Title: That Nagging Feeling Characters: Dominic Status: Complete
Summary: Something seems to keep gnawing at the back of Dominic's mind, and it's keeping him from focusing and getting any of his work done. Word Count: 921
Notes: Solo x1
-----
It wasn't out of the ordinary for Dominic Styles to be blasting something like Rise Against at 2am in the morning while working on a project, so if one were to enter the aforementioned youth's room it would seem as though he was doing something that was probably considered normal for him by most. Well... actually anyone that's known him for at least a week would know that doing something like that is absolutely normal for him.
What they wouldn't pull right off the bat, perhaps with the only exception being his mother, was the fact that everything was simply not normal for the eighteen-year-old as of late. No, it wasn't anything major per se, but it was this nagging sort of feeling. It'd been bugging him for better part of the past two days and, although his usual game personality wasn't severely affected, one could easily tell that he wasn't quite as hyped up about everything as he usually would have been. Not that he let them comment or anything, but he's kept his practiced smile on so no one's asked too many questions...yet.
Hell, he wasn't even really asking any. Not right off the bat anyway. After two days of his mojo more or less being tossed around like a salad, fluctuating from awesome to cruddy and everything in between every few hours depending on his state of mind, he finally started giving the nagging feeling a bit more thought and attention. The timing was pretty convenient, with his decision to pay attention coming on a Friday which meant he was able to work on a project overnight to keep his mind alert and focused and on the ball.
Unfortunately, since he started working at around 8pm after getting back to his room, he only managed to do anything about his project and hardly anything at all about the issue that was throwing him off. And then, as what often happens when he's distracted by something, he couldn't do much else on his project at around 12am, which meant that for the past two hours he'd been fiddling with the same gear on the project - which was another "improvement" on his poor, old and beat up alarm clock - over and over again.
"Auughhh..." the teen finally grumbled and dropped the screwdriver and gear in his hands. Dom glanced at the currently functional alarm clock that his mother just sent over for him to use, heaving a relatively exasperated sigh after seeing the time. He got up lazily from his seat, running a hand through his messier-than-usual hair, and simply transferred to the bed and sinking into the soft mattress.
It was still there, that nagging feeling. He didn't know what it was, but there was something about it that was...just weird. During the few times in which he'd actually managed to put some thought into the reason for his having such an annoyingly unrelenting...thing...poking at the back of his brain, he managed to come up with a few theories. Uh...one theory, more like. So, with nothing left at his disposal, and (somewhat) stupidly disregarding the hour, he picked up his cell phone and dialed.
Riiing. Riiing. Rii-click.
"Hello?" came a familiar voice, albeit a bit groggy. Made sense, he figured, so he shrugged it off and replied.
"Hey mom," he started, pausing for a second to perhaps reconsider before ultimately going through with asking. "Um...did I miss someone's birthday?" came the question rather hesitantly. There was a pause on the other line now, and Dominic waited patiently for his mother to reply.
"No, now stop whatever you're doing, get cleaned up, drink some milk and go to bed. Good night, Dominic."
Now he felt kind of really stupid for asking, but at least it was off his chest (sort of?). The dark haired youth laughed a little and apologized and bid his mother a good night before finally hanging up the phone. He spent a few extra minutes wasting time staring at the ceiling of his dorm room, eyes squintier than usual due to his current lack of sleep, trying to mull together another theory before turning in for bed. When he couldn't even come up with just a piece of a theory, he decided that bed was probably a better idea. Maybe tomorrow (or later to be more accurate) he could toss a few ideas around with his friends.
