“Momma, Momma!” The young Alkidike called out from amidst the disorder and chaos around her. The Oban’s were invading and the Alkidikes were preparing to go and meet them. But young Neska only knew that she couldn’t see either of her mothers anymore. They’d told her to stay at her grandmother’s hut... but she wanted to go with them! A small doll was clutched in her hands, a much loved and abused kinfa doll. Now she hugged it to her as she wandered the village looking for her parents.
An adult noticed her and grabbed her shoulder.
“You should not be here!”

“But.. momma….” Neska murmured and looked down at her feet. “Wanna be with momma….”

The tall warrior shook her head with a sigh and picked up the girl.
“Let’s get you to the nursery…. Someone there will know where to take you.” Neska struggled and wailed. “Noooo! Wanna go with momma!” Her small fists pounded and her feet kicked, but this tall stranger was made of sterner stuff and ignored the small pounding.

She stalked into the nursery, a house built to hold the younglings and keep them supervised while their parents were out hunting, and handed the wailing Neska off.
“This one was wandering about the preparation area.”

“Oh! Neska! You knew your mother’s were leaving... why were you a bad girl and left your grandmother’s hut?” The attendant, Liro exclaimed with exasperation.
“Wanna go with momma!” Neska wailed again.

Liro rolled her eyes and gave a nod of thanks to the warrior who’d brought the child. “My thanks. I’ll see she gets back to her grandmother.”

Neska, despite trying to slip off, found it much harder to escape from Liro than her grandmothers. When dusk fell, Lirio took the sniffling child back to her grandmother. “Just wait here, keep your granny company. Your mother’s will be back soon! Don’t worry.” Liro told her with a smile as she handed Neska over.
The days dragged on. Granny bored Neska; she wanted to go play in the woods with her momma! Or be taught how to cook by her other momma! So many things she wanted to do! She waited impatiently, her eyes always turning towards the windows or doors, hoping to see her mothers walking up to give her hugs and be with her again. But no matter how long she waited; her mother’s never returned. All that came back were their spears. A sorrowed Liro came with them one day.
“I’m sorry.” She whispered. “They were on the front lines and… the beasts of the Oban’s got them.”

At first Neska didn’t understand. But soon, as she saw her grandparents and extended family weep… she began to understand. Her mothers were not coming home… They’d left her and she’d never see them again!

The following weeks she struggled to keep her chin up; all she wanted to do was curl up in a ball and cry. But Granny needed her smile… And if she gave in to the tears, would she be able to stop?

The small child did her best, but her normal outgoing happiness was gone. She became more quiet, much sadder, and not very active. Her grandmother worried, but figured with time the wound would heal.

I met a tall and very plump sister. The evil Liro brought her in... apparently was to be taken away by this one. I wasn't very happy about it... but...Then she turned out to be nice. Said she wouldn't take me away from granmama till I was ready. Then I saw her Kinfa! I like Kinfa's!

Maybe we can get along?

Winter Is Coming
Prompt 1

The settlements of Tendaji all knew how to take care of themselves during the winter. Zena and Sauti received their usual snow fall, for Zena it was nearly year round and didn't faze them much at all; Tale and Jauhar seemed to retain most of their heat, dropping to milder temperatures; Matori and Oba seemed to flux between mild during the day and a sharp chill in the evenings. But usually it was all under control.

Word had passed through the elders and oracles and mystics that this winter was going to be a hard winter. The air would be sharp with cold and snow would fall in all areas of the world, something that had never happened before in Jauhar.

It came as a shock when the temperatures began to drop rapidly through the night. Most had thought that it was just a joke. There couldn't possibly be enough cold air to send snow to Jauhar. It was absurd. But it happened, and most of Tendaji wasn't prepared.

In the morning everything was frosted over, those in Zena and most of Sauti were barely able to open their doors the snow had risen so high overnight, and those in warmer climates could see the sheet of frost on the ground and the plants around them.

If the winter was going to be a long one, they would have to salvage what they could and come up with a plan...

