Bringing Home Baby

Trois had been called in to work that day rather early. It was surprising, since he'd had so few children to teach over the past few months. Turns out that it wasn't even about teaching anyone.

Instead, they'd handed him the most adorable little girl he'd ever seen, with wavy chocolate hair and bright green eyes. She was in a simple little white dress and looked up at Trois with eyes that he couldn't deny. There was a lot of paperwork, much signing and initialing on the lines that were pointed out to him. By the time the two made it home, the afternoon had come and gone, and the sun was just barely starting to fade from the sky.

The man tried to come in quietly, twisting the knob fully to open and close the door, pressing his finger to his lips at the girl, who mimicked the action. Trois chuckled softly at her cuteness before turning around, face dropping when he realized that his stealth act was for nothing; his mate was waiting for him in the living room.

Deux was very unamused to see his mate come into the house later than usual, without calling, and with yet another kid in his arms. The ferret could already see where this was going, and he did not appreciate it, not to mention the fact that his opinion hadn't been consulted at all. He hadn't realized that he was suddenly put out of decisions as big as another mouth to feed, another body to clothe, another imminent teenager to fight with. He rose with his arms crossed, mouth a hard line of diapprovement.

"Y'know m'luv, there's this li'l invenshen called a phone that yah might wanna explaore. T'would get rid a' sitiations like thes, where I'm worried seck a'cause I can't get ahold a yah." His steely gaze fell on the girl in his mate's arms, not softening a bit. "And who the hell es thes? She bettah just be an overnight student wit' a growth problehm."

Trois had guilt written all over his face the moment that his mate's eyes fell on him. He glanced away awkwardly, shifting where he stood, glancing up to meet the ferret's eyes every now and again, but never for very long. The corn snake knew that what he'd done was wrong, he knew that he should have said something to Deux about it... it had just... slipped his mind at the sight of her sweet big eyes... and out of the knowledge that the man would have talked him out of it.

At the intensity of the man's gaze, the little girl shied away, green eyes going wide. Her long ears flicked back against her waves of brown hair and she buried her face against the cloth that covered her new Mama's chest, small fists gripping at the fabric. Already, she wasn't very sure that she liked this man... he was too intense and angry, and he didn't seem to like her at all.

"I... I know I should not 'ave done zhis, Deux, I... it was stupid of me to 'ave not called jou while I was at zhe Facility. I- I did not know zhat I would be gone for so long. Nor zhat I would come home with..." he smiled, looking rueful as he brought his eyes to the little girl in his arms, stroking her hair softly. "Zhis is Chailai... she's... our new daughter."

"No," came Deux's stern reply, managing to somehow look even more stubborn. He didn't relent, not even for a second, and glanced at the dressy child before glaring at Trois once again with tangible fury. "No. She es NOT stayin' 'ere. We alreadah 'ave kids, if yah haven't noticed, and et's not like we got moneh t' spare. Sarah 'n' Noua alreadeh 'elp us out outta the goodness a' their 'earts, we're not gonna - YOU'RE not gonna - throw this unexpected... burden on 'em."

He paced around the living room in exasperation, hands lighting their familiar cigarette. He breathed in deeply and let the smoke stream out his nostrils, not caring if it made the girl cough or die or whatever. "I'm furious that yah did thes wit'out meh, Trois. Yer right, et was extremeleh stupid of yah not to do th' responsible thin'. 'Nd because a' that, no mattah what yah say, I'm not gonna be alright wit' this." He jabbed his cigarette towards the child in his arms. "I didn't want anotha' kid, Trois. I was looken' forward t' havin' you t' myself for once... But no, apparentleh that can't 'appen." He inhaled once again, stewing in his own fury.

If Trois wasn't already in the dog house, he would have bothered to tell his mate to put out the cigarette, to think about his health and the cancer that he was so lucky to have in remission. The last thing that Trois wanted was for that to come back. His hazel eyes went back toward his mate and he forced the tears out of them, not wanting to look like he resorted to pity to win Deux over. He wasn't going to do that this time. It wasn't fair.

