Bonded Solo The Feathered Hatchling
Mae sighed as he walked the long trail home from school; the same path he took everyday. Usually, his journey was quiet except for the rustling of wind, the chirping of birds, and the sound of his own footsteps. But ever since a heavy package had arrived at his doorstep, the trek had become a tad more bearable, even if the weight he'd carried had become much heavier. Usually, it was only has backpack and a few books, but since then he'd also had to tote the equivalent of a large watermelon around.
Naturally, the thing had been impossible to hide from his classmates, and Mae had instantly found himself swamped with kids curious of its origin. He'd reveled in the attention eagerly, proudly showing off the glistening blue egg, while still being incredibly possessive and weary of anyone touching it. He knew he had to carry it with him. He just wished the walk home wasn't so long... He occupied himself by carrying the egg in his arms and talking to it. Mothers talked to their babies while they were still in the womb, so why shouldn't Maeron try to enrich this little one's life before it hatched.
"I feel like you're getting heavier the more I carry you around." The boy told the egg as the started heading into the tree cover. Mae was always thankful for the shade to keep him out of the sun. "But really, you should be getting lighter. It's weird, isn't it? You'd think that something growing in there would make you heavier, but this shell is actually permeable, so water can evaporate and..." It usually went on like that for the duration of the walk; Mae imparting random wisdom on the little unborn soul in the hopes that it too would have a love for knowledge.
Today was different. As Mae ran his hands over the egg during his speech, he paused, feeling a rough, scraping edge that had never been present along the smooth, glassy surface. At first, fear lanced through him. He'd been as careful as he possibly could! And the egg seemed sturdy enough to be able to handle usual wear-and-tear, so how could he have possibly cracked it? The Orderite ran his fingers along the seam and felt a tiny, almost unnoticeable shift. And then he was sprinting. Sprinting down the path while clutching the little egg against his chest for all he was worth. He'd really wanted to be at his home when the little creature inside burst free of its confines, so that it would recognize his house as a safe, secure place.
He was gasping and heaving by the time he made it through the doors, and his legs burned from the run. Of course, none of that mattered one wit. He grabbed a few towels from the cabinet. He'd heard the birthing process was messy, so maybe the hatching part was too... Another jolt came from the egg, like it was trying to bounce from his arms. Maeron lay one of the towels across the floor, using a second to make a makeshift nest to hold the egg, while keeping a third on-hand for cleanup. The egg twitched and made the little crack open wider. Mae could hear soft peeps and chirps before he could even identify the Drakein inside.
The sky-colored Keinling burst from the egg and toppled across the floor, leaving a slick, oozy trail behind him. It ruffled its grime-covered wings, shaking its head softly. Then its large blue eyes wandered up to find Mae's own widened teal orbs. The little creature let out a soft peep as it tried to find its footing in the slick mess. Maeron was briefly stunned still. As the Keinling fumbled, Mae reached for the towel he'd prepared, drying the little one off and wiping some of the mess away. When it was wet, it looked slick and shiny, but as the boy's fingers came into contact with that blue surface, he felt only softness. Not skin, but... feathers...? Maeron's breath caught as that little head rubbed against his hand, still damp from only seconds before.
It released another chirp as Mae's fingers traveled through those soft feathers to run right under its chin. "You aren't really what I was expecting." The boy admitted. "I thought you'd look a little more... dragon-y. I had a cool name picked out and everything." He chuckled lamely. "I was gonna name you Darke Star or Darke Fire. Something like that. But you're a little... light-colored for something like that..." The Keinling let out a peep that Mae would classify as indignant. "You like more like an early-morning snow day. All... Frosty and such. Darke doesn't really fit you, but I spent a lot of time coming up with that, so it seems a shame to change it now. Well, you can be Darke Frost. That's still pretty cool." Weapon Solo Warrior Spirit
Despite the side-venture of showing Darke around, Mae had an actual reason for coming into the city today, as much as he loathed it. He was planning on asking Sam, a visiting Drakein, to take him and Darke back to Eowyn with him. Sam seemed like the kind of fellow that Mae could beg to and be able to get what he wanted, so he wasn't concerned the Drakein would deny him. However, he did need to prepare. Eowyn was a large continent. Somewhere that Mae had only read about and never actually ventured to. There was no telling all the things that would actually transpire there.
