Reality is perhaps the most candid method of melancholy. The maladies of the world collect and force themselves upon the most blameless and innocent of souls, oftentimes children. Pity is offered upon them, but they do not readily take it. How disgruntling, they are just children...But really, are they all children anymore? No, they have faced enough to understand the cruelness of the world as well as the beauty of it all the same. Anyone is old enough to be the master of their own soul, and everyone has the right to sell it. However, would everyone be so desperate as to sell their soul to a demon?

No...not everyone. Certainly not, why would everyone? Everyone is a massive generalization that is not always applicable.

Some have so little soul left within them that whatever life that remains is the most precious of them all. Once human, these innocent dolls have been reanimated with pretty faces through shards of soul that scribe their past. They would not sell their soul to a demon, for they have so little of it left that no demon would be willing to sample a taste.

Some are not bound by soul nor death. Shinigami, beings born from death lack the life of soul. Instead, they sever the human memory from the soul--and finale! The beauty of death in itself.

Demons that had once been rarities to be spotted in the human world have become larger in number, devouring souls of wretched humans that have nothing else in the world left to live for sans their final aspirations, be it revenge or other personal aims. The demons commonly hide from public, serving their masters as butlers or maids in their households where they are ensured their reward of soul.

However, awareness of these paranormal beings have risen. More and more people are becoming aware, and the factions are getting restless.

The Kuroshitsuji universe is set in 1888 Victorian England whereas YML's plot is one year after the canon's, 1889. YML adheres to the canon with minor edits which will suffice with explanation. The paranormal activities in the canon are kept, supporting the existence of ghosts, shinigami, demons, angels, etc. The innovation of alchemy, however, serves as an important catalyst for the shop. While in the original canon, Dolls required other beings to puppeteer them, in YML, they are more advanced in that they are capable of animating themselves without the assistance of another being (see Dolls in class types for more information). Another drastic difference is that more demons are surfacing to the human world to form pacts, inflating human awareness to demons and paranormal creatures--stirring unrest in the Anglican Church. In turn, Her Majesty's Secret Service struggles to keep humans assured that demons do not exist, since there are demon butlers that indirectly work under the Queen's hand (ex: Sebastian Michaelis). The Shinigami Offices are also disturbed by the unrest, raising their faculty's security into adopting codes, disguises, as well as blaming the entire taboo on demons for being soul-hungry. Amidst the paranoia, the Chessboard Society has taken into its hands investigation by the public, for the public so that nothing is swept under the rug and all abnormalities taken to face value by England's brightest...

In YML, there are three main specimens available for purchase at the moment.
In the future, we may add more as we see fit accordingly to each meta.

Demons are baroque creatures that seem to aspire soul collection as their reason of existence. They possess superhuman abilities as well as the skill to transform into their own unique creature pertaining to their demonic aura. They are known to form Faustian contracts with humans in order to eat their souls when the human's wish has been fulfilled. In YML, this specific class does not begin as Demon Butler but starts with the master (who has not yet formed a pact) as the first stage of evolution. In this sense, the staff also refers to this class as D.Butler, Master/Butler, as well as simply "Demon".


STAGE I > STAGE II
- must have completed setting up journal
- 5 RPs, all are treated as flashbacks (2 solos/3RPs) ; solos should expand on the measure of desperation of the civilian
- additionally, 1 pact RP (where your master/butler meet for the first time and form their pact)
- have staff check RPs and stamp with your pact art! (this is when you get your pact art, good job!)

STAGE II > STAGE III
- wait for your personalized pact art!!

STAGE III > STAGE IV
- participate in 1 meta (and finish)
- 1 growth quest (rising action to prominence)
- hosts at least 1 social gathering/party (this is treated as a mission solo or a mission PRP)
- encounter at least 2 shinigami and 2 dolls (to have enough information to show you know about them)
- 4 faction prompt responses (PM the shop mule when you’re ready)
- exhibit dedication (don’t expect to reach this stage if you’re going to hit/run)

Shinigami, or Grim Reapers, are individuals that reviews the lives of those that are about to die. Shinigami are generally seen in sharp suits, basic at the beginning of their career. They are suited with glasses that allow them to view the cinematic records of a person's life (see the wiki if you are confused) and each are equipped with a unique, inconspicuous Death Scythe that allows them to reap souls. While Shinigami are generally hardworking beings that dutifully fulfill their soul reaping responsibilities, some have quirks of their own and tend to adopt side-missions in the human world (ex: Ronald attending parties, Grell & Madam Red as Jack the Ripper). However, due to more people becoming aware of the Shinigami's existence, the Shinigami Offices started a code in which each Shinigami takes the disguise of a human occupation and identifies each other according to an Arcana codename (ex: Kiel is known to his fellow Shinigami-in-disguise as 'The Fool'). In YML, Shinigami are expected to likewise record brief summaries of their missions in the Shinigami Offices. In return, their records will be used in the main plot! Excellent work, Shinigami! YML refers to these reapers as "Shinigami" popularly because the canon does also (the wiki refers them to that instead of 'Grim Reaper' though both suffice ICly).


