[ After the events at the mall, Ridley returns home with a rather upset mother ]
The ride home had been unnaturally quiet - and perhaps rightfully so - with Monica lost in her thoughts over the whole ordeal, trying to calm her anger and that overwhelming fear. Ridley desperately wanted to talk to her mother about what had happened at the mall but every time she looked over to her mother and saw those narrowed eyes and the muttering lips she always stopped. Some things were often lost on the little orange haired girl, but that familiar look was evidence enough for her to keep quiet.
She still didn't get a word in when the shopping duo got home but conversations did seem to resume, at least between her mother and father. Conner was practically shoved out of the kitchen so the parents could discuss what had happened and for Jasper to calm his furious wife. The brothers simply gave their little sister a knowing looking, something out of pity but a lot out of mirth in wonder of what she could have done this time. They left her on the couch in the family room, advising her to stay put and to remain quiet until judgement was passed, and had then gone to their own rooms to escape the tirade their mother would possibly rain down upon them. So, Ridley sat in silence frustrated and rather upset about everything.
This was all supposed to be an awesome happening. She had gotten some wonderful magical power and now she was feeling just terrible, the complete opposite of what she wanted. Ridley wanted to celebrate, to run around the room in circles and explain how awesome this was to her mom. But... her mother had gotten so angry from seeing her form and what had happened. And ********* - a real talking cat! - had told her not to tell anyone about her new magical gift.
It was so depressing.
She couldn't share it. Not with her parents, not with her family. People she would love to tell. The cat had spoken and it seemed important enough to follow.
After a few good minutes passed by, the angry hushed tones that drifted out of the kitchen softened. They weren't completely gone, but it seemed at least not as tense as it had been. It at least meant that her mother had calmed down, wasn't as furious, but it also probably meant that her punishment was coming around the bend. Ridley sighed and pulled out her phone from her pocket. Most likely she wasn't going to see it for a few days - at least when she wasn't at school and stuff. It was the usual first thing to go, along with certain privileges.
With the recent events still going through her mind, and now that she had been sitting there for a few minutes bored. She unlocked the device and tapped the icon for the internet and carefully typed in the first thing that came to mind into the google search bar. 'Hygiea' ... that was her other name, the one ********* had given her. A few seconds of loading later, matches popped up - along with a corrected spelling. A lot of them, wikipedia seemed to have a few even. Her little fingers hovered over the first link and tapped on it, taking her to the wikipedia link about an asteroid. Her orange eyed only managed to scan a few of the lines before a shadow fell over her and someone cleared his throat.
"Ridley." Obviously her father. Not sounding as scolding as she would imagine. The large man kneeled in front of his daughter and gently took the phone out her hands, "your mother and I discussed a few things about what happened tonight," he began to tell her, "you are obviously in pretty big trouble."
"Now," he interrupted her as soon as her mouth opened up to protest, "I'll hear your side of the story later, I'm sure you have a really good explanation but the point is is that you ran away from your mom during a really dangerous situation and could have gotten hurt, or worse killed." The gentleness from his voice seemed to escape at the end of his sentence and his eyes grew stern. Ridley's eyes tried desperately not to water.
"We're really glad you're okay Ridley, but that was a stupid thing to do." His large hands grabbed onto hers, noticing her distress. "We're not obviously going to kill you ourselves because of this," Jasper forced a smile, "and we obviously have to give you a rather hefty punishment."
For a nine year old, it was often pretty tough to decide on what to do. In the end, Ridley's cellphone was taken away and was to be given it only when she was at school - locked and only for making calls in case of emergency. Her outdoor privileges were taken away, special perks she had been given, television and games. And so so many stars from her chart. All for two months. It was as much as they could do with a child her age but knowing their daughter it was steep. And the expression on Ridley's face was distress.
Jasper laid a hand on her shoulder and ushered her towards her room to get ready for dinner and to begin her grounding. Ridley nodded as she hopped off the couch, turning to give her mother a sad apologizing smile and retreating - where she could remain curled on her bed with Priss. Monica seemed to reply in kind and hugged herself before calling for Conner to resume his duties in the kitchen. Her mother turned to retreat back in the room as his father pulled himself onto the couch with a deep sigh and flipped on the television.
