((Delphine's Arrival))

Kay

Dear Diary;

I can't believe what happened today! If you were alive diary, I'm sure you be laughing at me right about now. But you're not alive which is good, because if you were you could probably tell people what I've written in you, which would not be good.

Um...

Oh yes! A really amazing thing happened today. Strange, but still amazing. I guess I'm still kind of in shock about the whole thing.

Anyway, I'll start at the beginning. I'd decided to go for my usual morning stroll around Durem. The architecture is nice to look at and there's usually a good chance of someone - alive or dead that needs help.

Er..

Oh that's right! I was walking down that street that has all those magic shops on it, can't resist that occult jewelery! <3 There was the shop that I hadn't really noticed before. The window was full of all sorts of potions, so I went to check it out. I thought that maybe they'd have some decent crystal balls for sale or something.

So I was poking around at all the potions and things, when this woman speaks up. I almost had a heart attack. So she says that her name is Maggie and that this glowy eyed cat statue thingy think's I'm a potential guardian.

Ok...

So I ask her what she thinks I could be a guardian of. I was not going to go on some stupid quest or something because of a mysterious person making me protector of some piece of ancient jewlery. You wouldn't believe how often that happens...

But then this tall person, really longs limbs and neck; comes out. Apparantly he's called Jabir and is a 'Magical Mishap'. So I ask him what kind of potion did he stick his head in. >.< Maggie explains that he was created from a spell gone wrong. So after that little misunderstanding Jabir, nice fellow really, eh-heh, presents me with the most adorable baby I have ever seen!

She has gorgeous golden eyes and the most fluffy hair! And she's covered in fins and has these markings that look kind of familiar.

So they tell me I could become this baby's guardian!

Whoah!

So I asked for a few minutes to let things soak in a bit and then I ran like heck outta the shop and down the street.
After walking around for awhile I felt kinda bad. The poor little thing had no parents or anything. And I did feel this pang, I had been thinking about children alot lately, must be getting to that age, bleh...

So I went back.

Who am I to argue with fate and mysterious baby bestowning people?

Maggie was all smiling and stuff like she knew I'd be back. I hate it when people get all knowing on me, that's my job! So she handed me the baby girl and a key and then Jabir took me to what is going to be the baby's home - and mine too I guess.

Apparently the 'headquaters' as they are known are quite extensive and many other people who have adopted Mishaps live here to. Neat. Looks like there'll be exploring on the agenda.

I'm caring the baby girl the whole time - Delphine as I have named her. She kept looking up at me with her bright baby eyes all curious and stuff. And I felt all, I dunno, proud and protective.

So here I am, with a tiny person I'm going to raise and teach and love.

...And spoil, I heard something about a shop in headquaters!

Later Diary!

- Kay

((Delphine's Eating Habits))

Delphine sat in her sturdy playpen in the middle of the living room floor. Her mama was bustling around somewhere putting away all the things that she and Delphine had bought earlier that day. She smiled and chewed on the ear of the kangaroo plushie her mama had let her pick all by herself. Looking at all the brightly colored things had been fun, and her mama had fussed over her the whole time, holding up things for her to see and letting her pick up the things she liked.
Letting go of the now drool covered ear, she turned the kangaroo upside down and uncurled her long but still chubby legs. She looked at the plushie intently, it had long legs and paws just like hers. Was she a Roo too?
"Woo" she said kicking her legs. "Woo!"

Kay emerged from her bedroom and plonked something down on the modern coffee table. At Delphine's baby talk, she clasped her hands together and a wild grin burst on her face. "Delphi!" she said gleefully bending down to pick the Mishap out of the playpen. "Aren't you clever!"
She cradled Delphi gently in her arms and gave her tummy a playful poke. "You'll be giving university lectures in no time. Or maybe you'll be a famous author?"