As such, he needed a weapon. Not just any weapon, his weapon. The only problem was that it required a trip to meet with Aevah Avi, a woman Mae didn't trust as far as he could throw her. She was supposed to be the voice of Seren, his goddess, but Mae felt that the gods had given up their war, and that Aevah had simply neglected to tell the Orderites. How was he supposed to trust someone who wanted her people at war?
But there was nothing that could be done for it. Mae simply had to allow her to do as she pleased, because he knew that no one in this city would side with him if he mentioned such a thing. Maybe some Oblivionite or Dovaa would, but Maeron didn't trust them, either. He could only sigh as he approached the Citadel's doors, with Darke in tow, of course. The young Alikein was back in his arms, though the earlier excitement had worm him out, and he was no nestling contently against Mae's chest. His sky-colored eyes were half-lidded, barely paying attention, but too curious to fall asleep.
Mae couldn't blame him. The Citadel could be quite a lovely piece of work, if it weren't for the woman that lived here. Still, Mae knew where to go. He walked up the stairs and through an archway leading to Aevah's office. Before he even had the chance to knock on her door, there was a melodious, "Enter." Rolling his eyes, Mae did as instructed. "Hello, Maeron." the woman greeted politely, fingers clasped gracefully atop her desk. Her gaze traveled questioningly to the young AKikein in his arms. "And who is this?"
The Orderite hardly wanted to waste pleasantries on her, but since she would hopefully give him his weapon, he supposed he could at least try. "Good afternoon." He greeted cordially. He glanced down to Darke, who was hardly more than a limp, sleeping bundle of feathers now. "This is Darke, and we're going on a voyage with a friend of mine, so I've come to receive my weapon." He announced.
The lovely lady swept from her desk, striding around it to stand before him. "Ah, yes. It is about time for you, isn't it, Mae?" She asked, smiling softly at him. He gave a clipped nod in response and no more. "Very well." She moved gracefully across the room to another table, where she arranged for rather plain-looking weapons to select from: a bow, a mace, a sword, and a wand. Once she was satisfied with the set-up, she beckoned him over. Mae followed her instructions, coming to a stop before the table. "Choose whichever speaks the loudest to you. Feel free to touch them, if you wish. Sometimes, Apprentices find that it helps." She told him with a smile.
Mae nodded and inspected his choices. he ruled out archer instantly. He wanted to be in the heat of the battle, not shooting from the sidelines! If that was the case, he should probably rule out mage too, though he had considered it at one point, since he deemed himself smart enough to wield magic. Oh, well. That left only the mace and the sword. Mae couldn't help but grin at the mace. In one of his fights, he'd bludgeoned a Dragon to death with a stick. A mace seemed pretty similar. But as he remembered how uncivilized it all had seemed, he shook his head.
That left only one choice: the blade. If he wanted civilized close-combat, there was nothing but the sword for him. It would require more practice and finesse than the mace, but Mae was willing to go for it. Mae set Darke down on the table so he could pick up the weapon. The Alikein stirred slightly, raising his head to watch Mae. As the young Orderite accepted his fate, a white light flashed, making him close his eyes against the brightness of it. But as it faded, Mae was left with his perfect weapon in his hand. The blade was long and thin, with a hinge near the center. When straightened out as it was, it bore a stunning resemblance to a katana. A long, dark purple ribbon protruded from the base of the hilt. Mae twisted the hilt around in his hands before giving the weapon a test slash. The blade snapped closed, leaving both sides of the metal bladed and sharp. The lad toyed with the hinge in amusement, finding that swinging in a certain motion would actually lock the blade into an assortment of different positions. "I like it." He finally announced proudly.