"I... I can get a job, Deux. Anozher one, I mean. I can 'elp pay for 'er, I promise zhat I would not do zhiw wizhout 'elping more zhan I already am. Besides, she... she doesn't need to eat or drink at all. She only needs water and sunlight to survive," he offered, praying that his mate would actually listen to what he was saying instead of staying with the stubborn demeanor that he was known for. The little girl's tail wrapped around her body, her small arms wrapping around it and hugging it to her chest.

"I'm sorry zhat I did not call jou about zhis, but... zhere is nozhing zhat I can do about it now, is zhere? What, jou want me to take 'er back to zhat terrible place, where zhey will do Lord-knows-what to 'er until she finds anozher 'ome?" Trois snapped, his temper finally grabbing a a hold of him, arms wrapping protectively around the frightened little girl and voice dropping to a fierce whisper. "I 'ave seen and worked with zhose kids, Deux! Zhey are terrified of zhat place! It takes forever to convince zhem to even trust me! I 'ave no idea what zhey do to zhose poor kids, but I am not sending 'er back zhere, no matter what."

Deux put out his cigarette and immediately lit another one, ignoring the weakness that was already beginning to tear at his lungs. He was too full of spite for his lying, sneaking mate to bother with his health; in fact, he wanted Trois to worry on purpose. Let him deal with the stress of it for a while. A sneer came unbidden on his face as Trois began making excuses, a long list of excuses that Deux found he couldn't ignore, as much as he wanted to. His rage still swirled within. How could he, how could he just ******** do this to him...?

"Fine. Do what yah want," came his blunt and emotionless answer, not looking at the naga and that stupid child in his arms. He gathered up his pack and his lighter and then moved for the door, not even bothering to pick up a coat. Deux's voice was leaden as he called over his shoulder. "But I alreadeh told yah: I'm not alright wit' this. Keep the girl, take 'er back, or give 'er t' someone else; I don't cahre. But she's yer responsibiliteh now. Unless et's a life 'er death sitiation, Ah'm havin' no part in et." With that he made to leave, yet another cigarette already halfway to his lips.

Trois' heartstrings quivered as he watched his mate leave, mouth moving to tell him to bring a coat with him, though the sound never left his throat. Something inside of him hurt, ached even, hardening already to resent the child in his arms. That part of him knew that this wasn't just a one-time incidence, that it wasn't something that would just go away as the girl grew. He realized as he watched the door close and held the toddler tighter in his arms that this was the beginning of an end that he'd never wanted to think about.

"M... Mama...?" the small creature in his arms whispered, looking up with tearful eyes toward the brightly coloured corn snake. Trois smiled sadly, wiping at his eyes, surprised to find his hand come back damp. The hand gently brushed a few strands of crinkled brown hair away from the sweetheart's speckled face and he pressed a soft kiss to her forehead. Cradling the dear close, he slithered down the hall to his room; a room that he assumed he would be alone in for the night.

With all the skill of a practiced master, he set up a pillow-cradle around the small spawn and settled his coils around her, snuggling up next to her with a soft sigh. Gently, the male pet her soft hair as she snuggled up, dozing off slowly. A faint smile came to his face. "I hope jou realize 'ow much I may truly be giving up for jou, dear 'eart..."

A Sweet Little Princess: Chailai Arrives

User Image

( Below is an English translation of Trois Lawrence's journal, written in his native French. )

Date: February 13, 2011
Time: 4:30 AM

Dear Diary,

xxxAbove is a snapshot of the little girl who managed to worm her way into my heart with nothing more than a look. It's a pity that I seem to have no backbone against the commands of my terrifying boss or any of his inferiors, and thusly went home with this little girl in my arms. Yes, another child added to the twins that Deux and I already have. Trust me, he is not happy about this at all...

xxxIt's that very unhappiness that has me fretfully writing in my diary so early in the morning. I was barely able to get any sleep last night, anxiously awaiting Deux's return, which I suppose is how he felt about my vanishing yesterday, really. But some of the things that he said... worried me. I can't help but think that this is just stage one of a drama that is just beginning to unfold. We've dealt with so many terrible things before now, I don't want to have to suffer through this, too...

