Most recent news 6/03/06:Thanks guys.. for your unwaning support. I'm currently undecided on what to do with my shop here.. I don't think I'm going to have the time to be fully functional with it. I want to print my own fanbooks next year and this summer is going to be dedicated to that.. I dont know if I'll have the time/energy to finish up those customs and pets from the event. I'm currently taking offers on an october 2003 letter so I can pay back those who I've owed for several months now. Sorry for the disappointment. crying Life has gotten pretty serious on me (growing up is hard to do) and I don't have very much time/energy to be active on Gaia other than a little posting and a little moderating.

..: About the Shishi :..

Welcome to Shishi Mountain! What is a Shishi you ask? Well, first off, their name is pronounced she-she. Shishi are spirits that live to protect people, places, animals, you name it! The only problem is when the Shishi are first brought into the world (as lucky talismans) they are missing most of their power. A Shishi's will to live is its will to protect its charges, but until they are an adult, they do not have all of their power. This is where we come in! By making a contract with a Shishi, we agree to protect the Shishi spirit until it reaches adulthood. In return, upon reaching adulthood your shishi will be your faithful friend and life-time guardian.

Being the etherial beings they are, they know no language bariers. Also, since Shishi are animal spirits (think lion-dog, see origin below), they tend to get along well with all species, and can be RPed along side anyone or anything (RP is not required though).

How did I come to find Shishi?! Well, I'm glad you asked! Its kind of a crazy story, really. eek Please see post 4, story.

Shishi grow in three basic stages. Talisman, Child and Adult. Talismans will preview the pattern of your Shishi. The one pictured here is a colored sample.

A male will have its mouth open to ward off evil spirits and a female will have its mouth closed to keep in good spirits.

..: Origins :..
These breedable Shishi are based of a real life mythological creature. They are known by a few names such as Shishi, Koma-inu, or Shisaa. Shishi are lion-dog protectors of temples and shrines in east Asia. There are usually placed outside, but there was one period in Japan when people brought them inside their temples. Shishi statues always come in mated pairs. One will have its mouth open to ward off evil spirits (male) and the other will have its mouth closed to keep in good spirits.

How do I get a Shishi?
You can get a Shishi through many routes. Events, flatsales, auctions and pet trades (see below).
I don't have a lot of time.. do I have to RP?
Nope! RP not required, but is encouraged. Regular RP participants may recieve or be eligible for special items, however.
I really want one but I suck at auctions/flatsales/events! Will you give me one anyway?!

How long will it take my Shishi to grow?
Hmm, anywhere from 5 days to 3 weeks (per stage). If something IRL comes up, it may take longer, but I will try to grow them regularly.

It was a bright, sunny day in Barton Town, perfect for a relaxing day of fishing. My affinity for the ocean enticed me for a trip to the waters east of Gambino Isle. Hopefully the weather would be just as nice there! I packed my fishing gear, rented a small boat from old man Logan and set off from the Port of Gambino. Carefully, I set up my fishing rod and bait hoping that today would be a lucky day for me. After setting an anchor, I settled back in the comfy chair of my boat. A cool off-shore breeze was blowing lightly, carrying with it the smells of sea salt. So comfortable was I, soon I found myself snoozing.

There was a tug at my fishing line and I snapped awake as I jerked the pole, hoping I may have caught something. My bait came flying out of the water and over my head with nothing attached. "

False alarm," I guessed.

Suddenly I realized that my boat was surrounded by soupy fog, and Gambino Isle was nowhere to be seen! Somehow my anchor had been detached and I was now floating through the middle of nowhere! I must have really fallen asleep for some time. To my delight, an island started coming into view. I had hoped it was Gambino Isle, but squinting as hard as I could, I noticed a prominent mountain on this island. Definately not Gambino! "Where the heck am I?!" I wondered aloud.

When my boat landed upon the beaches of this strange island, the heavy fog lifted, leaving only a mist. There was a lush forest seemingly covering the whole island. All kinds of green trees cohabitated along side cherry blossoms of pink and white types. Even the large mountain was not immune to the lush trees and other flora covering this island. Since I had no clue how I would get back to Gambino Isle, I decided to take a little hike to explore the island a bit. I pulled my boat clear of the water and tied it very carefully to a thick tree.

As I strolled through the forest, I started getting the feeling like this was no ordinary forest... or island for that matter. Something about it just felt different, but I couldnt put my finger on it. A feeling of serenity, security and safety seemingly eminated from every object here. As I traveled a path up the mountain, I noticed strange talismans hanging from the branches of many trees. Some were glowing distinctly. I cautiously approached one and inspected its details. A remarkable piece of craftmanship, it seemed like nothing else I had seen in all of Gaia.

In an instant, the little talisman burst into a million shards that glittered like the stars. I fell back in my surprise wondering if somehow I had broken something precious. The glitter started resolidifying into some sort of animal- like shape that I couldnt quite identify. A few seconds later a small animal that looked something like a lion stood before me. I had never seen any living animal like this, save for some statues I saw guarding many temples in my travels to the east... could this really be one of those creatures? The ancient lion-dog guardians, the Shishi? Though this one before me was quite small, and not nearly as fierce as the statures.. perhaps it was a pup?

The shishi pup walked toward me and said, "Are you my fated partner? If you look after me until I grow into my most powerful form, I promise you won't regret it."

Just then a person appeared behind the little pup. She was a lady of dark complexion dressed in purple robes. He hair was a deep red and it was tied up into symmetrical buns. With a soft voice, she said to me, "Girl of Gaia, only those of a special heart and mind can ever reach this island. It's been centuries since anyone has been here, and my fellow shishi have been waiting for our messiah... someone who can bond us with persons whom we can protect. We live to protect our partners and/or their lands. Without this, we have no purpose. Will you take on this charge? Bond us with persons that will guard us until we reach our final form, and we will be loyal friends and guardians for life."

