Work. Piles of it.

The man always kept himself so busy with work, it left him with little time for much else. School was online, set at his own pace, so he worked and worked into the wee hours of the night. Leo enjoyed his job as a freelance photographer; it kept him moving, seeing new places. The people he could take or leave, being more interested in his own doin. Magazine ads, weddings, baby showers and more – it all kept him busy.

Sometimes he would daze off in the middle of work to think of certain people, certain places. He fondly remembered the beach and meeting some of the Raevens of Lab 305. That was always a discussion he was ready for.

Focused, Leonard barely heard his cell ring as he worked diligently on his computer. Photos meant editing – lots of it. At least, it did if you wanted happy customers.

No, the phone could wait; he was busy.

This went on for hours. The message blinking the light on his phone didn’t matter… at least until he finished.

It was nearly three in the morning before Leo deemed himself finished with his project. He had forgotten all about his phone until it vibrated with a text. It was short; just from a past client thanking him. He merely offered a quick ‘you’re welcome’ before finally pulling up his voicemail and checking just what was so important. People rarely called nowadays.

On the other end was probably the happiest voice Leo had ever heard. Cringing slightly, he held the phone a little ways from his ear while listening. Mostly small talk, but the man said he was with the Lab in the beginning so Leo grit his teeth and listened.

And then the bomb dropped.

Leo would be getting his own Raeven.

At that point on the photographer had a hard time listening – he had to play the message again just to hear the when and wheres. Normally he wouldn’t be so eager but this was a big thing.

Closing his phone but saving the message, Leo set to work on prepping the apartment for his to-be Frei.

She didn’t like it. She really, really didn’t like it.

The entire car ride was nearly terrifying, Ethiriel clinging lightly to the passenger seat the entire trek. Despite floating about a foot above the seat, she felt every bump and turn via the seatbelt that fastened her safely into the giant, metal contraption. It was uncomfortable and, with her limited sight, very disturbing. If she could help it, the tea Frei would like to never ride in one again.

Unfortunately for her, that was out of the question.

Grateful beyond all belief, Ethiriel let out a contented sigh once the car came to a stop and the hum of the motor ended. There they were; her new home. The driver’s side door opened loudly, followed by it being slammed shut. The sound made the Frei twitch, having not expected it, but she waited patiently for Leo to open her door for her – something he was quick to do. Once open, the photographer offered his hand to her, a gentle tap on her wrist for her to find his hand, and he gently led her out of the vehicle. She offered a small bow and a quiet ”thank you.”

The photographer kept a hand on Ethiriel during the short trip to their apartment, only letting go to dig the keys out of his jean pockets. There was little talk as they walked; Leo not exactly being the best at holding conversation, but the Frei didn’t mind – she was rather quiet in nature, herself.

”Here we are,” Leo said as he opened the door and swung it wide. He gently nudged Ethiriel into the huge, open living room before following suit and closing the door behind him.

Ethiriel floated in place, blindly observing the room around her. Just as in the lab, she couldn’t see a single thing – the room had no defining features, at least in her eyes, and she could only stare blankly. ”It smells… nice,” she stuttered, offering the only sense that she could in this situation. It was a clean scent, as if he had recently tidied up the place. It seemed like he at least put forth an effort for today, and that was nice.

”Thanks,” he replied, carefully taking the Frei’s arm and leading her to the couch. ”You can sit here. I’ll show you your room here in a bit. Is there anything you want?”

”I am… fine. Thank you.”

Ethiriel listened carefully as Leo walked into the kitchen, his shoes making a stark difference in sound between the carpet and tile. She heard him fuss with pots and pans, presumably starting on his dinner, or perhaps theirs. She wasn’t to eat, not human food, but the thought was appreciated in the very least. Pulling her attention away from the sounds of Leo piddling away, the Raeven allowed her hand to drift away and onto the arm of the couch. It was a rough material, pleasing to the touch, and she smiled just a little. She would grow fond of this couch in time. Just like the room, it smelled clean and fresh.

She would like it here.

Leo was beyond relieved, seeing Ethiriel at that table with the unfamiliar Raeven. Immediately he knew she was in good hands, but he rushed toward them regardless.

”Thank God, you’re okay,” he said in the car. It had been days since he had seen her last, his nerves beyond shot. ”I thought you were gone forever.”

”I am just fine, Sir Leonard. Thank you for your concern,” she replied, raising a hand to gingerly adjust her injured shoulder. It was sore, but it would be fine with time. Ethiriel couldn’t thank Rivener enough for his courage… It was a brave thing he had done, and she owed him her life.

”I was restless while you were gone so I ended up getting more silver for you. I’m just so glad you’re okay.”

”Thank you.”

Leo thought back on that day, when Ethiriel was taken. It was strange; the men were so fast and so precise, like they had planned it from the beginning. He hadn’t expected the Frei to be ripped from his arms, his grip on her so light as they held arms. It was a normal walk – it happened so fast. Next thing he knew, she was gone.

His anxiety had peaked that week.

”We’re almost home, don’t worry.”

”That is a relief,” she said.

Much like their first car ride together, despite the photographer’s nerves, the ride was silent. Ethiriel had little to say regardless of the last week’s… ‘activities.’ She just wanted proper rest in a proper bed, as well as some tarnish or rust to regain her strength. The water at the diner had helped, but it wasn’t enough to make up for a week’s worth of starvation.