xxxBut I cannot give her up. Chai is the most adorable little girl. She's sweet and affectionate and loving, and I'm not going to take her home just to give her back to that place again; it would be far too cruel. She doesn't even need to eat and, not only that, but doesn't seem to crave the sustenance, either. The only thing she really seems to want is love and affection... I couldn't suffer through saying goodbye to her, especially considering the torturous hands I would be putting her back into.

xxxSo I know that Deux is terribly mad, and I know that this might lead to one of the things I've dreaded most since returning from Ialu... but I can't just give up. I just hope that she realizes when she's older just how much I love her, even now...

Going the Distance: Chailai's first homeschooling lesson

The little abstinence girl had brought more tension to the house than she was really aware of. Honestly, the innocence of childhood was a blessing for the little girl, who would surely be heartbroken if she knew what she was doing to the family. It seemed like the only time that Trois and Deux had any time to themselves, it was time that they used fighting - almost always, it was over her.

Right now, the little girl was sitting in front of the television, as content as could be, hugging a small stuffed animal version of her mother in one arm, the plume at the end of her tail in the other. The thumb on her right hand was in her mouth, and she was sucking at it gently, green eyes affixed to the television screen, upon which her favourite movie in the whole wide world was playing: Hercules. She sung along to every song, seemed to know every line, and was always entranced to the very end of the movie. It was the only way to get her to let go of Trois for even a moment.

It was during the more romantic part of the movie that the serpent slipped in, curling to sit beside his daughter with a small chalkboard and a soft smile on his face.

"Hello zhere, le chaton. I was going to ask you something - are you too busy?" the male asked curiously, as his daughter's attention hadn't even flicked from the screen since he'd sat down. Without looking, she pulled her thumb from her mouth and retrieved the remote, pressing the pause button and finally turning to face her mother.

"No, I am not too busy, Mama. What did jou want to ask?" she questioned, one of her ears flicking down while the other stayed up, an obvious expression of curiosity.

"Well, jou see little one, zhe Facility expects me to teach jou jour alphabet and 'ow to count, just as I taught you much of 'ow to speak, oui? Zhat doesn't sound like too much work, does it?" Trois asked, laying down the chalkboard beside him.

"Ahm..." she mumbled softly, her other ear flicking back as well as she peered at the small blackboard and then to her mom, fidgeting a bit before sitting closer to the highlighter-coloured serpentine. "Oui, Mama. 'Ow do we start, zhen...?"

"Good, good," Trois stated with a smile, leaning down so he could write more easily on the blackboard from somewhere that his daughter would be able to see. It was good that she wasn't going to make this difficult, because that could have been a bit of a problem. Slowly, he wrote out a rather complicated 'one'. "Zhis is zhe number 'one'. It is zhe first number, oui?"

"Oui..." Chailai murmured, taking the chalk in her own hand and writing a shaky one of her own before smiling happily, handing the chalk back to her mother.

"Wonderful, le chaton, wonderful! Now, zhe next number is two...

...

"Onto zhe letters now,"
Trois started. The movie was playing in the background now, but Chai was too focused on what she was learning to be bothered paying too much attention to it. Trois wrote out one of his curvy A's, handing the chalk to his daughter. "Zhis is the first letter, 'A'. It makes zhe 'ay' or 'ah' sound. It's at zhe beginning of words like 'after' and 'at'."

"And 'and'!" Chailai piped up, slowly writing her own copy of the letter and giggling happily. Trois chuckled and ruffled her hair.

"Oui, 'and' starts with 'a', too. Now, zhe next letter is 'B'..."

Reading Practice ( Lirona x Copeka x Chailai )

Chailai toddled awkwardly through the small children's section, arms full of different fairytales. The little girl was trying to get herself from where she was to the little 'Grandma's Attic' area, where she would snuggle up with the pillows and read. Unfortunately, she'd gotten so many books that she was unable to see around them, leading the poor little greed child to wandering a bit aimlessly through the section, hoping that she guessed right.

