~Azrael's Arrival~

Halloween had arrived within the Gaian realm with kids in costumes running around and trick-or-treating. One would even claim to see Jack running around, giving gifts in exchange for the candy brought to them. Within the Ashanti household, there was seemingly only one person inside, scaring the daylights out of the older children that came up to the house and handing out candy at the same time.

The other three, a boy by the name of Cody and a girl named Aenira led by Shadai, Cody's guardian, were touring the varying neighborhoods collecting the delicious sweets that were being handed out. Shadai wasn't exactly sure why she was letting Cody choose the route they went, and subsequently by a spooky graveyard, but she let him. Aenira just skipped along, unaware of the uneasiness within the adult. That is, until she spotted a flash of orange hair.

"Ooh... Pum'kin..." Aenira giggled, darting into the graveyard and over to where the small pumpkin was floating. "Hello there. You seem like someone in need of a wish. I'll grant you one, on one condition; you give me that bag of candy you have," the demon spoke, stepping out from behind the tree, a mischievous smirk on his face.

"Wish? Wassat?" Aenira asked, unaware of Cody and Shadai slowly approaching the two. "It's a magical way of making things happen," the boy replied, the grin never leaving his face. "Ooh! I wan's t' be a pwincess!" she giggled, twirling in her little princess outfit. The boy just frowned as the notepad he had gotten out earlier suddenly closed. "Can't do that. Too big of a wish. Something smaller, perhaps? Say... a princess outfit? Or maybe a magic wand?" he asked, not bothering to mention that he thought she might actually be a princess.

"Ooh! I know! I want t' have a cookie!" Aenira gasped, grinning happily as she quickly changed her interests. The boy just shook his head, writing down the wish onto the notepad and leaving a spot for what appeared to be a signature. "Sign here, then I'll get your candy bag and you will get a cook-"

"No! Want cookie, no give up candy!" Aenira gasped, clutching onto her bag of candy tightly. The boy just sighed. He hated it when the children decided to oppose him. "Aenira? Aenira where are you?" came the sound of a worried voice. Aenira just grinned and took the boy's hand. "I know! You go twick-o-tweating wiff us! Den you's has candy and I has coowkie! Dat good?" she asked, dragging the boy along and surprising him with her strength.

Before the boy could respond, they had exited the cemetery and ran straight into Shadai and Cody. "Aenira! Thank god you're alright! Don't run off on us like that again! Your mother would kill me if anything happened to you," Shadai gasped, hugging the girl tightly while Cody went off to inspect the demon boy.

"You smell funny. What are you?" Cody asked, prodding at the orange haired boy. Bright orange eyes flicked over to the greed spawn irritably, unamused. "Pumpkin demon. You?" he asked, shutting the notepad and shoving it and the bat-shaped pen back into his pocket. "Greed 'nd patience mix from facility. Wha's your name? I'm Cody," the child replied, standing back a bit.

"And where are your parents? You shouldn't be out here alone," Shadai commented, worried about his safety. "Don't have parents and I'm fine. Wait... you look like... This your name?" the boy asked, pulling out a scroll with the name 'Shadai Ashanti' on it from his pocket. Shadai just blinked and took the scroll, raising an eyebrow at what it said. "Well... Apparently I'm your new guardian... I suppose you don't have a name," she replied, wondering just how many children were going to be thrust into her hands without so much as a reason as to why.

"Azrael!" Aenira piped up, grinning at the name. Both Shadai and Cody stared at her, wondering what she meant and hoped for some sort of explanation. "Momma told me a stowy 'bout person named Azwael 'nd he lives in a gwaveyard an' I found 'im here so he mus' be Azwael!" the girl explained, giggling happily as she latched onto his leg. The orange-haired boy just grinned, tail flicking back and forth happily. "I like that name, Azrael," he replied, gently patting Aenira's head.

