Vollerei yawned and stretched in the early morning light. Sitting up and grumbling as she stumbled about the slightly too small space, she quickly dressed and brushed her hair.
Since she’d been gone for so long, her sister Denker had slowly but surely taken over her side of the room. Now that she was back, it seemed like she was always stepping on or over her sister’s things.
“I should go make my own house,” she muttered to herself as she looked at the mess. It’ mean she had to keep it clean and cook everything herself. But then I’ve been doing that for the last year or so, she thought to herself. Won’t make too much a difference.
She pulled back the curtain that separated her part of the room from Denker’s and moved to sit on top of her sister’s sleeping form.
“Morning sleepy head.” She said as she started to bounce on top of her sister.
“Akk! Off! Volle! Stop it!” Her sister’s muffled voice cried out.
“Then get up.” Vollerei responded as she lay back and squished her sister.
“Ugh! I can’t if you’re laying on me!”
“Hmm... maybe I should take a nap here. Though your bony carcass isn’t too comfy.” Vollerei teased her sister. After a few seconds of chuckling at the dire threats her sister threw her way, Vollerei sat up and walked out of the room. “Mmm, Ma’s made breakfast. Better hurry or I’ll eat your share!”
Denker threw a pillow at her retreating back, causing Volle to chuckle again. Being home was nice; teasing her sister was fun. I missed that, she thought.
“Morning Ma’s.” She said to Sube and Saure who sat about the table.
“Morning Vollerei.” Sube responded with a sweet smile. “Did you wake Denker up?”
“Yup. I sat on her.” Vollerei said with a grin as she sat down and piled food onto her plate. Her mothers shook their heads. Something’s never changed no matter how old the children got.
“Quick question, what do I need to do to get a house?” She asked her parents before she dug into her food. Denker came into the room to hear the last bit,
“What?! You’re leaving already?” She said. “You just came home though.” She looked sad and appealed to the parents.
“Well, the rooms all filled with your stuff now Denk.” Vollerei said after she swallowed. “And it’s not like I’m going far away! A small house near here will work. Besides,” she looked at her parents with a grin. “We’re big girls now… well... I am at least. And the house is small.”
Saure laughed and nodded while Denker made upset noises. “It is… cramped in here. I can help you find the materials and get a few of the Sisters to help build a house. Unless you find one already built that’s empty or just needs fixing up.”
“I am too a big girl.” Denker muttered. “And it’s not cramped.”
“Is too.” Volle responded. “Side’s, I’ve lived on my own for a while now so it feels like I’m trying to fit into a too small space.”
Sube nodded. “It happens to everyone. This is where you were a child, so now that you are an adult and back here, it’s like you’re trying to fit into a child’s spot again. The house shouldn’t be an issue really. And if it’s nearby you can always come over for meals or to pester Denker.”
“Or take Denker with you.” Suare spoke up in her gravelly voice. “Be nice to have the house to ourselves again.” She leered at her wife while Denker rolled her eyes.
“You’ve never let that stop you before….” She muttered as she finally sat down to eat.
“I won’t go too far, Denk.” Volle said to her sister. “I’m not planning on leaving the Isles for a while. The whole War screwed up my plans on eating all the food from everywhere so I might as well just wait here for a year or so to see where things go.”
Her family smiled when they heard her goal. “That’s just like You Volle,” Denker giggled. “Eating all the food in the world…”
Vollerei shrugged. It was what she liked doing and who cared what others thought about it. “And if I get a place, you can come there to escape the parents… and I can have you take care of it should I need to leave or something.” It would work out. She smiled as she finished her plate. “Want to go show me about Ma?” She said to Saure. “You mentioned fixing a house up, that sounds better than making a new one.”
Later that day, after she and her mother had wandered about looking at the older houses that had been abandoned, they finally found one that looked decent enough.
Standing in the middle of its abandoned wreckage, Vollerei looked around at the walls and floor. “It’s sturdy enough and just the roof needs replacing.”
“A good cleaning, and new furniture will make it livable.” Saure agreed. “You have anything to barter for them?” She asked her daughter.
“Mmm, some. Liro knows some people I can ask for help with as well.”
“Ah.. Liro.” Saure said in a leading tone. Vollerei cocked and eyebrow and looked challenging at her mother, refusing to answer.
“Well. I have heard some things about her….”
“…”
“Decent girl…”
“…”
“But there’s some not good things….”
“…”
“You’re making this difficult.”
“Uh huh.”
Suare sighed. “Okay, bluntly. Liro is very flighty. Don’t get too attached.”
Vollerei frowned. “Mother…”
“Hush Volle.” Saure gave her a stern look. “Yes I know. First girl to be attracted to you and give you compliments. It’s heady stuff, I know. But… I don’t feel like she’s the one for you, sweet heart. She doesn’t really know you.”
Vollerei opened her mouth then closed it, thinking before she responded. “Well, she could get to know me.”
“She could.”
“Your tone suggests otherwise?”
“She likes variety.” Saure shrugged. “And exotic-ness. You just happen to be one of a line of odd balls’s she’s attracted too.” Vollerei gave a small smile.
She had heard things.. but heck. It was fun being with Liro!
“Well... I like being with her… so I’ll just enjoy the ride but be aware, alright?”
“And that’s the other reason.” Saure looked at her daughter with a sad gentle expression. “You don’t love her either do you? You’re trying to, but you can’t feel what Sube and I feel for each other do you?”
Vollerei looked out of the ramshackle window before sighing and looking back at her mother. “No. And I feel terrible about it. Like, when we’re together it’s fun. Then when we aren’t… I don’t think of her. Not really. And I’ve heard that when you’re in love, you think of the other constantly. Only thing I think about constantly is food.”
Saure gave her daughter a hug and shook her head. “Well. Maybe one day you’ll find someone that makes you think of them more than food…”
“Ha.” Vollerei said with a smile. “Somehow, I doubt it! But… let’s go see some people about fixing this place up. I’ll deal with Liro and that situation later.”
And she would… perhaps she needed to be upfront with her friend. Maybe Liro won’t mind being friends with benefits… It’d be nice, Vollerei thought to herself as they left. I like being with her, it is quite fun and pleasurable… but… Food is still better. .
