Solo Birthdays and Holidays Christmas was something Zirconia had been looking forward to, oddly enough. It was unexpected; She had never been especially excited for holidays when they rolled around and after the unpleasant and jarring year she was expecting this coming together style day with tacky décor to be almost dreaded, not anticipated.
Still, the Christmas tree went up in the Connolly home and she found herself counting down the days. There would be presents. Probably shiny presents. And food. Lots of food. Maybe visiting people she actually cared about. Yup, everything was gearing up to—
…Nothing.
She had eventually become aware of the fact that decorating was all the Christmas spirit that was going to happen. As expected, Zia’s family was scattered for the holiday and other than the fact that the flavored coffee Zia guzzled on a daily basis was holiday themed it really didn’t seem that different from a normal day. Zirconia at least wanted to stalk around other BMC-ers but that wasn’t going to happen since her host seemed fairly intent on not breaking tradition and keeping to herself. Instead Zia used winter break to haul a** on her missed work since her grades had started tanking ever since she started moonlighting as a guardian cat, a break in the monotony only to leave cards for the neighbors in their mailboxes, the one in the Gallo’s accompanied by a small giftbox she was sure his mom would pass along to him. One of these days she’d have time to see friends again.
But it wasn’t totally lonely. As per tradition Zee had dinner with her dad. Not a cozy holiday meal at home, it was in a nice restaurant with dim lighting and quiet music, but they were actually exchanging idle conversation and laughing quietly until it was actually enjoyable.
But then he changed his tone and cleared his throat and wiped the steak sauce from his chin, all signs he was about to change the conversation from idle chitchat to something that mattered. “I pulled some strings and… Merry Christmas.” That was all he said as he pulled an envelope from his pocket and slid it across the table. Zia eagerly pried the stuffed thing open, expecting her yearly card and cash she always got from him. The card was there but the cash had been replaced by several folded papers. She frowned and shifted through them, reading the information over and over until it finally sunk in. “You got me a job?” Well, she did ask him if he could use his connections to score her one… about a year ago, with a stock broker or marketing firm as an intern maybe or any entry level shlock to get her foot in the door with the place she wanted to make a career out of. This was… a little off. Especially since it looked like she was going to be the personal employee of one of his drinking buddies, not an actual company or firm.
“Yup. This guy’s real particular about his secretaries, too, you’re pretty lucky,” He said matter of factly, obviously rather pleased with himself that he’d managed to sweep down this act of generosity from above.
Zia clutched the papers as repressed anger built up inside her, slowly, and nearly undetectable from the outside. ‘Secretary’ in her father’s language was code for ‘Sit here, get coffee, look pretty, and be good. Women don’t belong anywhere else in the office.’ She often ignored that philosophy, making excuses for him like he was raised in a different time and couldn’t be blamed. But she also never thought he meant it applied to her too. Not her; She was special, wasn’t she? The exception to the rule, or something? He had three sons and none had been as militant as following in his footsteps as she was. Wasn’t that worth a little consideration?!
“Thanks, daddy… it’s great. I can’t wait to start,” She said, trying her hardest to smile sincerely. He didn’t even seem to notice and went back to idle chitchat and mutilating the overpriced steak in front of him. It wouldn’t be later that she started to wonder how she was going to balance next semester, a job, and the BMC without completely collapsing.

Zia’s birthday was even more uneventful than Christmas, though that was a yearly thing too. She didn’t even usually tell anyone; It was just another annoyance between Christmas and New Years. Zirconia was starting to realize how suffocating the December month was. She would kill for any kind of excitement by now instead of Zia wallowing and pretending not to wallow and then wallowing some more.
On the other hand, Zia was hoping her father would at least give her the Christmas money that he’d neglected in favor of that ‘job’. She’d already started, if only on her second day and it was unpleasant. Whether or not a percentage of that unpleasantness was because she had expected it to be was beyond her perception and she just assumed it was because she spent time she sorely needed delivering lunch and coffees and answering his phone all while enduring orders that didn’t make sense, misplaced anger, and the occasional very odd phone call. But the worst part was probably the time thing. She suddenly felt like there weren’t enough hours in the day, and she felt like every wasted hour was one that could’ve been used for something productive or meaningful.
On the plus side, the coming semester had a decrease in the class load. ISS meetings quickly became a way for both Zia and Zirconia to maintain their sanity and were fervently looked forward to. Routine was reformed, and a new kind of normalcy surfaced. It wasn’t perfect by any means but it was a form of comfort.
The days melded. January came, and then it was gone. February almost faded into obscurity except for the 14th signified another round of giving gifts, this time of candy, and there was a day of wantonly bestowing them on any friend or classmate to cross her path, as well as another dropped in the mailboxes of closer friends she was too absentee to catch. Normally she didn’t bother if she didn’t happen to see them but this was different. This ritual was clung to with more force this year, like she desperately needed to remind them that she was still alive.