I just stared in awe for a few minutes, wondering what I should do... Messiah? What?! I mean was this really believable or just a strange dream? Since I have a belief that all things of mythology and folklore have an origin, and I was staring at something very real in front of me, I decided to take that chance. "Okay," I said, "what will you have me do?"

The lady then transformed into a great and beatiful beast.. a full grown Shishi. She lept toward me and planted a soft kiss on my forhead. From this kiss, a red jewel formed. "With that kiss, our bond is complete. That jewel is proof that you are the Shishi messiah as chosen by me. You may come here anytime. " she spoke. "Now take these talismans back to your land and find worthy partners for my Shishi kin. Return here every once in a while to find more Shishi and leave a report for us."

"Return here?" I asked, puzzled. "I just happened here by accident while fishing. I'm not sure how exacly to get back."

"Return to the beach from which you came, and there you will find a skiff engraved with the heads of the 4 gods. As long as you have your jewel and the skiff, you can always return here," she answered. There will also be skiffs so that those who bond with a Shishi may seek this land for recreation and interaction with other ShiShi. Upon entering here, all powers or magics that any being bonded with a Shishi may have will be null. This is our sancuary. I am the Shishi goddess and the only one that can take on a human appearance. The only ones who may enter the temple higher on the mountain are you, our messiah, and myself." She explained sternly. "In addition, take this book. You can record your Shishi activity logs here, as well as read up on Shishi history. It is your third precious asset. Now go, and may you have good fortune!" With that the great Shishi goddess disappeared with a gust of wind.

Suddenly I started to feel quite warm. Before I had the chance to think of the cause, a great flash of light surrounded me. My rag-tag fishing clothes became beautiful green robes, a laurel wreath formed upon my head, and my angelic staff appeared with a new etherial radiance I had never felt before.

"What on Gaia...?" I asked myself as I looked around at the cherry blossom branches from which talismans hung. Then I remembered the little shishi pup that had "hatched" when I examined a talisman. Quickly I looked around for him. He was resting on a thick branch, and smiling.

"So will you be my partner after all? Will you be helping my friends?" he asked excitedly.

"I believe that is what just happened here," I chuckled. "Come little one. I will take you and your friends to a land of many caring people that you can love and protect, and in return will love and

Schools back in session! I've got a lot of art classes so this shop may not be as active as we have been in the last two months. We are still open, and RP is still encouraged, but certing and growings maye be a little slower than usual. I apologize.

Next Event :: Introducing Shishi Mountain's first RP event!

Shishi Island Excursion RP Event!

Next weekend (exact times TBA) we'll have a 3-day window of the full moon where I can ferry Shishi and their Guardian friends to Shishi Island, where all of the first generation are born! This island is in a secret location, and usually only those with Shishi bonds can enter. However, I have arranged to allow non-guardians to come along, as there are bound to be a few new talismans lurking in the brush that will need loving guardians! Non-owners will need to sign a pact of peace before entering the island. I know you all wouldnt do anything to harm the island or its inhabitants, but Shisaa is less trusting than I.

This is an exploration excursion! I will narrate everyone through the first ferry and through the tour of the island. Shisaa will have a dopple-ganger rowing additional ferry trips to and from the island, and anyone may join our tour at any time, through the ferry. Everyone is strongly encouraged to RP the walk-about! I will be playing out the excursion, but it'd be boring if it was only myself and Cinnamon~!

The exciting part is this: There are many unexplored realms of the island. As we go along, I will be posting landscapes in which you can search. When you see a sparkle light up in a tree, bush or who knows where, click it and you may find a unique item! Maybe a coupon for any item in the item store, a breeding slot, or a a special feral/natural talisman! There are also several small exotic creatures in the jungles, so your Shishi might bond with a familiar~! Monkeys and dragons, oh my! eek

((Exact rules will be posted. Finding items will be similar to seek-and-find flatsales, but there may be multiple people who can find a coupon or familiar, etc. When you click on a sparkle, you will get an image that tells you what you got, and how many slots there are. If you find a coupon for a free cert upgrade, it may say x5 guardians, meaning the first 5 people to post a short sentance or two RP of their discovery will win! ))

Ferry sets off Friday aug 20 @ 7:30pm, will RP until roughly 9:30-10:00 PM.

Here you will be able to purchase upgrades to your Shishi's certificate. You must have a Shishi before purchasing background upgrades (of course XD).

To upgrade your Shishi's cert, send a PM to Shisaa with the title "Cert Upgrade." Write which cert you would like, and send the appropriate amount of gold to Shisaa.

My name is Usaku and I'm the creator/artist/colorist for this shop. I've been on Gaia since Feb. 21st of 2003. I have run 3 minishops since Sept.-Oct. of 2003, and have been active in breedables since around Nov. 2004. I currently work at the following shops:

Critters, Ltd. - Dragon Colorist and Breeder
Sunchildren - Colorist and Breeder
Squeekat ~R - Colorist

I like drawing, coloring, cute things, nachos, 80s music and old school video games. Anime and manga, of course, too. I am currently accepting pet trades. Pet trades will be handled on an equal basis: premade for a premade, custom for a custom (no lineart edits though). Customs include choice of background from available backgrounds (no custom BGs, sorry!)

If the pet you would like to trade is not on the list please PM me with a link to your shop. I will get back to you depending on what kind of spare time I have. In this case, it would qualify as a premade for a premade trade.

If your pets are not on this list, and you would like to do a pet trade, please PM me with a link to your shop. I will let you know if the trade is accepted.