"Well... welcome to the family Azrael. Looks like you have a new brother Cody," Shadai said, turning to the greed spawn who looked extremely upset at the prospect of another child running through the house. "Great. Can we keep going? Ends soon," Cody replied, crossing his arms across his chest. Shadai just sighed and straightened up, already trying to figure out how they were going to handle yet another person within their slowly-shrinking home. "Sure. Want to come trick-or-treating with us, Azrael?" the egyptian asked, getting a nod from the demon boy and they were soon off again with another addition to the Ashanti family.

~Stealing Opportunities Part 1~

“You ******** brat! I’ve told you once, I’ve told you a thousand times, STAY OUT OF MY GODDAMN ROOM!!” Ary snarled, eyes flashing dangerously in the slowly dimming light. Outside, the sun was quickly setting as the fateful hour of seven approached to turn the snow a fiery red-orange and finally a dark gray as it completely disappeared over the horizon. Neither one truly noticed the fangs that slowly slid into view or that the temperature was steadily dropping. Neither one flinched or moved as frost crept over the windows, causing them to crackle and creak.

“b***h, I didn’t TOUCH your damned stuff!” Cody roared, stepping forward aggressively. As he moved, something white and glittery shifted from his hand and into his pocket, only remaining in view for the briefest of moments. He had to be quicker than her; he was the ******** king of thieves! And what was she? Brute force or, as per a few months ago, the melee teacher at the facility he loathed with ever fiber in his body. Yet, neither one dared move an inch as the door to Aenira’s room slowly creaked open.

“Mommy?” Aenira asked sleepily, rubbing her purple eyes tiredly until she got enough of a view of the hallway. The clawed hand froze and all traces of sleep vanished, replaced by horror, worry, and tears filling her eyes. Not again! Momma and Co-dee shouldn’t fight! Fighting was bad!

It’s nothing ‘Nira, go back to bed,” Arytiss replied calmly and soothingly, voice completely the opposite that it had been all of a minute ago. She didn’t move from the fighting stance she had fallen into, eyes still blazing with anger at the younger spawn at the other end of the hallway who had stolen… well, if it was traced back to her she wouldn’t have much choice in what would happen next. The female seriously doubted Aenira would be entirely too pleased by the new living arrangements and sudden stripping of friends and most, if not all, of humanity. She exhaled a soft sigh as the fateful sniffles emerged from her daughter. Great, first Cody stole her most secretive item and now Aenira’s going to throw a fit and possibly destroy the house.

“Nothing? Really? I’ve been sitting here for a while watching you two shout an’ I’m jus’ waitin’ for a fight or somethin’,” Azrael commented, grinning wickedly. The shouting matches weren’t all that interesting, it was when their fight became physical that the true entertainment arose. Ary didn’t look it, but she could probably pick up both Cody AND Shadai and throw them across the room. Cody, on the other hand, was fast and took hits well by rolling off them and deflecting most of the power behind it. The fights were interesting to watch, to say the least.

“Shut your damned face Azrael,” Cody growled, blue-green eyes flashing dangerously even though they never left Ary. He knew she was backed into a corner, literally, and was possibly even more dangerous than had it been the other way around location-wise. He was fortunate having the stairs next to him and providing an easy, and quick, escape if needed. Even though he could hold up well enough against Ary, he was no match when she actually TRIED to hurt him. Cody had to admit though, Azrael was right in saying they had been yelling for a while. It had been about ten minutes of shouting and angry cursing and a surprise that Aenira had remained asleep for so long.

“Cody! Don’t you dare talk to your brother like that! I want you to apologize and return what-,” Shadai started, quickly being cut off by the pink-haired spawn.

“It’s mine! It’s mine and that b***h can’t have it!!” Cody roared, suddenly turning and thundering down the stairs. Ary followed shortly after, looking like an enraged bull as it went after a red cape. Cody mused for the briefest of moments that she might actually be foaming at the mouth; it was an amusing thought, to say the least. He still hadn’t the foggiest idea why Ary was so determined to get the item back. She had never been this pissed off with his other stealing escapades.

