Solo: Hell Is A World Where I Cannot Eat

Vollerei woke up to the chirping and buzzing of large insects that bumbled about outside her quickly made shelter. It’d been a week since she’d been washed out to sea and landed here on this land, familiar yet strange. The plants looked mostly familiar to her home’s jungle’s... but she could also see new and different plant life every now and then. She could also see that the animals here were very similar to her home too; mostly insects with tiny mammals, but again every now and then she caught a glimpse of a creature she’d never seen before. Perhaps they lived on Chibale Island too just not near her home. Vollerei would have loved to gone exploring and tasting all the new plants and animals that she saw, but she couldn’t. In the same storm that had washed her out to sea the strong winds had caused her, who was stupidly clutching her knife with her teeth, to be bashed into the tree she’d been climbing. Her knife had cut as easily through her cheeks as it did through her prey when she skinned them.

The pain had been bad, but not as bad as she felt right now. Her cheeks had been complete sliced open, extending her mouth unnaturally. At least he salty ocean water had kept the wound from getting infested, but it’d done nothing to ease the pain as Vollerei stitched her cheeks closed with a, whimpering in pain all the time. The worst part was that Vollerei couldn’t eat right now! Well, she could, but not very well; using small bites so that she didn’t rip the stitches apart meant that she could never eat her fill… not without pain that is. The entire week since she’d first landed her stomach had not stopped complaining.
Vollerei lay listening to the sounds of home that sounded so wrong coming from this not-home land. The same scents, same sounds, same sights... it was like another Chibale Island! But it wasn’t home and the only way to get back home meant swimming the long distance back to the island, or building a raft to row across in. Neither of which sounded very fun, but must be done. Vollerei’s stomach woke up again, grumbling at the small amount of food she’d been feeding it. Patting it sadly, Vollerei got up and crawled out of the large folded leaves that she’d wrapped around her in a globe to keep the night critters away.

Looking out she could see the tops of the purple and red tree tops rustling in the early morning breezes, the newly risen sun made them glow like a field of crystals. Fluttering about above and through the trees were many types of butterflies, a beautiful picture of many colors and light. But The hunger in her stomach made the lovely scene before her that much worse; all those creatures that she couldn’t eat… it was almost torture just watching them! Vollerei hadn’t had meat, mammal or insect, for an entire week and it made her rather grumpy and foul tempered. She’d been forced to eat mushrooms and fruits cut up into little pieces or boiled into a soup so she could drink it. Not very filling and something she hated eating a lot of... it was all she ever got when she was sick and had to rely on her family to feed her. Bland soups made up the plants she did recognize was healthy, she knew that, but just not very filling…

Grumbling to herself, Vollerei descended from the tree, quite agile for someone of her size and weight. She was taller and broader than her sisters usually, unless they were full Blades and had muscle mass. She swung herself quietly down until the dawn light faded and the only thing lighting the way were the luminescent plants and crystal growths that glowed in the dark. So very like her home, but there would not be any rescue group that could find her, they’d be looking for her on her home island, not this land. So Vollerei knew she must suffer through the pain alone and be extra vigilant until she was able to return. An alkidike girl, unarmed and hurt, was easy prey for larger predators... plus who knew what else lived out here! What if there were Earthilings out here? Vollerei had heard many dreadful stories about them and what they did to young alkidikes... though how much was true she didn’t know. And out here, all alone, it was easy to believe the worst.

Vollerei heard the sounds of rustling behind her. Quickly pausing and looking about, all she saw were vines… she’d remembered a tale she’d heard from a companion of Denker’s that told of vines that caught and chocked people to death before consuming them… not something Vollerei wanted to happen to her! Bad enough that she couldn’t eat much right now, but to be eaten? Never! Plus she’d lost her knife after it’d cut her, so nothing to defend herself with made for a very nervous Vollerei. As she waited and watched, she saw one of the vines slowly creeping towards her. She could barely see it out of the corner of her eye as it stealthy moved towards her.

“Blast,” She muttered. Looking down she saw that while there was quite a drop, there were no vines or hard crystals below her. So it would be safer to jump and get out of range of the vine…Growling under her breath, she launched herself out from the tree, hoping that the carnivorous vine didn’t have to long of a reach.
She hit the ground with a thud and rolled to her feet quickly, as she scanned the area and glanced upwards in time to see the vine snap violently towards her then retreat to creep back up the tree.