With a groan the teen sat up and did most of what his mother told him; he put away his tools, snuck out to the bathroom to get cleaned up, got dressed for and went to bed. Milk sounded like a good idea too, but as Hillworth was something like a prison he highly doubted that he'd be able to sneak into the kitchen, grab a glass and get back to his room while going unnoticed by the faculty. Sighing one last time, Dominic turned the lamp next to his bed off before finally closing his eyes. He had a feeling the nagging wasn't quite over just yet, so he could probably still try and figure it out some more after a few hours of sleep. It might even do him some good, so with that final thought in mind the young tinkerer eventually drifted into his own lala-dreamland. His only issue at that point was probably that, as it was ever-present at the back of his mind, there was a good chance that it could follow him in there too.

Title: A Good Reason to Follow Curfew Characters: Dominic Status: Complete
Summary: Dominic is out late once again, and learns the hard way why following the rules can be a very, very good idea. Word Count: 1085
Notes: Solo x2
-----
Curious minds perhaps are those most prone to danger, especially if it involves a particular raven-haired Hillworth senior out for an illegal near-midnight stroll through Destiny City on a Wednesday night. That's right Hillworth, you and your rules can shove it as far as Dominic was concerned. He wanted to roam, so he was gonna roam, damn it!
The rebelling teen walked through a particularly isolated part of the city, actually already on his way back to Hillworth, tired and relatively ready to drop dead as soon as he got into his dorm. You know, assuming they would still let him onto the premises. He could already anticipate what the faculty would do, so he was half-bracing himself for the earful he would get from the principal, not to mention the beating (not literal) he would get from the crazy teachers and the rest of the faculty on patrol that night. The teen sighed, running a hand through his disheveled locks and wondering why he didn't take his bike with him earlier that afternoon. All he needed to do was focus and keep his eyes from wandering and he'd be back at Hillworth in fifteen, twenty minutes tops.
Just as he started gaining his focus though, as he passed an oddly darkened street - the street lights were dimmer than usual - he caught sight of something.
"What?"
The teen slowed down and eventually stopped in his tracks, squinting his eyes to try and get a clearer picture of what exactly he saw. It was a guy...sort of...floating? Dominic leaned his head forward, his brow quirking in ever-increasing curiosity as he noted the thing kind of just...there. Maybe it was waiting for something? Really, most people who saw something floating and it wasn't a balloon or something that was meant to float they'd just turn tail and make a break for the opposite direction, but Dominic was a whole other story entirely. Of course, with his curious and ever-inquiring nature, the teen stupidly moved toward it.
He was about two or so yards away from it by the time its head shot up in his direction, and his eyes widened when he noticed it was slowly coming...toward ********> he muttered to himself, only then noting the chills going up and down his spine and actually paying his "fight or flight" instinct any attention. It screamed flight, so he ran, and he ran fast. Apparently not fast enough though, as he felt the thing behind him catching up. It felt like he was going to fall over from the speed his feet were taking him - not lightning fast, but faster than he was used to probably because he was freaking out about whatever it was getting to him - but he kept going, ignoring the protests coming from his lungs and his legs and the urge to look behind him to see where it was.
All common sense told him not to go toward Hillworth, so he was going in a whole other direction. What would the teachers say if he brought this uninvited guest over to the school!? He'd probably get booted for sure, and he was so close to graduating he wasn't about to let that happen. He was heading back towards Main Street, flying past buildings and basically ignoring anyone and anything else around him - though there really were almost no other people about at this hour.
"Alright!" he said between breaths as he went. "I swear! I swear!" Dominic half-screamed, partly to get someone - anyone's - attention and partly to convince himself. "If I survive.. uhh... whatever the hell this is... I'll never... be outside... past curfew... ever.. again! Ever!"
The dark haired youth had a feeling he looked pretty ridiculous at that point, running at breakneck speed trying to get away from a floating object of unidentified origin and screaming something that probably sounded unintelligible to the random passerby. He didn't care though, so as soon as he finished his little oath to follow Hillworth's curfew rule he steeled his resolve and, at the first chance he got, ducked into an alley and circled back in the direction he'd come as soon as he was back on the main street. The thing was still on his tail though, and it looked about ready to do horrible, unspeakable things to the guy, so Dominic sped up his pace, pushing his limits almost past the breaking point.