Aevah only chuckled smoothly at the admission. "Of course you do." She told him. "It suits you very well." Despite his distaste for her, Mae couldn't help but smile at the comment.
"Thank you." Mae said, turning and giving a tiny bow. He collected Darke from the table and headed to the door, strapping his new weapon across his back.
"You're very welcome." Aevah replied. "May Seren bless you and keep you safe on your journey."
Maeron nodded and headed out of the Citadel. Somehow, with Darke in his arms and his weapon on his back, he felt older, more prepared to take Eowyn on. There was no way Sam could say no to him now! Results: Obtained the Warrior's weapon: Mae's Slingblade! Words: 997

Orb Solo Dancing with Destiny
Mae was nervous the entire ferry-ride back to Serenia. Since they were stowaways, both he and Darke needed to keep out of sight. With the Keindred as big as he was, plus his stand-out colors, it wasn't easy. The Orderite was in a tizzy for most of the journey. They tucked away with the cargo, but every so often, Mae would hear footsteps, and he'd still his breath and cling to Darke to keep him from straying. Who knew what would happen to them if they were discovered...? Out here in the middle of the ocean, nothing good, he was sure.
But, despite the mental strain, they made it to port without incident. When the sounds of several people shuffling down the stairs to start moving cargo, Mae and Darke slipped off to the side, waiting for the entrance to be free so they could make their escape. They'd come this far! It almost didn't matter if they were captured now! Once he thought everyone was distracted with their boxes, the two boys bustled out the door, up the stairs and across the deck. They'd nearly made it to the entrance ramp when he heard someone shout, "Hey! What's a kid doin' 'ere?!"
Mae didn't want to wait and see who had spotted him or if he was being followed. Keeping a hand on Darke's neck to make sure his Keindred was following him, the two darted off the boat and into the crowd. The sun was low in the sky, and there were people mingling about on the streets. Mae weaved through them, occasionally calling out a "Sorry!" over his shoulder as he bumped into someone with a particularly high amount of force. But that wasn't to stop him. He had no way of knowing if he was being tailed, and as much as he hated to admit it, the only refuge would be once he made it to Aevah.
Though the time was shorter while running, the distance felt longer. Mae's lungs were burning by the time he reached the Citadel's doors. He could only imagine how his younger companion was feeling. Although, it might not have been as bad for Darke in hindsight. At least the Alikein had four legs to run with. The two didn't pause until they had thrown open the doors to Aevah's study.
The woman started at the sudden intrusion, but gave them a shaky smile all the same. "The hero returns from his voyage." She told Me softly, smiling as the boy doubled over to catch his breath, panting heavily. Darke slipped into the room and plopped down onto his belly, not sounding quite as harsh as Mae, though still clearly under the effects of the long run. "What brings you two to me in such a rush, young ones?" The Orderite woman asked pleasantly, rising from her desk to greet them.
Mae was still in the midst of catching his breath, so he ignored her for the time being. The woman needed to learn patience. They all didn't run on her schedule! But when he'd recovered enough to at least have dignified speech, Mae righted himself and replied, "I've come to give you a few of my treasures." He told her, reaching into his pack to pull out two orange orbs. He hated to admit that he wasn't sure what would become of his hard-earned treasures, but since all the Warrior Orderites spoke of bringing them to her, Mae figured he should do the same.
She reached out to gingerly take the two orbs from him, her soft hands lightly brushing his as she accepted them. "These are lovely, Maeron." She replied, smiling softly down at him as she looked the orange treasures over. She reached out to pat his head, making Mae scowl darkly. Aevah didn't seem particularly offended. "I'll tuck them away for later." She promised, moving off to stow the orbs neatly away. "Do you need anything else, little one?" She asked in her melodious voice.
Part of Mae wanted to say yes and learn more about the orbs, but a quick glance over his shoulder told him that Darke wanted to leave as soon as possible. There wasn't time for a long, detailed discussion about the orbs and their magical properties. Besides, Aevah would probably lie to him, anyway. So he shook his head. "That's all."
