. “I can get another flavor of broth if you don’t like that one. Your father can easily order something.” Her left hand motioned toward the door in the direction that Ergon had left early. “Or I can make a soup. Its got a bit more taste to it.”

He seemed to deflate when she mentioned another flavor of broth. The spoon left the bowl and he brought it to his lips to sip the liquid off. Just as he thought. There was a hint of taste to it. Mostly it felt like warm water on his tongue. “Soup might be better. It’ll be an actual meal.” At this point he wasn’t so sure he wasn’t eating boiled water.

She frowned at him as he said it would be an actual meal. “Sweetheart.. The broth is good for you. It helps to keep you warm. We can use soup too but its not meant to fill you up.” She walked over to stand behind him so she could put her hands on his shoulders. “We don’t want to risk you getting sick again.”

He sighed out and nodded. He understood what it was for but he didn’t like it. Being the sickly one sucked. If he was outside for too long then he’d end up shivering violently and come down with a cold the next day. His brother could play outside for hours. He could take archery lessons without needing to pause to get warmed. The furs were enough for Eirex so why couldn’t they be enough for him?

She watched his reaction and couldn’t help but feel saddened by it. So she moved over to where she could pull out the chair next to him and take a seat. Once she was at his level she reached over and laid a hand on his shoulder gently. “What’s bothering you so much? I can see it’s more than the broth.”