“Hmm, guess that Blade that Denker was with last month hadn’t been lying about them… I should thank her next time I see her…” Vollerei mumbled softly. That story that had seen like a tale to scare people with had been true and had saved her life. If she’d never heard it, she might have been eaten… Guess this jungle had its dark and dangerous side just like the jungles of her home.

Met a spear-user Alkidike called Jerarda. I rather like her. She didn't mind my appetite and we got along rather well. Hopefully she delivers my message to my family.. and that enough time passes that I won't get too much lectures when I go home...

Solo: Exploration!
Word Count: 1080

Vollerei sat upon a thick branch of a tall tree and looked out over the sea of trees and the many varieties of insects buzzing about in the leaves. The flashing glimmers of the brightly colored wings sparkled like jewels amid the deep blue and purple leaves of the jungle’s leaves.

“Should I head home? I’m sure my family is worried sick about me... Never been gone this long before. Heck, I’ve always told them where I was but I just left without a note or anything this time... hmmm.. Mothers are gonna be so pissed once I get back…”

Vollerei muttered out loud to herself with a sigh. They’d be relived she was okay, but man afterwards… She shuddered. The punishments and lectures… Yeah, better not go home just yet… But what to do then? She turned and looked over her shoulder at the ocean and her island home in the distance. If she didn’t go home, than she could stay here.. or go exploring.

“Now that I think about it, I’ve been in Jauhar for a few months and I’ve only run into Jerarda so far. Either those shifters are really good at hiding or there really isn’t anyone else nearby.”
Perhaps she should go looking for them…. Vollerei grinned, careful not to stretch her nearly healed cheeks too much, she knew what to do know! She’d go inland, through the jungle and perhaps even further… What else could be out there? What types of tasty creatures and new foods existed? She licked her lips in anticipation. Time to go a-hunting new and exotic foods! And meet new people too, who, perhaps, could be convinced to make Vollerei tasty food. Yeah... that sounded like a good plan.

Vollerei jumped off her branch and vanished into treetops. Swinging from vines to branches, jumping from tree limbs to tree limbs, she moved quickly and fairly quietly through the jungle’s canopy. She kept a wary eye out for any dangers or for any possible meals, but mostly she kept her eyes peeled for any person, Shifter or Alkidikes.

The day passed slowly, with Vollerie alternating hunting and exploring, always on the lookout for traces of other people. The more she thought about it the more she wanted to meet non Alkidikes, especially the things that her sisters had called “men.” The way they talked about them made them seem like a whole other race... though she had heard that the other races had both women and men. How odd… What was use was a man? Alkidikes didn’t have them so why were they even needed?

It was almost evening time when Vollerei came upon a waterfall. She’d heard it in the distance and had been heading to it ever since. Where there was water there was often food and possibly people! She slowed down when she heard what sounded like voices. With the torrent of the waterfall nearby, it was hard to hear anything, but there was definitely ... something making noise up ahead. She slunk through the trees and climbed down the roots of one large tree that was protruding off the cliff that the waterfall was falling off. Being careful not to slip off the wet roots, Vollerei hid behind a bunched up knot of roots and the cliff wall, making sure she was snug and the roots would hold before she peered out.

Below her the river fell in a cascade of sound and light, the setting sun causing it to glow a golden red. The large lake it fell into held several figures. All of them dark skinned with pale glimmering hair. Vollerei’s heart speed up, Shifters! She’d finally found some shifters! Though, as she peered through and saw more details, they all appeared to be very buff and flat chested. She smiled, well, at least she wasn’t the only small chest girl out there!

Though what were they all doing without their clothes on? Vollerei shook her head, they were bathing of course! Though they must be near their home or in an area they considered to be safe if they were bathing here.
Vollerei began to look for a way to go back up and away, no sense in watching people bathe, that was a bit rude even for her to contemplate. She sneakily began to climb up and away, making sure that she kept vines between her and any potential eyes looking up. As the sun set and the moon rose, she looked back one more time, and witnesses something that took her breath away.
The black skin began to pale as darkness set. The Shifters below her didn’t change their actions, they just continued on goofing off and bathing as if they were used to this happening. Vollerei paused and settled down once more to watch.

