She was still admiring her new tabard. It was beautiful. The unicorn on it was white, the tabard itself done in white and gold, just for her. It was fancy, and she adored it. She’d done little more than admire since they’d handed it to her.
The noise, loud and jarring, pulled her out of her admiration. It took her a few moments to realize what it might be. “An attack?” She didn’t know why that was where her mind went first. Surely it could have been someone having merriment, or some construction somewhere in the castle. Surely it could have been any number of things that was not the sign of a hostile engagement.
Voices rang in the hall, shouts calling everyone to action. It was an attack. Knights were being called to ready themselves, to get to the walls and the gates and prepare for battle. Leev had one small moment of emotion. Her first battle. This would be her first battle (in memory).
As she rose to get ready, she found herself almost shaking. So many different emotions were vying for her attentions right then. She let out on long, calming breath. She was trained for this. She knew how to handle a sword, she knew how to carry herself. She knew her sword forms, though she had to recollection of where she’d learned them. But she knew them. And knights did flinch away from battle. They rose to the call, they fought to uphold their codes and their oaths. And she would fight to defend the castle.
Nervous, she could say she was that. Maybe a little afraid. But she was very much looking forward to her first battle. It would be an even better test than her quest had been.
Leev finish dressing, armor and all, and reached for her sword. It felt good in her hands. The wear and tear on the grip fit her hands perfectly. It was her sword. “And today we will see just how well we work together.”
There, she was nearly ready. Just one more thing… Leev froze in place. There was something, right there on the fringe of her mind that she was forgetting. Something that was important. Very much so. But what?
Leev shook her head. Whatever it was had fled her mind. She chased the fading thought for a moment, but only found that she had no idea what she could have forgotten.
Forcing a shrug, Leev turned to make certain she had everything she needed right then. It wouldn’t do to dwell on things she could not remember. As a knight her duty would be to the here and now, and not whatever little fleeting thoughts her mind had. Though she couldn’t quite shake the feeling that there had been something quite important that she needed to do… or find… She wasn’t sure.
She clenched her fist. “Don’t worry about it,” she whispered to herself. “There are more pressing matters.” Like making sure she had all of her weapons in order. Making sure her armor was on properly, and making sure she had a snack or two tucked away in her pockets just in case. Snacks and material that could be used to bandage wounds. A skin of water, too. All things she would want later, if things turned bad.
Satisfied that she had all that she needed and could obtain here, Leev left to find something else productive to do. There were fortifications and endless other preparations to make. They had a whole castle to defend. Leev would be doing her best to help with that. They were going to win this battle, or die trying. At least that was her plan.