Delphi just looked up her with wide eyes and gave a giggle when her tummy was poked. She didn't understand anything that her mama had said really, but she enjoyed the proud way her mama talked and knew she was talking about her.

Kay sat down on the floor infront of the coffee table and sat Delpine in her lap so she could see and reach the object she had placed there. "See Delphi, I got us some pets!" The seer said tapping the side of the fishbowl and causing the fish to swim around quickly. "They're fish and have fins like you do."

Delphine's cat-like eyes followed the fishes movement around and around the bowl; her kitty tail gave a gentle swish.
"Eee!" She suddenly said excitedly, "Ish! Blee!" She burbled on in her baby voice and made the universal grabby hand motion that meant she wanted to go for a closer look.

Kay gently pulled the fishbowl closer to the edge of the table, pleased that Delphine was interested in the fish. She'd been slightly worried that she'd ignore them completely. She held the little Mishap up so she could see into the bowl better. "I'm not sure what to name them yet Delphi, but we'll think of something soon."

Delphine's tail swished rather more wildly as she gained a better look at the things moving round and round in the water. As her face got closer to the bowl, her nose gave a tiny twitch. with a small struggle she managed to get herself close enough and her hand quickly splashed into the bowl, her tiny fist closing around one of the poor fishies.
Before her guardian could do anything, the fish had been popped into her mouth fist and all.

"Delphi!" Kay wailed causing the Mishap in question to flinch slightly. "No no dear, fishies aren't for eating!" Panicing slightly she managed to pull Delphi's fist from her mouth, it emerged with a pop still cluching the scared little fish. Unwrapping the tiny drool covered fist from around the little fish and plopping it back into the bowl, Kay pulled Delphi closer to her and examined her face intently looking for any sign that the fish had hurt her or made her ill.

Delphi had paused for a moment, slightly stunned. Then her brow began to furrow. Her mama had taken the tasty thing away! Wasn't that the reason she'd given it to her? Her bottom lip trembled as her mama checked her over. She wanted her tasty thing back! Delphine sucked in a lungful of air and then let out and almighty howl. "Ishie!!! Wanna! Ishiiiiie!!" Rivers of tears erupted as she began to thrash her limbs about and puff her fins out. "Waaaaaaaaa!!!"

A look of extreme panic adhered itself to Kay's face. She held Delphi more tightly so as not to drop her with her thrashing around. Standing up Kay walked around the s**c-and-span living room bouncing the wailing Mishap in her arms. "Shh!" The terified guardian crooned trying to calm down her charge. "Hush now Delphi. You want Roo?" She asked switching the thrashing Mishap to a hip and picking up the plushie with a free hand.

Delphi paused mid wail as the plushie was proffered to her. Did she look like she wanted Roo? "Ishie!" she wailed at the top her her tiny lungs as she shoved the plushie away as forcefully as she could.

Kay wandered around and around the living room at her wits end. She couldn't let Delphine eat the fish! But nothing seemed to be calming the kitty-fish Mishap down. She tried singing, reading, all the toys, and every baby safe food item in the kitchen. Nothing worked! She slunk onto one of the leather covered barstools and bounced Delphine on one knee, watching the wailing Mishap swish her tail about madly and puff her fins out as far as they could go.
Eyes widening, Kay stood up, she'd had an idea. She deposited the slightly suprised Delphine into her highchair and went to rummage around in the volumnous pantry.
A few minutes later she emerged with a triumphant yell, a can of tuna flakes grasped in one hand. Grabbing a plastic baby bowl, decorated with little fish no less, she opened the can, placed a few slices in and offered it to Delphine.

"Ishii-eh?" Delphine stopped her wailing and gave a suprised hiccup. What was her mama doing now? As the bowl of tuna was placed infont of her, her kitty nose twitched wildly and her tail gave a sudden flick.
Chubby fingers entered the bowl and grasped around the tuna. With a final sniff, Delphine shoved the lot into her mouth. "Isshie" she blurbled happily, drool and tuna hunks rolling down her chin. It didn't taste quite the same as the thing she'd tried earlier, but it was even better! With a smile she began to messily shovel the rest of it into her mouth.