“CODY! Get your damned a** back here!” Arytiss roared as she leapt over the banister and to the ground below while just barely missing the greed-spawn. The panic in her voice was just barely audible during their fight to the door, each yelling out curses and insults at an astounding rate. She couldn’t let him leave! He would reveal her secret and things would go downhill immediately and quickly, she was absolutely sure of it.

Yet, fate didn’t seem to be on her side as the pink-haired spawn raced out the door and slammed it in her face. By the time she had wrenched it open again, Cody had seemingly vanished into thin air. A soft, sorrowful wail began, echoing around the house as the door was shut once again. Sighing, Ary headed up the stairs to comfort the girl while avoiding the various small objects that were flung around. Someday, that girl had to learn control and to not let her wind powers go about and wreak havoc on the house and surrounding areas whenever she was upset.

Azrael just shook his head in disappointment, wishing that they had at least done SOMETHING in the form of physical violence. Cody was such a coward. While the adults ran off to comfort Aenira before she trashed the house for the millionth time, he moved towards the window in hopes that his brother would return soon. Hey, he may think he was the king of the world but Cody was still cool and his brother and said spawn NEVER ran out of the house like that. A harsh feeling of dread formed in the pit of his stomach. Something was going to happen, and it wouldn’t be pretty.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A sharp knock at the door was quickly answered by a rather flustered and relieved Shadai, a look that quickly changed upon seeing the handcuffs around her son’s wrists and the pissed off look on his face.
“You found him! Thank the heavens, but what is with the handcuffs?” she questioned, glancing between the two curiously. She highly doubted they just found him wandering the streets or sitting on the porch of someone’s house.
“We found him at the Durem Gift Extravaganza disabling the alarm system. When we realized he was a minor and had run away from home, we brought him here instead of the station. We’re leaving him in... Your care with a warning to stay out of trouble as no harm had been truly done,” the officer explained, ignoring the dark looks and growled curses that emanated from Cody. As the handcuffs were unlocked, a pale white hand shot through the door opening and gripped Cody’s free wrists. The officer barely noticed her nails slowly lengthening and gaining the appearance of serrated claws instead of fingernails.
“Thank you officer, we’ll make sure he stays out of trouble. Come on Cody,” Ary said as calmly as she could, growling the last bit and giving the spawn the darkest look she could muster. It wasn’t hard to tell the look from her frightened him more than the one his actual mother gave him as the blood suddenly drained from his face. His skin practically glowed in the dark it was so white. Good, he knew who the real one to fear at the moment was.
“Alright... Well, I hope you have a nice night. Good bye,” the officer said, speaking slowly as his eyes roamed over the unusual group. Kids these days were just getting weirder and weirder by the minute.
Once the officer left and the door closed, Ary threw Cody harshly into the couch. The pre-teen fell against it with a soft thud, just barely able to remain sitting. Gah, he was going to have a nice bruise in the shape of Ary’s hand that was for sure. She certainly had the death grip thing down insanely well.
“I hope you’re happy. You are in so much trouble; you will wish you had gone to jail instead. Aenira, Azrael, tell Cody goodnight and go to your rooms,” Arytiss growled, voice colder than ice and her body rigid with fury. If there hadn’t been little kids around, she wasn’t sure she would have spoken so nicely once the door had been shut and the officer gone.
“NO! NO HURT ‘IM! No hurt ‘im, mommy!” Aenira cried, sniffling loudly and looking severely upset by how things were going. Course, with her latched onto the pink-haired spawn it didn’t look like she would be going anywhere anytime soon.
“We’re not going to hurt him, ‘Nira dear. We just need to have a little chat with him,” Ary assured, crouching down to try and pry the little girl off of Cody’s leg. It took several more minutes of talking and struggling to get her to let go and be carried off to her room.
In the silence that followed, Shadai merely gave Cody a saddened and disappointed look. Cody, in turn, just stared at his shoes with most of his face hidden by his hair and feathers. Neither one moved or spoke as the white-haired female put Aenira down for bed. Both knew what was to come, and both knew how unpleasant it would be.