Soon enough he found himself nearby where he'd run into the floating ghost of death (that's what he was calling it, and he wasn't planning on getting caught anytime soon), and he made for the trees behind where he saw the thing for the first time. Once in the brush, he felt it was safe to rest, so he collapsed behind what was probably the best hiding spot at his disposal, and tried to catch his breath.
He whispered a few words to calm himself down, still breathing heavily but keeping an eye out for the floating grim reaper. It kind of felt like he living one of those moments in those suspense/thriller movies, where the victims were waiting for the baddie to come and slash their heads off or drag them to the chamber of no return, but the teen tried not to psyche himself out and waited patiently. It was then that he heard it - voices. People! Headed for him! The teen did a little celebratory fist pump, then waited patiently for them to pass his little hiding shrub. As soon as they did and were a few feet away, he made a break for it.
Cowardly? Absolutely, but as far as he was concerned it was better them than him. As he ran around the park and circled back to go in the direction of Hillworth, he heard a shrill scream and a cry for help. Dominic grit his teeth as he ignored the urge to go back and try to help. What could he do anyway? Whack the thing with the bag he'd been clutching to for dear life while he ran not more than ten minutes ago? He highly doubted that would help anyone, and he'd probably just get sucked into whatever trouble that couple found themselves in. He could help next time, if there was gonna be a next time (and he sincerely hoped not), but tonight he was going home.
Alive and in one piece, thank you very much.

Title: The Start of "Adult" Worries.. Sort Of Characters: Dominic Status: Complete
Summary: Dominic's family surprises him at his graduation from high school! Word Count: 1329
Notes: Solo x2
-----
Finally, graduation day.
With a ghost of a smirk playing at his features, Dominic Josiah Styles, Jr. breathed deeply and adjusted the tie that he’d properly put on today – it was a special day, after all – doing a last minute check in the bathroom mirror. The teen actually went to a barber to get his goatee trimmed neatly and his hair was down and neater than anyone thought possible (or at least that’s what he figured, since no one ever saw him with his hair down or tidied anyway). Dom was pulling out all the stops! He was graduating! …Miracu- er, finally! Yeah!
The idea of actually walking across a stage and grabbing a fake diploma for ceremony’s sake and shaking hands with all the teachers that had lectured his ears off for the past three years… It almost brought a tear to, wait…no. No, that was dust. Dominic wiped at the bit of dust that had decided to pepper his left eye, a bit of tears forming as he did so. “As if I’d cry!” the teen reassured himself. It wasn’t a familiar feeling since the last time he cried was probably before his dad suddenly barged in on his peaceful life six years ago, so he couldn’t really be sure he wasn’t getting all emotional or whatever. The teen made a face at that, then shrugged and made a go for the door.
He would have opened it, too, but his phone rang just as he started turning the knob. ”The hell?” he muttered, expression contorted into one of annoyance. It didn’t last very long, though. The caller ID blinked “Mom,” so with a raised brow Dominic picked up the phone.
“Hey-o, almost-high-school-grad Dominic, at your service,” he greeted cheerily. A soft chuckle traveled through the receiver, causing the teen to smile warmly.
“Did you get the package I sent, Mr. Almost-high-school-grad?” the seamstress replied in kind. Dominic could practically feel the warmth from his mother’s beaming smile through the phone. Gross, when the hell did he get all mushy like that? Hm. …Maybe he missed her or something. Stupidly, since he was kind of caught up in his own thoughts of possibly visiting LA or asking his family (sans his father, of course) to come up to DC for a visit, the teen nodded. Jeanne reacted rather quickly with another chuckle, saying, “I can’t see you if you’re nodding you’re head, Junior.”