With a sigh of relief Kay sat down onto the stool beside her and slid a pad of paper across the bench. It looked like she'd have to do some shopping pretty soon. But for now she'd just sit here and ejnoy the quiet.

((After the first meeting))

Kay flopped down onto the comfortable sofa, exhausted. Delphine was snoozing away in her playpen, arms wrapped tightly around a beanbag. She hadn't been very happy at not being able to have Roo with her for her nap, but the poor plushie was still far to wet and was currently sitting all alone in the bathroom sink.

The tired guardian reached over and pulled her journal and pencil off the coffee table and snuggled back into the sofa. She whispered something over the journal and then opened it to a blank page.

Journal Entry

Dear Diary;

Well today was certainly a busy and eventful day. I merely meant to go for a short stroll with Delphine, but we ended up bumping into another mishap and guardian. And we also ended up getting very wet.

Gullien seemed rather nice, although a bit brusque when I mentioned trying to use Delphine to get a vision of her past. But I probably deserved it, seeing as I hadn't thought through what might exactly happen if I tried it.

Thylassa was just adorable! I can only hope Delphine is as nice and well behaved as she grows up. They both seem to be very close, just what you'd expect from mother and child I guess.

We met Polar, their... griffin? Lassa insists he's a dog, and I can see why.

Delphine had a paddle in the fountian. And so did Roo. Delphi didn't seem to really like Thylassa at first, but she seemed to warm up to her eventually. They have so much in common, loving water and all, that it would seem hard for them not to get along.

I almost had a heart attack when Delphine fell in the fountain.. twice!!! But she was alright. Although looking into swimming lessons for the both of us may be a good idea. I thought Gullien would berate me on being a bad mother but she just seemed amused and mentioned Thylassa being just as much a trouble maker. I guess it musn't be unsual for mishaps, being what they are, to get into all kinds of situations.

I hope we get to meet tham again oneday soon, I think Delphine was rather reluctant to leave at all. Although hopefully next time we can meet far away from any water.

I think I'd better go track down the laundry in the morning. Roo needs a spin through a dryer.

- Kay

She shut the journal, which gave a slight glow for just a moment and dropped it on the floor beside the sofa. With a yawn and a last check on Delphi, she curled up and drifted off to sleep.

((Delphine eats meets Rosalyn))

"Would you mind watching Delphine for me for a minute Rosa?" Kay asked plonking a slightly disgruntled Delphine into her playpen. "I kind of want to get lunch done in a hurry and it always takes forever when I've got Delphi in the highchair."

"Aye, the wee babe will be noo trrouble." The leprechaun replied jumping from her perch on Kay's shoulder to land perfectly on the edge of the playpen. "Will ye?" she said leaning over to stare down to a slightly surprised Delphine.

"Okay then?" Kay replied wondering for a minute if she could trust the two of them to stay out of trouble for a few minutes. "But don't get to close ok Rosa? I don't want you to get accidentally squished or anything."

The tiny being looked up huffily, "It'd take more than a wee babe to squish me! We leprechauns aren't like those dainty faeries ye ken!"

Kay just rolled her eyes at the leprechaun, waved bye to Delphi and strolled off into the kitchen, arms loaded with grocery bags.

Mishap and leprechaun eyed one another suspiciously.

Delphi broke eye contact first. With a disdainful swish of her tail and a blink of her large yellow eyes she pulled Roo towards her and curled up on her dolphin blanket, ignoring the 6 inch high figure perched on the edge of her playpen.

Rosa seemingly deciding that Delphine was going to behave herself sat down on the edge of the playpen with her back to the Mishap and started humming a rollicking tune to herself.

All was quiet and calm for at least one minute.