“Azrael, go to bed. Do not think I don’t see you,” Shadai finally spoke, but directed her attention to the partially open closet where twin orange eyes stared out. She watched as the scowling toddler emerged, looking irritable as his hiding spot was revealed. He glanced between the two and the stairs, as if wondering whether or not to disobey the Egyptian and possibly get himself into trouble.
“Azrael, please, just go. This does not concern you.”
“Cody’s my brother and I’m not leavin’,” Azrael replied, crossing his arms across his chest. There was NO WAY he was going to let Cody be yelled at for running out of the house. It was just unfair! Not to mention that Ary was looking pretty scary and he probably needed all the support he could get. Besides, he wasn’t that much younger than him, both in years and growths so he should be able to stay up... right? He froze as blue-green eyes locked with his, their depths blank of emotion except of self loathing.
“Azrael, just go. No use,” Cody said quietly, sounding as if he was on death row. Azrael just watched him for a few more moments before turning and slowly making his way up the stairs. As he walked, Ary passed him by on her way back down.
Both adults waited till they heard the soft click of Azrael’s door shutting before turning their gazes to the spawn on the couch. Cody just sighed as the yelling began, wondering why he had stooped so low as to try and rob another store. It seemed so... unlike him to do such a thing. Well, he had committed a crime so he supposed he ought to receive his punishment, both the yelling and grounding, with some form of his dignity left intact.
~*Operation S.T.E.A.L*~
Silently Taking Everything And Leaving
It was close to 5:30 pm when Cody, who was supposed to be grounded to his room for another few days yet, emerged from his room and silently moved into Azrael’s neighboring one. The orange-haired pumpkin demon sat waiting on his bed with an empty box of cookies on one side and a crude Jack-o-Lantern on the other.
I’ve given you the cookies, I want my wish. And it better work this time,” Cody quietly demanded, not moving from the doorway. His blue-green eyes stared coldly at the little demon as he appraised him. His brother was indeed the little business man, knowing exactly how to get the most out of giving his services. Cody was just glad it was only cookies he wanted and not money or something. He’d be broke within a week if his brother did.
“Mm... Yes, but I cannot say it will. You know how un... Unpre... I can’ control it that well,” Azrael calmly replied, struggling a bit with the wording. A smug smile slowly crept onto his face as his usual notepad and orange pumpkin pen were slowly taken out. Writing on a specific page for a few moments, the paper was torn off and placed inside the squash. They had discussed the terms earlier and written out most of the wish via the little hole in the closet that Cody had created when he violently kicked it. The small hole had been useful while the two were grounded to their rooms for various reasons.
Both watched the pumpkin as it burst into life, light flowing out in graceful ribbons before dimming to something similar to candlelight. Yet both knew there was no such thing inside and seemingly no light source.
Cody watched the pumpkin warily, waiting for it to go out. His “wish” had been simple; for him to sneak and steal so quietly that no one heard him and thus he wouldn’t get caught as easily. If the “wish” had been too large, the light would have gone out or not lit up at all. Both had noticed that if the results might not appear, it would flicker and, well, black or red light meant more of a curse than anything else. Basically, bad luck instead of good luck and many times more likely to occur than not.
By some sort of miracle, the light remained true and stable. A sigh of relief escaped from the older boy before he glanced at the clock. Already it was fifteen minutes later with the light outside almost gone; time to go and gather up some stuff while waiting for 7:30 to roll by. The reasoning behind this was for the darkness to fully settle and everyone to in the shop to head home.
Bidding Azrael goodnight, he slipped back into his room and waited, watching the alarm clock by his bed intensely. Time seemed to speed by, taking only a few seconds to pass through two hours. Footsteps going past his room and down the stairs, then down more stairs again to the basement meant that Ary had finally left his room and the girls were going to watch a movie. A soft knock on his door in the secret code he and Azrael had discussed meant it was safe to leave. The boy had told him about everyone’s plan on watching a movie and had agreed it would be the perfect time to sneak out.
