They were alone again. Just the two of them sitting at home doing nothing. "I could make lunch?" Mae offered, staring up at the ceiling with his arms crossed behind his head. By his calculations there were approximately one million three-hundred and ninety-five thousand four-hundred and twenty-eight specks of paint on the ceiling. In the entirety of his house.
Darke groaned pitifully, rolling from Mae's side and onto his belly. "We just ate breakfast an hour ago! Are you trying to fatten me up and eat me?!" The Alihora demanded. What was worse was that he genuinely sounded frustrated. His voice wasn't even teasing.
Mae sat up sharply, his teal orbs wide and surprised. "Has it really only been an hour?" He questioned, clearly aghast.
"It's only been an hour."
The two sighed simultaneously in dejection. After so much time on this pitifully mundane continent, you'd think they'd know what to do with themselves on days like today. Alas, no matter what they came up with, nothing seemed... exciting enough. The Orderite boy thumped his head on the wooden floor as he flopped back down. He wished he had some Orderite friends that actually lived close by. Instead, all he had was the Gaili Khehorian, Samael, and the bandaged boy who lived on Eowyn. And Darke, of course, but Mae hardly considered the Alihora a separate entity than himself.
Suddenly, his feathered friend rose to his feet, giving himself a shake to rid himself of the dust he'd collected over the past hour. "I guess I'll go for a walk." He announced, padding along toward the front door. Yes, it required energy, but it was still better than sitting about waiting for something exciting to happen! "Are you coming, or what?" He asked, giving Mae's nose a flick with his feathered tail. Through the Bond, he could sense Mae's hesitance. He didn't want to stay at home, but he was also feeling... slothish.
But finally, the boy rolled to his feet with a nod. "Yeah, I guess." He agreed with a shrug. If Darke left, he really would be here alone... Ugh, and that sucked. Mae collected his weapon, dawned his scarf and slipped into his overcoat. The winter chill was crisp at this time of day, even with the slight immunity to the cold that the bond with Darke, an Aiskala, offered him. "Well, come on then." Mae snorted with a roll of his eyes, strolling out onto the porch with Darke just behind him.
As the chill wind hit their faces, Darke squinted off into the distance. "Have you ever seen snow, Mae?" The two started off into the treeline.
"What? Of course I have. You make snow all the time." Mae reminded him.
The Aiskala groaned in annoyance. "No, the real stuff! That comes from the sky and the gods! Not the magic kind! Y'know, the kind that blankets whole continents and makes it so the two-leggers can't leave their houses." He could tell Mae was putting some thought into it, sifting through the times when Darke had made snow for him and the times when it could have been real.
But finally, Mae shook his head. "I don't guess so." He admitted. "I can't remember a time when I had snow without you. So if I'd seen it, surely you would have too."
Darke sighed. That's what he'd been afraid of... It was kinda disappointing, to think that Mae's Serenian home hadn't seen real, god-given snow since Darke had hatched. At least, not where his boy lived, anyway. the Alihora's tail flicked, and a sly smile crept across his maw. Excitement radiated through the bond. "Mae, I've got it! Our adventure can be: to find the Snow!" As Darke proclaimed this, a scuffling could be heard in the trees to the side.
The two froze like deer staring into headlights as a large, furry, broad creature lumbered forward. 'What is it?' Darke hissed through the Bond.
'It's... A baowi, I think...' Mae responded in like, reaching for his slingblade across his back. 'They're pack animals, as far as I know... there might be more.'
The creature stared at them through its tiny black eyes before it let out a howl and rampaged forward. Mae instantly tossed himself at Darke, grabbing onto the Alihora just as he took flight. he slung his weapon down, cutting deep into the animal's back until he felt his blade dig into bone. The baowi roared and thrashed before falling limply to the ground.
Darke fluttered down slowly, touching the ground just as Mae dismounted. The boy walked over to the fuzzy remains to curiously inspect the body. It didn't dissolve like dragons did... Then, a commotion clambering through the trees, toward the dying call of the beast. Two more baowi burst onto the scene, snarling wildly. Mae didn't have the time to hop aboard Darke again, and instead, the two were easily separated by the monstrous animals charging at them. One dove toward the smaller boy. Mae thought he was prepared. He hefted his blade, then took a step back to prepare himself...
And fell. Even as he went down, he saw the creature lunge for him with fangs bared. Until a sky-colored body smashed into it, sinking his pointed teeth deep into the fur and shaking it until he felt no more resistance. By the time Darke was through, the other baowi was crashing into him, pinning the Alihora beneath its heavier weight. So Mae dove, kicking off the ground for all he was worth and slinging his blade down hard into the beast's neck, cutting through tendon and sinew and nearly decapitating the poor thing.
When all was said and down, Darke rose to his feet, shaking droplets of blood from is downy feathers, where Mae's assault had splattered him. "I think you owe it to me now, to find the snow." He informed the boy.