Kay paused for a moment in the kitchen a half-buttered piece of bread resting in her hand. It was quiet she decided; too quiet. Praying that the pair were actually behaving themselves for once, she placed the bread back on the bench, dusted her hands off on her right pink apron and peeked around the corner into the living room.

Delphine was sitting gleefully in her playpen, with what Kay immediately assumed could only be an extremely irate leprechaun half in her mouth, tiny legs kicking furiously.

Before she could even shout or burst into hysterics however, the leprechaun wiggled herself free and emerged with a pop from Delphine?s mouth.

Latching onto Delphi's 'mane' she glared up at the mishap. "Ach what ye be doing that for ye wee daftie" Leprechauns aren't for eating ye ken!? She growled and tapped her sharply on her kitty nose; while Kay looking on gasped expecting an immediate fountain of tears from Delphine at this brusque treatment.

Delphine shut her eyes, screwed her nose up - and erupted into a fit of giggles. "Osa!" She laughed and held her tiny hands out for the even tinier leprechaun to stand on.

Kay sighed and slumped against the wall.

Rosa noticing they had an audience looked up at Delphi's guardian; "See noo trouble at all!" She grinned and winked a tiny eye.

"Right?" Kay trailed off just glad that the pair of them were ok. "But that's the last time I leave you to babysit!" She and walked towards the playpen to remove Delphine and put her in the highchair instead.

"Dinnae ye smell that?" The Leprechaun said taking big sniffs of the air, before Kay even made it halfway across the room.

The guardian paused and sniffed at the air. "Argh! The bacon! Watch Delphi for me!" She shouted before making a mad dash to the kitchen.

Mishap and Leprechaun eyed each other warily....

((this is made assuming to be after they all met in the ballroom :3))

Retta toddled towards Delphine's room, even though she wasn't certain of her thoughts concerning the younger Mishap she might as well accomplish her task. In her arms was a small, brown paper bag with a note attatched. It was written in formal cursive, obviously Haze had written it for her. But the Mishap had helped in the message. She deposited the bag at the door and left, certain that Delphine or Kay would eventually discover it.

The Note
Greetings and Salutations!

Retta seemed to have learned a particular craft of her own. And while it is not as complex as this Origami you spoke of when we met, I assure you it is still quite lovely given how young and inexperienced Retta is. We both hope you and your charge find the small token agreeable.

Sincerely,
Haze and Retta

And inside the bag was a little sheep plush.

((Retta's Gift))

It was early in the morning and Kay and Delphine were yet again lying around in the livingroom investigating what games Delphine liked to play best. Roo was sitting off to one side, one of his eyes missing and a seam stitched up with bright orange thread. Being Delphine's favourite toy meant he had gotten dragged along to all sorts of places and ended up in all sorts of sitations, leaving him a little worse for wear.

Delphine scrunched up her nose and threw a building block irritably to one side. She turned to Kay who was arm deep in the toy box and gave an annoyed whine.

"I don't know either Delphi." Kay sighed throwing a blue bouncy ball out of the way, it bounced across the room and almost hit Rosa who was sleeping on the arm of the couch.

"Ach watch what yer doing ye daftie!" the leprechaun shook a fist in annoyance and curled up again.

"Sorry Rosa." Kay whispered with a grin and turned back to Delphine. "Well I don't know, maybe you left it by the fountain?" She extracted herself from the toybox and stood up. "Rosa watch Delphi for a sec ok?"

"Mmnph"

Not waiting for a more understandable answer Kay went and hurried out the door, only to stop herself just in time from tripping over a parcel. "What the..?" She bent down and picked it up. Kicking the door shut with one foot she scurried back over to Delphi and dropped to the floor beside her.
"Forget the rattle Delphi, look you've got a present!"

Delphine cocked her head to one side as her mother read out the note. Her ears pricked as she heard Retta's name. Was it from her? She reached out to poke the package dubiously. Well it didn't look very exciting. What were you supposed to do with it?

