In his effort to show his new little hatchling all he possibly could, Mae had decided to take Darke into the depths of the city, carrying his little one tucked into his backpack, like he usually did. Sam had offered to take him on a hunt for food, but Mae found that he didn't want to leave his Keinling alone with the Gaili Drakein... Of course, Darke was starting to get a little too big for those confines, even with his head peeking out curiously, and it didn't take the Alkein long before he started squirming uncomfortably, desperate for a little bit more freedom. Mae knew the zipper wouldn't hold him for long, and he probably wouldn't get the flightless babe back in the bag if he took him out. But the desperate peeps and calls were starting to attract an uncanny amount of attention, and the purple-haired Orderite was pretty sure he'd start hearing whispers about what a terrible guardian he was...

Groaning softly, the boy settled at a little round table outside one of the shops. He set the backpack down in front of him. Knowing he had Mae's attention, Darke started chattering angrily, using his sharpened teeth to tug and n** at his confines. "Alright, alright!" Maeron huffed, unzipping the bag grudgingly. the Alkein squirmed until it was free, tumbling from the backpack and out onto the table with a grunt. It sent an accusing glare toward its partner and fluttered its flightless wings angrily at him.

It was Maslin's first time entering the Ashen city and the man was more than a little nervous. There were whispers and strange looks everywhere he went.It was only the medallion around his neck, that spoke of his supposed heroism that had granted him access to this place. He was safe enough out in the open but, from violence anyways but the boon did little to stop people from talking and speculating about him. As a hybrid Maslin had no doubt that he would always be an outcast.

Lazuli offered his bonded a reassuring whistle as he walked beside him. Full grown now the peisio drakein was quite large and while he retained the playful and cheerful nature of his youth he would let no harm come to Maslin. Fortunately most just seemed content to move away from the pair and offer dirty looks if they were mean. Lazuli paid no mind to them as there were friendly smiles too and the odd person who wanted to meet heroes such as they. It was a shame that Maslin was so curt with them, still wary of contact with other people.

The last person I did a commission for tried to cheat me Laz, people are terrible and it's hard to tell by looking at them.
It had not been due to his heritage either, Maslin had come to learn that the man who'd sought his services a few weeks back was a known skinflint who had tried to weasel his way out of deals or renegotiate when things were done to many other locals of the village his family had been passing through.

People in general were regular disappointments to Maslin and he was happy to keep his list of companions outside of his family small.

Darke prattled at Mae, hopping around on the table and fluttering his wings to show his discontentment. The Orderite only grinned in amusement. Darke then turned to survey his surroundings. It wasn't easy to see everything from the backpack, but from here. He stepped forward. Maeron nearly had an aneurism as one of Darke's forepaws slipped off the table and he tumbled to the ground below, letting out a harsh screech as he fell. He landed with a thump. Heart racing, Mae ducked under the table to retrieve him, but the fall had done little to deter the Alkein from his explorations. Shaking his feathered tail in Mae's direction, he darted off, leaving a stunned Orderite in his wake. "Darke, wait!" Mae shouted, shoving his way into the throng of people. Darke was so little! There was no way he wouldn't get stepped on, kicked, or smashed. Mae could just barely see that feathered backside as it weaved over feet and behind legs.

And then, suddenly, he popped out into the open. Darke froze, letting his gaze travel up a pair of blue forelegs and landing on the muzzle of another Drakein. He peeped quietly, puffing his chest and ruffling his wings to make himself appear larger. Mae darted out to snag him, scooping the youngster up in his arms and completely ruining the facade before realizing what Darke was staring at. "S-sorry." Mae muttered, his wide teal orbs locked on the horns on the man's head.

Ohh another bonded drakein like himself! Lazuli was pleased to see the cheery, feathery young one. Ignoring the Alkeins bonded his stretched his neck out until this they were nose to nose "Hello opal." His kin's colouring reminded him of the pretty stone and while they likely had a different name lazuli much preferred the one he had just given. They could be drakein named after stones together.

You're going to get bit one day doing that.
Maslin admonished the peisio Drakein through their mental bond. He knew Lazuli had no love for feral Drakein and adored other bonded but he had no concept of personal space at all.

