It was another sleepless evening in the city.
Mags had finished her shift at the Waffle House around midnight, but there was no desire to go home. Maybe it was all the coffee she'd had during her breaks or the whipped cream she'd snuck with her lunch (waffles, naturally) but tiredness had not set in for the young woman yet.
So, instead, Sailor Duhr now sat atop one of the many closed shops of the local strip mall, feet dangling over the edge, occasionally kicking, as she munched on some of her leftover treats in the brown bag that lay beside her.
The stars were bright, the evening was quiet....well, save for the loud chewing, of course. It seemed it would be yet another calm evening, after all.

Hadaya was enjoying his life as a guardian, though he had plenty of anxiety about doing it right. What if he failed? What if he was not good enough? What if he fell down at the wrong time and missed something important?
So many dangers.
And always the ones he did not expect. Those were the worst, and basically made up a large portion of his day to day. He thought maybe he would get used to being clumsy and having incredibly bad luck.
Nope.
Padding along on his stumpy legs, not getting very far very quickly, he looked around when he felt the aura of a senshi near-ish by. They were always the best auras to feel, and he was delighted immediately, bouncing on his paws and moving into what passed for a run. It was closer to a shuffle, really.
Did he smell food?
Hitting the breaks a little too late, Hadaya bumped lightly into the wall, all the way down at the bottom of the building. He looked up, lifting up onto his back feet and putting one paw on the building for balance, squinting to see the source of the aura (and the smell), though he could only see feet when they swung.
Whining softly, he sat back on his haunches and considered his options. There was no way he could get up there, with his uselessly short limbs and complete lack of jumping skill, and the chances of her seeing him down here were very, very low. Really, he only had one choice.
Meowing sadly it was.

Thankfully for the cat's sake, Sailor Duhr preferred to savor the flavor of old waffles, taking her time between chews and enough space in between those moments of chewing to catch the faint sound of a distant meoooooooow.
Derp?
Now on alert for the meow's owner, she swallowed her bite and glanced around. Nothing on the rooftops...down to the shops across the street....no, nothing there either. Where the heck...
Scooting forward, she looked down between her dangling legs and finally found the source of the distressed callings. It wasn't Derp at all, but still an equally friendly looking, slightly pudgier feline.
"Well hey there, little fella! Want some waffles too?" Not one to starve poor little kittens, regardless if they looked like they needed additional food or not, she quickly tore off some bits of her current snack and dropped them off the side of the building. Down the pieces rained, the soft bread plopping gently on the sidewalk.
It hadn't occurred to her in the slightest that, like Derp, this was no regular kitty cat calling out to her.

Waffles?!
Oh God, yes.
"I would love some waffles, please! Thank you! Please!" he whined, stretching up on his tippy toes now, as if that would help get him closer to the food. It occurred to him that he probably had not had any food in an hour, maybe two, which meant he was probably going to die soon. He had his front paws on the side of the building again, looking up at the impossible distance mournfully.
Then the food started raining down, and he meowed eagerly, pushing away from the wall, which only resulted in him flopping backwards and having to kick his feet mightily to get back over. He finally managed to get all four paws on the floor, though, and skittered to collect the fallen waffle pieces.
Mouth full of all the pieces she had dropped down for him, he looked back up, purring contentedly.
"FANK YOUPH!"

She blinked. Once. Twice. Three times before she moved one glove up to rub against her baby blues, not that rubbing her eyes would change the fact that, once again, a cat that she had decided to feed began talking to her.
Grabbing her paper bag (as she wouldn't dare forget her midnight snack), she scooted further down and off the ledge of the roof completely. Had she been any other senshi, there might have been a flourish and a graceful landing, but Sailor Duhr was anything but graceful.
Thankfully, however, she managed to land both feet on the ground with a loud THUD, but she didn't lose her balance (this time), not like her new pudgy companion had only moments earlier.
"What in the heck is up with y'all city cats? Do all of y'all talk?" Wait. If they all talked, then they'd have to be Guardians, right?
She clarified her question. "Are all of y'all Guardians, or somethin'?"
Bending down, she sat on the back of her heels in a stooped position, unable to keep from smiling as she watched the fat little guy snarf up the waffle bits. Reaching in to her bag, she split another waffle, tossing half his way while munching on the other part, herself.

Hadaya watched her drop down, but was still startled by her landing, nearly choking on the remains of his mouthful of delicious food. The only thing that stopped him from spitting it out in his effort to catch a breath was the fact that it was delicious food and thus probably more precious than his own life.
He survived without choking, anyway, so he at least got to finish his little snack.
"City cats? No, no! I'm a Mauvian! I'm a guardian cat! We help you guys! Yeah!" She had guessed what he was saying, but still. He moved toward her, giving her a hearty rub against her leg, mostly her ankle, in thanks for the food and the attention. Plus, it was his only real way of saying hello properly.
He didn't want to be rude.
"Not all cats are Guardians here, uhm. Just the ones that talk, I guess! Oh and have these stars." he tilted his forehead so she could see the one on his forehead, lifting himself up on his back feet to get higher, and thus closer. The tossed waffle caught his attention, then, and he flailed his front paws wildly in an effort to catch it. The sudden burst of excitement knocked him off balance, and he ended up flopping over fluffily onto his back, like a turtle.
Not the best position for a tubby tabby.
"Oh. Uhm. I'm Hadaya!" he called, as he wiggled to right himself. "It's nice to meet you!"