Aevah Avi nodded in understanding as she walked back to her desk. "Very well. I hope to see more from you soon, Maeron."
The boy scoffed. He wanted to spend as little time with this deceitful woman as possible. Beckoning to Darke, the two headed out. It was still a long walk back to the cabin, but the comforts of their own home awaited them once they finally made it! Mae was more eager about an actual bed and real cooking utensils than anything else. He never realized how much he cherished those simple things until he spent a few moons away from them... Learning Solo Power of the Aiskala
Now that they'd returned home, Mae found that he actually missed the dangerous and unpredictable life they'd led while on Eowyn. Serenia simply seemed...boring now. He craved the action and adventure he'd experienced while away from home! But there simply wasn't that kind of excitement to be had here... The pair had grown strong enough that facing the Yaslis that inhabited their home was hardly a challenge, but were still too weak to combat the Peisios that made their den near the lake. They were at a bit of an impasse.
Today, Mae was brooding a bit, and Darke was feeding off of it, meaning the two of them were laying about the house festering and feeling sorry for themselves. While the Orderite used to love flipping through his books and reading his tales, he was ready to do these types of things for himself! His fingers danced aimlessly across the bookshelves, knowing there was nothing he hadn't already read.
With a sigh, he turned to his feathered companion, who was laying belly-down across the floor. Darke's sky blue orbs wandered over to him, and he huffed irritably. Maeron sent the Keindred a wry smile. "Let's see if there's anything going on outside today." He suggested smoothly. Judging from his companion's expression, Darke could use a bit of fresh air.
The Alikein rose slowly, tail dusting against the ground. "Fine..." Darke grumbled unenthusiastically, plodding over to Mae's side as the purple-headed Orderite opened the door to lead them out.
The air was painfully warm and humid, an awful combination, especially for a young Keindred who was born to be in the snow. Darke groaned loudly the instant they stepped out onto the threshold, turning his pleading gaze back up to his partner. "Maaaae, noooo." He begged. When the Orderite only ventured farther from the house, Darke rolled his eyes and followed. Darke clouds hung overhead today, and there was a very real chance of rain.
"I know." Mae decided. "We can go to the library and find a book on Aiskalas." Darke's interest peaked at this, and there was no more arguing on the trip to the library. Mae even managed to find a selection on Drakeins in general, as well as two books on Aiskala dragons. With the books in hand, the pair returned home, though Mae insisted they sit outside, much to Darke's chagrin.
The duo sat on the porch, with Mae perched on the edge of the stairs, one of the books open in his lap. Darke was just as curious, and read quite literally over his Bonded's shoulder. With his two front paws on either of his companion's shoulders, he could peek over his head and just barely make out some words.
"These dragons can actually create full-scale blizzards..." Mae muttered, flipping through the pages. Darke certainly couldn't do that yet... He could make tiny ice clods and a small track for Mae to skate on, but certainly never a blizzard. "That's pretty amazing, actually."
Darke ruffled his feathers indignantly. "I bet it isn't hard." He scoffed, hoping from Mae's shoulders and bounding out into the large, tree-filled yard. he opened his maw and let out an angry growl. A gust of wind escaped his lips, accented by tint crystals.
Mae only chuckled and shook his head. "A blizzard is when the whole area does that. You'll be out of breath if you try and cover the whole area!" he flipped through his book a bit. "You have to reach deeper for your magic. It's supposed to tire you out."
Darke shrugged and grumbled. Wind wasn't even his element! And wind was a huge piece of a blizzard! How was he supposed to control something that wasn't his? He sat back on his haunches and closed his eyes. Mae said he needed to reach for his magic... Really, he wondered what the Orderite knew of magic. All he did was swing his slingblade about. Darke groaned and shook his head to clear the distracting thoughts. He needed to focus on his powers! If he closed his eyes and looked within himself, he could feel a shimmering thread. When he plucked at it, he could create the icy tracks Mae used to skate on, or shoot frozen crystals from his mouth. But not create a blizzard.