Turning his attention to the contrite orderite boy in front of him Maslin offered a partial smile along with a shake of his head. " It's fine, young drakein are incorrigible." For the moment Maslin was tolerant of this stranger and his bonded but he was still wary of them. That the boy kept staring at him did little to help increase Maslin's opinion of him.

Mae gasped and pulled Darke away from the other Drakein. He didn't realize how hard he was fearfully squeezing his companion until Darke let out a startled squeak and started to squirm within his grasp, ruffling up his feathers against his Bonded's arms. "You have to be careful." Mae uttered, though judging by the way Darke shoved his claws against Maeron's chest, he didn't want anything to do with carefulness.

Despite the Orderite's best efforts, Darke managed to stretch himself out and give Lazuli a curious nose-bump before Mae backpedaled away. "Obviously." The boy scoffed in response to this stranger's statement. With a bit more space between them, and now that he wasn't trying to save Darke's life, Mae inspected the two newcomers before him. He was surprised at how long it took him to understand that they actually had something in common. He blinked at them. "You're bonded too... I'm Mae. This is Darke." He hefted the Keinling in his arms. Of course, just because he was willing to share their names didn't mean he trusted these people yet! His teal gaze was still suspiciously skeptical.

Yes! This keinling was friendly and perhaps wished to play with him. Lazuli dwarfed the youngster in size but he himself was still quite young at heart. " He is not dark , he is an opal." Lazuli firmly objected to such a mismatched name for a fellow drakein. Clearly his bonded didn't understand the important of proper names, which was such a shame. " I'm Lazuli, my bonded is Maslin, we are Peisio" he declared proudly.

It was also a shame that the little opal's bonded would never be anything nor have the chance to choose to be something. He would always just be an Orderite and that was saddening. Lazuli knew nice Orderites of course, the strong and wise Kadryn was one such being. Still, he sensed something lacking in her that ever her barbarian strength and strange bloodlust could not fill.

" We are heroes," Lazuli added for good measure. He could feel Maslin's uncertainty about the strangers. If he could win them over his bonded would feel more at ease.

Maslin just sighed softly and shot a semi annoyed look at the drakein, it really wasn't necessary for Laz to boast. He didn't want special treatment because of his medallion, he simply wanted a chance to explore a city that had always been off limits to him before.

Despite his best attempts to be friendly to a fellow bonded pair, Mae only felt his hackles rising the more the Drakein talked. Was he deaf or something?! Mae clearly said his companion's name was Darke, not Opal! He'd picked it out himself and was very proud of the name he chose. He couldn't help but be offended that anyone would try and use something different. "It's Darke." Mae hissed, teal orbs narrowing in agitation. Feeling his Bonded's frustration, Darke hunkered down deeper in Mae's grasp, hoping the snuggles would help soothe the boy.

Mae let his fingers travel across those soft feathers, letting the physical feeling of those soft strands calm him. He was also pretty sure Darke was inadvertently sending calming waves through the Bond. It was kind of cute. Darke was such a good companion. Mae hugged him tightly then gingerly set him back on the ground. "We've killed plenty of Peisios..." Mae muttered as he stood back up. They were Dragons, of course, but either way, he felt the need to say something that would kick Lazuli off his high horse. But the guy, Maslin, seemed more quiet. Mae could appreciate that. He turned his attention away from the Drakein and onto the hybrid. "What have you done that makes you a hero?" He questioned.

The look Lazuli sent Mae was one of loathing, any interest he had had in the boy and his bonded was now gone. Certainly he and Maslin had killed many things but they weren't proud of it and they were never proud to have killed any specific thing. It wouldn't surprise the Drakein at all if Mae actually was an egg thief.

You are right, people are terrible Normally Lazuli was cheerful and willing to try to get to know even the prickliest of people. In the face of such arrogance and casual dismissal of killing though the drakein was disturbed. These were not good people, not like Kadryn or Eanah. Mae was bad like the drakein that had long ago tried to kill his bonded.

I told you so, most are not worth bothering with. Maslin replied through the bond. He was far less bothered by the boys proclamation , having never held the sense of pride about such things as lazuli did. Still he respected his bonded's distress and somewhat agreed with his own disapproval of how pleased Mae seemed to be about his dragon killing prowess. Then again Maslin had never cared for the slaughter of dragons, these days it was something he did out of necessity, not to prove a point or stroke his own ego.

