So What do Myths Eat?

It was the second day after Liang had come to be part of the family, and Ul was stumped. All of her other children had normal diets, with the exception of Teagan. But he was just a vegetarian and that was easy enough to work with. But Liang, she was a mythical being; she wasn't even supposed to exist. So what did she eat? The techs at the lab had told her she liked all sorts of nuts, but surely she couldn't just live off of nuts? Liang was across from her at the table, munching happily away at a bowl of cashews and hazelnuts, comfortable enough to have put her fan down while she ate. Ul propped herself up on her elbows, looking the girl over skeptically, "So what do you really eat?" Liang blinked, not sure what the question meant. The nuts were real, she could feel and taste and see them. That made them real, didn't it? To demonstrate her thoughts, she held a hazelnut up to Ul, "Real." Ul smiled, alternate meanings fell on deaf ears. "I mean-" She tried again, this time rethinking how she phrased it, "Is there anything else you like to eat?" Liang shook her head and fluffed up the feathers on her wings, "No." So that's all she'd ever been fed? Fatty, not-very-good-for-you nuts? Ul sighed, she could either let the girl eat whatever she wanted despite the health risk, or she could try to feed her something a bit better. What did birds eat? That was the closest thing to what Liang was, so it made sense. Birds liked bread right? She could try that first, maybe she'd like that?

Well, for a first try, toast wasn't an utter failure. Liang didn't really like fresh bread, but she did seem to like dry toast. To Ul's displeasure though, she got upset whenever someone tried to put something on it. Dry toast, even whole wheat, wasn't much of a step up from nuts. Maybe a muffin would fare better. Ul searched the pantry as Liang nibbled on her toast, cursing Tea, the teenage garbage disposal, when she found he had eaten all of the normal sized muffins. Luckily though, she had gotten a box of wild berry muffin bites for herself, but it Liang liked them she was more than willing to give them up. "Heads up," she said, tossing a little package of them to Liang. The tot eeked and dropped her toast on the floor, but resisted grabbing her fan back up to hide. She stared at the package for a few seconds before curiously poking a finger at it, "What?" Ul rolled her eyes, toddlers were so skeptical. Picking the package up with shortening patience, she yanked it open and tossed it back to Liang.

A bit rolled out onto the table and Liang, still a bit hungry, picked it up and popped it into her mouth. She froze, and Ul was a bit worried that she had choked. But after a moment the girl let out a squeak, grabbed the bag, and started gobbling them down. When she was done, Ul grinned, "Good?" Liang nodded quickly, "Good! More!" Ul did a little victory dance. Score two for parents.

Dirt never hurt anyone. [Liang and Arith]

This was the very first day that Liang showed her tomboy side. Most of the family didn't know what to do with her, so she was sent off to the park with Teagan in the hopes that she would burn off her energy and return to her normal self. She went clothed in an outfit from when Teagan was a toddler, and came home streaked in dirt and grass stains, something she would never do on a normal day. She hasn't told anyone much, but then again she doesn't speak very often, but from what Teagan gathered she was playing baseball with a husky boy who she called Arith. She calmed right down when they got home. Maybe next time she goes into one of her moods we'll just send her to play with another of the D-Corp children?

Time for a little Ed-ja-ma-cation

Teagan looked across the kitchen table at Liang, perplexed by the fact that the child didn't look away, or close her her eyes, or turn her head, or anything a normal kid would do. Mora walked by on her way to the fridge, stopping when she noticed the two were still at the table, "What are you... What are you doing?" Tea shooed her away with a hand, "Staring contest." Mora rolled her eyes, pulling Liang's chair out from the table and turning it away, "Yeah. I don't think Mom would appreciate you dumbing her down. Besides, she dropped some stuff off before she went to her second job." She took a set of folded up papers, two or three, from her back pocket and set them on the table, "I think Mom wanted her to do these, they're like ABCs or something." Tea sighed, taking the papers and unfolding them. Who needed the alphabet? It had never helped him, most of the stuff he learned when he still went to school was useless. But if Mom wanted the girl to learn them then whatever. "Here, these are for you," He said, shoving the papers toward Liang, "There are some crayons in the drawer over there."