She gave the rest of her snack a thoughtful chew as she watched the tubby fella squirm around as he chatted. He was a cute lil thing, but then again, her vision could always be clouded with the biased approval of a fellow waffle lover.
But Mauvians, huh? She wasn't sure if that was a country or a planet - judging by the fact he dealt with the world of sailor scouts, she'd assume a planet of sorts. Only seemed natural and all. But it made a lot more sense, them bein' aliens instead of normal, non-talking cats. And now that she knew to look for forehead stars, it'd be easier for her to differentiate.
"Nice to meet yew. Ah'm Duhr." She paused, debating helping him flip his fat little body over, but the Guardian seemed to know how to handle himself as he rolled himself over. Must have been in similar circumstances before, she'd warrant. Instead, she continued to rock back and forth on her heels, enjoying the adorableness presented in front of her. After all, how many times could she pause from a patrol to have a proper conversation with a cat?
"Ah work with tornadoes. Can help folks too, Ah reckon, but my aim hasn't been the best since I started this gig. Haven't helped too many Guardians - yer only the second one Ah've ever met. How many of y'all are there?"

"Duhr?!??!??!"
That was perhaps the greatest name he had ever heard. He looked thoroughly embarrassed that he had let his surprise come out in so loud and outburst-y a a way, but his genuine delight could not be contained. It was very similar to a sound a lot of folks, at least the meaner, senshi-of-danger-y ones, made at him and that odd familiarity made him feel instant kinship with her.
Was that a silly reason to bond with someone? He did not really consider it: all he knew was she had given him delightful food, and now her name was a wonderful relief to hear because it told him the sound was actually a good thing. He had assumed Chaonis was teasing him whenever he made it, but now someone had that name, and they were so far awesome!
So how could it be bad?
"Tornadoes? Uhm. Wha...what do you mean? Oh! you haven't met many guardian cats? Me either! Uhm. I'm Hadaya! Oh, I said that already. Well. Uh. I think there are a lot of us out there but to be honest I'm still trying to... figure it all out, too. I'm not a very good guardian cat, really, but I'm learning!"

Blue eyes blinked at his outburst, but the sailor scout wasn't deterred. Maybe he knew about her planet, then, if he was actin' so excited?
That made one of them, at least.
She didn't know the first thing about her home planet. All she knew was one day, a cat crossed her path and (after a meal of waffles, ironically) told her she was a magical girl, a soldier of the White Moon by the name of Sailor Duhr. The notion of past lives confused her, so she preferred not to bother thinkin' about it. No sense in dwelling on the past, especially if it was a past she didn't even know anything about! She'd leave that to cats and princesses and keep working on fighting evil - at least she was good at that part!
"Ya like waffles and know how to talk, so Ah'd say yer off to a great start, Hadaya."
She didn't know the first thing about what made a Guardian cat good, but he was able to find her, after all, so THAT was a great sign, right? "As long as you can spot a scout and stay out of trouble, Ah think yew'll go pretty far. Ah mean, yew found me, didn't ya? That's great scoutin' work!"

"Oh, I'm pretty good at spotting senshi! It's just the staying out of trouble thing I can't seem to do right. Well, it's not JUST that... there are plenty of things I don't do right!"
He paused, realizing he sounded oddly proud of that, but that was not what he meant to imply. He was a bit of a fail face, all told, and that was fine by him most of the time. He was sweet, true enough, and he certainly tried as hard as he could. It just often resulted in things going a little off, and never quite to plan. He was also just a bit too clumsy for his own good.
But they all had their failings, right?
He just happened to have quite a few of them.
"Well, you're very nice, and I'm really glad to have met you!" Plus, waffles, "are you out on patrol or just hanging out? I didn't steal your dinner, did I?"

Lithiasaur sorry, this felt like a good opportunity for Duhr to "sense" the meta tugging. I can edit if you'd rather not go that route, just let me know! "Dinner? Nah, Ah can get 'em whenever, since Ah work at the Waffle Hou.."
She trailed off, suddenly realizing she was probably revealing too much information from her civilian life. But really, what harm was it in telling a cat? The Guardian seemed like a pretty trustworthy little fella, all in all.
One hand dug into the bag, pulling out the last waffle. It was true, she'd already had a few extras before leaving work, so there was no resentment in offering the last one to the tubby kitty. As she leaned down, however, a sudden wave of nausea and dread came over her, causing her to drop the fluffy oval.
Her skin grew clammy, the feeling quickly growing overwhelming. It was some sort of power, emanating from deeper within the city. The signature wasn't anything like she'd felt, good guy or bad. Different, maybe, but she wasn't certain it was in any good sense of the word. It tugged at her, enticing her to investigate further.
Straightening up, she glanced down the empty sidewalk, concern now etched on her formerly carefree expression.
"I think trouble may have found us this time, little guy. Did you feel that?"

Hadaya's ears flattened against his head, looking at her frowning. He had felt whatever that strange pulse was, and had not liked a moment of it. A scared little guy at the best of times, he found himself shaking and shrinking down into himself in an effort to be as small and unnoticeable as possible. If he had a tail, it probably would have been almost touching the ground in fear, but he did not even have the slightest of nubs.
"I... I did... I should... I think I should find Navi... I should... I should go home," he eeped out.
Whatever it was, he wanted to get away from it. He wanted to get home to his beloved senshi and hide in her arms, or better yet, get them both hidden safely behind Camelot and his big shield to keep them from any possible harm at all. Which he was pretty sure was what would come from whatever that feeling had been, because why wouldn't it?
New things were always scary.
"I... I'm sorry!" he mewed, skittering away as fast as his stubby little legs would carry him. Was he abandoning a senshi when there might be something bad out there? He didn't want to think of it, knowing that would be the ultimate failure of a guardian cat. But his instincts told him to run, and he had a lot of trouble going against that impulse. He wasn't... brave. He didn't know how to be.
But he would be carrying the guilt of this choice for some time, no matter what happened. His imagination always ran a lot faster than he did.