He had been asked a question though and since he was wearing the medallion Maslin felt obliged to answer. There were rumors of those who wore fake ones to access the cities and it was fair if irritating for some to suspect him of that.

"Lazuli and I were on Eowyn when Alpha and Beta appeared, we were healers in the Serenian camp."

"Our friend was stolen" Lazuli interjected, he hissed the words at the memory, he quite liked Erionda. She was a good person and also a hybrid.

Maslin nodded "We went with the rescue party to retrieve her after the sandstorm ended," though they had not known at the time it was Erionda who was captured.

Here Maslin gave a shudder. "For every rumor you have heard about what lay in those caves, what things the hybrid coalition was doing, it was worse." Perhaps it made him weak but on occasion the young man still had nightmares about what he saw there, the experiments all caged up, the blood of the dead scientists and then the fights themselves against Alpha and Beta.

Lazuli gave a low whistle of sadness and rubbed his head on Maslin's shoulder. "Too many died, too many of everyone." So much pain was found in those caves. So many on all sides had lost their lives over stupid ideas of race and gods and power.

Maslin sighed as he reached up to run his ringers over the medallion. "We did the right thing, we helped where we could and in return we got this." Maslin didn't care for the distinction of being a hero, access to the capital cities was enough for him. It was something that benefited him and his family far more than the fame. Travel and trade was easier for them now which meant Maslin spent less time worrying and more time honing his craft.

Maeron frowned when he was told of their adventure. All it took was being a healer to be labeled a hero? That would never have been enough for Mae! I mean, it was useful, sure, but the Orderite lad knew he would've felt irritated if all he could do was sit back and make people feel better while there was fighting to be had. Especially if one of his friends was involved. He sent his young companion a look of sadness. Of course, he supposed Darke was the only one he felt that way about...

"I guess that's good... If you're satisfied with what you've done." Mae said uncertainly, suddenly finding the long purple strands of his hair amusing. he wasn't amused with the way the pair of them sounded so self-righteous if all they did was heal. Of course, it would be a pair of healers that thought they 'did the right thing' by not battling. Maeron could only shake his head. The very notion had the Orderite pegging them as cowards, despite the harshness they spoke of.

((Blarg, sorry. I don't know much about the Beta/Alpha battle or I probably would've written more. XP))

(NP although Maslin and lazuli did actually fight during the Meta it's not like they clarified that. You can look up the past meta stuff though so mae has a stronger feeling about what happened overall).

Maslin narrowed his eyes at the dismissal of the orderite boy. Fellow bonded or not there was no point in trying to carry on a conversation with this one. It was disappointing that for once it was not his hybrid nature, obvious what with his wings out at the moment, that caused him trouble but the lofty expectations of some child. Maslin had never cared to conform to what others thought he needed to be and he wasn't about to start now. He knew what he and lazuli had seen and done on Eowyn and he was more than happy with that.

"It was , interesting meeting you," he replied coolly. "I have places to be now however." Wandering aside he did want to seek out the grand library that the Ashen city boasted. There were quite a few books and scrolls he should find useful there. Although Maslin wasn't positive they'd let lazuli in with him. With that said be began to stride away, mind immediately focused on finding a market stall that would sell him a map of the city.

I will lay outside and bask in the sun, talking to not terrible people.
Lazuli informed his bonded through the connection as he began to trot away from 'The boy' and his poorly named bonded.

(lol a short rp but Maslin and Laz are in no mood to attempt further socialization with your boys. It was nice rping with you.)

Mae was almost relieved when the strange Hybrid took his bonded and departed. He couldn't say he was impressed with them, though at least they weren't hostile (in a crowd, anyway). He was sensing what almost felt like disappointment from his young Keinling, though. Darke had been so excited to see another of his kind up close, but oh well. It wasn't as if Mae wouldn't be sure to show him more! Maybe the other Drakeins wouldn't be so... snooty, though...

Either way, Mae collected his Keinling from the ground. He actually had come into this city with a purpose, as grudging as it was... It was time he met with Aevah. He was finally old enough to receive a weapon! Once he held some form of defense in his grasp, he'd be able to go on many more adventures! He'd show Maslin what being a hero was really about...

((Sure~ Mae is going to be a bit more understanding/docile in his later stages, so maybe the next time they meet it won't be such a bad thing. XD))