The plan had been for him to quietly open his window, climb out onto the slight piece of roof outside his window and jump, gliding silently to the ground below. From there, he’d half run and half fly back to town while sticking with the shadows and steal from the shop.
Or he could slip and fall ten feet into a snow drift. Just his luck too that the damned wish wouldn’t change whether or not he wouldn’t trip or fall, just that he was quieter and stealthier. Cody sighed and stood, brushing the snow off his clothes and out of his hair, making sure he stayed well out of sight of the windows. Sneaking around the side of the house, the boy was already feeling a surge of adrenaline course through him and making him a little jitterier.
It took him seemingly no time at all to run into town and locate the shop from before. The keypad numbers had been stamped into his memory, as well as the location of the back door. Moving around to the back, he made quick work of the lock and soon found himself inside and pressing the numbers to turn off the alarm. With that out of the way and only the lights at the front on, a wicked grin spread across his face.
“Perfect.”
Of course, even with everything laid out so perfectly, he had forgotten to include the fact that there were policemen on patrol outside the shop. And here he was, having handcuffs slapped onto his wrists. Wait, didn’t his mom say she would kill him if he tried stealing again?
Cody’s eyes widened suddenly as he was thrown into the backseat of the police car. “Son, how old are you?” a deep voice asked and Cody turned, flinching away from the bright light. “I... I... I don’t know! Where am I? How did I get here? What’s going on?!” he gasped, sounding terrified.
The officer just sighed and shook his head. Kid was probably trying to pull some sort of trick on him or something. Well, it would be useless to try and get information out of him now. As they pulled away from the store, Cody panicked even more, huddling into a little ball. What did he do to deserve this?!
Ary's Moving Out and... Who the Hell Is That?
Mother, where are you taking me?” Regina complained, accenting both syllables of the word ‘Mother’. A pale nose turned upward at the sight of the mansion they were arriving at. “I am supposed to live here? Take me back this instant, mother. I wish not to occupy such a lowly-,”
“Shut your damned trap. I just have to grab a few things. Oh, and don’t talk to Cody,” Ary snapped, turning into the long driveway a little more harshly than originally anticipated. As the car came to a stop, a pink-haired teen poked his head out the door, seemingly struggling with something out of view and an ever permanent scowl on his face.
“Ary! Finally. Whatever Azzy says, it isn’t true… Who the hell is that?” he called out, eyeing Regina carefully with a greedy look in his eyes.
“I, peasant, am-,”
“She’s Regina, my newest… brat. From the same idiots as your brother and I wouldn’t suggest pick-pocketing her either,” Ary interrupted as she shoved her way past the teen and squirming child.
“Mm, gotcha. Oh, hey Azzy. Who’s the girl?” Cody asked, glancing around confusedly as the dark scowl slipped from his face.
“Regina. Ary’s newest kid. By the way, my name’s Azrael,” Azrael replied as his brother released his hold on his head. The sudden personality change and amnesia didn’t even seem to phase the pumpkin demon. It wasn’t exactly unusual for such an event to occur, often gaining their concern depending on who it was and what was going on at that time. Of course, with Azrael’s attention on the sudden appearance of a new girl he barely noticed the change. Barely.
Scoffing, Regina slid past the two with her nose high in the air. Who were they to address her? They were not of royal blood! Only those of royalty or high wealth could address her as such. If only she had a kingdom, she would have thrown them in the dungeon to be beheaded for such ignorance. They were such pathetic peasants too with one barely able to remember things and the other being a disgusting shade of purple. He practically looked diseased.
“What a snob,” Azrael grumped, crying out in mild surprise as a box flew through the air without any previous warning. Fortunately, it had been aimed at Cody and caught so it missed the poor boy by several feet. “Take that to my car Cody. NOW,” Ary snapped, glaring at the teen. “And DON’T filch anything out of it either or I’ll do what they do in the marketplaces of old and chop off your hand,” she added as a warning, looking ready to do such a thing as well. Apparently she must have had SOMETHING of insane value within the cardboard casing, since Cody seemed to suddenly be drawn to it. With a huff of irritation and seemingly little effort at all, Cody carried out the box and left Azrael and Regina alone in the living room.