After an hour or two, the girl was done, and had apparently learned something in the process of her coloring. She was now scribbling on a seperate piece of paper, practicing the letters she had just learned. Ul had come home a few minutes ago, and when she looked over the girl's shoulder to check her progress, she was amazed. Not only had the girl been practicing the letters on her own, but she had colored in the lines too. Everything was so neat, so meticulous, it was eerie.

[Event] St. Patricks Day Hunt!

User Image

Well, St. Patricks Day was Liang's very first holiday, and we went to D-Corp for a little treasure hunt. At first she was skeptical, and she didn't seem to want to participate very much. But, as she found more and more clues she really seemed to get into it and shirk a bit of her usual shyness. By the time she reached the end she was smiling and running, and actually seemed like she was enjoying herself. When she opened her bag she found a spinning top, some shamrock gummies, and two chunks of gold which Kat has told her are 'real gold' not fool's gold or anything. She seems thrilled with the whole thing, and is glad that she went instead of staying home.

Going grey at barely eighteen!
Written by Ul

Well, it's been exactly ten days since Liang arrived, and it seems like it's been so much longer. The child that had been the easiest to care for, Tangia, has grown into a lovely toddler. But, she's rather listless, and she wanders around with no apparent purpose. Liang seems to love her though, and she's formed a strange attachment. Tangia is awake almost twenty-four hours a day now, with that same quiet, sullen demeanor that Liang likes. It's strange, up until now Liang has only attached herself to the oldest, strongest male near her, but with Tangia, it's different. She doesn't depend on her like she does to Teagan when they're out somewhere. It's more of a... Symbiotic relationship I guess you could call it. They play together and talk to each other for most of the day. Liang gets her nice quiet friend and Tangia gets a child her own age that accepts her. Tangia has random times during the day where she'll start sobbing though, not making any noise, just tears flowing down her cheeks. Liang still seems to find this show of emotion uncomfortable and usually runs off or hides when it happens instead of comforting her. She's been getting along about the same she did the first few days with the female Relis, not extremely well, but not badly.

As for the boys. Well, she does have a liking for Teagan. I hate to say it, but he is a strong young man, and she looks to him for some sort of emotional and physical shield. I don't think he sees her quite the same way, though he does appreciate her "colorful beauty", as he put it. Roscoe is strong, but a bit short, so Liang only hangs around him when Teagan is away. Jack is... Insane. She hates him, no doubt about it. Liang isn't one to show much emotion in front of people, but when it comes to the vicious little toddler, she's more than enthusiastic. On one occasion, she even hit him with a toy to keep him away and Teagan had to come rushing in and rescue her from the boy's knife assault. Now she stays away from him at all costs.

She's been practicing those first six letters over and over, she says she wants to get them perfect before she does anymore. I'm going to try and get her to try the next six tommorow or the day after, just the first six letters of the alphabet won't get her very far in life. She's made two friends, well I guess you could call them friends, who were also from D-Corp. A hyperactive boy, Keanu and another boy, Arith. She seems to interact better with boys than most girls, but I think I'll try and set up a few play sessions with some girls, she doesn't seem like the type to be a tomboy. Except well, that one day, but I think that was a fluke.

Get on with it - Alphabet blues

Liang had spent an unbearable amount of time drawing and redrawing her first six letters. Unbearable in Teagan's mind at least. So, to ease his own impatience, the teenager devised a new system to teach his little sister the alphabet. He wanted her to learn them, sure, but he also wanted to get to the numbers. Numbers were always easier for him than letters, the rules were always definite, no "except in"s or "only if"s in math. None that he'd come to at least. Besides, there had been jelly beans when he learned numbers and adding, and this time he could offer to be the teacher. Sure, he might eat a few of them himself, but she would get some too, and she would learn quick. He knew Liang was smart, she just preferred for someone else to step up with the answer. People never thought of the lemur teen as being very smart, mainly because, he didn't try to kid himself, he just wasn't very smart. But, he was good at reading people. What good would reading and math do him if he wasn't good with people? None, so he prided himself on being a good conversationalist instead. His system was simple, he wouldn't give her any other choice. The girl lived to please, so all he would have to do is get all the worksheets out of the kitchen drawer and give them to her, with about half an hour for her to do each. That worked out to.. Twenty six letters minus six she'd already done.. That was twenty, so twenty letters with three per sheet was six sheets of three and one of two, so seven sheets total. Tea felt accomplished because of his "mathematical genius", even if it was just simple stuff. Seven sheets would be about four hours, then they could start the fun stuff, numbers. That wouldn't be that bad, it wasn't like they would spend the whole day working on them, just some of it. Some of one day was better than all of a week, right?