Neska was a bit miffed when Vollerei decided to stop at her old... house and stay there to ride out the supposed storm coming. Neska did not think much of this… house. It was, basically, several huge leaves tied together with vines to form a bubble over an intersection of two huge branches. It was far more primitive than she was used to, no mats, rough ‘floor,’ and no windows! But she put on a smile and tried to think of it as an adventure. Adventures involved far more than traveling she was discovering… lots more that she was really not sure she liked at all! But it was for a Kinfa! So.. it would be fine… She’d deal with it. And Momma was having fun, she could tell that… though perhaps, Neska thought, it was due to meeting and traveling with the Niabi lady.

Niabi was okay so far; Neska didn’t dislike her like she had Liiro and the woman wasn’t terrible. But to Neska, Niabi was someone who would take away from her time with Vollerei! This adventure was, in addition to getting her a kinfa, a trial period to see if this Niabi was an acceptable woman. If she wasn’t acceptable, Neska thought with a determined frown, she would make sure Vollerei knew her displeasure!

With this thought she went to sleep, curled up nestled against the warmth of Vollerei and the feathers of Zweil. It was chilly, far chillier than she’d ever seen in the jungle before! Almost as chilly as that land covered in white they’d visited briefly!

She awoke to a chilly darkness. Peeking out from beneath the blankets she looked about. It was dark inside the leaf bubble, and strangely silent. Normally the jungle was filled with sounds; the patter of rain, the chirps of birds, hums of insects, screeches of other animals… But today there was none. Just a still silence. And cold. Her forehead wrinkled at this thought. Thrusting a hand out she felt a chill in the air that was not normal. The jungle was hot and humid! Well, not hot hot anymore, since it was winter. To Neska winter meant it wasn’t sweltering… but this chill was far too weird! She wriggled out from Vollerei’s warm hug, taking her blanket with her. Wrapping herself in it she crept over to ‘door’ in the leaves. She wrinkled her nose as she approached; the branch floor was cold! And the draft coming from the small opening froze her tiny feet as she padded over. Bending down her eyes widened as she saw pale delicate patterns of white upon the leaf’s edge and the branch. Bending down she reached a small hand out to touch it. It was cold! … And wet… She picked her finger up to see moisture on it and that the white patterns had also melted. Is this… that snow tuff I played in? She bent down to peek out the small opening of the door. Her breath turned into mist much to her shock; and the white patterns melted as the mist hit it. It’s not that snow stuff! Snow stuff didn’t just.. melt like that! At least not to her rather limited knowledge it didn’t!

She looked over as Vollerei muttered and stirred in her sleep. Momma’s gonna be sleeping a while yet, I’ll just go outside and see what is making this white pattern and chill! She smiled as she undid enough of the ties on the door to let her out. This was cold, but fun!
A strange sight awaited her beyond the door; a jungle coated in frost! The crystals nearby glittered and painted the frost in their colors. The fern like designs of the frost encrusted the leaves, vines, and branches all around her. She stood, shivering slightly, breath misting as she watched the silent jungle. The cold must be what’s making it so quiet, she thought. The animals here aren’t used to it. She smiled; this scene looked magical to her; sure it was cold and she wasn’t sure she could deal with it, but it was a beautiful quiet scene. Something worth remembering and treasuring! She shivered and turned back to go inside, leaving the frosted jungle to slowly attempt to warm up in the early dawn light.

I wonder if this is why Momma wanted to stay here for a bit, she thought. Since I know she mentioned something about a frost (what ever that is) and warnings of freezing from the mystics.

After the frigid chill of the harsh winter had left Tendaji, it seemed that most were happy to just return to their normal routines, though the normal routine didn’t seem to be what the weather had in mind. It wasn’t long before almost everywhere noticed the way that the winter air had seemed to push precipitation onto the land in its place. Rain flowed seemingly non-stop, reaching all the areas of Tendaji, even frozen Zena saw its share of rain, though the temperatures were still much too cold to support such a thing and rain turned to hail, which froze over the ground.

The critters of Tendaji only wanted to seek shelter from their flooded homes and the wet downpour that surrounded them. They found their way into homes, huts, sheds, anywhere that could stay dry - and preferrably warm.