The teen froze then, a rather lengthy pause suddenly inserting itself into their exchange, and tried to laugh it off, his face heating up a little. “Yeah, I got it,” he started to say, then moved to his desk and took the letter that was taped securely to the outside of the tiny box. “The letter said not to open it though. Why’d you send me something I couldn’t open?” The teen quirked a brow at this, suddenly remembering the fact that he decided he’d call to ask that very question three days ago when the package had first arrived. Ah! Damn last-minute graduation things to take care of…
“You’ll have to wait until after the ceremony,” she replied calmly. “In the meantime, aren’t you going to be late?”
At that, Dom quickly switched the phone to his other hand and looked at his watch, eyes widening when he realized the time. “Shi- ahh, crap! I’ll call you back later, mom. Love you, bye!” He ended the call and slipped the phone into his pocket before hurrying out the door and to the ceremony.
----
Sitting through 3 years of stupid classes that he didn’t really care about, running countless laps around to serve as detention, and getting scolded until his ears were ready to just melt away all brought to an end with such a brief ceremony. Dominic had been a miracle graduate, even he would admit that, but he did it! He was a high school graduate, with a diploma and everything! Or...well, they'd mail the real thing later, but he definitely had one!
He was celebrating with a friend, whose parents were also out of town even on such a special day, in the gym that was full of other guys with their parents taking pictures to commemorate the special occasion. It was the simple fact that he knew that neither of their families was there that made him curious as to why he suddenly felt as though there was a camera being directed at them. When there was a sudden flash that came from his left, he raised a brow. ”I thought you said your parents weren’t gonna make it,” he said, suddenly moving to get his friend into a head lock and laughing. It was the usual sort of routine with them, and something he had to admit he was probably going to miss.
“They didn’t!” said friend protested for a bit, tapping Dominic’s arm as he pleaded his innocence. And then he heard it, that voice that was coming through the receiver of his cell phone no more than 2 hours ago.
The new high school grad released his friend and turned around, the shock of seeing his family for the first time in person in three whole years keeping any sort of sentences from forming in his head.
“Surprise!” his mother and younger brothers said in unison. Dominic took a second and tried to blink away the confusion. Surprise? Hell yeah, surprise! Soon enough the boy’s face broke into a smile as he walked up to his mother.
“What are you guys doin’ here?” he asked a bit stupidly. When she gave him a hug he realized that he’d gotten taller than her, and she was even wearing heels. Or…he thought she was. He didn’t actually check, but when did Jeanne Le Clair Styles not wear heels, anyway? That was probably a better question.
“Attending your graduation, stupid,” he heard a younger voice say, causing him to look down at his younger brother, Lucas. Glancing to the side he saw that even Raphael was there, and in his arms was pudgy little Jasmyn! Dom probably looked really stupid, smiling as wide as he was. Their brief little reunion soon ended and the family, sans Senior, soon made their way to a nice little restaurant and spent a number of hours catching up and sharing stories. It’d been a while since he enjoyed himself as much as he had that night; although, the longer they were there the heavier his chest got. When they finally said their goodbyes – Jeanne had somewhere to be and the boys still had school so they couldn’t stay the night – and Dominic was in his room, packing the last of his things, he finally realized.
Did he actually felt kind of…lonely? Was that the feeling? He’d never acknowledged it before so there was no way he could be sure. With all this new knight and order and chaos business now in the mix, he hadn’t even stopped to consider what this meant for his mom or his younger brothers. Heck, even his baby sister had to be someone to consider. Not his dad though; a youma can go and have him for breakfast, as far as the teen was concerned.
The teen shook his head and the thoughts away, though the heaviness in his chest was still there, and kept on packing. He only had a week to get out of there, and he was barely starting! Thankfully, the surprise his mom had pulled on him was at least going to make moving out that much easier. There were other things to worry about at the moment, though, besides where he'd be staying for however much longer he'd be in Destiny City. Heavy feelings and deep thoughts were not a priority, and definitely not something to let himself get depressed about on such a glorious day!
He just graduated! The rest of life’s worries can wait, at the very least, until tomorrow. …Right?