By the time Liang woke up he had everything all set up. He had laid out the sheets in a nice little stack on the table with a sheet of practice paper between each of the sheets. To get her interested, he had set a bowl of strawberry yogurt with granola sprinkled over it, and the sweet treat seemed to work. When she came downstairs, fully dressed, clean, with her hair swept up perfectly in just a matter of minutes, she instantly went for the bowl. While she was eating, he dropped himself into a seat and brought her attention to the sheets with a smile and a point, "Ready to get these done?" She started to protest, a sign that usually meant she was either still tired or truly against the idea, but stopped when he drooped his ears and pouted. Replacing her frown with a shy smile, she agreed, "Yes big brother."

Armed with an egg timer and a set of weights to amuse himself, Teagan managed to push Liang on through the day, only letting her slip on the time limit once or twice. With each sheet she finished he gave her hints about his 'big surprise' that he had thought of half way through the first sheet. It was actually something he had planned to give her for a while, but now seemed like a good idea. Positive reinforcement was a good thing, right? As the day wore on, Liang kept at the sheets like a real trooper, even naming the objects that they boasted and repeating the sound the letters make. She was getting into it now, anticipating both the smile on her brother's face and his mystery present. When the big timer went off, Tea was dozing, but the Ding stirred him awake. He turned to Liang with a grin, glad to see she had continued with his limit, "Did you learn something today?" She nodded, holding up her worn down box of crayons, "Yes big brother, I did." He picked her up and gave her a kiss on the cheek, spinning her around once before putting her back down in her chair, "Good, now let me just put these away and get you your present." He vanished off to the den, where he set the sheets down on his mother's desk, each marked accordingly.

Once he was satisfied that the papers were marked and in order, he rustled through the drawers to looks for his present. With a smile, he picked up the parcel and wrapped it in a layer of pastel tissue paper. When he brought it out to her, he had it hidden behind her back, and she seemed giddy with excitement. Doing a little twirl, he set it down in front of her and dropped into a chair, "Go ahead, open it. And be honest, tell me what you think." She unwrapped it carefully, her eyes going wide when she saw what it was, "It's..." She couldn't quite find the word, but after a few seconds it came to her, "It's lovely! Thank you big brother."

Numbers, the headache or the sugar crash?

For all of her hard work on the alphabet, Liang had asked for the rest of the day and the next morning to herself. It wasn't much time really, after meals, clean up time, and sleep, but she managed it well. She spent most of the evening combing her hair and inspecting her new fan. Her hair was rarely tangled, but she combed it two hundred times twice a day, too keep it shiny and healthy. And the fan her brother had given her, it was gorgeous. She especially loved the character painted on it, and the birds. Well, she thought they were birds, Mora said they were butterflies, but birds could be just as graceful. The best part of it was that they seemed to sparkle whenever she moved it, in the most beautiful pastel colors too. The frame was a hollow metal too, might lighter and stronger than her wooden one, and it would look nice with her more formal cheongsams. Her mother had taken her shopping for the gorgeous silk and satin dresses, and they had been hard to find until the two had stumbled upon a Chinese import store. Now, instead of lonely and unwanted sitting on racks, four of the gowns, each a different pastel shade from pink to white, hung on padded hangers in her closet. That night she placed the fan on her bedside table. Tucking her wings back and cocooning herself up in her blankets, she went to bed.