STAGE I > STAGE II

- have the admin review your shinigami's growth to make sure it is sensical for him to advance

STAGE II > STAGE III(B)
- participate in 1 meta
- all necessary shinigami logs completed (total of 5)
- if companion with human, must reap the human’s life (PM shinigami offices first for directions)
- if companion with doll, must cease companionship (must break doll in a solo RP or a regular RP)
- ** if partner with another shinigami, must undergo 3 mission RPs from the shinigami offices (both will reach mentor)
- have the admin review your shinigami's growth to make sure it is sensical for him to advance
- CAN TAKE shinigami (basic) as apprentice if not already partnered.
- the apprentice becomes a “sidekick” of a sort
- if you show enough dedication, we just might evolve the apprentice to a shinigami (enlightened*)
- shinigami (enlightened*) is a special stage that is not listed in the evolution, the costume will be custom made as well

Dolls are the only class that stray from the canon's version. While in the canon, Dolls require a puppeteer to animate them, YML's plotline states that Scarlet Plantaget, renowned alchemistress/presumed lunatic developed twelve doll types that are capable of leading their own lives as well as "potential" growth. Like the canon's Dolls, they are still made from combining a human and other materials, including wax, silver, gold, steel, iron and stone, but Scarlet figured a way to animate them and fill them with a mysterious element that substitutes for the "stuffing". Unlike Drocell and his master's Dolls, Scarlet's Dolls also have hidden alchemic powers that are sealed within them so that when the time is right, they may serve to protect the queen and England if the HMSS fails to do so first. Dolls also act as the HMSS's eyes, though they are not aware of this. Through Leland, Scarlet is able to see the progress of all the Dolls and where it is they are at. Before reaching the Oversoul stage where their potential is unlocked, Dolls remain looking childlike and have an eyepatch covering one of their eyes. Upon hitting Oversoul, they grow into a teenager form with braver outfits. Each doll's potential is coordinated with a zodiac sign that seals his/her ability (Ex: Leland's doll type is 'Leo').


STAGE I > STAGE II

Humans make up the mass majority of those in the Kuroshitsuji universe as well as the YML one. While they have heavy limitations (both phsyical and emotional), some have been fortunate (or unfortunate) enough to earn the aid of a paranormal being. Humans can be obtained as a pair-pet with Demons (for example, in flatsales, demon/demon butlers are gained and are pre-paired up with a human). However, humans are the only class that can be quested for, and are the only class that anyone who is not a member with a store-bought character can play in the ORP (see the FAQ section for details).

BASICS
Q: What is Kuroshitsuji?
A: Kuroshitsuji or Black Butler is a manga written by Yana Toboso set in the Victorian era.

Q: If this is a fandom B/C, will I need to read the manga to understand everything?
A: Nope! Everything you need to read about the series is here, and you can click here for the IC megathread that tells you all the basics you need to know. Of course, we expect you to have common sense of the Victorian Era (ie: no TVs or videogames sorry).

Q: How do I obtain a pet?
A: Pets are obtainable through flatsales, auctions, flaffles, and other contests.

Q: What time period is this in?
A: The YML universe is set in 1889, England. Most of the Kuroshitsuji canon is retained, though none of the characters that are deceased in the series are deceased in YML; this roleplay serves as an alternate plotline to the actual series, and your characters will influence its growth and progress.

Q: Will Kuroshitsuji characters make cameos?
A: Definitely! With each sales event, canon characters will be unlocked and can be interacted with in the ORPs and events.

Q: Do I have to have a store-purchased character to RP?
A: In the ORP, you can RP as a quested human (must be stamped first) and interact with store-purchased characters and quested humans alike. You CANNOT make a journal for them in the guild unless they have a store-bought companion. However, if you are lucky the staff might like your character so much that Pistolsys might do art for them and allow you to post a journal for them in the guild.

Q: Do stamped humans count towards my character limit?
A: Yes, stamped humans count towards your character limit. If they are stamped, they are elligible to become a companion to a store-bought character.

Q: Can I quest for two humans?
A: No, you are only allowed to quest for the maximum of one human. Keep in mind that two humans cannot be partners at this time. Pistolsys already has an event in mind in which that will be possible. For now, you may only quest for one.

