Another day, another task handed to her. Leev was glad to have the distraction. It was time out of the castle, time to test her herself against the wilds. Sure, she hadn't done much fighting or too much testing on her previous journey, but she had learned a lot. At least she thought so.

She hoped her horse had learned a few things, too. "No running off this time, right?"

The animal gave no response, and Leev settled herself into the saddle and set out.

[Step 1]

The land around the castle was much as it had been before. Rocky, windy, and neither too interesting nor too dull. Leev found she rather liked it, at least when her map didn't have her trailing too close to a cliff. She had not enjoyed nearly going over the edge last time.

But this time the map her her and her horse on a trek over solid ground, between rocks and shrubs. They were making very good time, if Leev had to guess. Good enough time that when they passed a small stream Leev halted, giving her horse a few moments to rest and drink.

That was when the wolf attacked. At least she assumed it was a wolf. It was large and canine, at the very least. It came at her all snarls and teeth.

Leev had not been ready. Too late did she draw her sword, too late did she swat the beast aside. It drew blood first.

But the beast wasn't stupid. It ran the moment Leev returned the favor.

[Step 2]

After cleaning her bite, Leev carried on.

Sadly the wolf attack seemed to have unsettled her horse greatly. It was skittish, constantly snorting and jumping at every little thing.

Which was why Leev was not overly surprised when it refused to enter the woods. Again.

"Come along," she told it, "the map says this part of the woods won't go on for very long. It is merely crossing our path." A tug at the reins yielded nothing. The horse planted her hooves in the dirt and simply would not budge. Leev sighed, and unstrapped her pack.

"You big stupid beast. Wait for me here."

[Step 3]

The woods were indeed only a small part of her path here. Hardly a sliver of trees worth noting. It was in almost no time that Leev found herself standing at the entrance to something that seemed very familiar. It would seem the dwarves had made several pathways in this area.

Leev shrugged. As long as she proceeded with quiet and calm carefulness, she would be fine.

At least, she thought so. She realized her mistake too late. One small misstep, and she heard the hiss. She didn't know what it meant until the first arrows were too close to dodge. "Gahhh!" Leev stumbled, fell, and blacked out.

It was some time later that she awoke, wounded and sore and tired. It took great effort, but she turned around to head home. A knight would not just lay there and die. A knight would stand. A knight would live to fight another day.

Leev was very pleased to see her horse waiting for her on the other side of the trees. "Thank you," she whispered to the beast. "Back to the castle."

[TRY TWO]

Leev spent as little time recovering as possible. Giving up was not allowed, it was not something she would allow herself to do. It wasn't in the question.

So, as soon as he felt she as physically able, she was strapping her bags to her horse again. "Now, this time you need to behave yourself. I don't even know why I bother bringing you along if you won't even go halfway there with me. One more time of that, and I'll see about getting myself a new horse."

It was likely an empty threat, but her horse hopefully didn't know that.

After triple checking everything, Leev climbed into the saddle. "Let us go."

[Step 1]

Sadly, it seemed her body was not up to the challenge.

At first Leev thought it may have been due to her injuries, but by the time she'd turned around and made it back to the castle...she was certain it was much worse than just injuries. Much, much worse.

[TRY THREE]

Luckily, this was not the first case of this horrible illness the castle physicians had seen. They were prepared.

Which made Leev very happy, because she intended to set out on her quest again as soon as possible.

Which she did.

She didn't bother threatening the horse this time. The pony had behaved herself last time, but they hadn't even made it to the forest before turning back. But Leev was determined. She would make it whether the pony or her body wanted to cooperate.

She didn't even say anything as she kicked her horse into motion.

[Step 1]

Leev grew a little worried not far into their trek. She started feeling a little ill again.

"No, no, no," she said to herself. She refused to be sick. She refused.

So she trudged on.

[Step 1] REROLL

She was wrong. She was so, so wrong.

She grit her teeth and admitted to herself that she was not yet well. She was still sick. There was no way she could continue, so she turned around and went back to the castle.

[TRY FOUR]

Leev wasn't one to give up. After some medicine and rest, she was back out there, tying her pack to her horse and climbing into the saddle.

She was not going to quit. She was going to complete this quest or die trying. An idea, she admitted, that sounded very silly. There were far better things to die for than some silly retrieval quest.

So perhaps she would not take it quite so literally. But she still was not giving up.

[TRY FOUR] [Step 1]

The open air was apparently good for her. She found herself feeling much better, though she was still wary. Every little cough or even the slightest hint of feeling queasy caused her worry.

But the longer she journeyed, the better she felt. "The good old country air," she muttered to herself. She didn't know how much of a role it really played, but she was grateful to feel better.

Which made it all the worse when her horse stumbled, nearly sending them both tumbling down a rise.

[TRY FOUR] [Step 1.5]

She might not have gone tumbling, but some of her food stores did.

"Damn!" Leev cursed and sat there, staring down.

She knew things could have been much, much worse, but it was still worrisome to just lose food like that. What if she needed it later? What if the path ended up longer than she had first realized.

Leev sighed. It would be ok. She would complete this quest no matter what.

[TRY FOUR] [Step 2]

As they came to the forest, her horse did indeed hesitate, but allowed itself to be led inside.

The forest here was rather nice, not oppressive or too dark. At least not at this time of day. Of course, Leev's mood was probably making things seem better than they were.

And her mood only improved as she came across pack stuffed with foodstuffs. "Oh?" Her eyebrows rose and a grin spread on her face. This discovery more than made up for the loss she'd had earlier. The bread was stale, a little, but the food was entirely edible. And there was even some sweets.

Leev did have a quick glance around, seeing if the owner of this foodstuffs might be around. But alas, the food had no home. Or it hadn't, until Leev had found it.

Her mood very bright now, Leev led her horse out of the forest.

[TRY FOUR] [Step 3]

She remembered this place very, very well. She could still see where she'd stepped and set off that damn trap. It was obvious, now. A little bit of different stone work, a little hint if you knew what to watch for.

Her mistake would be her advantage. She would just have to step lightly and slowly.

The horse was an unknown component. Getting IT to step where she needed it to was more work. The going was slow, but they made progress. Leev would never admit it, but she was a little afraid. One wrong move and she'd find herself dealing with arrows again. She really didn't want that.

Which was why when she heard the tell-tale hiss, she cursed. She tried her best to dodge, and very nearly did so.

She was hit, not as badly as before, or perhaps she was. Maybe it was determination that kept her moving. She was not giving up. This damn maze with it's booby traps was not going to get the better of her again. She would continue and she would live

She was mildly amused to find that her horse had escaped that trap completely unscathed. The beast really could surprise her.