“So that’s why they’re called shifters! They change colors… that’s really neat…” She muttered to herself, her eyes wide and shining with curiosity. Oh if only she could go down and talk to them! But there were too many, and she knew from tales told to her that Shifters didn’t like Alkidikes.. or was it the other way around? She wasn’t sure, but knew that there was tension between her people and these fascinating people. Perhaps if she could meet one alone… one that wasn’t going to attack or flee should she try to approach…

“I wonder how they do that? Is it a gift from the gods? Does it just happen or can they control it? ... If I eat what they’re eating, would I start changing colors too?” That would be epic! So much fun... but... Vollerei shook her head, something this strange and miraculous must be from the Gods, eating the same food would allow her to change color like that. A silly thought, but oh… if only!

She sighed and looked up at the rising moon. At least it was large and bright tonight. She shouldn’t have any trouble getting back to her sleeping space if she headed out now. If she stayed to follow the Shifters back to their village and investigate them more she’d never get back before the moon set and plunged the tree tops into darkness. As it was now, she’d have to stay in the top layers of the trees to avoid the darkness of the jungle floor and the predators who lurked there.

With one last longing look down, Vollerei headed out into the moon-lite jungle.

I met a man today! Funny and very skinny and flat... It was rather awkward at first cause his chest was bare... Nothing there to see, but still! Its only polite to cover it! We talked for a bit, then a baby kinfa tried to nest on his gaudy headdress. Funny l'il thing. I'm taking care of him now, calling him Zwielicht, or Zweil for short.

Solo: A Spear of My Own
Word Count: 1063

Volle had returned to her small shelter near the coast again to contemplate her situation. Outside it was raining, as it had been for several days now. The air was humid but not hot as it usually was. This rain was cold and it had chilled the jungle. It was still comfortable, just a little chilly and she didn’t want to be out in the cold rain too long. There was a high chance of her getting too chilled and sick.

Vollerei looked down at the sleeping Zweil. Smiling softly she reached out and ran her hands gently through his feathers. Zweil burbled sleepily at her touch. Looking out over the rainy jungle she thought on how she’d be able to feed both her and Zweil better. While it was just her, she was confident she could hunt and feed herself in most environments, even the strange cold one Zuri had come from. But with Zweil? No. She wasn’t sure she could. Not until he learned to hunt himself and that wouldn’t be awhile. She listened to the rain as it pattered thorough the leaves and watched the glowing crystals that briefly illuminated the rain that fell near them. Her thoughts ran back to her encounter with Jerarda. More importantly; Jerarda’s spear. She’d felt comfortable using it and it’d seemed to fit her better than the bow her mother’s tried to train her in. It’d been so much easier to fish using the spear than her hands. Perhaps it’d be easier to hunt larger prey too. The spear would allow her to reach longer distances, perhaps even be able to throw it from a far. Though it’d probably take time to use it properly, it was time Vollerei was willing to spend. Perhaps she’d run into Jerarda again and have her teach her to use it! Vollerei shook her head. No, that was unlikely to happen soon. Jerarda was headed home and Vollerei was headed out into the world. So she’d have to make one and train in it by herself! Or maybe she could steal a spear.. no. Volle sighed; she knew she was good at hunting and slinking about the jungle, but not that good. Plus she didn’t want to steal anything. That was wrong.

“I’ll just have to make one and hope it works!” She muttered to herself. Bending down and kissed Zweil gently, she whispered, “Stay here, I’ll be back in a bit!”

She wouldn’t admit it, but she’d grown quite attached to Zwielicht and had stopped thinking about him as a potential food source. She’d probably tease him and call him lunch every now and then, but she knew she wouldn’t be able to bring herself to kill and eat her baby kinfa.