Roll 2D4
Roll 1: The type of familiar in the area you encounter.

xxxxxTale || 1: Virma, 2: Merik, 3: Kuona, 4: Poscuta
Poscuta (pl. Poscutas) - The small Poscuta live primarily amongst Tale's colorful, twisted trees and so are relatively used to coming into contact with members of the Leaf Tribe. Their long snouts are full of sharp teeth, allowing them to crunch away at the Savannah's crystallized grass; they are opportunistic omnivores and will eat just about anything to fill their bellies.. Their large ears help to keep them cool and are quite adept at detecting predators from a surprising distance.

Roll 2: How many are encountered.

Neska was alone at the camp while Vollerei and Niabi were off trying to capture her a kinfa. She was a bit sad to not go; but she knew that she had no skills at sneaking about and would give them away. Plus, she thought to herself with a smile, this way Momma and Niabi have some alone time! She knew her mother was interested in the quiet Alkidike, and Neska was thinking she saw some glances from Niabi that could mean a favorable romance in the future! It would be nice to have two mothers again… and it would make mother really happy! And maybe I can have a little sister! She thought with a giggle as she snuggled down next to Mimi, her potsuca.

The sound of chittering and Mimi leaving her arms woke her up briefly but she rolled over, careless of the fact that there squeaking was increasing. As she slept peacefully, unaware of what was happening the heavy rains increased. Already days of unusually heavy rainfall had caused streams and rivers to flood, filling up the tunnels and homes of animals. The dry tale landscape meant that the tunnels filled up quickly after the ground became saturated… leaving the potsuca in the area looking for a dry place to rest. The sound and scent of a foreign potsuca drew them to Neska’s tent and Mimi was quite happy to see fellows after a long time away on the Chibale isles.

Neska awoke to warmth; sot furry objects lying all over her and the soft whisper of sleeping potsuca. Sitting up she looked around, bewildered to see all the animals. They were slightly smaller than Mimi... mostly.
Different shades of browns, some whites, and a few reddish tinted ones were curled about her, using every blanket as cushioning.

Good thing Mothers not here! She’d take the chance to catch a whole bunch for breakfast! Neska could understand it... but she liked potsucas! To her they were friendly… She looked around, trying to see where Mimi was.
Her eyes spied Mimi curled on the pack Vollerei had left behind; and curled about her was a larger black and grey potsuca.

“Aww… Did you find a mate?” She asked gently to Mimi who flicked and ear in response.
What to do? Neska wondered. She peeked outside and realized that these guys were just wet and cold! I’ll build them a shelter; she smiled as she thought this. There was really only the extra tarp in Vollerei’s pack, but it was better than nothing right? Humming to herself, she sid out from underneath the potsucas on her blanket and scattered a few of the ones on the pack as she got the extra tarp out. Looking back, she saw that her warm spot beneath the blanket had been taken up already. Chuckling she shook her head and head out into the rain.

Used to the down pours of Jauhur this didn’t bother her at all! She first tied the tarp across a section between the nearby trees where they’d set up camp. She tilted the tarp so it drained the rain down the back, and kept it fairly low to the ground so rain didn’t blow under it. Then she set about gathering grasses and fallen wood to make an impromptu floor for the tiny covering. This way they can rest here and not get too wet! Still cold… but it was better than nothing!

Then, curious as to what else was out in Tale, she took a walk; looking at the wet and grey landscape. It was so strange to see rolling hills, small valleys and grasslands.
Pretty, but weird. The rain made it seem more like home; but even it was different! The sound was what really drove home the difference. Before the rain would have a soft pattering as it drained down the thick leaved and foliage of the jungle. Out here it just hit the ground, tinkling as the crystalline grass quivered under the heavy rain. Instead of a soft shushing noise, it was far more a tinkling and almost a rushing sound all around. No wonder they came into my tent! She thought as she shivered; this was no warm jungle rain! It was chilly.

Muttering to herself, she wandered back to her tent, dried off and dove back into her blankets, cuddling with her new found (and very temporary) friends for warmth. Wonder if momma’s warm enough out there? Or is using this as an excuse to cuddle with Niabi? Neska thought sleepily with a smile as she fell back to sleep.