"I wonder what it is?" Kay opened the package carefully, "Whatever it is 'Retta made it all by herself, isn't that wonderful Delphi??" She pulled the sheep plushie from the paper.

Delphine's eye lit up, a toy! Now that was more like it! She reached out with grabby hands and took it from Kay.

"Look, it's even got little stripes like you! How neat!" Well whatever Kay thought of Haze, it did look like she was doing quite a fine job of raising the sheep mishap.

((Thoughts on Shane and Pyren))

Later that day after their unexpected guests had left, Kay and Delphine were sprawled out in their habitatual places in the livingroom. Delphine sitting back against a beanbag was happily slurping up a small bowl of tuna flakes. Thankfully Kay had remembered to put her bib on this time, saving Delphine's already dirty dress from some of the mess.

This fish-kitty mishap smiled happily around a fistful of tuna. She had rather enjoyed her morning thusfar. She'd met someone new who was nice to her and fun to play with, and she'd got to eat her favourite food. What could be better? She picked up the last few pieces of tuna in a grotty hand and eyed the empty bowl; well a refill wouldn't hurt.

Kay reached out and grabbed her diary off the table, giving a rueful smile at Delphine licking the bowl clean. With a contented sigh, she snuggld back into the lounge and began to write.

Journal Entry

Dear Diary;
Met yet another guardian today and once again unexpectedly.
He was nice enough, but I'm sure I messed things up. I'm quite out of practice with all this casual conversation and stuff.

Perhaps Rosa is right Delphi and I need to get out more often. I can only hope that my social awkwardsness doesn't rub off on Delphine, although it doesn't appear to be so far.

She got along with rather well with Pyren today, which I found a bit suprising, usually she can get up quite a temper if things don't go her way - something I think I shall have to remedy before she gets much older.
Although it did help that Pyren is an absolute sweetheart.

And I must admit I felt rather relieved to hear that I'm not the only one who has met with some misadventures in this new world of parenting.

((The Eggs Hatch))

Sunlight slowly began to shine through the apartment's enchanted kitchen window one early Saturday morning. Kay was snoring away in her bed after an exhausing evening the day before, trying to get Delphine to try some new foods at dinnertime. The fussy mishap was curled up in her cot, long legs curled tightly about her precious Roo, almost as tired out from her strenuous protests about her dislike of broccoli from the day before.

The sunlight slowly made its way across the kitchen bench and lit up the basket of special easter eggs that had been sitting there, almost forgotten about, for weeks. As they warmed up slightly from the light from the enchanted window, a rattle eminated from the wicker basket.

First one egg shook slightly, and than another until the whole basket vibrated and the rattling sounds got louder. The shaking began to increase and move the basket about until with a thud and multiple cracks, the basket rattled off the table and onto the hard tiled floor.

A few minutes later the peace of the household was disturbed by a loud "Wraaaawk!!" and a shrill "Meep meeeeeep!!"

Kay stumbled out into the kitchen half asleep with a wailing Delphine in her arms.

"....."

"Ishy?"

"Rosa! Why is there a lizard chicken and a purple rodent in my kitchen!?!"

With a flick of the wrist, a sealed envelope was slid under the front door. It skidded across the ground before halting. On its face was scrawled "To See and Delphine" in indigo colored, spidery-like script.

Dear Seer and Delphine,
Well! It’s been highly noted that Delphine is quite the little water baby and enjoys using webbed fingers to make those awesome splashes… even if they are in the fountain and not in the pool and result in sopping wet carpeting. We’ve also noticed that she’s quite the little attention lover and grabber, especially with those many frills… But what do you do when you noticed more appearing? It seems things are growing from those spikes on her arms, which are also becoming harder, and another frill is emerging on each side of her head just below the first two. These are causing Delphine much discomfort and as her guardian, it’s up to you to make it as painless as possible. Good luck!