Lira looked up from her book when she noticed the little girl stumbling along. Making sure Copeka was safe and asleep in his basket, she stood and smiled at the girl. "Hey there sugar. Want some help with all those books?"

Bright green eyes flicked up to the woman who spoke, and was certainly taller than her stack of books. Her eyes widened a bit at how pretty she was before she gave a sheepish smile, ears tipping back and her tail swishing softly. "Oui, ma'am, zhat would be very nice of jou, if it would not be too much trouble."

Lirona nearly squealed at the little girl's adorable accent and cute little manners. Taking the first few books, she carried them easily as they walked. "Oh no, baby, no trouble at all. You almost have a stack as big as you." She smiled warmly and ruffled the girl's hair. "So, do you have anyone to read these books to you, or should I become a storyteller as well?"

The small spawn had a much easier time carrying the rest of the load when part of it was taken from her, and she shuffled along quickly to keep up with the other, deep purple skirt shifting about her ankles. The toddler giggled slightly at the comment and the ruffling of her hair, crossing her green eyes to try and make sure that her crown didn't fall off.

"Oh no, it is okay. I am just learning 'ow to read, so I was going to read zhem myself in zhe little attic-place," Chai replied cheerily, skipping forward a bit to catch up, tail flicking slightly behind her, helping the little kitten keep her balance.

Every little thing the girlie did just made her seem more and more cute to Lira, a sentiment she expressed with a quiet squeal. "Alright, that sounds good. If you want to, you could practice by helping me read to my baby." She indicated the sleeping boy. "He's dozy now, but he loves stories. What do you think?"

Chailai looked a little surprise when the baby was brought up, her ears flicking gently. The girl stood on her tiptoes, peering into the little baby basket and smiling softly, nodding at the older woman as they walked along, finally headed in the right direction. "Oui, ma'm. I wouldn't mind ready to 'im if jou would like. It is zhe least I could do!"

"Wonderful," beamed Lira. "I'll just wake him up. He might be a little fussy, but he's super sweet, I promise." She tickled his tummy gently, mumbling to wake him up before turning back to the girl. "He's Copeka, and I'm Lira. What's your name, sweetie?"

Copeka whined sadly when he was tickled, a quiet sob slipping past his lips. His balled up fists rubbed at his cheeks, legs kicking out from beneath their blanket at Lira's hands, as though trying to make her leave him alone. The little lust boy whimpered softly before he started to quietly cry in the basket, faulty little lungs causing every inhale to be a ragged, rather scary little gasp.

Chailai smiled and nodded a few times, putting down her books when they reached the little attic place, looking through them for something that she wanted to read first. When the little one started crying, however, her ears perked straight upright, twitching softly. She stepped over toward the basket, leaning down beside it before peeking up sadly at the woman. "Is somezhing wrong? Is 'e sick? Oh, my name is Chailai. Princess Chailai Daciana Lawrence zhe First."

Lira cooed softly and offered her son her fingers to cling on, Jake stroking his head softly. She raised her eyebrows at the girl's name, but reasoned that it was just a child's game and played along. "What a lovely name, princess." She smiled a little sadly and shrugged. "A little. He's a sick baby, he was born a little early. But he's okay, don't worry."

Copeka cried softly, clinging to the fingers that were offered to him and continuing to fuss. He'd been quite content to stay asleep and was certainly not ready to wake up yet! Waking up meant that he felt heavy and sleepy and hungry and... mmmph! He wanted sleeps, not wakes!! "Maaaa...!" he cried pitifully, shoving his face against the fingers and sniffling as his small body trembled.

Chailai hovered sadly, knitting her fingers and fidgeting nervously. Her tail wrapped around her body and she clung onto it, idly running her fingertips through the brown tuft at the end of it. "A-are jou sure...? 'E seems very sad..." the young girl mumbled nervously, biting softly at her lips, ears twitching softly.