Q: Can the FS humans(that come with a butler) become companions with shinigami/dolls?
A: Unfortunately, no. Pistolsys designed all the FS humans with a demon butler by their side for the art. In fact, demon butlers CANNOT be obtained except through FSes. However, you may quest for humans in the questing section of the guild who may then be paired up with a shinigami or a doll.

Q: Why should I quest for a human? They're so boring!
A: Humans might be the least exciting race on the surface (but you're a human too, so you know). However, they serve to get a companion much faster (also since, you can't get a butler unless you already have a human).



GETTING STARTED
Q: Will I get a bigger version of the cert's art?
A: Yes. We will PM that to you for your privacy!

Q: Okay, so I won a pet. Now what do I do?
A: This B/C is journal required. You will be required to fill out your journal as your first step upon joining.

Q: What if I can't post often enough?
A: Being in this B/C means you need to have enough time to meet the minimum amount of activity (one solo every three months). If you can't meet that, perhaps it isn't a good idea to join YML. However, it isn't too much to ask, one per three months.

Q: If I just won a second character and they haven't met yet, will they receive separate certs?:
A: Yes, they will receive separate certs. However, they will share a journal and the growth of both will be recorded there. WE DISCOURAGE YOU FROM TRYING TO GAIN A SECOND CHARACTER unless you are planning to pair him/her up with your first one. It only makes sense that they would meet eventually also and pair off if you are planning to evolve your first character (we surely hope you do). If you do not have this plan in mind we will relocate the character to someone else.

Q: Okay, so I have two characters. Do they have to be together in all their RPs?
A: Definitely not. You may RP them separately as you see fit. However, if we see insufficient interaction between the two they will not evolve.





RELATIONSHIPS
Q: Can my master/butler share a romance?
A: Romance between master/butler is strictly prohibited. In Victorian England, that behavior was scorned upon and not tolerated well. Of course, scandals were no invisible happenings but we (the staff) encourage you not to do it for the sake of not doing it. Butlers can be affectionate towards their masters or vice versa in a one-sided manner (as exemplified by Alois Trancy) but please don’t use the L word. It isn’t lesbians. Also, demon butlers are more interested in their masters’ souls to begin with, sans the exception of Hannah.

Q: Can my character share a gay/lesbian relationship with another?
A: Homosexual relationships were highly looked down upon in Victorian England. People were more conservative in this time era, and often discovery of such behavior resulted in exile or even death. Unless your character is the god of hiding gay, please refrain your character from flaunting his sexuality unless he/she is very careful about it. Your characters are allowed to have a homosexual orientation, but we’d prefer you to think very realistically. (Basically, we’d rather you not, because whoever it is that you’re being gay with is probably going to get you in trouble for it; that was the ‘real world’ Victorian England). Do not misunderstand, Pistolsys and the staff are adamant in supporting prop 8 but we’re RPing a serious RP that adheres to the time period with tenacity.

Q: BUT GRELL WAS PRETTY GAY LOL!!!
A: Yes, well, Grell is pretty special, and he will definitely make a cameo. Ergo, this RP already has a Grell and our Sebastian would commit demon suicide otherwise, so please do not attempt to become the second Grell. Here at YML, the staff generously embraces variety, diversity, and creativity.

Q: If you're tenaciously sticking to the timeline, how come the Burschton brothers sport sunglasses? This is Victorian England!
A: As a matter of fact tinted glasses were available by the 18th century. However, the Burschton brothers' eyeglasses are not called "sunglasses" ICly. They are special, moderated Shinigami spectacles that allow them to view specific major events of a person's life in the cinematic records because their work demands efficiency and lucid transition. Not only do they have to act as the Shinigami postal service but Grim Reapers as well.

Q: What about romance in general? And breeding?
A: Romance is lovely, so long that it is kept at PG-13 and is sensical to the progression of your character’s plot. However, please re-read the relationship section of the FAQs to make sure you are not violating anything. Breeding is discouraged unless it is plot crucial, and truthfully, we imagine it to be quite difficult if you have a two-character limit. According to the canon so far, only humans are capable of reproduction (rather, they are the only class in which we know how it works).





SALES
Q: How often will sales be held?
A: Pistolsys plans to hold sales every one to two months or so, but if schoolwork becomes heavy, things might change!

Q: Will YML open customs?
A: Yes! Customs happen once every blue moon, so keep your eyes open!

Q: Do you take RL commissions?
A: Absolutely not. YML exists purely for imagination and pressure release, no real money should be involved!