She sighed as she left the shelter of her brief home. The rain was chilly, and she quickly ran up the tree to hide under some large leaves that somewhat protected her from the rain. Carefully traveling along the branches and moving from shelter to shelter, Vollerei kept an eye out for a specific tree with a thin enough branch. She kept to the canopies because she knew any branch near the ground would be too thick for her purposes. She wanted a thin staff but still be strong for her spear. She’d already found some rocks she could sheer into a tip yesterday. She’d never made a spear before, but she had made arrow tips. And a spear was just a really really large arrow that wouldn’t break easily right? If not, then she’d have to go and find a settlement where she could purchase a spear. Though what she was going to trade for it she had no clue! Smiling at her thoughts, she finally spotted what she was looking for. She quickly clambered up the tree and leaped to her target. This particular tree had strong branches that weren’t brittle and tended not to be too flexible; just what she wanted! Grabbing a new knife, one she’d made herself last week, out of her bag and began to saw one branch off at the base where it met the larger branch. It took many minutes, mostly cause she didn’t want to move too fast and ruin her knife or the wood. Though the cool rain certainly didn’t help! Finally she got her new staff off. It was far too big right now, but she’d fix that soon! Smiling happily, Vollerei put her knife away and sprinted back to her shelter eager to get back.

Zweil had woken up and was cheeping sadly as he sat by the shelters entrance. At the sight of Volerei returning, he began to hop up and down. Mommy was back! Why’d mommy leave? No leave me lone! What branch for? Can I eat it?

Vollerei laughed at her baby kinfa’s antics and leaned the staff against the wall as she grabbed a piece of cloth and toweled herself dry. Then she picked Zweil up, who’d gone over to investigate the staff and was in danger of knocking it down.

“That's not for eating or playing with! Silly you!” She said affectionately as she hugged him and let his warmth warm her up after her chilly trip. She then set him down and fed him the remains of the cooked meat from their last hunt. Humming to herself, she grabbed two rocks, one for chipping the other for the spear head. Sitting down, she began to carefully chip away at the rock, making sure Zweil didn’t get near or in the way. The shards were sharp and she made sure to keep the largest in her bag for use later. After the weather had cleared up and the vines had dried, she planned on going out and grabbing the stronger ones to use in holding the spear head to the spear shaft. Then she’d have to go hunting to test it out. Vollerei grinned. She couldn’t wait to create then test her spear! She’d make sure to first go try it against an animal she knew she could kill, then against tougher and tougher creatures. She would finally be able to feed both her bottomless pit of a stomach and Zweil! And then they could go traveling like Vollerei had been meaning to. Go meet other people, find their settlements and see what types of food they had!

That was more entertaining than I thought it'd be! Besides getting lost and then having to back track and then having to go through that dark dark tunnel and getting freaked out, it was worth it! We found the treasure! My family isn't gonna believe what I saw! Zweil wasn't so happy about any of that adventure except seeing Tau and his bright colors again... He really doesn't like the dark or tunnels...

Well that was a fun little side trip! I managed to track down the food bandits. Good thing a group of my sisters were already there, cause I don't know how else I was gonna break that bandit group and get all the food back from them. Now all I have to do is go round up the Radaku that I released and take this food back to the villagers.

Solo: Returning Home
User Image
Vollerei watched the army stream away, many to return home with some to remain and defend this area. She sighed and shook her head. It was time for her to head home as well, talk to her family and see if they were all right. She gathered up her bag, made sure Snack was still in it to keep safe and whistled for Zweil to come. It was time to leave.
Traveling back home was interesting; she had to keep dodging Oban patrols. One of the smaller patrols got too careless and didn’t look up. Grinning to herself she dropped down on the larger one, her spear impaling him on the spot. Zweil swopped down and raked the other scout as Vollerei removed her spear with a messy shake and turned stab the other one. She heard voices approaching and grinned. This was one patrol that would not be happy! Chuckling to herself, she clambered back into the trees and ran off the pathway created by the thick tree braches. These fire people were not dressed for the jungle… nor did they seem to check the canopy for enemies. Which means the predators in the jungle will be able to hunt them fairly easy until they get wise. Which was fine by her!

After a week of traveling, she finally reached her ‘home’ in Jahuar near Andile.
“Better clean this out for now,” she said to Zweil and Snack who were exploring the small primitive dwelling. “Not sure when we’ll be back!”
It had, thankfully, not been raided by animals nor destroyed by the weather. Which mean the few items she’d left in here were safe. That night they stayed there, and when she left the next day, she left an empty husk behind. Maybe one day she’d come back and make an actual home... if she didn’t find place else to live. But for now, she would let nature reclaim it.