Darke snorted and let his mind wander over the threads of his magic. Just a thread wasn't enough for a blizzard... He pulled on it, then opened his eyes and released- a harsh jet of crisp, cold air, dotted with snow, but still no blizzard. he went back to the threads repeatedly, yanking on it and forcing the power to come to him. He tried throughout the day while Mae looked on, but no matter how he tried, the slim tendril wasn't enough power to create the blizzards Mae had mentioned.
"I can't, Mae..." Darke said softly, apologetically.
The Orderite nodded in understanding, looking down at his own hands. He and Darke were Bonded, but still Mae never felt him sapping strength from him. He could see Darke's image of the threads. Since the Orderite also had magic, he should have them as well... "Use my powers too, Darke." Mae said, looking up to his companion. "We are Bonded. You can tap into my magic as well."
Darke looked speculatively at him. He'd never seen Mae's magic... But he shrugged and nodded. If it didn't work, it didn't work. He closed his eyes again, finding his own tendrils of power. But they were not what he was after this time. Instead, he sought out the power that connected them and created the Bond. He followed his threads down to that wellspring of power, finding that his entwined closely with Bonded's at the source. He touched it. This power was harder to control, but when his eyes opened and he focused his mind of wielding this power, a gust came from behind him, followed by a snowy splattering. It still wasn't a full-scale blizzard, but it was a start. He'd just have to keep it up longer...
But by now, the sky was darkening even further as the sun disappeared over the horizon, and as Darke stood, he found his legs quivering. He inhaled, and his chest hurt. "I'm tired, Mae." The Alikein muttered. As he sauntered back to his companion, his stomach let out a disgruntled roar. "And hungry. Make me some warm soup!" Results: Learned more powerful frozen magics! Words: 1074

Learning Solo The Gift of Flight!Darke continued to practice his magic everyday. It seemed that was probably the high-point in the boys' lives right now, since Serenia offered them so little else. But as Mae continued to observe and direct, he couldn't help but notice that something else was missing... Darke still hadn't learned to fly. Mae wasn't even sure if he was particularly interested in such a thing. But surely, since he was an Alikein, he'd be eager to fly with his own power...
They were outside again, with a pleasant wind whipping through to keep them cool beneath the warm Serenian sun. Darke was tromping through a puddle left behind from the recent rain while Mae looked on, lost in his thoughts. "You're getting kinda big, y'know." Mae grumbled, watching his companion.
Darke perked and turned to look at him. "Yeah, what of it?"
"It's just... Your wings... I bet they're strong enough to carry you now." Mae told him, tipping his head curiously. "Why don't we just give it a shot. Here, climb up in this tree!" Mae ordered, getting up and running over to the specified location. The trunk was thick, with a few strong mid-hanging branches Darke could leap from.
The Alikein rolled his eyes. He didn't want to try and fly! What if he failed...? And Mae laughed at him...? But he sauntered over to the tree anyway, digging his claws into the bark to haul himself up onto a branch. "No need to be bossy..." He muttered, scowling down at the purple-haired boy.
"Well, jump." Mae ordered, backing up and spreading his arms. "I'll catch you if you fall!"
Was that supposed to be reassuring?! Darke scowled down at him. "Don't be ridiculous! I'm too big for you to catch!"
"Then you better beat your little wings and fly!" The Orderite grinned, stepping forward right into the space Darke would fall into, if he should fail.
The feathered Keindred bounced as much as he could while perched on his branch. "This is crazy!" Mae only beckoned him down, still grinning. Growling, Darke spread his wings and jumped. He fanned them, gliding downward slowly, like he knew he could do. When Mae started flapping his arms like an idiot, Darke smirked and slowly beat his wings. And suddenly, he wasn't falling anymore, he was scaling upward. He flapped a little more fiercely to gain speed. he could hear Mae cheering eagerly below him.
It was still a bit tiring, but enjoyable, at least. Once he couldn't flap any longer, he glided down, landing a bit clumsily at Mae's feet. "I knew you could do it." The boy grinned.