“What the hell is your problem?” Azrael asked, crossing his arms and leaning against the doorframe. Oh yeah, he definitely looked cool and yet that pale nose remained firmly in the air.
“You will address me as Her Royal Highness Queen Regina, peasant,” Regina replied icily, eyes flashing dangerously as she happened to glance at him out of the corner of her eye.
“Or what? You’ll order some nonexistent person to chop my head off or throw me in a dungeon? You’ll slap me? Please, don’t insult me or I may just curse you,” Azrael replied coldly, tail flicking back and forth slowly.
“Hmpf. My snow bees will deliver a painful retribution to your insolence if you continue to mock me in such a way, peasant,” the girl hissed, glaring at Ary as she happened to walk by and dump three more boxes into Cody’s waiting arms. Neither Azrael nor Regina remembered seeing or hearing the teen actually enter the room, but he must have at some point since he was standing not two feet away. It wasn’t like he could just teleport or something, and with his pink hair and pale skin it wasn’t like he actually blended in. “Mother, remove this monstrosity from my sight at once,” Regina commanded, looking even more ticked off as Ary ignored her.
“Monstrosity? HA! You haven’t gotten out a lot, have you?” Cody asked, laughing that creepy dark laugh of his. It seemed to echo from every part of the house and even from outside and yet nowhere at once. It was dark and chilling to the bone and deep within the chilling tones, hints of insanity were laced through the supposedly mirthful sounds, seemingly perfect for a haunted house or creepy carnival. Of course, when paired with his famous conniving smirk he looked like a monster in a human disguise.
Regina stared at him in shock and fear. What WAS he? Nobody could, or at least should, be able to create such a sound or look. It was terrifying and made her want to go crawl under the covers of her bed with all the lights on and never come out again. If there was a contest for the scariest voice and look, he could have beaten out the boogieman.
“Cody! What the hell did I tell you to ******** do? Stand there and scare people? Get your damned a** moving!” Ary snarled, glaring at the teen. Cody returned the glare tenfold, turning and heading out to the car.
“Yeah, he’s MY brother. I couldn’t help but-,”
“Silence, peasant. Or so help me I’ll freeze your silly little tail off,” Regina snapped, screeching as Azrael shoved her to the floor. In a flash, the clouds outside grew dark and a flurry of snow bees stormed for the house. Before they could arrive at their destination, they slammed head-first into an icy barrier. Two pale hands snatched forward amidst the fighting children and grasped a hold of an ear each with the left one holding a pale purple one and the right a pale peach one.
“ENOUGH. Regina, call off your snow bees and Azrael, you better hope I don’t duct tape you to the ceiling. Cody, escort my daughter out to the car while I take your brother to his. Tell Shadai the room key is where I hid it last,” Ary explained to the teen, voice soft and quiet like freshly fallen snow. Deep within the quiet tones lay a hint of danger, a storm lying in wait to be unleashed. “If she gives you trouble, do not hesitate to tell me. As for you, Azrael, one peep and I’ll break something. And it might not just be a bone,” she added, releasing her daughter and dragging Azrael up to his room, ending the discussion and fight in one move.
It took almost an hour for everything to get packed up into the trunk, the house deathly quiet as Ary moved about gathering up random objects and putting them in boxes. Even Cody seemed to be well behaved, noticing how she patrolled around like a human version of death, ready to claim its next victim if it so dared to put a toe out of line. “That should be everything. Cody, your mother should be home within the hour. Should you leave, there will be dire consequences. I’m sure you know where Azrael’s room key is if you really want to let him out. Don’t let me catch you sneaking around my house either or I’ll call the cops. See ya,” Ary said to the teen, not offering him a hug or nothing as a token of goodbye.
And with that, the black sports car rolled back down the driveway and off into the distance, just as silent as the house it left with one room empty of all its contents.