Traveling through the jungle she saw that while the war had disturbed the area directly about the confrontation, further in the jungle people carried on like normal. Maybe because they are so far they do not feel threatened as much… plus the jungle is a dangerous place, even the Oban’s will find it hard to get at us here! This calmed her anxieties about he family. They were sure to be home and safe!

She reached the ferry her people used after a few days of travel. First time I get to use it and it’s to go home, she thought in amusement. The first time she’d crossed was in a storm after she’d been washed out to sea. That had been close to a year ago…. Yup, my mother’s are probably very upset with me, she thought with a sigh. Glad I asked Jerarda to deliver word that I was alive at least…

She sat and ran her hands through Zweil’s feathers and preened him as she waited in the ferry. The up and down motion of the waves made her stomach upset. Zweil and Snack didn’t seem to care, they were crashed out and enjoying the sun and breeze. Once the ferry docked, Vollerei happily left it behind, giving only a nod of thanks to the ferrywoman before heading away. The ferry was about a half day’s travel from Amara, where Vollerei’s family lived.
“Time to go home,” she muttered to herself as she hoisted her bag filled with her gear and Snack on to her back and shifted Zweil to her shoulder. As she strode off she heard a voice call her name.

“Vollerei, is that you?” She turned to look at what had been an almost friend; Liro a taller ad slimmer Alkidke with short cropped hair.

“Hi Liro.” Vollerei responded, “Long time no see.” Liro trotted up and looked her up and down before smirking.

“Geezs, Volle, you put on more weight. Trees aren’t going to hold you for much longer!” She gave Vollerei a quick hug before smiling gently. “We were worried when we couldn’t find you... then a Blade comes by and tells your parent’s you were alive… and on the main land.” He twitched and antennae, inviting an explanation. Volle rolled her eyes in response.

“Trees hold me up just fine Liro! Unlike you, one’s never cracked and sent me to the ground before.” She grinned. That had been hilarious to watch. “And I got washed out to sea. You know, big wave, storm that sort of thing.”

“Oh.. and ah.. those odd scars? I’d have thought you wouldn’t let anything hurt yorur cheeks since it would hurt your eating!”
Liro, Volle remembered, was a talkative gossip… and loved to pry. But she’d been friendly to a Volle who hadn’t had much friends…. So she sighed and rolled her shoulders.

“Never go climbing in a storm clutching a knife in your teeth. It’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever done.”

Liro’s eyes widened; “You did what? Wait wait! Let me guess… you were trying to get to food and decided you didn’t have the extra time to put the knife in your belt…”

Volle grinned and turned to leave. “Pretty much how it happened. I’m headed off, so if you have the time and want to talk…”

“Oh, finally going home? You sure about that? Your parent’s were very worried… you’ll get a talking too!” Liro fell in step with Vollerei, obviously chatting was more important than whatever task he’d had to do.

“So? I sent word… and I suppose a talking too is what I deserve for being stupid enough to leave the house during a storm and not tell anyone.” Where once she would have been very ansty or moody about the lecture incoming, now Vollerei could see why her parent’s did what they did. And it didn’t matter as much. It was their way of showing they cared.

Liro looked at her and saw this. “Oh. Guess what ever you’ve seen has helped you grow up...”

“Yeah, you should try it some time. Bout time your scrawny a** grew some!” She responded with a grin.

“I am not scrawny!”

“Oh really?” Volle put her hand suggestively on her very wide and curvy hips. Liro blushed slightly.

“Well.. everyone’s scrawny compared to you if you take that stance!”

“Of course everyone’s scrawny. Don’t you know that I’m the absolute picture of perfection?”

Liro laughed and shook her head.

She and Vollerei talked as they walked towards Amara. Chatting and catching up on all the gossip and news. Liro hadn’t made it off the island for the war, though many had. She’d stayed behind to help take care of the young and allow more experienced warriors to leave. Vollerei wanted to know what had happened, if anything, at the islands while she’d been a way.
It was a nice friendly chat, one in which she noticed Liro didn’t want to end… and found herself agreeing to meet up for lunch and a hunt tomorrow.
