Solo - Weak Moment
As the rain continued to pour outside, Mags continued to sit inside her apartment, a solemn expression drawn across her face. The sound of water pelting the window would normally lull the young woman to sleep, a peaceful lullaby from nature. But not tonight - no, she had far too many thoughts going on in her mind to sleep.
She'd managed to hobble her way into the bathroom, strip down and shower off the remaining dirt and grime covering her, avoiding dampening the wraps and bandages Dana had been kind enough to come over and assist with. The one thing she couldn't scrub off, though, was the shame of knowing she'd finally been defeated in battle for the first time. in a battle that counted, for once.
The thought irked her more than she'd have liked. After the shower, she'd managed to hop over the remains of her dirty clothes, ignoring them for now and instead focused on the bottle of rum still sitting on the counter top. She'd poured herself a tall glass and resumed her spot on the couch to continue her brooding.
There had been several times where she'd been out-wrassled by friends on the farm. She wasn't the strongest, no, but she'd been the strongest gal she'd ever known of. She'd whooped plenty of fellas and gals alike (though, mostly fellas). Mags was downright rough in a fight. But this was a fight that had mattered - a fight that had risked lives. A fight that could have actually killed her, not just left her roughed up and bruised.
The rum stung as she downed it, the burn making its way down her throat into her empty stomach. It wasn't long for the warm feeling to ignite her insides, but comfort didn't come with it, this time. Just cold, angry realization. She hadn't been strong enough to beat him. She'd tried, she'd given it her best shot, kicking and punching and throwing her weight onto him, only to be shoved off by his power - which was far too similar to her own for her to be comfortable. He was better than she was.
What was the point of having super powers if you couldn't even manage to beat a boy with 'em? She wasn't smart, she wasn't the brains of the duo. Hell, she couldn't do a strategy, she couldn't be witty - the only thing she was good for was her strength and she couldn't even do that, now?
What if Dan had been there?
The thought sent a shiver down her spine. What if Dorado had been the one subjected to the attack...Duhr wouldn't have been able to protect her. Duhr wouldn't have been able to win.
The thought of losing her best friend due to her own failure was too much. The glass went sailing - flying - through the air until it made contact against the wall, splintering into hundreds of tiny shards that rained down onto the carpet.
She was weak and that wasn't acceptable.

Solo - Happy Birthday to Me (WC: 526)
Dec 21, 2015
The day had started like any other day.
Well, like any other day off from work, at least.
She hadn't understood why her boss had insisted on not coming in to work today, it wasn't like it was a big deal or nothin'. Mags knew she was just tryin' to be nice and all, but sometimes that niceness didn't help the situation. If anything, going to work would help distract her from the fact that today was, once again, the anniversary of her birthday. Twenty-two. Two decades and two years and once again, the day had fallen upon her with no one else around to help her celebrate it.
Celebratin' it was stupid, anyhow. What was the point?
For a usually perky girl, the mood had been somber since the moment she'd woken up. She'd laid in bed for as long as her body could stand it, but she was still up before ten. Tossing and turning, a lanky arm turned to look at the clock on the nightstand. Damn, not even noon yet.
What was she going to do with the day?
Making her way to the living room, she did what any other respectable girl would do, having nothing to do or no one to spend her birthday with. Couch veggin'. Yet, while lounging on the couch, she soon discovered there was nothing on the television worth watching. Soap operas got to be too confusing to follow, Jerry Springer had some nuts fightin' about stupid stuff and the news was never anything nice to hear about.
Glancing over towards the kitchen, she debated if it was worth leaving her comfortable spot to find some grub to gnaw on. There were old waffles in the fridge, but she had a feelin' they'd be on the edge of stale by this point. A package of lunch meat, some cheese slices maybe.
Yeah, she could use a sandwich, she guessed.
A few minutes later and said sandwich was made, just in time for a cheery, bright-sounding Christmas movie to start on the television. Christmas was less than a week away, but it didn't feel like Christmas. The apartment wasn't decorated, her mood wasn't soaring with cheer and goodwill.
Biting into the sandwich, she shrugged to herself. Ah, well.
Dan was busy with her family, she knew. Mags couldn't fault her best friend for spending time with her loved ones - that's what you were supposed to do, during the holiday season. It was just unfortunate luck for Mags that she no longer had that option in life.
Man, she missed Pa somethin' fierce, this time of year.
Landing back on the couch, she leaned over and grabbed for the remote, pumping up the volume on the TV in attempts to drown her sorrows with some cheerful music.
All at once, a loud screech and the sound of a car ramming into something echoed through the apartment complex. At the same time, the lights completely went out, the TV dead. Guess some drunk hit a pole again. Figures, just her luck.
"Happy Birthday to me," she sighed slowly, before taking another bite of her baloney sandwich, surrounded by darkness.

Solo - The Plan (WC: 57 cool
Mags had a plan.
This Cadeus fella, he was up to no good.
She didn't have proof, but she was gonna get it.
Which was why she currently stood in the middle of Eli's Liquor Emporium, the rather seedy shop down the street from her less than stellar apartment complex. The bars on the windows didn't bother her, neither did the half-busted neon sign that flickered above her head as she'd walked through the door. The young woman might have noticed the rough looking group of guys lingering throughout the other aisles of the store, but if she did, she didn't appear to care.
Her focus - no - her mission was to find some good 'ol fashion Jack Daniels for the occasion. She'd contemplated brewin' up her family's moonshine recipe, but on such short notice, she wasn't sure if she could get it up to snuff before it was time to uncork it.
So here she was, perusing through the shelves with one hand as her other clutched the wad of singles she'd been saving from her tips. It was supposed to be going to her rainy day fund but this was clearly an Emergency and when Emergencies happened, it was worth diggin' into her savings jar.
Finding the tallest bottle she could, Mags picked it up and looked at the price.
She put it down and instead, picked up the second tallest bottle.
At the register, she uncrumpled her wad of dollar bills, straightening out the creases as best she could with her palm before slapping them down on the counter and sliding them over to the clerk, along with her ID.
Not that he asked to see it, she just wanted to make sure she followed proper protocol 'n all.
The clerk seemed indifferent, pretending to glance over the blonde's driver license as he took her money, re-straightening the cash before it disappeared into his register. The bottle was promptly (and carelessly) shoved into a brown paper sack, then handed back over to her.
This was it.
Her plan was now being set into motion.
She felt like one of those spies from the fancy movies, like James Bond or Tom Impossible or whatever his name was, the short fella. When she'd whispered her idea to Troy, one of the only sensible sailor scouts she'd seen in the whole bunch of 'em, he had agreed to the endeavor, taking on just as much risk as she was. Biting her lip, she debated on telling Dorado about it. Mags knew her best friend was suspicious of the alien just as much as she was (maybe even more), but Mags was also scared of what this unknown fella could actually do, once he revealed his true intentions. And powers. That was the part that worried her the most - once he got all that energy that the others were blindly collecting for him, what was he going to do? And what would he do to her, if her plan went South?
Yeah, she still wasn't sure if Dan would like her scheme at all.
Glancing at her watch, she did the math in her head. There was an hour or so before they were supposed to meet - just enough time to acquire the second part of her operation.
Her chin raised high and a determined look on her face, Margaret Butler made her way to the nearest Waffle House.
She'd figure out his secret plan, she just knew she would!