"Aw, baby..." cooed Lira softly as her baby fussed, rocking him gently in her arms. At first she had thought that he was merely fussing to fuss, but as he continued she began to gnaw her lip in worry. "Hm, maybe you're right..." With a nervous smile, she kissed his forehead and cuddled him affectionately. "Sh, no 'Peka baby, it's okay. Look sweetheart, this cutie is gonna read a story to you, baby boy..." She rocked him anxiously. She wished he would stop crying so he could get read to...

The baby didn't even cheer up when he was lifted from his basket, continuing to fuss, kicking his legs and wiggling his other limbs, crying getting a bit stronger now that he was more awake. He babbled sadly despite the kiss, tail flicking twitchily. "Naa!! Mamama!!" he cried out, curling against his mother's chest in a tight little ball and continuing his crying.

Chailai twisted her tail between her hands, her own green eyes tearing up. She glanced up toward the mother, ears tipped back against her hair as she bit softly at her own lip. "I-I'm sorry 'e is so sad... is... is it my fault? Maybe 'e is afraid...?"

Lira was taken aback by how persistently upset her baby was being, and rocked him reflexively while she tried to think. She had heard of children, infants especially, crying for no reason, but seeing as Copeka hadn't done that yet, she had sort of assumed that he... Wouldn't. Obviously, she had been naive. She smiled nervously at Chai, shrugging one shoulder as she rocked. "No, sugar, it's not your fault. Maybe he's hungry...?" She quickly dug up his bottle and offered it to him hopefully. "Hungry, ' Peka baby?"

Into the Woods... ( Chailai x Deux )

Deux had never been so tense in his life. Every muscle in his body, from his furrowed eyebrows to his toes clenching the inside of his sneakers, was wound up tighter than a spring and filled with twice as much potential explosive energy. He couldn't believe he was doing this, and yet... And yet he was doing it, and he certainly didn't feel bad yet. Every so often his eyes flicked quickly to the girl bundled up in the front seat of his pick-up truck, as if checking for signs of suspicion. Of course, he knew that if he did that too much, the girl would become suspicious, so he merely flicked his cigarette out the window, immediately lighting up another one. He'd been smoking nonstop since he'd picked Chailai up, the adrenaline almost too much for him to bear without shrieking.

Once he had taken them into the woods for a good hour, he pulled off onto the side, parking viciously. Without a word, he unbuckled his seat and went around to open Chailai's door. "'Ere we are, Chai. Let's get down now." Oh so carefully, he picked her up and placed her down next to him, making sure that she didn't accidentally notice the gun hidden in the back of his jeans.

It would be on a Saturday that you open your mail box (if you have one) and notice there is a rather thick envelope stuffed in there. There is no postage stamp and a very vague return address. But you recognize the font and the company's name. 'Seven of Seven Inc' scrawled in majestic font across the upper left hand corner. As you open it, you may strangely find yourself drawn to the letter, there is a mass of notes inside. They read as follows:

Letter
Congratulations! You have managed to succeed in raising your child. (IE: Not killing him or her or getting killed yourself. Haha we kid of course.) We would like an update from you on the following:

Guardians Name:
Child's Name:
Sin:
Virtue:
Gender:
Current Attitude:
Likes:
Dislikes:
Any abnormal growths: (if any, example: Feathers molting, horns growing larger, scars )
Current hair style:
Current clothing preferences:
Dominant celestial trait: (The sin or virtue)

Please summarize in your own words how difficult or easy it was taking care of your child. Did you manage to care for them in a kindly fashion? Or were you forced to discipline them?
As well do not be alarmed if you suddenly find your child achieving a massive growth spurt in the next little while. We are finding that the children from our facility have strange growing patterns and are rather unpredictable. Although please let us know if anything unexpected occurs.

Sincerely the technicians from Seven of Seven Inc.

Ps. Please just leave your letter back in your mail box one you have completed it our courier will pick it up.

Thank you.

You would notice the letter seems overly friendly...strange since the scientist were so ...cold before.

(Just take the from Guardians name to Dominant Celestial trait and pm it to the mule, the summarization doesn't have to be long just have fun with it.)