Her free time the next morning was spent practicing her penmanship and calligraphy. She prided herself on the her penmanship, even if it was still a bit shaky. And her calligraphy, it was a skill she prided herself on for its beauty and long history of being a 'proper' art for women. But when noon came around, Teagan was in charge. He had set the table up the same way as with the alphabet, with the 1 to 10 worksheet set with a stack of notebook paper beside her lunch. This time the yogurt was vanilla, a flavor that she usually ate as a snack because it was so light. This was his justification for the two giant bags of jelly beans. Surely after such a light lunch she would need something to snack on while they worked. And, even though she knew it was an excuse for him to down mass amounts of sugar, their mother had agreed and got the candy for them. He didn't give Liang a time limit to color the sheet, it was just one sheet after all, and he wanted her to get these right.

By the time she was finished with the worksheet, Teagan had already plowed through half a bag of jelly beans. With a smile, he dumped the remainder of the bag out on the table, "Ok, we're going to practice those now, sound good?" She nodded and tucked away her crayons, giving him her usual response of, "Yes big brother." Leaving the worksheet on the table as a reference, Tea started to ask her to put them in certain groups, starting at one, two, and three and moving on up as she got them right. By the time they got to ten, she was getting a bit bored of scooting the beans around over and over. So Teagan jumbled up the rules a bit. Whatever number she could count up to would be the number of them she could eat that time around. On her first try she made it up to four, so she got to pick out four jelly beans to munch on while he went over them again. Her second try was much better, seven. On her third try, she made it all the way up to ten and celebrated by reaching over and giving her brother a big hug. "We're not done yet," he laughed, pointing to the remaining pile of jelly beans, "We still need to finish these."

They went on with their game for a while, until the last jelly bean of the bag was gone and they were both sugar sick. There was still another bag left, a full one, but that could wait for another day. Teagan really was a good teacher when he could keep both himself and his student focused. After all, when there was praise sugar and celebratory hugs involved, concentrating was easy. Like the letter sheets, he set Liang's number sheet marked on their mother's desk, then went to take a nap with Liang to sleep off the sugar headache that was coming on.

May 25th, 2006

I am becoming more used to call Miss Ul Mother. She is a good person and she tries very hard to make sure her children are taken care of and happy. I have gotten a bit bigger, and my cheongsams fit nicely now. Brother Teagan says I am destined to be a beauty, that God decided that early on for me. I don't know about that, but I didn't say anything about it to him. I know how sensitive he is about his faith and things like that. I have been practicing my diction, maybe some day I will be able to speak well enough to deliver a speech. That would be nice, but I do not think I will ever have that much courage. Cousin Jack has taught me that there are some people in the world that really do live to hurt others, and though I wish he could learn another way of thinking, I am thankful I was given the change to learn. Brother Teagan had told me that I should learn to stand up for myself, and I suppose I should, but only around him. There is no reason why I should have people hate me just because I feel a need to stand up and yell how I feel. He does not seem to understand why I behave the way I do, but then again, he has never been a girl such as me.

I don't go to church as often as the rest of my family, in fact I don't think I've ever stayed the whole service with them. It gets so boring, I don't know why. I suppose I just don't find the same comfort in those sermons that they do. Maybe I will find my niche in religion someday. For now I am just happy to know that the people are me are kind and goodhearted, for the most part anyway. Whatever force did create them, they did a good job.

Take the plunge (Ala and Liang)

During a trip to the park with the intention of curing her fear of flight, Liang ran into a young koala girl name Alaqua. At first Liang was planning to simply give up and go home, but Ala encouraged her to stick it out and face her fears. She also inadvertently taught Liang how to climb. After a bit of prodding, Liang finally jumped and suprised herself by not crashing. Ala's advice to not look at the ground, at least not at first, gave her the confidence to fly despite her fear. She already had the ability, but she had tricked herself into believing that no matter how many times she tried she was always going to fail. Her strongest fear, that of crashing when she tried to land, was always overcome, with both a tree and a ground landing. She's glad she met Ala, and would love to see her again sometime when she's a better flyer.
